The Post-Election Rant

Now the hard part begins, huh?

Whether you supported Obama or not, I hope everyone appreciates the history of what happened Tuesday night. The same people that celebrated in the streets MUST be engaged in the process, whether it is in their towns, state or wherever. Certainly the world looks at us differently now.

With today's economic summit, the Obama transition is looking more like it will be a shadow government, hitting the ground running on 1/20/09. Given the crises to deal with, that is a good thing. If you haven't seen, there is a transition website change.gov, up and running.

Before any Democrat gets too cocky, please remember that it was in this very decade that the GOP machine looked like it had rendered the Dems out of the picture. These things run in cycles, folks.

OK, except in Massachusetts where the GOP lost even more ground. Howell and Beatty didn't even win their own town.

McCain's concession was gracious and one hopes that perhaps since his presidential aspirations are gone, he will go back to being John McCain again.

And just for entertainment purposes, I hope Sarah Palin stays Sarah Palin. Not even the end of the week and the number of stories that have popped to the surface are hysterical. Mind you, as Campbell Brown on CNN so accurately refrained to the GOP people trashing her... YOU picked her! YOU told us she was capable of being a heartbeat away!

While Kerry did not do as well on the Cape as he did in the rest of the state, he did virtually the same as he did down here when running for president. In 2004, he got 55.8% on the Cape, this year, 55.3%. Obama did slightly better than Kerry did in 2004, getting 57.4% of the vote. McCain did about the same worse, compared to Bush '04, as Obama did better. Of the 24 towns on the Cape and Islands, Obama outperformed Kerry '04 in 19 of them.

LOTS of ticket splitters in Sandwich, as Jeff Perry rang up 8504 votes there, compared to 5928 for McCain (and 6111 for Obama).

I stood at the polls most of the day, holding signs, kibbitzing, enjoying the unseasonably warm air we had. My favorite and proudest moment was when my youngest daughter came by, when her mom stopped in to vote. My daughter had a handmade sign she had created asking people to vote Yes on Question 3. She ended up spending a couple hours out there, holding her sign and one of the more printed signs. She even took an Obama sign for a bit. She was pretty happy when her side of the issue prevailed. Her dad, the grizzled veteran of these things warned her, "Enjoy this, it doesn't always turn out that way for you."

No matter what side you are on, staying engaged is what should be expected of us as citizens.

I thought we were supposed to get "change." So why did we return everyone to office? What are you going to say about our Democrat Gov. when he opts to change a law to appoint a replacement for John Kerry if he becomes Secretary of State. We should all give our new president the same respect that Dems give George Bush.

Before you get all wrapped up in any former Clinton folks being involved in the government, try and recall the state of the economy when Clinton left, with a surplus.

The change, for those of you that still don't get it, is from what Bush has done to this country. Instead of whining, trying and fix all the ways your party has screwed things up. Novel idea, huh?

How wealthy have certain investors become and what offshore accounts are they hiding their money? My guess is many have fleeced and outright robbed because they got the news early. The fall of the US economy and destabilization of middle class was a diliberate and malicious attack on America. Possee,

The short lived "rally around Bush" was due to the lies and unanswered questions swirling around, still unanswered, investigators who slowly realized it was not an act of isolated terrorism by one group of Bush haters, but far more complicated series of fiscal mishaps which led to lucrative war for manufacturers. We found out Saddam was on the Bush hit list for CIA daddy along with same henchmen in adm.rummy, ashcrank, and others. Who's war have we really been fighting? Who had the most to gain? Hard one to swallow, but after this last heinous act of embezzlement on our 401k's, what else is there to say? Do we blame innocent Americans for leaving their money on wallstreet? That must be their fault, too. My money is in Fidelity. Guess they will drive them out soon as well, they just keep stealing our money till nothing is left. When do the massive bank robberies begin? Obama has to hire a group of mercenaries and put them behind bars. But I'm afraid soon he will realize he's surrounded by another den of theives.

Is that what really happened? Homes and businesses lost by the struggling middle class were taken be the rich? Is history repeating itself once again? Maybe the midwest farmers have the right idea--buy your land/home outright, live off the land and distance yourself from government and urban tax traps. Is that the better way of life? Ask any Anthropologist who travels to distant lands and they will tell you the real story about Bush and his rogues. I assisted a faculty member once who studied the devastation of Sierra Leone in the late 90's. She asked me to download all I could on what was going on there. At the time, I didn't realize the magnitude of slaughter on young children forced to work in the diamond mines. When I asked her why this story was not on the front page of the US papers she went into a rage and screamed, "because the US govt. doesn't give a SH!T". I was appauled and believed what she said. There is no oil in Africa. But they do have diamonds, don't they. She's from the UK, btw. Interesting how college kids get the uncensored news in class and the rest of us are dumb down day after day. One does not have to be arrogant to show strength. Some great leaders use wisdom as strength and that counts more than one who is hell bent on waging useless wars on innocent people.

It's time we took our country back. And I wish more of you would understand the bigger picture at hand. Obama's strength is having Biden by his side. Biden's been around for a long time and knows what the deal is in Washington. Instead of criticizing, you should give him a chance. If Sarah Palin had been a qualified Republican VP candidate, I respect her, regardless of her make up, 60's beehive & short skirts. Win based on looks? All she had to do was open her mouth & it was all over. Many of us could see the "white trash hussy" in the 250k wardrobe paid for by McCains dipsh!ts. Even Reps. spoke out against her,& realized there were far better qualified, experienced & bright women McCain could have picked. In my opinion, she hurt McCain & the party. I see her as a narcissistic, corrupt, opportunist who's only mission was to lavish her husband with more power, & expensive gifts. Anyone looking at that couple sees it for what it is. He's always walking behind her, not beside her, you notice that? Who wears the pants? Her daughter is 17, getting married, having a baby. What is she trying to promote--women should remain in the kitchen, pregnant & barefoot? Sure the bible belters love her, but that way of life is not for all of us. Some teens & pro-lifers don't want more out of life, they settle too soon because many men would rather have a mommy for life.

Meant..."I'd have more respect regardless of her make up..." Palin is not intelligent, educated, or experienced enough to hold the very important position of VP of the US.

Come one, Mav, let's be real here. If Johnny Depp was running for VP as a Dem, I would not vote for him either! He's not qualified for the job, bottom line. But he's a major heart throb, to many women who like a quick fantasy, so what the hell is the difference? At least Johnny doesn't have turkey neck.

Mav, I'll always love you regardless of politics or how you dump on my lovable friend Neddy....but please take another look at the aging brunette barbie doll, will ya? She's not helping your party, but making a mockery of it instead. No one should kid themselves that any President or party will stop the economic horror of 2009 and following. It's just that Barack Obama and his cadre are our last, best chance. What Greenspan did not get and admitted he didn't is that the crisis and crash is due entirely and simply to our long time economic success, and it is coming with the inevitability of a hurricane. It wasn't about Freddie, Fannie, or credit derivatives. These were symptoms. It was about long term risk not being properly accounted for in prices and loan standards, just like long term effects of climate change aren't properly reflected in taxes, property prices, and insurance premiums. It is and was a Taleb-style "Black Swan". Read Nouriel Roubini at RGEMonitor. The new commander-in-chief needs to be careful, considerate, and deliberate, as every indication is he will be. And I think all constituencies will be properly disappointed, and will need a lot of patience. He'll be tough, smart, and clever. But there are no miracles. Russia will test and al-Qaida will try to attack. And he'll show his mettle.

This partisan ranting isn't the answer to anything; there's plenty of bipartisan blame to go around.

I remember when Clinton proposed and passed banking "reform". That action dismantled one of the most important safeguards enacted in the aftermath of the Great Depression by allowing banks to once again combine with insurance companies and brokerage houses (and took away most regulatory oversight by state banking commissions).

Likewise, Bush has presided over the largest explosion of Federal growth and influence ever. So much for small government Republicanism.

All the while, both parties argued over social agendas.

We need to get serious and somehow adress a problem festering under 5 Presidents and 3 changes in Congressional leadership. As far back as Paul Volcker, there have been periodic clandestine meetings with "power brokers" (like Walter Wriston) to address the near collapse of the financial system. Sound familiar?

We've all got some major problems to address and bickering and delaying will only make the solutions harder to come by.

Obama is NOT the problem!
It's the people who want to destroy him before he even begins.
I'm sure it won't affect him, as far removed as he is, but these people can keep the divisiveness and hate going down here in the real world.
And I would like to see more Republicans like Colin Powell, who will call these people on their un-American attitudes and behavior.

There was (and continues to be) negativism on both sides. I can't tell you how many Democratic commercials in different races (up to and icluding Obama's priceless rearview mirror ad) featured Bush's face superimposed next to a candidate's. Boy, Bush must have had a lot of close friends who always agreed with him (if you believe the voice overs).

And Rush and his ilk continue to snipe in the other direction.

The point is, I need to see evidence that we are working together, not just sanctimonious words. That would include bi-partisan appointments and a real plan (change, in and of itself, is not a plan; the Depression was a change from our previous circumstances).

So, what do you say? Let's start talking about what we would LIKE to see happen next. But I only want to hear psitive thoughts.

I do agree and have said here myself, there is plenty of blame to go around for the current situation. I think Obama has done the right thing in already having an economic summit and you can be sure that come 1/20/09, they will hit the ground running.

I think the GOP has other things they ought to think about, rather than knee jerk opposition. Bi-Partisanship, obviously has to be practiced by both sides. Buzz,

What shall I attempt to explain that you will fail to agree? You want to start another round? Sure you are up for it? The rich have had a free ride for long enough. Next, they take the foreclosed homes on the market at 50% sale, soon homes will be back to their previous skyrocketing values, not the hands of the middle/lower class who were prospering for far too long with Greenspans overextented 5% interest rates that finally crashed the market. Banks are holding foreclosed homes, the rich will pay cash, the middle/lower class will rent from the wealthy slum lords, unless Obama forces a foreclosure moratorium, and loan rewrites, the balance of wealth will shift once again to those in power. Happened in the 30's right? There are thousands of millionaires, over 600 billionaires in the world. The internet has aided to the shifts of power by allowing companies to accrue wealth by outsourcing & via telecommunications they were able to cut enormous costs. Organizations don't have enough staff to tap donors, too many to count. What does that tell you? Imperialism rules the world.
