"A Sense of Place: The Works of Beston, Hay, and Finch"
At the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History
May 30 through December 20, 2008
Henry David Thoreau, "that inland dweller," as naturalist and author Robert Finch calls him in his work, A Place Apart, "once observed that the seashore was 'a most advantageous point from which to view the world.'" Indeed, Cape Cod's fertile literary environment, Finch notes, "seems to have borne him out."
Over the past 400 years the Cape's landscape and its people have probably inspired more memorable writing than any other nonurban area of comparable size," writes Finch. It is, of course, not primarily the amount of writing about this place, but the extraordinary quality and wide appeal of so much of it that is remarkable."
With Thoreau the guiding light in his 1865 masterpiece, Cape Cod, three singular nature writers emerged over time, inspired by the master in remarkable ways--Henry Beston, John Hay and Finch himself. Their writings about the Cape have sustained an incomparable sense of place and have moved generations to walk in the peninsula's fragile splendor and preserve its uncommon beauty.
This month at the start of a stunning, year-long exhibit, The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History off Route 6A in Brewster celebrates the contributions of Beston, Hay and Finch, whose collective writings are unequaled in the annals of nature writing. To fully grasp Cape Cod's mysteries, one must drink in the words and lyrical eloquence that tenders this narrow land its sense of place.

Marcia has over thirty years experience in biology, field ornithology, and environmental education, and is licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to keep owls. Her live owls were rescued after being injured and have permanent limitations that prevent them from surviving in the wild.
Most of us have heard or perhaps had a glimpse of an owl, but how many of us have met this magnificent live raptor up close and personal? Children from the audience will be invited to participate in hooting lessons one-on-one with an owl! We'll learn how owls are able to fly silently, why they rank as supreme hunters, which ones eat skunks, and how people can protect owl habitats.
Eyes on Owls is a special once-a-year program not to be missed. Call 508.896.3867, Ext. 133 soon... reservations fill quickly.
