Weekend Cape Area Gas Prices
For the first time since we re-booted this column, there is cause for optimism with gas pricing
But at $4.65 on Martha's Vineyard may encouage you to bring your bike along
That bullet to the head Osama bin Laden took courtesy of the Navy SEALs has had a beneficial effect on the price of crude oil. This is at a time when prices usually start to spike. It happened just as prices approached record highs. We just missed our high (locally, $4.09 a gallon in 2008), although summer isn't here yet.
You can still get a very good Worry on if you look at the big picture. Gas prices spike in the summer. A good hurricane will cancel out any Bin Laden death-related price cuts. Big Oil still rolls over our Congress. The Middle East is still a cauldron of sometimes open warfare. The term "peak oil" still scares me.
A side note... the kids from Bourne High School are doing a car wash at the fire station on Main Street in Buzzards Bay, so go on in and get sudsy.
Here's the numbas:
Current crude price, per barrel... $99.50, down about $13 from the last time I looked at them a few weeks ago.
Massachusetts Average.... $3.999.. Osama could still be alive for the change our gas prices show.
National Average... $3.949.. still about the same as when OBL was watching porn in Abottabad, Pakistan.
Highest Price in Massachusetts.... $4.71, Mobil on Nantucket, Sparks Avenue
Nantucket sports the three worst prices in Massachusetts, A station in Lexington breaks the chain, and then the next 5 spots on the list are in Martha's Vineyard. Allston interferes, and then we go on-Cape to Barnstable.
I've been writing this column since like, uhm, a long time ago, and I've never seen Cape Cod dominate the highest-price rankings like we are this week. At our worst, we get half. Generally, we get one or three on the list.
Lowest in Massachusetts.... $3.69, Prestige Gas, Cape Highway, Taunton
Anywho... all I can do for you is to tell you where to get your gas for a few shekels less. We go town-by-town, and go off-Cape a short distance. We try to keep it to "prices posted in the last 12 hours, but we stretch to a day if we feel like it.
It's all in how you use it, you see. If you drive from Orleans to Chatham or vice versa because gas is one penny cheaper there, you're probably taking things a little too far, to the point of counterproductivity.
However, if you live in Barnstable and your business takes you to Taunton.... you should make an effort to be arriving at Prestige Gas on the Cape Highway with the very last drop of petrol in your engine. You might save 5 bucks a tank, and that adds up after a while.
Hey... if you live in Mashpee but go get your gas in Falmouth, you most likely can bang down a Coke with what you saved. Or pocket the money... $2 X 52 weeks = you just filled your pickup tree for free, once. Thanks to Cheap Gas. You're welcome.
Let's get this chicken plucked, shall we?

Best Local Gas Prices
You'd think that Friday would be the day to do the Cheap Gas column, but No.
Gas stations jack their prices up on Friday just before the evening/weekend commutes, especially around here. I also use several gas-price websites to make up this column, and they tend to be 12-24 hours behind.
We'll try to get a weekend edition up, but doing it today means that the prices might hold for a few days.
Here's the prices, by town, of the cheapest gallon of regular gasoline in each town. For you Mothertruckers out there, all also throw in the cheapest gallon of diesel. Study this list, determine which station you should patronize, and save a few shekels.
Don't thank me... I'm glad to help. Let's just hope that gas prices drop now that we stomped on that Mountain Roach. I would hate to say that killing Osama Bin Laden may only knock a nickel off the gas prices, while a tropical storm this summer may drive it up a dime.

Osama Bin Laden Killed
As you may likely know by now, Osama Bin Laden was killed in a firefight with US troops this weekend. Here are some fun facts to ponder regarding this.
- If they ever make a Where's Osama children's book, you can beat your 5 year old by starting off looking in Abottabad, Pakistan.
- I don't want to wake up the rest of the house, so I can't turn on the TV and hear if you pronounce the town like "I bought a bad," as in doing a fake Saudi accent and saying "Boy, I bought a bad place to hide out."
- When the world's most powerful military is after you, you want to take refuge in the largest walled compound in a town with "bad" in her name.
- I'm not sure who fired the killshot yet. Prior to OBL's waxing, the most famous killer of a notorious fugitive in America was Boston Corbett. BC killed Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth in a burning Virginia tobacco warehouse. Corbett was somewhat of a celebrity afterwrds. Corbett later went mad, pulled a gun on the Kansas legislature, escaped from an asylum, and may have died in a great fire in 1894. His madness was attributed to lead poisoning.
- I'm not sure if a US soldier is eligible to collect the reward on OBL's head. As of yesterday, the reward was $25 million. It may be sort of like how you can't be the 103rd caller to the radio contest at a station you work for.
- If a soldier does get the money, he should split it among his platoon mates, IMHO.
- I'm being told that the soldier who shot OSB did a double-tap. Navy SEALs, btw.
- If this were Death Wish III, Al Qaeda would become disheartened and break up following Osama's waxing. However, that may only work if Charles Bronson shot OBL from 5 feet away with an anti-tank weapon.
- If this were Apocalypse Now, the guy who shot him would walk out among his followers carrying OBL's severed head and then become the leader of Al Qaeda.
- There's an opening in the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Other remaining members of the list are a few cartel hitmen, a pair of bank robbers, a child murderer, a Ponzi scheme guy, a prison escapee, and Boston gangster Whitey Bulger.
- It was a very high profile weekend for the armed forces, celebrity-wise. Moammar Quadaffi's son was killed earlier in the weekend, and OBL's son also died the firefight that killed Osama.
- It is now officially impossible to get a Royal Flush using those playing card decks that the Army handed out back in the day. The best hand you can craft now is a straight flush to the Queen.
- Some air has been let out of my conspiracy theory balloon. I had always pictured OBL being captured like on November 1st in an election year.
- It would have been funnier if a building fell on Osama, IMHO.
- President Barack Obama was aware of the pending attack on Abottabad while he was busting jokes at the Correspondents dinner the other night. He literally made a fool of Donald Trump for a day, and then the issue immediately became back-burner a day after. If Donald hired some SNL alum to write comeback jokes, he may as well send them home now.
- I actually know a Bin Laden personally. One of the programs I worked for was in a high-end Charlestown condo complex, and we had access to the gym there. One of the residents was a Bin Laden cousin. She was a nice enough girl, very pretty, a Harvard student, and very tolerant of the gang-o-thugs I used to bring with me to work out. After 9/11, she was one of those Saudis that got sent home. The FBI literally tore her apartment apart afterwards.
- I'd avoid any large public gatherings for a few days, as Al Qaeda is already promising reprisals.
- If Obama can fix the economy now and maybe find some mustard gas in Basra, he'll have officially cleaned up George Bush's worst leftovers.
- Operating along the logic of difficulties in the Middle East causing gas prices to spike, OBL's murder should knock, say, a buck off a gallon. I'm not saying that this WILL happen, just merely that it SHOULD.
- Even a simpleton should be able to draw up a fine conspiracy theory regarding OBL's burial at sea. "It's all a scam," or "They took him prisoner, and he's ratting out everyone."
- The guy who ratted out Metacom during King Phillip's War at least was given the severed hand of the monarch to prove that he was in on it. He used to carry it around, pickled in rum, and display it for free drinks at area taverns.
News of Osama's death is heard at a Phillies game.
- See the President's speech in the article below.
4/16 Gas Prices On Cape Cod
Many people come to me and ask, "Why do you publish Cheap Gas on Saturday, instead of Friday?" OK, no one actually asks me that, but here's why I do it.
I use several gas price sites to develop this column's entries. These sites use listings like "prices taken in the last 12 hours" and stuff like that. I know that gas stations raise the prices before the evening commute on Fridays, as most people are filling their tanks then.
So, if I do the column now, I get gas prices that have been posted online in the last 12 hours. I feel good walking into battle with that. If I have my ship together, I'll try to get a Diesel one up Sunday evening, for the truckers.

Yikes!
We're polishing off the last of the oil, and things are just starting to get loopy
Everything you need to know about oil, gas, and retailing as we know it today
Depression, famine, war, extinction... it's a long and ugly road, thinking about what happens when the oil starts running out. Look how crazy things get when it merely becomes difficult to get the still plentiful oil.
A staggering video about suburbia, gas and YOU.
Now look at giant China and India industrializing... yup, someday there is going to be a big, bad fight for what oil remains. If you have to cook up a WWIII scenario, you can do no better than China vs. everyone else over the last of the oil.
I would just build nuclear plants everywhere, and limit oil use to American cars. Run our industry and heat our homes with nuclear power. While everyone else is fighting for oil, we'll be humming along radioactively. While they're fighting for oil, we'll be quietly stealing other people's uranium.
We'd need to conquer Canada, so that we get their oil and uranium. We'd have to on whatever other oil is close to us, and take it before the Chinese can do anything about it. That saves suburbia, and lets us keep our cars.
At that point, we have a head start on the oil burners. Wind, solar, hydro and tidal electircity can be things that we use to conserve our remaining uranium and oil supplies. We grow plenty of food between us and South America (who we'd have to conquer to gain their oil and winter harvest season). We'd be self-sufficient.
Look at Plymouth which just can't seem to find anyone who wants to store their spent nuclear fuel rods.
Sure, one needs only look at Japan to see the downside of my plan. Or they can look at Plymouth, who just can't seem to find anyone who wants to store their spent nuclear fuel rods. I'd use the moon, personally. Come to think of it, I wonder if the moon has any oil? I'm sure BP has someone looking into that. Either way, my plan has plenty of flaws.
But is the occasional Chernobyl worth offsetting a World War? Tens of thousands of Japanese will most likely die in some relation to the Fukusomething disaster. 25 years before that, the Soviets wiped out a county or so. I'm sure we've killed more Iraqis than that in the last decade without even trying that hard.... imagine us lobbing nukes at a rampaging People's Liberation Army?
That's actually not the worst-case scenario, nor is one of Americans starving and dying in some Malthusian nightmare of a failed nation... where life is "nasty, brutish and short." At worst, we cease to exist in the modern manner.
There's nothing I can do about that, but here are today's gas prices on Cape Cod that were reported in the last 24 hours..
