Training exercise prepares emergency responders at mall

Emergency responders conducted a training exercise at the Cape Cod Mall              Ryan Somerfield.
HYANNIS - In the wake of 9/11 shopping malls are considered a high profile target because of high concentrations of people in a small area. Sometimes the threat can come from within as in the recent deadly rampage at a Salt Lake City mall. Sunday evening after the Cape Cod Mall closed to the public, emergency officials including Barnstable Police, Hyannis Fire and mall security amongst others converged to conduct a training exercise. Understandably specifics were not released for security reasons but the scenario reportedly involved hostages being held. Passing motorists probably noticed a police command vehicle and several cruisers and other emergency vehicles in the mall parking lot. Expansion of the mall over the years has made it necessary for responders to continue to be familiar with the layout of the mall and what resources are available inside. BARNSTABLE - A prisoner who tried to escape from Barnstable District Court this morning was shot by police.

According to late reports 22-year old Anthony Roberts of Centerville (seen below in a BPD mugshot) was due to be arraigned on receiving stolen property charges after a hit  and run crash yesterday and police were trying to link him to a series of break-ins in the Barnstable area.

He was being led into the courthouse about 8:30 AM when he allegedly slipped one hand out of handcuffs, assualted a court officer and then fled across Route 6A to the Barnstable General Store where he reportedly car-jacked a dark green Honda. (click on photo to see NECN video). The car driver/owner was not injured just shaken up.

At police request a Cape Cod Times delivery van tried to block the exit but Roberts backed into it and tried to flee out another exit despite repeated pleas by police for him to stop.

About 15 Barnstable police officers and court officers were running after the car.  The officers were yelling, "'Get out of the car' with their guns drawn."  Roberts was bloody and had already been shot said Megan Burke an employee at the general store.

Police had reportedly fired a single shot hitting Roberts in the chest. A shattered windshield laid testament to the gun shot. The car continued to roll a short distance before striking a curb.

Roberts was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital and then to Barnstable Municipal Airport where he was Medflighted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston where he was reported in critical condition.

At a late afternoon news conference at the Barnstable Police Station police called the shooting justified saying the suspect was driving a stolen car and was recklessly endangering the public.

In a bizarre twist D.A. O'Keefe witnessed the events unfold in front of him. To avoid any appearance of impropriety he's asked Plymouth County D.A. Timothy Cruz to lead the investigation.
