Barnstable police say Jimmy Smith is major Cape drug dealer; they execute search warrant, and impound drugs, cash, guns and cars

HYANNIS - Barnstable police on Tuesday made one of the largest drug and cash seizures in the history of the department.

Barnstable police identified Jimmy Smith of Cape Cod and Dorchester as a major drug supplier on Cape Cod.
The seizure is linked to Monday's arrest of Jimmy Smith, 28, of Cape Cod and Dorchester, who Barnstable police identified as a major drug supplier on Cape Cod. Police said Smith sold drugs to other dealers on the Cape.
Executing a search warrant Tuesday at 5 Shagbark Road in Sandwich, police said they found $264,710 in cash; heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine and Ecstasy with an estimated street value of more than $400,000; instruments such as a scale used in measuring and preparation of drugs for sale; and two 12-gauge shotguns, a 9-millimeter machine pistol, and a .45 caliber pistol.
As part of the case, police also impounded a 2006 Mercedes Benz CLS 500, which sold for up to $75,000 when new, and a Cadillac, both shown at the police station (below.) Smith was riding in the Mercedes Benz when stopped and arrested by police on Tuesday evening.
Barnstable police said the seizure followed a yearlong investigation into heroin and cocaine distribution.
Det. Lieut. Sean Balcom said the focus of the investigation, Jimmy Smith (above, in his booking photo), who grew up in Hyannis and served time for manslaughter, has been a major player in drug trafficking on the Cape for the past decade.
Police said the investigation involved a series of undercover purchases of heroin and cocaine from Smith and other members of his organization.
Last Thursday, members of the Barnstable Police Narcotics Unit arrested four individuals for trafficking cocaine and conspiracy to violate the Controlled Substance Act. They were John Viust, 17, of Hyannis; Tyrone Gomes, 23, of Wareham; Matthew Amick, 17, of Hyannis; and Sadie Souther, 19, of Yarmouth.
The four individuals were arrested, police said, after detectives observed them meeting with Smith and buying two ounces of cocaine. Following the arrest, detectives seized $10,000 in cash.
Police said Smith ran from the vehicle after assaulting a police officer. He was arrested for conspiracy, trafficking heroin and trafficking cocaine after police found about 40 grams of heroin and 17 grams of cocaine in his car.
On Monday, police said, detectives learned Smith would be delivering a lot of drugs to a Hyannis address. At about 10:30 p.m., two Barnstable detectives stopped Smith in his Mercedes as he pulled into the address.
Police said Smith ran from the vehicle after assaulting a police officer. He was arrested for conspiracy, trafficking heroin and trafficking cocaine after police found about 40 grams of heroin and 17 grams of cocaine in his car.
Smith's passenger, Clifford Reed, 35, of Hyannis was charged with conspiracy, trafficking cocaine and trafficking heroin. Police also executed an arrest warrant on Reed charging assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, distribution of a Class B substance and carrying a dangerous weapon.
The following day, Lieutenant Balcom obtained a search warrant for Jimmy Smith's residence on Shagbark Road. Smith lives there with Anita Dixon, 25, and Domanic Torres, 22. The warrant was for evidence related to heroin and cocaine trafficking.
At about 2 p.m., members of the Barnstable Police Narcotics Unit, the state police Drug Task Force, the Sandwich Police Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office executed the search warrant.
Inside the residence, police said, they recovered about 900 grams of cocaine, 300 grams of heroin, 26 Ecstasy tablets, $264,710 in cash, and the four guns.
Dixon and Torres had been over at Barnstable District Court, where they learned Smith would be held on $100,000 cash bail. Lieutenant Balcom said they then went back to the Shagbark Road house, apparently with the intent of picking up money to pay for the bail. They were arrested when they arrived at the residence.
"I want to say what a great job Lieutenant Balcom did. He's awesome."
- Chief Paul MacDonald
For about 10 years, Lieutenant Balcom said, Smith has been a wholesale dealer in illegal drugs, selling to other dealers. Police placed the wholesale value of the drugs, which were of high strength, at about $50,000.
Though police long knew that Smith was a major dealer, Lieutenant Balcom said, his reputation intimidated potential informants.
"This is a dangerous guy," the detective said in an interview Wednesday at the Barnstable police station. Pointing to the seized weapons on an evidence table, he said they would tend to dissuade potential informants for working for the police.
Lieutenant Balcom said Smith also made a point of moving around between multiple addresses and having an unpredictable schedule, even with his customers.
Charges have yet to be lodged against Smith for the drugs, weapons and cash found through the search warrant.
The U.S. Attorney's Office and the Cape & Islands District Attorney's Office will decide how to proceed in court against Smith.
Barnstable Police Chief Paul MacDonald praised Lieutenant Balcom, who heads the Barnstable Police Narcotics Unit, for the work he did on the case."I want to say what a great job Lieutenant Balcom did," Chief MacDonald said Wednesday. "He's awesome."
Police also impounded a 2006 Mercedes Benz CLS 500, which sold for up to $75,000 when new, and a Cadillac.

VOTE McCain/Palin 2008
If you can find a copy of the book... if they haven't burned every single one. Who are the true kingpin dealers on the island? Does anyone want to say? Speak up...we can't hear you. Take out the middle man, or the one who is selling on somebody's turf....sure, why not. They knew about this guy for TEN YEARS??? What about the informant from Eastham? What is he up to these days?
Arrest the Black drug dealer, arrest the black trash man...what the hell is the difference.
Great, they busted this guy, but they should be busting them ALL, not just those of selection....money and cars should be put back into state revenue, not handed over to the Cape police. What kind of sh(t is that?
What about the dope? Will it be properly disposed of? Incinerators? Are you sure?
And John McCain should be in the cell with that guy after what he did to the POW's in Vietnam!
Shame on anyone who votes for him!
Big difference! The drug dealer got caught with the goods hands down. No question.
The black trash man got caught having consensual sex with a white woman prior to her murder. And no one other than you has shown that all the evidence was not tested. Nor all the leads followed up.
For that I give you credit. But please don't confuse the two based on race.
What is fair for one is fair for ALL. One drug dealer is no different than the other. Just like my friend the criminal lawyer of Boston said. His words will forever burn in my ears as I continue to read these stories of "selective criminals". ...."they put innocents away so they can protect their local friends and families". Tell me about it!
Whomever they choose to arrest is who is the criminal...Let's call it "Criminal of the Day"..as they have "Lawyer of the Day"...just hang a poster and try to fool the people who are paying taxes to these frauds in LE and the judicial system. Where is the big drug lord? Anywhere to be found? You think this guy is it? Come on.
Damn it, she's on to us.... everybody....move, move, move. Pull the plug. It's over.
person of color-
means they've turned a blind eye to the other?-
brown, black, or white-
it serves them right-
it just happened to be the wrong color?-
to question a person of color-
now means you're a racist and bigot, no other?-
how pc we've become-
to accuse no-one-
unless the they are not of a color-
OB for Premier-
who none shall smear-
or face the wrath-
and walk the path-
of persecution and banishment for years-
that they've arrested the lad
those cops are almighty
they never arrest whitey
that can't be his crack
he was at home in the rack
bet you can't make that cash
just pick'n up trash
Using your "logic" that LE has a thing for arresting black dudes, why didn't they arrest him years ago? As it said in the article, they had been watching him and he was smart. They got the break they needed when they arrested the other dudes.
If you know of any "white" people that are dealing, give me the details, I'll take the info to the police myself. The important thing is this dangerous guy is off the street. The crap that he's been pushing is also off the street. Good job cops, keep it up. Get them all off the street, lock them up and throw away the key. No matter what color they are.
I ubiq now forfeit-
I Admire his copy-
His words aren't so sloppy-
buzz clearly's the one-
and he knows it!-
there are some students from hyannis-
who are here with my son as they hiatus-they told me the tale-
as the teachers avail-
to tell them to vote for the OB!-
What say you oh venerable buzz-?
i can't vote for that one
the vote is so near
its the economy i fear
i listened all summer
but now there's a plumber
he's a regular joe
hoping to keep his earned dough
sarah's so cute
and biden's a hoot
but the country's at stake
so it's McCain that i'll take
How could you be living on the Cape all these years and still be so clueless? How is it that I was there for only a mere fraction of the time and surpassed your great knowledge and wisdom ole' buzzard on thy self appointed throne? More of your condescending sarcasim is what I detest about you. Who killed Christa Worthington? There you will find the biggest drug dealer who had her wacked, in my opinion. Ever watch prince of a city? How about the enforcer? No one wants to get stick to the ceiling buddy boy. Who has the power to remove evidence? 1980, 3 dealers were found dead. You tell me genius. Go to the cops? What are you smokin'?
I'm kind of glad you "detest" me. It reinforces my sanity. I do have a tendency to be sarcastic when dealing with your bizarre claims and unfounded accusations.
Yeah, I've lived on the Cape long enough to know it's no different than anywhere else. Sure, it has it's problems. But at the end of the day it's a great place to live.
I'm just perplexed as to why someone like you who has adjusted to a new life, new job and wonderful friends in Somerville, has to come back and continue to bash the Cape over the head. If your life is as good as you say, then just leave us alone. We're not stupid. If the Cape was as bad as you attempt to make it out to be, I'd have packed my bags years ago. I lived in the suburb's of Boston. I've lived in Southern MA. I'll take the Cape any day.
I've got friends and family all over the Cape. Some are newcomers and many grew up here. They've never experienced the Cape as you have.
In my opinion, your jealous. So take care of the problems that plague your new community and God knows, there's plenty of them. We're fine here without you.
Really? What would you charge them with? Making a phone call? Bring that before a judge, see how far it gets.
