I am a family man with several grown children and many grandchildren, all living on the Cape. They are the future of everything and I want to leave them a world that I have done my best to improveFor more than 25 years we have been one of the premier agencies on the Cape. Mall Watching
When I go to the mall I spend a lot of time on the benches in the main concourse watching the crowds go by. I usually come away with new respect for mothers of small children. You can learn much about people and our own demographic by watching shoppers at the mall. I am reminded of how my grandparents, many years ago would angle park their car along the main street of my small town so they could observe the coming and going of Friday night shoppers. I guess I am continuing a family tradition by mall watching. Archie, Betty and Veronica of long ago are no longer on the scene, nor is the local soda joint. The last time we saw that was on "Happy Days" on television. The same sociology is at work today at the mall as was in those old comic books, except that it seems we have more of the Jughead characters than we had in the 40's and 50's.
Intimidating groups of teenagers adorn the landscape. Sometimes dressed in black T-shirts, low slung jeans and chains with evidence of body piercing. I don't know what happens when these kids buy clothes, but for the boys it appears essential that everything they wear be four or five sizes larger than it need be. They are very noisy when together, their gregarious nature is reinforced when they are in a pack and it is not unusual for them to shout, scream, and totally embarrass passive observers standing by. If they are alone or in couples, they undergo complete personality changes and act like anyone's child or grandchild. Many are the times I have renewed my respect for middle school teachers by studying the challenges of their young clients at the mall. Some of these kids are continually engaged in cell phone conversations...sometimes with each other as they saunter through the area in the same pack.
There are probably few malls in the nation as predominantly Caucasian as the Cape Cod Mall. In other places you will see significant percentages of blacks and Asians. Not so here on the Cape. Ethnic faces do appear, particularly Hispanic ones, but the number of minorities are nowhere near as plentiful as what I have observed at malls in Connecticut or New York.
The security guards are an interesting lot. Bigger than the average person, they walk quietly among the shoppers, wearing atrocious haircuts usually talking into a microphone or on a cell phone. You get the feeling that they are young men playing at being the police rather than the real McCoy. They are not armed with guns, they carry batons.
Sometimes I pick a bench near the pet store. The cute puppies in the windows are a magnet for the under four year old set who love to drag their parents there to inspect the inventory.
Most of the males I observe wear sneakers... young men or old men, sneakers are the footwear of choice. Sandals show up in the warmer weather and they and shorts are interesting because you can inventory the large amount of tattoos that live on ankles and lower legs. Old timers like me are continually asking themselves, "What were they thinking?"
Watching parents with small children create a special appreciation for my idea of family responsibilities. It engages all of one's attention and energy to take a three year old to the mall. With no difficulty at all, the toddlers can break away and run into Olympia sports, pick up a baseball bat, and start whacking things. And yet, I see harried mothers pushing two seater strollers with screaming children. If this is their idea of a day out, think about how bad it must be at home.
Almost every young man wears some kind of baseball cap, usually filthy with grease or grime and for the very lucky, tattered around the edges. Sweatshirts with the names of local high schools or colleges abound. Every once in awhile you see a mature person or even a senior citizen sporting a brand new shiny Patriots or Celtics jacket.
Then there are the exercise walkers who are usually at least 50 years old and characterized by their constant pace and their serious facial expressions. These are not window shoppers or people looking for fellowship. They are pursuing a pet project vigorously. You can see old men sitting around food tables playing cards. If there were a bocci court you get a feeling they would be there.
Sometimes I am joined on my observation bench by others. Often they have sore feet or some kind of walking problem. Frequently the men have given up on following their wives through the stores and are just looking for rest for their weary bodies. We usually strike up conversations.

Some of them are grotesque-looking and can be intimidating. I can tell you that they do not make me feel like buying things.
I hate shopping and hate malls. But for the underclass, who live in not-so-nice dwellings, and perhaps are not regularly employed, malls are a haven and a place to enjoy hanging out.
On the rare occasion that I am in the Mall on a weekday during working hours (9 - 5) I am always astonished to see how many able-bodied young men there are, just hanging out (not teens).
Why aren't they working?
Grotesque=a 50 lb. + overweight, pimply teen with a mohawk, numerous facial piercings, and pants almost falling off. Maybe he can't do much about the pimples, but the rest of it ain't helping.
And sure, there are lots of people who work nights and whatever.
But these guys I'm talking about are not just dashing in to the mall to buy something and leave. They are haaaaaanging out. They have nowhere to go, nothing to do, and it's Wednesday at 11 am. If they worked nights, they'd be sleeping. If they worked weekends, and it was their day off, they'd be running errands, not hanging out.
They are part of a fast-growing segment of America: young males who live at home with mama (no daddy, there never was one) and who have never held a job.
That can't be good.
You weren't ever a rebellious teenager? I can see that.
I hope those who you love and care about never go off the BMI weight chart, never experiment with their hair, never pierce anything but their ears, you probably are of the school one in each ear and only on girls, and always stay within the bounds of societal norms.
And walking past loud, obnoxious, freaky-looking groups of teens does not put me, or anyone else, in the mood to linger, enjoy, and buy.
A kid with a face like a tackle box is not on ads for Cape Cod Mall.
I'm no fan of kids going out of their way to act obnoxious or to harass other mall patrons -- that's what the security guards and posted signs about conduct are there for.
But to suggest that someone who shows up at the mall in the middle of the day who doesn't agree with capemom's refined sense of what's "normal" must therefore be some welfare leech from a broken home is beyond prejudiced. That's just ignorant, and pretty g_d_mn stupid.
And every time you go to the mall, you see young men doing this. No, it's not normal and most people wouldn't consider it to be. I am suggesting that perhaps a percentage of them are less than gainfully employed.
The mall is the one FREE place that the teenage population of Cape Cod has to congregate and hang out and simply been teenagers during the off season. I’d be surprised if anyone reading this was shocked by that statement. All I’m trying to say is, until the individual towns on The Cape decide funding a youth center is “worth it”, the mall is going to be the, for back of a better phrase, breeding ground for the teenage population.
But of course that was in the 80's when everyone was a faux preppie and relatively slim.
Although what's worse--wide wale corduroy pants and Izod shirts or 5 piercings in each eyebrow...hard to say, hard to say...
It's not that much, lemme tell ya. Because business owners don't want to hire someone with a tackle box face. Because most people don't want to see it, it's sickening.
You'd better not, because unless you're in a hipster biz, your customers are not going to trust or buy from someone who looks like that. I wouldn't, and believe me, there are a lot of people out there like me. That's just reality.
You say that my customers wouldn't trust or buy from this person, if they're coming into the establishment to receive goods or services provided by said establishment the physical appearance of my staff should not hold precedence over the quality of said goods and services. If that is the case then their patronage to this hypothetical establishment is not wanted.
If you don't want someone's business because they are shallow enough not to buy from you because they don't like looking at a self-created freak, I am here to tell you that you will soon be out of business.
People who have pink mohawks and many facial piercings have done this to deliberately provoke a negative reaction in people, because they don't like themselves, don't like other people, and have an axe to grind with society.
I'll buy a candy bar in Tedeschi's from them, but that's about it.
But hanging out in a mall during the day for hours on end is a pretty good indicator. I'm saying this as a hippie 20 year old who has never, ever seen the virtue in hanging out in malls (not that I'd have the time if I did).
As for the tattoos, I realize that they are permanent and people do crazy things when they are young but that now they are grown up and they can't get rid of tattoos.
I am referring to people who have 12 facial piercings, blue hair, AND tattoos, the whole works. Because it's willfully provocative on their part and shows a mild level of sociopathology.
But guess what, the world hasn't read your textbooks.
I am here to tell you that there are many, many people like me who would never hire someone who looks like that because it reflects badly on my company.
Am I prejudiced? No. Because people can't choose their gender, race, physical handicaps, ethnic background, sexuality, etc.
But somewhere between the 6th facial piercing and the 17th tattoo, such a person must be saying to themselves:
I am cooler than other people who don't want to look like me. I enjoy having people stare at me. I don't care if my appearance actively prohibits me from many opportunities. Because I am too cool to judge people on their appearance so why are they judging me?
Well, it would seem to me that he is all too concerned with his appearance to the point where it defines him. Like some bimbo who gets 10 plastic surgeries.
tongue piercings, chin piercings: What is it about?
If he could care less less about his appearance, why does he spend 100's, if not 1000's, of dollars altering his body?
I hope you like your job, honey, and I mean for the rest of your life, because this guy is never going to support you.
He's too busy spending his time and money on grotesque permanent body alterations which serve no productive purpose whatsoever.
I mean, I spend bucks on getting my roots and highlights done every six weeks, but I'm a girl.
Whatever, I guess he's your kind of guy and not mine. I've never, ever met a straight man who is inordinately concerned with his appearance who wasn't screwing around, lazy, and/or half a con man.
I shouldn't have to defend him but he is a hardworking (40+ hrs) a week, never had anything more than a speeding ticket and moral man. He would NEVER even think of screwing around on me and looks down on men who do.
When women take care of themselves that is never the way of thinking, why such a double standard? I hope you are raising your kids in the year 2007 to be open minded and get to know people before passing judgement.
One last thing, obviously you've never been with a man with a tongue ring or you'd never ask why...sorry !!!
It is just so super classy that your husband is advertising to the world every time he talks that he is preoccupied with a sexual activity which in this day and age, is not considered to be particularly exotic.
One final thing, just watch the comments about my husband...he has more class and above all moral character than anyone related or associated with you could ever dream about. Funny you chose the word "equipped" Does he require batteries of will a long extention cord do?
They may well come home from college with their tongues pierced or digits amputated or whatever crazy thing is trendy in the future.
But I would hope they would come to their senses by the time they were forty, which your husband clearly has not done.
Talk about a rude awakening--those tattoos and piercings are gonna look adorable when he's wrinkly and sagging in another 15 years.
And he will wrinkle and sag, because despite his best efforts not to grow up, Mother Nature has another plan for him.
What you don't know could fill an ocean.
My husband is a grown man and probably had experiences that you've onlyread about when you are alone and none of your country club mini-van soccer moms aren't looking. He's toured with rock bands as security and been a mixed martial arts fighter. When he started working with kids is when he slowed down. He will look just as good as anyone else looks with wrinkles as I will. Live for today and worry about the future when it comes. You miss alot of life if you worry about 15 years from now. WOW, you must have big frown/worry lines...don't do Botox that would be an enhancement..you know what that leads to.
I hope you stop judging before you hit nursing home age or you know where your headed.
You have no idea what I know or don't know.
The hub and I both hate golf and do not belong to a country club and couldn't afford it. My kids hate soccer and I hate mini vans.
No lines on my face yet but that's probably only because of the fat pushing them out.
We've both had our wild times involving sex, drugs, and rock and roll but have settled down mostly.
Sure, I smoke crack while driving the kids' carpool, but I roll down the windows first;) It's called parenting.
"if your not laugh'in your not livin'"
If there were more youth programs on the Cape (are there any?) like boys and girls clubs and afterschool programs geared to strengthen character of lost teens, maybe there wouldn't be "thugs" running around selling drugs, crashing parties, beating up innocent teens, or worse---like we heard about in that trial. If you ignore your problems on the Cape, they are bound to get worse. If there is poverty, there is crime. No jobs--mean frustated people. Moving to Appalacia is not always an option for everyone. Every community is responsible for it's citizens. If the Cape doesn't want middle class living there, they should hang a sign for all to see. Let them keep the wealthy, elite wannabe's, and illegal foreign help. Their gravy train won't last forever.
Body piercing is one thing---terrorizing a community is something more.
You see, she couldn't make it here and would like to blame everyone but herself for her miserable failure.
The fine youth in Cambridge/Boston/Sommervile with multiple piercing are productive youth working in the arts and coffee shops. Their much different from their "nasty" peers on Cape Cod.
Hey Crusader why is it that your City of Sommerville has a "Gang Loitering Ordinance"? Or why does Boston have a "City Wide Anti-Crime" unit?
Your arguments and bias are pathetic.
You say the youth of Cape Cod are troubled? Sure, there are some.
I just compared Somerville to various schools on the Cape looking at MCAS scores, plans of seniors, and all the NCLB data--low income, English not proficient, etc.
In the aggregate, the Cape schools far outperform Somerville, and there is a much lower % living in low income households, etc.
Some particularly poor performing schools on the Cape are Mashpee and DY, but they are offset by Chatham, Nauset, and Sandwich.
The gang activity and youth crime rate are much higher in Boston and the surrounding areas. In those areas there are youth groups EVERYWHERE so your argument they work is wrong. They work for some but not all.
The cape also does a VERY good job in detaining the youth that need it. Take a look at the 3 programs in Brewster, Barnstable County Jail, Teamworks in Plymouth...etc..
Just stop HATING on the cape..kids hang in malls everywhere and some are good and some aren't. Do you remember what it was like to be young at all?
Public schools are problematic everywhere. No one seems to want to address this problem you have with your local LE protecting your local thugs.
We have the BEST jobs, BEST colleges, BEST services for OUR people. Too bad Cape Cod can't say the same for its rag-tag small town life.
And retiree's around the country are now realizing that there are better places to live out their golden years---where there are REAL services that don't charge them exhorbant fees. Cape Cod is just a feeding frenzy on outsiders and elders. You can keep it. Job you say? HA! I landed the best job ever, in just a couple of months. Never could I get that on your sandpit!
That's why the traffic is backed up for miles to get over the bridges and that's why they spend over 1.3 billion dollars here every single year, that's how bad it sucks.
Visitors couldn't care less about cops who supposedly don't arrest locals. All they know is they come here, they don't get robbed or raped, they have a great time and they leave.
Do you read the police logs? Because I see plenty of names belonging to locals, and I mean, these people have been here for generations: Nickerson, Eldedge, Sears, Lopes, Gonsalves, Small, etc. etc. These guys are L-O-C-A-L.
Buzz is right, you just have sour grapes because you couldn't make it here. You got canned from your jobs, your townie boyfriend dumped you, and now you're living in the city--Somerville is just magical in July.
And BTW, the local boyfriend is here in the city making three times the salary he got paid from his local employer. His dad left in 1970 for Maine, as did many old timers. Try to preach your BS to someone you can BS. "As long as you go along....you can get along".....
I have good news to report. Since you left the Cape, the "wacko" problem seemed to go away. Coincidence? I doubt it.
Crusader..could you be any more hateful. I can tell you didn't grow up on the "other side" of the bridge or you would realize that living in Summahville is nothing to brag about.
Can you say bitter party of one?
Crusader..could you be any more hateful. I can tell you didn't grow up on the "other side" of the bridge or you would realize that living in Summahville is nothing to brag about.
Can you say bitter party of one?
I thought her boyfriend was self-employed and she had tried starting a business herself? Funny how the facts change.
It must be tough living in Somerville this time of year. No beautiful beaches to go to, no antique shopping along beautiful 6A. No wonderful little ice cream shops like 4C's. No early evening harbor crusies or bike rides along the senic rail trail. No national seashore beaches to stroll, no sunsets on Race Point beach. None of the best golf courses in the state.
Yep, Cape Cod sure sucks Crusader..... Glad you're not here!
Bittersweet...happens all the time it isn't just Cape Cod. Sad but true.
Providence ain't bad, though. Only 45 minutes from Boston, and 45 minutes from the beach, and 45 minutes from Cape Cod. (I think I just gave away how fast I drive)
If you have information about the "local/locals" that commited the murder, I'm sure law enforcment authorities would love to talk with you.
How long have you lived on the Cape? I've lived here long enough to see many locals go to jail for all sorts of crimes... even murder. As a matter of fact I can't think of a suspect in a murder on Cape Cod that was convicted.. can you?
Would be nice to know who is writing on this blog, I'm betting mostly inside vested interests. Readership must be down these days.
My state rep. knows my story about the Cape & I tell all I know--just how corrupt the place really is, so your big secret is out!
Katie--What kind of inferno would you rather have? One that infects life or the weather?
For the unsuspecting tourist, all is grand--for others you are branded a "washahore" someone outside their "cape cod clique", you mean nothing--EXCLUSION is what you get & robbed of all your money by the pirates.
I still have my business & boyfriend started his own. I also have a full-time job that pays real benefits, tutition is free to further my career, I can go to NH in 45 minutes to soak up the sun.
At least people here are not the mean spirtited snobs---I've talked to more than a few who feel the same way about the Cape. My state rep says that case gave the Cape ONE BIG BLACK EYE--well get ready for another!
"Student speaker Jonathan Tutein said he is concerned about drug overdoses, robberies, shootings and corruption in Somerville. A lot of people don’t even know about these problems, or even never think they would happen in Somerville,”
It's okay Jonathan....Crusader's here now, she'll make it all go away.
Did some big bad Cape Codder make you cry?
You are so full of hate and bitterness the stench must just ooze off of you..or is that the fumes from living in Summahville near the factories in Chelsea? You go 45 mins in traffic to soak up the sun...wow..I just go out my front door.
I also have a job with real benefits and all the bells and whistles..that really isn't an achievement. As for furthering your career, it will never happen , why you ask? The bitterness is just weighing you down, like an anchor to a boat!
Mean spirited snobs..hmmm...Do you have a full length mirror or a hand on to see that?
Now that you are from Summahville you probably need someone to explain that to you.
Buzz- If I had information, the police is the last place I would go! Now that's sad!!
Just punch "Somerville Corruption or Racism" in google and see what you get.
Here's one: "After living here a while I soon observed that certain individuals and special interests were influencing Somerville politics and influencing the committees and boards that oversee how the city is run and spends money it to an unhealthy degree."
Crusader.... please just go away. Leave us all to suffer in peace here on this pathetic spit of land we call home.
Hey, last one in the ocean is a wacko profiteer!
You said an "innocent man was convicted". Don't leave us hanging. A very special person was murdered in front of her child. Please help get the real killer put away.
Can I give you the DA's phone number?
Crusader's got a great job--in academia. Since there aren't any 4 year colleges on the Cape, she won't find her perfect job here (I used to work in academia) characterized thusly: great benefits (may or may not be unionized) okay pay, no accountability, because they don't have to make a profit.
This is why college costs so much--they are bloated, self-perpetuating bureaucracies which are going to have to get lean and mean like the rest of the world or they will be outsourced and undercut.
At least Cru can take courses like "The Victimization of Women and Light Sockets in the 20th Century: Exploitation by Men and Bulbs."
I think she's also enrolled at the Cambridge Center for Woman course: "How to hate a man without even trying".
buzz; I wish people here would care about getting the real killer behind bars. They're satisfied to let the wrong man hang.
I must of missed it. I thought there was a trial in Superior Court where evidence was presented, the suspect was defended and the jury decided.
Is it suppose to work differently? Again, if you have information on the real killer.... please come forward. Then, we can honestly say there was a miscarriage of justice and let the accused go free.
For someone who professes to be so happy, you sound completely miserable. What's wrong? Business down these days? Feeling the pinch?
A good friend once told me, "Important people do not have to bully others because they already know who they are." Do you know who you are, capemom? Just someone hanging onto a man's wallet? Too afraid to venture out on your own, perhaps?
The city provides opporunities in abundance--the Cape does not. Crime is everywhere, but the entire world knows that Cape Cod has not given a black man a fair trial and probably never will for other minorities. You can't say that about Boston.
Somerville is a great place to live because there are people who respect one another and work together for the greater good--employers on the Cape work only for themselves.
Someone from the Cape told me the place is an "asylum without the bars". They got that right. People who can't make it in the city move to the Cape to hide.
"the entire world knows that Cape Cod has not given a black man a fair trial" --what planet are you living on?
I'm sure all the refugees in Darfur are crying their eyes out over Christopher McCowen's unfair trial.
As a matter of fact, in many African/Asian/Middle Eastern tribal cultures, the fact that Christopher was in Christa's house, even with her consent, never mind the fact that he had sex with Christa, would give her father the right to kill him.
"You can't say that about Boston." Oh yeah, the people of Charlestown were absolutely thrilled about busing in the 70's.
The people of Southie are true advocates for African-Americans and would be thrilled if their daughter Bridget married Jamal from Roxbury.
Well no surprise--that explains the racism you have on Cape Cod. When Chris McCowen is found innocent, maybe you will eat your own words capemom.
You talk about me being hateful? The truth hurts.
Your failed attempt at character assasination at me & others who don't go along with your BS, & lack of respect has forced your true colors to be revealed.
Let the readers determine who is telling the truth here.
I wonder how all those New York investors now feel about buying property on Cape Cod? Must seem
like they bought a spit of land on someone's plantation back during the civil war. I wonder how many more robes you'd find tucked away in those dusky attics.
Better get the brooms out & burn those robes now. Looks like there will soon be another ugly chapter shining down for all to see...
Ya, we all have lot's of secrets down here on Kape Kod and we're all in it together..... so if you or the other 10's of thousands of uppity folk plan on com'in down here this weekend.... ya better all beware of us in our pick-up's.
My sister and I are celebrat'n our wedd'in aniversary this weekend and we don't need no Sommerville folk to ruin it....ya here?
I don't hate men who don't abuse. Sometimes the women can be worse than the men. Lack of opporunities, addictions and ignorance is what cultivates this negativity. Christa did not deserve to die the way she did. For those who have said she was a whore and deserved what she got are the real whores.
if you think that trial was fair, you should watch it again. But since you asked...
Jeremy Frazier said,"for a year now, people suspected me of having something to do with this crime." WHY?
Jeremy Frazier got a phone call from the Yarmouth police barracks the alleged night of the murder. Cops know nothing about it? WHY? Should be easy to trace, don't you think??
Jeremy Frazier had a phone belonging to a convicted murderer who has been freed. WHY is he free? He confessed to murder! How do these two know each other?
What about the car/van/suv seen barrelling out of Christa Worthington's house Saturday afternoon?
No investigation. WHY?
What about that juror and the suspicious way she was ousted?
Are you asleep?
3 words.....DNA
a three letter word-
DNA=SEX. PERIOD!
Ya, you're right. He just happened to have sex with her the night she died and didn't feel it necessary to tell anyone.
Furthermore, there are no phone records of him calling her or her calling him to invite him over for some casual sex.
Poor guy, wrong place wrong time. Let's play the race card, it worked for OJ.
I can tell you one thing Boston has the Cape doesn't that you'll benifit from.... can you say McClean Hospital?
That's right, McClean Hospital in Belmont. One of the finest hospitals in the country. Unlike the Cape which can't match Boston hospitals---it's trying, but has a long way to go. The doc's don't want to be there either. That's why you have so many problems--people with mental disabilities need treatment the Cape lacks. I worked in your healthcare system, it's a far cry from what Boston has to offer which people come from overseas. And while your at it, check on the number of sex offenders you have registered down there. Seems the number is rising. Got the info straight from a reliable source who knows. It's a safe haven for some who are running from the law.
As bittersweet pointed out, that is how a convicted murderer got to work for a Cape moving company. Does the Cape make it a practice to hire convicted murderers? I guess when the price is right, they will hire anyone, right? This was the same moving company who employed his buddy JF.
That's because Cape Cod is not a CITY like Boston. And why would we need such facilites when they're an hour's drive away?
You are really going out on a schizoid limb here in your efforts to trash the Cape.
Do you have any evidence to prove that the Cape has a higher rate of level-3 sex offenders living here than Boston or Akron, Ohio? The number may have risen in the last 10 years, but so has the general population.
That is quite an accusation to wave around.
Check out the latest on the Wellfleet balding man luring a child into his car. What other evidence do you need? Some of us have to live in the real world.
A former member of your wondrous LE told me---that was convincing enough for me. And that is all I will say about it. I know how some like to use information against the innocent. All manipulation and twisted stories. Maybe it is time for Cape Codders to take their heads out of the sand and look around.
Eastham D & D can't heat muffins & bagels because of the local coffee shop monopoly. Brewster Pakistan man was prevented a gas station, & town selectmen compared it to 911 if it went in. Lucky he had a good lawyer & judge in BOSTON ruled in favor of the gas station. But it cost the taxpayers thousands because of someone's bigotry & ideas of no-free-enterprise on Cape Cod.
Off cape land buyers in Wellfleet are prevented from building while locals get to....stories abound.
Do yourself a favor, check into McClean for the weekend. Things will become a lot more clearer if you do.
I'm sure your wonderful insurance at your wonderful job and your wonderful college will pay for it.
So is this the best you can do? When people speak out about the injustices of the Cape, you try to deem us all crazy? I suppose the former member of LE is nuts too? Good try, but you don't give your readers much credit do you?
I got news for you--most know that the Cape is filled with the mentally disabled. Personally, I don't have anything against people with disabilities, but just wish they would take their medication. A lawyer friend who is from the city but lives on the Cape said this to me as well.
And more than just a few locals and newcomers have admitted to me that there are many things NOT RIGHT on Cape Cod. Say whatever you want. People who know me, know I speak the truth.
You can't have it both ways---either join the rest of civilization or take your bridge down and live out in the middle of the Atlantic. See how long you survive without the tourist and second home dollar.
I've lived on Cape Cod for 30 years... I came from somewhere else. I work in Boston.... yes, I do the drive everyday. In my line of work, I get to meet everyone from politicians, professors, doctors, CEO of major companies, professional athletes, actors and even the Vice President of the US. I even have your friend Howie Carr's number in my cell phone.
My point is not to impress you, but to let you know how "wrong" you are about the people of Cape Cod. I've traveled the country and world and there's no place like Cape Cod.
If I had a dollar for every-time you mention "a lawyer friend, a LE friend" that has told you some tall tale about someone or something, I'd be a rich man.
I have many friends on the Cape with high-profile jobs and I've never heard the stories you have. When it comes down to it, the Cape is no different than anywhere else.... it's just 10 X more beautiful.
People live/work there entire lives in the hopes that one day they can move to Cape Cod.
There is some truth to the theory that the Cape, like Florida, and some parts of California, tends to attract people seeking a geographical cure: they have something wrong in their lives and they think coming back to a beautiful place they vacationed in as a child will solve their problems.
They tend to come to the Cape, fail to get their life together, and then head for Florida.
The rising real estate market has put a damper on this kind of thing lately, since it costs so much to even rent a place here.
So Buzz, I don't know if you're married or even if you're a guy (probably), but maybe the next time you're working in Boston (like tomorrow) you and Crusader can discuss Howie over a vegan gluten-free, dolphin-safe, fairly traded cup of chai latte served by a buzzcutted, bra-less, multiply-pierced militant feminist woman named TJ with a tattoo that says "Hear Me Roar" in some cafe near where Crusader works.
I like Howie Carr too, I just don't listen to him that often because I am always schlepping the kids around during the time he's on.
Thanks.... but no thanks. Yes, last time I checked, I was a guy. My beautiful wife of 24 years can speak for that.
If you "read" what I said, I acknoledged Crusader liking Howie.
I like my coffee black, my vegan meal with a extra side of beef and am partial to bra's (my wifes) from Victoria Secrets.
As for Crusader..... I think we know what she likes and it's not Cape Cod.
I "non-practice" every day.
Save a tomato.....eat a vegitarian.

About This Blog
This is a blog about the observations and events I witness on this sandy peninsula after several decades of working, thinking, feeling and writing about the quality of life here. My biases will no doubt show, I am neither conservative nor liberal and have a strong interest in public affairs, local politics, schools and religion.
Then, just while they're mouthing off to me, the Colonel happens to wander over.
He's generally not pleased, and even the big black kids back off when he puts the bass in his voice. It's really funny to watch.
He gets mad at me for "bringing it on" by walking by them, but he's not that difficult to outsmart in an argument.
