It's the Economy, Stupid Part Deux

I'm not how the McCain campaign thinks that people have now forgotten about the economic mess, but I sure know why. After his disastrous handling of the bailout and related issues pushed the election strongly in Obama's favor, the latest desperation pass is to try and change the conversation. The problem is, both campaigns can pretty much square off on the guilt by association or more mudslinging. People have pretty much factored all that in, let it blow by and what do you have left? It's the economy, stupid!

Well, the  "bailout" didn't stop Wall Street from tanking further today. The downward spiral continues unless there is a way to handle the crisis on existing mortgages that real folks have, and the country as a whole regains economic confidence. And lordy, I'm no economist, but I have a pair of eyes and have a healthy skepticism about any relief plan that is suppose to trickle down. I've seen enough of those.

Want to get the full debunk of the McCain mythology? This will do it- http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/23316912/makebelieve_maverick/print

Tomorrow night's debate is being moderated by Tom Brokaw, the questions coming from citizens. I wonder what's on people's minds.....?

Now mind you, there is still a month to go and in politics anything can happen and you always work like you are dead even the night before the election.  And Dems can be pretty good at shooting themselves in the foot (or elsewhere) also. I went to my local Dem town committee recently and there was a speaker from the Progressive Democrats of America, a group which apparently evolved out of the highly successful Kucinich campaign </sarcasm>. This person referred to Obama as perhaps too centrist.

What's amusing is for all the talk about who can work in a more bipartisan way, McCain's record is as conservative as Obama's is liberal, and for both of them, that's a lot. But you know though, sometimes it ain't what you say, it's how you say it. Sometimes there really is cooperation across party lines, Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch seem to be able to do this on a number of issues, most recently on the Serve America Act.

Just don't forget how really good the Right is at "swift-boating."
With little miss Palin doing it, it almost seems harmless...NOT. She's a viper hiding under her Strawberry Shortcake veneer. (that characterization comes form Warren Ballentine, a talk-show host. He calls the Republican ticket Strawberry Shortcake and Mr. Magoo!)
But, they can really do some damage when they want to. Viscious, unconscionable, no rules apply.
Where's the democratic counter to that?
There MUST be something out there, because Pat Buchanan says John McCain will make Dick Cheney look like Ghandi.
What does he mean by that, and why does he say it?

Bit... read that article I linked to from Rolling Stone and you'll have your answer. In addition, the Obama campaign put out a website today - KeatingEconomics.com .

Dem...are you suggesting "two wrongs make a right"? Ayers and Keating.

Where is Mitt when we need him?

You are assuming that the relationships are equal?

Regardless of that, the point is there is plenty of the same "guilt by some level of association" game to be played against McCain and Palin.

You're not kidding!!! this guy makes Clinton look like Father Knows Best!
What bugs me the most are his delaying actions regarding MIA's in Vietnam, and his back-pedaling on torture.
Of ALL people, one who had been through it should die by it to the end. Not "sell your soul to the devil" as the Rhode Island senator said...
Wow! Quite an article. Very informative and well researched.
I geuss McCain is right after all. It's hard to do the Lord's work in the city of Satan!
Phew...him as President?? I don't think so.

Mav, probably just the first 2 of many, I would guess. There is an irony in asking for the same terms given to the Wall Street suits. Now the easy headline is why are we asking for a loan, but read the following - http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/06/facing-shortfall-massachusetts-asks-about-a-federal-loan/ and one gets a sense as to why, with the credit crisis, the question came up.

I get a sour stomach watching all of this. John McCain and Sara Palin are so arrogant, smug and bullies. They are actually projecting thier own threatened
personalities onto Obama, He remained poised,in control, strong and open. Whether you are right or left, we don't need any more bullies, singing "Thats my Story and I'm stickin to it." We need
thoughtful, strong, well informed 21st Century leaders who can help us walk through this dark moment and harness the
bright and brilliant talent of our young
citizens to restore our place in the world. Talking tough and winking are not equal to our great country, Yes Country First, a country of sophiticated, dedicated, informed leaders
not talking down to people as though they were only Joe Six Pack, come on.
We deserve so much more. It makes not
difference where you come from, as Obama
demonstrates, but it does matter that you master the English language and have
the saavy to maintain a high stature in
your speech and presentation, not some
wierd country western imitation. We deserve so much more for our children, everywhere
