Alcohol factor in crash that causes NStar truck to roll over in Hyannis
Three vehicles including an NStar truck collided on Route 28 in Hyannis late Friday night.
HYANNIS - Despite the scene in these pictures no one was seriously injured in this crash in Hyannis. Police say the Chevy pickup (above right) driven by Manoel Ramos rear ended the Ford Contour (above right) driven by Arthur Lomba about 10:30 PM on Route 28 by Hiramar Road. The impact caused the Contour to collide with an NStar truck driven by Sean Knight which rolled on its side (right). Ramos reportedly failed a sobriety test at the scene and was arrested by Barnstable Police for operating under the influence of alcohol. Traffic on Route 28 between the Airport Rotary and Bearses Way was detoured for two hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was cleared. Story and photos by Frank Paparo.
Crash slows holiday commute to Cape
Incredibly the driver of this Honda was not injured after getting rear ended by a truck.
DENNIS - A crash on Route 6 near the start of the "alley" section east of exit 9 on the Dennis/Harwich town line caused delays for motorists headed down Cape for the holiday weekend. A Honda Accord stopped in traffic on Route 6 before the on ramp from 134, was struck from behind by a Cape Cod Express Delivery truck. The driver of the Honda reported that she saw the truck bearing down from behind just before she was hit. The impact pushed her car from the left lane into another car and then onto the ramp itself. The second car sustained minor damage. Reports from the scene indicated that the Cape Cod Express truck sustained damage to its drive train. None of the drivers were injured. Dangerous intersection scene of another crash
A car and truck collided at Route 28 & Lumber Mill Road, the scene of numerous crashes.
CENTERVILLE - A pickup truck and a car collided this afternoon at the problematic intersection of Lumbert Mill Road & Route 28 Centerville where the state has been promising and studying to put a light for five years and has reportedly put it on the list for a light in 2008. This crash occurred at 4 p.m., tying up traffic in both directions on Route 28 for 45 minutes. No injuries were reported but the small vehicle had to be moved by flatbed. Two Barnstable police cruisers responded and the northbound lane was closed until the cars were removed.

Fire quickly doused in Centerville
Firefighters were called to 1199 Osterville/West Barnstable Road for smoke coming from the house.
CENTERVILLE - Centerville, Osterville, Marstons Mills (COMM) Fire received a 911 call of a fire in an unoccupied house at 1199 Osterville/West Barnstable Road in Centerville around noon Friday. The occupants returned to find smoke coming from their home.
Firefighters put out a fire in the dryer that had slightly extended beyond the appliance, causing smoke to build up in the house. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes and crews ventilated the home while the family waited outside. Police had to block a lane of the road because of fire apparatus.

Man severs fingers in Sandwich
SANDWICH - Rescuers were called to an East Sandwich home Friday afternoon after a man apparently nearly cut off his fingers with a power saw. Medflight was requested but not available so the victim was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Further details were not immediately available.
Car vs. Car at the Bass River Bridge
Two cars collided on the Bass River Bridge Friday morning.
WEST DENNIS - Dennis Fire received a call shortly before 11 a.m. Friday reporting a motor vehicle crash on rain-slick Route 28 at the foot of the Bass River Bridge on the Dennis side.
A Toyota Camry headed westbound was struck by an eastbound Ford Escort that apparently swerved and lost control as the driver attempted to avoid a car turning in front of her. The Escort then crashed into the Camry and spun around 180 degrees. The driver of the Escort and a passenger in the Toyota were taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police catch B&E suspects red-handed
DENNIS - Dennis Police caught two alleged break-in suspects red-handed this morning and are checking to see if they may be involved in other breaks in the area.
While on routine patrol around 5 a.m., Officer Cleve Daniels saw a man climbing out of a window of the Breakfast Room Restaurant at 675 Route 28 in West Dennis, according to police. The man fled on foot on foot into a wooded area west of the restaurant where he was taken into custody, police said.
The man was identified as 19-year Jose Ortiz of Harwich. Ortiz was charged with breaking and entering into a building in the nighttime and possession of burglary tools and taken to Orleans District Court for arraignment. A second suspect, 18-year old James Hamilton, also of Harwich, was arrested on the same charges and also taken by police to Orleans District Court for arraignment.
Fire interrupts dinner at Ptown restaurant; Fire at Dunks in Centerville; Truro fire; Truck crash spills chemicals
Dinner interrupted by fire at Ptown restaurant
Employees and patrons of Devon's Restaurant wait outside while officials make sure a stove fire is out.
PROVINCETOWN - Dinner was interrupted at a Provincetown restaurant after a fire broke out in the kitchen.
Employees at Devon's Restaurant at 401 1/2 Commercial Street had the apparent grease fire knocked down with an extinguisher when firefighters arrived about 6:45 PM.
Patrons were evacuated while smoke was cleared. The restaurant closed down for the night to make repairs but plans to reopen Friday.

Fire at Dunkin' Donuts in Centerville
Firefighters and police responded to the Dunkin' Donuts in Centerville after a small fire broke out.
CENTERVILLE - At 5 pm the Centerville, Osterville, Marstons Mills (COMM) fire got a call that there was a fire in the cooking area of the Dunkin' Donuts in the Centerville Plaza at 1680 Route 28. The staff and patrons and the stores on both sides were evacuated as the area had filled with light smoke. The area was blocked off and the COMM ladder and its members went to work putting out the fire in the cooking and preparation area. COMM fire then vented the store. Fire damages Truro duplex
A crew headed by F/F David Gonsalves sprays foam to douse hot spots at a fire in Truro Thursday.
TRURO - A fire caused extensive damage to one end of a large duplex in Truro late Thursday morning. A "working fire" assignment brought mutual aid from Provincetown and Wellfleet to 124 Shore Road (Route 6A) around 11 a.m. An engine from Eastham covered the Truro station. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but was probably a carelessly discarded cigarette according to Truro Fire Chief E. Thomas "Punchy" Prada. Several fire trucks lined Shore Road and hoses running from a hydrant forced the closure of the road for about an hour. Photos by Tim Caldwell.
Harwich teen killed in CT ATV crash
HARWICH - An ATV crash killed a 16-year old from Harwich. The Times reports Justin Ramshur was killed when the ATV he was operating struck several trees in Woodstock, CT. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Ptown jewelry store robbed
PROVINCETOWN - A pair of thieves made off with about $10,000 of jewelry from a Provincetown store Sunday. A man distracted the owner of Remembrances of Things Past at 376 Commercial Street while a female reportedly removed a tray of high end antique rings from an unlocked case. Provincetown Police issued a description of the two, a male about 6 foot 3 wearing a white t-shirt and a female accomplice about 5 foot 2 with a visor cap folded back. Investigators dusted the store for fingerprints. Store owner Nini Lyons has operated the store since 1969 and says this is the first trouble she has ever had. Truck crash spills chemicals
A line painting truck crashed into a ditch spilling chemicals in Yarmouth.
YARMOUTH - Just after 6 this morning, a line painting support truck, loaded with various paints, went off the road on Buck Island Road in West Yarmouth.
Police and fire department personal called for state environment officials to evaluate the situation so cleanup could start.
The driver was not injured, but a passenger was taken to CCH with non-life threatening injuries. Yarmouth police are reportedly investigating if the driver may have fallen asleep.

Fire damages Hyannis porch
HYANNIS - A fire damaged a porch on a building at 56 Barnstable Road about 3:50 a.m., according to the Hyannis Fire District. The building houses the Cape & Islands Gay & Straight Youth Alliance (CIGSYA). Hyannis firefighters quickly doused the flames. A carelessly disposed cigarette is the suspected cause of the blaze.

Man seriously injured in fall at Chatham airport
A man was Medflighted after falling at the Chatham Airport.
CHATHAM - A 68-year-old man working at the Chatham Airport suffered a serious head injury when he fell from a front-end loader 12 feet to the ground, according to local fire officials.
The victim was transported by Medflight to a Boston area hospital about 4 p.m. today.
Further details were not immediately available.

Two injured in Eastham crash
EASTHAM - Two people were injured in yet another crash on the notorious stretch of Route 6 west of the Brackett Road interchange in North Eastham, accordiong to Eastham police.
Those injured were taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital after the accident, which occurred around 10 p.m. near the Sheraton Four Points Hotel. The crash remains under investigation by police.
Four injured in crash behind Cape Cod Mall
Four people were injured in a crash behind the Cape Cod Mall Wednesday afternoon.
HYANNIS - Four people were injured in a crash between two vehicles and taken to Cape Cod Hospital by Hyannis, Centerville & Barnstable ambulances, according to rescue personnel.
The crash occurred at the rear entrance to the Cape Cod Mall and the entrance to the driveway of the Cape Cod 5 Cents Savings Bank on Route 28 in Hyannis about 3:45 p.m.
Following the side impact crash, a passenger in a white Chevy Cavalier vehicle had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.
Traffic was tied up for more than an hour.

Man injured on P'town breakwater
PROVINCETOWN - Rescuers had to carry out an injured person who apparently broke his ankle while walking on the popular West End breakwater to Long Point.
The man was most of the way over to the point so EMTs were transported by National Park Rangers from Herring Cove Beach to the scene. They had to carry the victim some distance to the Ranger vehicle which then brought them back to Herring Cove. (photo by Tim Caldwell)
Woman saved from drowning over weekend
TRURO - Cape Wide News has learned a woman was saved from drowning over the weekend at Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro. The 68-year old woman apparently suffered an acute asthma attack while swimming. Lifeguards rescued the woman and provided care until paramedics arrive and she was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital.
Police investigate break-in and vandalism on school grounds
Someone broke into the press box at Hyannis East Elementary School and stole a safe.
HYANNIS - Yesterday on the first day of school Barnstable school officials discovered a break in the 2 & 1/2 story high wooden press box in the Little League field in the rear of Hyannis East Elementary School on Bearse's Way and a safe from inside missing around 11:30 a.m.
Barnstable Police called a County Investigation Officer (CIO) to photo the scene and investigate. When the officer first got there he also noticed that the sprinkler system hose had been cut and water was flowing all over. (Story and photos by Frank Paparo)
Electrical fire at Brewster school
Electrical fire at Latham School in Brewster
Firefighters were called to the Latham School in Brewster for a small electrical fire.
BREWSTER - Firefighters were called to the Latham School on Main Street (Route 6A) Monday after an electrical fire started. The problem was reportedly in a kitchen outlet.
Matters were briefly complicated when officials tried to cut the power only to have the emergency generator come on.
No one was injured and the exact cause is under investigation.

Paddelboat capsizes in Dennis; Mashpee head-on crash; Centerville break; Hyannis fires, Harwich crash
Dennisport tourists vs. paddle boat in Swan River
Rescuers assist a man after a paddle boat capsized in Swan River in Dennisport.
DENNISPORT - Three tourists got more than they bargained for on Monday afternoon when their paddle boat capsized in Swan River just north of the Route 134 bridge. Dennis firefighters rushed to the scene in the ambulance and dive truck and fished them out of the water. The up-ended paddle boat, carried by the incoming tide, continued its journey toward Swan Pond.
Uninjured, the three intrepid mariners were transported in the ambulance (right) back to the rental shop from whence their voyage began.

Driver extricated after head-on crash
Two pickup trucks collided head-on on Quinaquisset Avenue in Mashpee late Monday morning.
MASHPEE - One person had to be extricated after a head-on crash in Mashpee late Monday morning. Two pickup trucks reportedly collided head-on on Quinaquisset Avenue. After being freed the victim, 44-year old Peter DeSouza of Mashppe, was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other truck Peter J. Matheson of Mashpee was taken to Falmouth Hospital. Mashpee Police are investigating. A Cape Wide News reader caught the scene on a cell phone camera.
Hurricane evacuation markers installed along Route 6
CAPE COD - You may have seen them in Florida or other hurricane prone areas but now tourists on Cape Cod will have no problem finding their way off Cape if a tropical cyclone threatens the peninsula. Governor Patrick recently announced plans to strengthen the state's emergency plan. Apparently as part of that initiative these blue signs were recently erected at all exits along the Mid-Cape Highway making sure people know the way to the bridges in the event of an emergency.

Store broken into in Centerville mall
Police were called to the Bell Tower Mall for a break in over the weekend.
CENTERVILLE - Barnstable Police got a call Monday morning of a B&E at Gateway Homes that has a suite of offices in the 2nd floor of the Bell Tower mall 1600 rt 28 in Centerville. When officer Mark Delaney arrived he found that thousands of dollars of electronic equipment had been stolen over the weekend. It appeared the thieves climbed up a dumpster (right) to the 2nd floor rear where a window was ajar. A County Investigation Officer was called to take photos and dust for prints.

Basement fire quelled in Hyannis
HYANNIS - Hyannis Fire responded to a basement fire at 30 Willow ave Hyannis at 12:45 PM Monday The building was evacuated until firefighters put out the fire in the basement. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. The building houses a Kitchen & Bath design business on the first floor and a private residence on the second.
Hyannis fire was called out again to 324 Megan Road about 3:30 PM and quickly extinguished a small outside fire before it did any damage to the home there.

Air bags credited with preventing injury in Harwich crash
Air bag deployment likely prevented serious injury in this crash in Harwich.
HARWICH - Side airbag deployment saved the passenger in this Honda Civic from injury after a two car crash at Freeman Street and Hoyt Road about 12:30 PM Monday.
The Honda Civic stopped on the lawn of 51 Freeman St. No injuries reported.
Harwich Police are investigating.

Car vs Motorcycle on Cotuit Road in Mashpee
MASHPEE - One person was Medflighted to Massachusetts General Hospital after a vehicle vs motorcycle crash in Mashpee late Sunday evening. The crash happened on Cotuit Road about 10:30 PM. The victim 28-year old William R. Stewart of Mashpee was reportedly thrown about 50 feet by the impact. The car driver 22-year old John K. Keleher of Falmouth was not injured. The crash is under investigation by Mashpee Police.
Dryer fire at Hyannis hotel
HYANNIS - A smoky fire broke out in the laundry room of the Cape Cod Inn on Main Street in Hyannis about 9 PM Sunday evening. Firefighters were able to remove the burning clothes and ventilate the smoke. No one was injured.
Attempted murder suspect arrested
BOURNE - A man wanted for a stabbing at the TGI Friday's at the Cape Cod Mall was arrested Saturday in Bourne. 19-year old Julian Green was nabbed by Sgt. Sean Balcom and Detective Brian Guiney at the McDonalds by the Sagamore fly over. He'll be arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Monday. Sgt. Sean Sweeney told CWN the break in the case came from surveillance on a Range Rover left at the stabbing scene and on an associate of Green's Jermain Taylor of Marstons Mills whome they had been watching for 6 months on suspicion of drug trafficking. On Friday police followed Taylor and 20-year old Rachel Dean to the Mall where she reportedly drove the Range Rover away. Police stopped both vehicles a short time later. Dean was charged with trafficking in cocaine and conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws. Taylor was charged with the same drug charges and operating after revocation. Police reportedly recovered cocaine and $17,000 in cash. Those arrests led police to Green in Bourne. The stabbing victim is in stable condition at CCH.
Drugs, gun found as police execute search warrant
HYANNIS - Barnstable and Yarmouth Police executed a search warrant Friday night at a West Main Street home in Hyannis after a three month investigation into alleged drug activity. Barnstable Sgt. Sean Balcom, Detective Brian Guiney along with Yarmouth Detectives Charles Peterson and Russell Giammarco reportedly recovered 16 grams of cocaine, a loaded 9 mm handgun and $10,000 in cash accordcing to Sgt. Sean Sweeney. Police obtained an arrest warrant for the resident 24-year old Albert Guess and arrested him later Friday night. He reportedly had additional cocaine on his person. Guess is to be arraigned Monday in Barnstable District Court on charges of trafficking in cocaine and possession of a firearm without a permit.
Falmouth drowning, Target Ship Scuba diver dies; West Barnstable crash leaves man critical
Man drowns in Falmouth
FALMOUTH - Jose Colon, 33, of Springfield drowned while trying to make it back to shore at Grews Pond in Goodwill Park, said Captain James Marshall of the Falmouth Fire Department. A Falmouth Department of Natural Resources worker was able to pull the man from the Colon water around 6:30 PM Saturday but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Scuba diver dies in Bay incident
Earlier in the day, a scuba diver exploring a shipwreck in Cape Cod Bay went into cardiac arrest shortly after surfacing in Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis said Captain Robert Brown of the Dennis Fire Department.
West Barnstable crash leaves man critical
WEST BARNSTABLE - A single vehicle crash in West Barnstable left a man critically injured. The crash happened just before 9 PM on Crocker Road when the vehicle struck a tree. The victim was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital after a Medflight was grounded by fog. The crash is under investigation by Barnstable Police.

Cell phone blamed for Harwich crash
Police say a driver talking on his cell phone caused this crash in Harwich.
HARWICH - Talking on the cell phone and not paying attention allegedly caused this three car crash on Route 137 at Cemetery Road about 6:45 PM.
At top right Harwich Fire Lt. Timothy Jacques takes down information from the driver identified as 18-year old Ryan Taylor of Holliston, MA who was driving the Toyota 4runner and is accused of causing the crash.
One person was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries.

One injured in Hyannis crash
A sedan rear ended a pickup truck on Route 28 by the airport in Hyannis.
HYANNIS - At 1 PM this afternoon Barnstable Police and Hyannis Rescue responded to Route 28 between Airport Rotary and the Auto Zone Plaza across from Kent's Carpet Land for a 2 car rear end crash in which a Toyota Corolla headed toward the Airport Rotary hit the rear of a Ford pickup truck.
Traffic was tied up for 45 minutes while the the scene was cleared and Hyannis Rescue transported 1 person from the scene to CCH.

This t-bone motor vehicle accident occurred at Bearse's Way & Enterprise Road around 10: AM today.
The Hyannis Fire Department and Barnstable Police Department responded. Traffic was tied up for around 45 minutes.

Bicyclist hit in Harwich
Police speak to a driver who was shaken up after striking a bicyclist in Harwich.
HARWICH - A female teenage driver reportedly struck a young woman on a bicycle at Route 39 at the rotary about 2:30 PM.
Above Officer Rob Horgan speaks to driver who sits in the roadway visibly shaken.
The bicyclist identified as 20-year old Natalia Sheshukova (right), a Bulgarian seasonal worker on the Cape was able to walk to the ambulance to be treated for minor cuts and abrasions.
Harwich Police are investigating and charges may be pending.

More Route 6 crashes in North Eastham
EASTHAM - More crashes to report on Route 6 in North Eastham. Four vehicles collided in front of the Seamen's Savings Bank about 4 PM in the same stretch of highway south of the Brackett Road lights that have seen at least three other crashes in the past week. No one was seriously injured. Eastham Police are investigating. About a half hour later a vehicle blew a tire when it struck a curb on Route 6 and shortly after that a motorcycle and car collided at Route 6 and Wampum Lane. The cycle driver was treated and then taken to CCH by friends.
Fiery truck crash in Bourne
A truck crashed into a ditch and caught fire injuring the driver.
BOURNE - One person was taken to Falmouth Hospital after a fiery crash in Bourne. About 2:30 PM a truck crashed into the woods on Route 28 opposite Portside Liquors. Photos from the scene appear to show the truck skidded into a ditch into some trees. A tire was ripped from the truck and a lawn mower appeared to have flown out of the bed. A small fire started in the truck but State Police were able to quickly knock it down. The driver was taken to Falmouth with what were believed to be serious but non-life threatening injuries. The crash is under investigation.

Cash register recovered after morning break-in
A gift shop was broken into in Harwichport. Police recovered a cash register later in the day.
HARWICH - A stolen cash register was recovered by Harwich Police this afternoon off Oak Street in Harwich. The register was reportedly taken in an early morning break-in at the Sativa Gift Shop (top left) on Route 28 in Harwichport.
An undetermined amount of money was missing when recovered.

Stabbing in Hyannis; man shot in face with BB gun; Driver Charged in Death of Pedestrian in Dennis Yesterday
Teen stabbed at mall restaurant
HYANNIS - A 19-year old man was reportedly stabbed at TGI Friday's Restaurant at the Cape Cod Mall shortly before midnight Wednesday. Barnstable Police Sgt Sean Sweeney tells CWN two brothers 17 and 19 were at the restaurant when a suspect identified as 19-year old Julian Green allegedly attacked the 17-year old reportedly over a comment about a woman. The 19-year old tried to intervene and was reportedly stabbed in the side twice. The victim then apparently raised his hand to defend against an alleged attempt to slash his throat and suffered a deep gash on the hand. He was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital with what were reported to be serious but non-life threatening. A knife believed to be the one used was found a short distance away in the parking lot by Barnstable Patrolman Peter Nyrbeck. Police located and arrested Green on August 25th in Bourne. Man shot in face with BB gun
HYANNIS - Barnstable Police are seeking the person who shot a 20-year old Marstons Mills man in the face with a BB type gun. Sgt. Sean Sweeney tells CWN some kind if disagreement broke out on Jennifer Lane about 12:40 AM. What reportedly started as a fistfight quickly escalated when one person pulled an expandable baton and the the suspect identified as 18-year old David Hennings allegedly fired a CO2 BB style gun. The victim was treated for a cheek wound at Cape Cod Hospital. Police arrested Hennings at his Hyannis home about 2 PM Thursday. He was charged with assault & battety and possession of dangerous weapons, brass knuckles and some knives.
Man injured in tractor rollover
BOURNE - A man escaped serious injury when the Bobcat style tractor he was operating rolled over an embankment in Buzzards Bay about 1 PM. Roland DuPont was apparently landscaping a scenic area along the Cape Cod Canal off Perry Road when he apparently backed up too close to the edge and toppled over about 25 feet. He was treated and released at Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
Three arrested in Hyannis drug raid
HYANNIS - Three people were arrested after police executed a search warrant at 44 Hiramar Road in Hyannis Tuesday evening following a two month investigation. The Times reports 20-year old Loretta Rix and 27-year old Gerald Lopes both of West Yarmouth. They were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of Percocet with intent to distribute and conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws. A man who happened by the residence at the time was arrested for possession of marijuana. All three were arraigned Wednesday in Barnstable District Court.
Todd E. Jenkins charged with motor vehicle homicide
DENNIS - Dennis Police today charged 42 year old Todd E. Jenkins of Dennisport with one count of Motor Vehicle Homicide by Negligent Operation in the death of Albert Alissi, 77 years old, of Weatogue, CT, on Tuesday morning, August 21, 2007 at about 6:45 AM. After striking Mr. Alissi the motor vehicle continued eastbound traveling off the roadway and striking both a hydrant and utility pole on the north side of Lower County Road. An additional charge of Failure to Operate within Marked Lanes was also filed against Mr. Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins will be summoned to appear in Orleans District Court at a future date. Motor Vehicle Homicide by Negligent Operation is punishable by imprisonment in a jail or house of correction for up to two and one-half years and/or a fine not more than three thousand dollars. CWN followup: Jamaican workers breathing a sigh of relief
CAPE COD - Updating a story we first brought you last Saturday, Jamaican seasonal workers on Cape Cod are breathing a sigh of relief. Hurricane Dean passed just south of their island home. The capital Kingston did log 100 MPH winds and there was significant damage on the island but all of the workers CWN has spoken to say their families are safe.
