Health Care as a Human Right on the November 4 Ballot

Health Care as a Human Right on the November 4 Ballot

Two informational meetings coming up in October

While most voters are well aware of the presidential election set for November 4, as well as local offices and three state-wide ballot initiatives, many may not know that in some districts an additional ballot initiative will appear.  In three of the six Cape districts this November, voters will have the chance to say YES to health care as a human right.

capecareco_300Two informational and organizing meetings are upcoming.  On Tuesday, October 14, there will be an organizing meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Brewster Ladies Library on Route 6A to work for passage of the policy question on the November ballot in the First Barnstable district.  A similar meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:00 pm at the Wellfleet Public Library for the Fourth Barnstable district.

The public is invited to both meetings and can live in any district on the Cape to help with the effort.

Cape voters in the following three districts will have this initiative on their ballots:

  • First Barnstable
  • Fourth Barnstable
  • Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket

The ballot question reads as follows:  "Shall the representative from this district be instructed (1) to support legislation that would establish health care as a human right regardless of age, state of health or employment status, by creating a single payer health insurance system that is comprehensive, cost effective, and publicly provided to all residents of Massachusetts, and (2) to oppose any laws penalizing the uninsured for failing to obtain health insurance."

The Cape Care Coalition, the citizen organization working to create a community-owned health care plan for Cape Cod, is helping with the ballot initiative campaign.  For more information, go to www.capecare.info, email info@capecare.info, or call toll free, 1-877-700-8070.
