The New Age is Green

The New Age is Green

by Richard C. Bartlett of Cotuit

"The Stone Age didn't end because they ran out of stones. The people just got smarter." This proverb is floating around the world now in relation to the climate/energy crisis we are all in. The Fossil Fuel Era is ending and the Age of Green is in the ascendancy.

We, the people, have most of us gotten smarter. We are able to hear the scientists and the environmentalists' message. It is amazing that even a small percentage of the public seems able to ignore the changed reality.

Those who should be our leaders and work for our best interests are (shockingly!) aiding the polluters of our air and waters.

Locally, we have Cape Wind with its' clear environmental benefits supported by 75% of our residents. Clean Power Now has an astounding 12,000 well informed members supporting the wind farm. The opposition, in spite of spending many millions of dollars, is losing  all its' court cases and is failing to win over the populace.

An anomaly is the position of most of our officialdom. Those who should be our leaders and work for our best interests are (shockingly!) aiding the polluters of our air and waters. Governor Deval Patrick and State Representative Matt Patrick are lonely leaders in
sync with the majority of voters. The rest are polluticians not worthy of support. They should realize that the natives are getting restless.

Right..
Like Al Gore living in a huge mansion telling the rest of us to conserve..

The lemmings are multiplying by the millions here and worldwide,,succumbing to the demagoguery of polticians speaking doublespeak..

Reminds me of the 60's and 70's..
when the stoned out generation hailed the 'destroy the establishment" bands..
as they drove away in limos to their beautiful homes and fat bank accounts..

ahh..Times never change..
just a new breed of fools..

as well stated...

The environmental problems Earth is contending with won't be solved by starting another religion, which is exactly what uncritical "new age" environmentalism is.

It demands science and engineering, which is all about objective assessments and tradeoffs. While the push should clearly be towards alternative energy sources, it's inevitable fossil fuels will be a part, so they should be made as efficient as possible.

And it demands a collective commitment to the commons, including realizing, for instance, that not only is nuclear power a component of a solution, but that people need to moderate their NIMBY attitudes about disposal of spent nuclear waste, or about increasing federal tax rolls to pay for alternative energy development, not only space-based and wind and tidal, but exotic nuclear power like thorium-based.

It would greatly help to support education in science and technology as well. Everyone can help there, starting with parents insisting that kids do homework before they do anything else, and including riding bicycles instead of cars.

I feel like I must be living in another world. As many scientists that "prove" climate change is man made, there are equal numbers that disagree. The reality of climate change seems to escape many people. Fact: at one point the exact spot where I am sitting in Orleans was at one point in time under miles of ice. Fact: There is now no ice! Even more mind blowing the ice grew and melted BEFORE the existence of man!!! The planet and mother nature is MUCH bigger than you and I. I agree with caring for the planet and caring for nature. I heartily disagree with the enslavement of the richer nations in B.S. science and a new religion. Also, has anyone thought about the fact that wind power is not constant and the turbines are backed up with natural gas generators. What kind of "carbon footprint" does that leave? Hmmm

About This Blog

oped3An op-ed is a piece of writing, expressing an opinion. The name originated from the tradition of newspapers placing each columns on the page opposite to the editorial page. Thus the term "op-ed" is simply a combination of "opposite" and "editorial." The difference with this one, however, is that you can reply immediately by commenting below.
