House fire in Chatham; Man charged with kidnapping, assault in Dennis; Sandwich crash

Fire destroys house in Chatham

CHATHAM - Firefighters from Harwich and Orleans assisted Chatham crews at the scene of a house fire early Wednesday morning. Several neighbors reported heavy smoke in the Outermost Harbor area about 5 AM. Firefighters found the house at 123 Sea Gull Road fully involved. There were no reports of injuries and firefighters had the blaze under control in less than an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear suspicious. Damage is estimated to be over $100,000. Posted on 11/29 at 5:30 AM; updated on 11/29 at 4:30 AM. 

Man charged with kidnapping, assault in Dennis case
DENNIS - As a result of an overnight investigation Dennis Police obtained an arrest warrant for 35 year old Shane Orton of Dennisport, charging him with Kidnapping, Unarmed Robbery, Assault and Battery and Intimidation of a Witness.

The incident allegedly began late Monday evening when Mr. Orton had a  planned meeting with the 33 year old Yarmouthport victim in a Yarmouth restaurant. Police said Mr. Orton had a past dating relationship with the victim and after spending time at the restaurant with her he offered to drive her home.

The victim accepted the ride and after leaving the restaurant entered Mr. Orton's van. Shortly thereafter Mr. Orton refused to bring her to her residence or allow her to exit the vehicle.

Mr. Orton then drove the victim back to his room at the Jonathan Edwards Motel and during the ride he grabbed her cell phone, so that she could not call the police. Upon arriving at the room he reportedly began to physically assault the victim.

After leaving his room with the victim Mr. Orton proceeded to drive her to various locations on the Cape for several hours during which he continued to assault her. The victim was able to escape from Mr. Orton's vehicle early on Tuesday morning at around 2 AM, while on Dogwood Ln. in Harwich and run to a nearby residence on the street seeking assistance from the homeowner who called the Harwich Police.

The victim was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Harwich Ambulance and treated and released for injuries to her head, neck and body. 

Mr. Orton was located later on Tuesday morning by Barnstable Police on Route 28 in Hyannis and was placed under arrest on these charges. He was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon in Orleans District Court and is being held in the Barnstable County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail for his next court appearance. Posted on 11/28 at 6:00 PM.

Two injured, one seriously in Sandwich crash
SANDWICH - Two people were injured, one seriously in a crash in Sandwich Tuesday morning. The crash happened about 10 AM at the intersection of Route 130 and Route 6. According to police A pickup truck driven by 45-year old Owen Giardini collided with another pickup driven by 65-year old Adolf Fandrich of Bridgewater. 25-year old Scott Mattson of Brockton was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. The state is making plans to change the design of the intersection where numerous crashes have occurred. Posted on 11/28 at 6:00 PM.
