Cape Cod is Our Disneyland

mihosdisneyNext time my kids ask to go to Disneyland,
do you think I can get away with telling them
that we already live there ?

This was the sentiment uttered by none other than Christy Mihos, gubenatorial candidate and Cape resident.

The occassion was the candidates debate at MIT the other night. The topic of the forum, which Mihos, Deval Patrick, Chris Gabrielli and Grace Ross attended, was the Environment.

Christy worked the Disneyland comment into an answer to a question about Cape Wind.   It seems that a wind farm would upset his idea of heaven on earth, Cape Disney.

mihoshouse300And Mihos  lives in not just any old corner of Cape Cod, but the MOST exclusive piece of real estate on the pennisula, Great Island (left).

In a stunning moment of unbridled, if not ill-advised, pandering, he told the heavily pro-wind audience that he would install a wind turbine not only at his house (!) but at each one of his stores (!!!).

This must be the new strategy of the Alliance to Save the Sound (ASS) co-chairman; every opponent must install a wind trubine in their front yard!  These capitalists are not ones to pass up a good tax credit, you know.

mihospin3There's profit to be made in these "god damned things" as the other (ASS)co-chairman refers to them.

For the record, I will be able to see Christy's wind turbine from my house.  But it will also be seen from Kennedy's Compound. Not to mention Bill Koch's Osterville mansion.

I'm not sure if Christy cleared his idea with those guys.

It sounds like he's saying, "if you can't beat them, at least beat them to the punch."

No wonder Sue Nickerson seems so demoralized these days.

I don’t think he will be able to put a wind turbine up due to FAA Air Space Restriction. I guess he will be able to pay for one. Just look at what he charges for gas at his stores. It’s 10 to 20 more than off cape. He keeps his prices just as high as the other price gouger gas stations on the cape. I say BOYCOTT, get gas off cape when you can, send a message to the Price Gougers like Christy’s. Thank god he’s not a Republican. Plymouth, BJ’s 2.94 a gallon/w ethanol. To bring it full circle, Christy also doesn't care what the neighbors think about him blighting their landscape... and he also has his fists in the polluting-type fuel industry, as well.

Maybe he'll raise the ire of a low-level Kennedy, like Kevin or Jimmy. it'd be like going to the Bourne Braves instead of the Red Sox game.

Christy did nail it with his great analogy as reported by the Harvard Crimson:

Mihos expressed concern that Cape Wind would face cost overruns and never work as promised.

“If you like the Big Dig, you’ll love Cape Wind,” he said.

Stephen;

I have a soft spot in my heart for whistle blowers, like Christy, the Big Dig critic.

He's sharp enough to read the writing on the proverbial wall, Cape Wind would become the Big Dig of Nantucket Sound.

What will it take to make you realize that the clean, green, renewable machine, Cape Wind, sounds too good to be true? Practical application of the installation of nascent technology in the heavily traveled, fragile/hostile marine environment is a Herculean feat. Human error, bad siting, inexperience, time value money considerations, cost cutting and corner cutting have contributed to the $15 billion and growing Big Dig.

If Cape Wind is permitted for Nantucket Sound, it would become the world's largest Boondoogle that would require us to rename the "Big Dig" the "Little Dig."

He who does not learn from his mistakes is bound to repeat them. Christy Mihos knows what he’s talking about.

“If you like the Big Dig, you’ll love Cape Wind.”

I will trust those with a lot more knowledge and sense than Christy... To decide if Cape Wind will come into play in ACK Sound...

No doubt... There is, of course a learning curve in this evolving technology off shore... It is necessary however, to start here (in your bosses viewscape) in order to accomplish the mission of your prefered 30 miles out...

To compare the CW project to the big dig is ridiculous at best...

If for no other reason BD is a PERFECT example of having government part and parcel to a construction project...

As opposed to a private developers own company be entirely responsible for its construction and operation...

And profitibility.

To make the kind of statements that Christy has made about Cape Wind etc. just confirms to any intellegent voters what an error they will be making if they were to put him in office...

And believe me... They won't.

The Governor and Lieutenant Governor have sense, that’s why they oppose Cape Wind’s site selection, which never should have occurred in the first place. We did not anticipate the need to regulate a monster of all experimental technology projects, Cape Wind. We must select the sites appropriate for industrialization. Let’s not kid ourselves, this is an industrial use proposed for a tourist, bird, fishing area that is under active consideration for sanctuary status surrounded by sanctuary water. Of course, the developer has picked this location, the jewel of the Cape and islands, as his place to conduct an industrial experiment. We have dropped the ball, additionally, we have allowed the process to proceed without zoning, or comprehensive policy in place and that is just dumb. Cape Wind being considered compatible with the present use by heritage of Nantucket Sound is exceptionally dumb.

Why do you insist on misrepresenting my position in this issue as paid, other than the fact that you are loosing another argument? I am not paid, I am a volunteer advocate for the preservation of Nantucket Sound.

My former employer, unrelated to this issue, was a great "card" reader. He would advocate that I pay attention to the one who is "complaining" as that is the weak link in the organization.

You have been challenging my statements that I am not paid, and complaining. So I now wonder about your objectivity, and autonomy.

Barbara Hill is the recently appointed Executive Director of Clean Power Now as well as your wife, is this a true statement? I may have her title incorrect, my apologies if so.

It's a fair question, Stephen, as you continue to state that which is untrue about me, that I am paid for my strenuous objection to Cape Wind's proposal that implies that I lack ojectivity.

The driving force behind the BIG DIG was Ted Kennedy. He not only got the Federal Government to pay $7.5B of US taxpayer money for it, but got the State to pay the other $7.5B from Mass taxpayer dollars, so that friendly unions and relatives of hack politicans could line their pockets.

Do you know how many birds are killed every year by the BIG DIG?

The $1B Cape Wind project will be built with private money. No public dough. No pork. No patronage. It is therefore more likely to work.

Do you care that Christy built his stores with private money? Do you worry that they will create traffic, pollute the goundwater, charge too much for gas or milk, or will fail? Of course not.

Cape Wind will not only be profitable for their investors, but will pay royalties to US taxpayers, provide cheaper rates to their customers, and leave us all with cleaner air to breathe.

And unlike the BIG DIG, it's not likely to kill anyone either.

Your statement, "The $1B Cape Wind project will be built with private money. No public dough. No pork. No patronage. It is therefore more likely to work," "Is at best incomplete, and too often inaccurate and/or misleading," to borrow the DOI response to the Cape Wind DEIS.

Governmental subsidies define Cape Wind's objective, not "clean, green," but the money machine. "Government subsidies cause businesses to be run inefficiently because they rely on the subsidies to stay afloat," said billionaire businessman, Bill Koch. He also remarked, "The deal is a good one for Gordon, but a lousy deal for the people of Massachusetts."

Cape Wind, a "no-bid" deal, would be financed with $1 billion in taxpayer and ratepayer subsidies. Jim Gordon and his investors could reap annual savings of $27 million in federal tax credits, and as much as $82 million in state incentives.

The incentive of Cape Wind is not to provide clean air as the company demonstrates clearly by their announcement of the fossil fuel burning plant that they wish to site next to an elementary school.

Perhaps the warnings of the local navigators and airport officials regarding Cape Wind, that it would pose a "significant hazard to safe navigation," and be "lethal," have escaped you as evidenced by your comment, "And unlike the BIG DIG, it's not likely to kill anyone either."

And, unlike the BIG DIG, the Cape Wind project is predicted by experts to be lethal if permitted.

Krista [Member] writes:
The experts you refer to are not.
At best they are making unsubstantiated statements and abusing their position.

If the Steamship Authority is afraid that they will run into a turbine, we all have a bigger problem than we think. They would first run aground, which they are actually prone to do.

The Barnstable Airport Commission warnings not only were not taken seriously by the FAA, but totally disreguarded by Cape Air, the primary carrier affected by the wind farm.

Tell me this, why do these tax credits, which you refer to as tax subsidies, even exist? And why do you approve of their use in every other location except Nantucket Sound?

Were you quoting Bill Koch as an expert? Does it matter to you that he was charged with beating his wife and child, when they were living in Osterville? Never mind.

And by the way, are you an expert when you refer to the Sound as the Jewel of the Cape and Islands. Don't you have to be from the Cape or the Islands to be an expert on that?

Krista:
In November of 2004, The Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Barnstable Airports filed a formal objection to the placement of 130 Turbines in the middle of the 3 airports flight paths. These concerns were based on recent radar studies conducted by the UK Ministry of Defense. The FAA has not yet responded to this appeal. The Air Traffic Controllers Union at Cape Approach has stated that they, “could not think of a worse place to put these turbines.”

“Nantucket Sound is among the most densely traveled boating corridors in the Atlantic. The turbines would be perilously close to the main navigation channels for cargo ships, ferries and fishing boats. The risk of collisions with the towers would increase during the fogs and storms for which the area is famous. That is why the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises, which transport millions of passengers to and from the cape and islands every year, oppose the project.” Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

The federal government holds in trust the public domain, Nantucket Sound, the Jewel of the Cape and islands.’ As I am U.S. citizen, my lack of residency at the Cape and islands is irrelevant, to answer your question.

David F. Scudder, Vice President of Hy-Line Cruises in his letter to Senate and House Conferees of February 26, 2006:

“On the basis of public safety concerns, we have consistently and adamantly been against the wind farm project in the Sound since its inception. Navigating Nantucket Sound in all kinds of weather and traffic conditions is challenging enough without the introduction of these structures to complicate and restrict our routes.”
07/16/06 @ 1:00 am
barbaradurkin [Member] writes:
And, yes, Krista, I did quote Bill Koch as an expert. Bill Koch has spent more than 23 years in the energy business, and has a PhD in chemical engineering from MIT. As the world's largest seller of petroleum coke, an alternative fuel, and a producer of super-compliance coal and coal-bed methane, an alternative for natural gas, he qualifies as an expert. That’s why Jim Gordon approached him regarding Cape Wind, but Bill declined his offer to become involved as, in his expert opinion:

“When you do the math, it is clear that every other form of power generation would be cheaper to build, produce more electricity at a consistent rate and save consumers more money. When you consider the costs and risks of an offshore wind farm, and the fact that New England does not need more power, the project becomes nonsensical, a giant boondoggle for the benefit of one developer.”
07/16/06 @ 10:48 am
Jack Coleman [Member] writes:
Sorry, Barbara, you can't have it both ways. The only way Cape Wind reaps the benefits of "$1 billion in taxpayer and ratepayer subsidies" is by producing an abundance of electricity - it all hinges on production. And the electricity from the wind farm would be generated without any pollution, greenhouse gases or the use of millions of gallons of seawater daily to cool the turbines, as found at nuclear and fossil fuel-powered plants.

Generating electricity in this manner is in the public interest, regardless of how often you claim otherwise.
07/16/06 @ 11:53 am
barbaradurkin [Member] writes:
Jack, How Does Cape Wind Get it?

Neither Mitt nor Kerry get it, nor does our attorney general, Mihos, nor Ted, nor Congressman Delahunt, nor Atsalis, nor the Cape Cod Chamber, nor the Nantucket Chamber, nor the Steamship, Hy-Line, Barnstable, and Nantucket and the Vineyard airports' now appealing to the FAA; and the list continues to include 67% of the voters of Nantucket and 58? percent of the Mashpee voters who do not get Cape Wind. 3,300 members of the MA Fishermen's Partnership don't get it.
The DOI doesn't get Cape Wind, inaccurate misleading, yadda yedda.

I would think one would seriously consider the possibility that Cape Wind HAS selected the WRONG LOCATION, as in "location, location location."

Nantucket Sound is the wrong location as it is not suitable, too many use conflicts that put the public safety at risk, and the Endangered Species, and The Migratory Bird Act will eventually be a consideration. up to 6,600, birds will die per year if Cape Wind is permitted.

What were we reaping from all this, again, J

Boot it before it boots you, in other words.

SM [Member] writes:
I was wondering when Barbara was going to get around to the birds. The experts at Mass Audubon do not expect any kills. 6600 bird deaths per year is an outright fabrication. But you know that. It's another example of Alliance members promulgating the BIG LIE.
It might work with bird brains. But it won't with anyone else. Speaking of which, I have never heard Sue Nickerson or Charles Vinick mention 6,600 bird deaths. But I bet you can get Christy Mihos and Bill Koch to repeat it.

Without the damage to our natural enviornment that fossil fuels and people like you... And the d'Alliance would like us to continue to use for your own greedy and self-centered reasons.

FYI... Barbara Hill as you correctly indicated is the new Executive Director of Clean Power Now (CPN).

She is my FORMER wife of almost 20 years and the mother of our wonderful 18yo son Kahlil. I previously was married for a period of 10 years and have two beautiful and successful daughters Leigh Anne (27) and Ashley (25) who live in the Boston area.

Fortunatly for Barbara she is much smarter than I give her credit for and she continues to fend the likes of me off for various and sundry reasons and... If you can believe it uses examples of some of what I have posted on this blog site...

Such as: I am said to be...

Rude, crude, disgusting, annoying, childish, relentless, can't spell for crap and of course... embarressing to not only myself but to her.

Needless to say... There are times that I have been known to be at least mildly entertaining... as well as humerous - so I am told... and more than reasonably knowledgable about the most of the subjects I comment on...

Yes, and besides sex... Cape Wind is my most favorite topic.

Furthermore, although she has never mentioned this I think she is secretly dissapointed in me because she believes that I have ruined my chances of ever running for public office...

For example going up against 'Ted';~)
