A Zip Trip through Yarmouth

It was a cloudy but warm morning last friday when the Morning Fox News Team set up on Bass River Beach to show their viewing audience where they visited for their Zip Trip. Proud neighbors and friends join them as they showed their viewers just what Yarmouth had to offer. The second oldest town on Cape Cod has alot to be seen by the weary traveler. Packed within its 17 square mile area its three villages each have their own personalities.

South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouthport each have a special charm of their own, if one is willing to venture off the beaten path of route 6. Golf, minature golf, go carts, beaches, ponds, kayaks, restaurants of all types, ice cream, bike paths, nature walks, fishing, boat rides, history adventures, gift shops, antiques, gift shops, baseball games and lots of breathtaking scenery await at every turn. Its no wonder that the population triples in the summer.

Thanks to Fox for Zipping Through!!!!

Its a Doggy Easter

It was a Doggy Easter at the Brewster Ladies's Library today. The children gathered  early this morning to watch the dogs model their Easter Hat creations and learn about the duties they perform. They learned about these very special therapy dogs who have special duties. These activities include, but are not limited to, visits to hospitals, special needs centers, schools, and nursing homes. This happens because of a network of caring individuals who are willing to share their special animals in order to bring happiness and cheer to people, young and old alike. And sharing was what is was all about today. As the owners and their wonderfully behaved dogs allowed us to share in their day. The children watched in amazement as each dog showed that they could sniff out the special egg with their hidden treat. And together they shared an Easter Story and made new friends.

Happy Easter to all !!

Happy Halloween to All

So if you didn't carve out that pumpkin and you are feeling alittle creative try the recipe below.

Get a pumpkin about 3 pounds

Gather your

1/4 Stale Bread of your choice

1/4 lb cheese and cut in cubes

2 to 4 garlic cloves minced

4 strips of bacon crumbled

1/4 c snipped chives

1 tbsp minced fresh thyme

about 1/3 c heavy cream

and a pinch of fresh grated nutmeg

Preheat oven 350 degrees. In a bowl toss in bread, cheese, herbs and bacon in bowl. Season with pepper. Cut the top of the pumpkin in starlike cuts as opposed to straight cuts so that the lid does not fall in. Clean out and place on a baking sheet. Pour in your bread mixture into pumpkin then add cream. Plac the lid on and bake for 2 hours. Remove the lid for the last half hour so that the liquid will be absorbed and the stuffing mix will brown.

You can change this recipe a bit with your favorite additions.

Have Fun !!

Get that Pumpkin Ready

Don't ever miss the chance to view some great pumpkin art work at the Roger Williams Zoo. Next year mark your calendar and go brave the crowds if it be on a weekend. Its worth the trip. Sorry if you missed it this year, but here's some inspiration for your pumpkin carving tonight.

 Happy Halloween !!!

Inspiration in the Sand

Today as a new sun rises for me: everything lives, everything is animated, everything seems to speak to me of my passion, everything invites me to cherish it.

That is how I felt as I ventured out two weeks ago to see the annual Sandcastle contest on Mayflower Beach. With smell of salty ocean breezes blended with hint of tropical sun tan oil, I ventured out on the vast stretch of low tide beach to watch the artists create their vision of a summer in the sand. It was amazing to see families gathered together each with a specific task to make their creation a work of art. Whenever you get the chance, get out and watch art in action. A special salute goes out to the people who made their sand sculptures solo. You all did well and inspired me to plan my creation for next year.

I hope that you enjoy their art as I did.

Set Sail Back in Time

The Kalmar Nyckel (Key of Kalmar) was a Dutch built armed merchant ship famed for carrying Swedish settlers to North America in 1638 to establish the colony of New Sweden. A replica of the ship was launched at Wilmington,Delaware in 1997. The ship is docked in Provincetown until August 29. If you get a chance don't miss the chance to take a three hour sail where you return to time long forgotten.

Rodeo on Cape Cod

From beach sand to dusty dirt. From the smells of salty air to horses and steers. Its all about fun and the Cape Cod Stampede at the Barnstable Fairgrounds was the place to be. Last weekend a group called the CowSpirit presented a rodeo that left me wanting more. The Foundation is dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer care and research primarily by showcasing the sport of rodeo and other aspects of the western lifestyle. At this time, the Foundation’s chosen primary beneficiary was the Boston, MA based Jimmy Fund, the principle fundraising arm of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute

Don't miss the chance to catch it next year and help a worthy cause.

My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys by Willie Nelson

I grew up a-dreamin' of bein' a cowboy,
and Lovin' the cowboy ways.
Pursuin' the life of my high-ridin' heroes,
I burned up my childhood days.
I learned of all the rules of the modern-day drifter,
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long.
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them,
With the words of a sad country song.
My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.
Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery,
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare,
Knowin' well that your best days are gone.
Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen,
I let the words of my years fade away.
Old worn-out saddles, and 'old worn-out memories,
With no one and no place to stay.
My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

Sharking through the Summer

Every year the hunt is on in Chatham and this year is no different. The beach gets crowded with people staring out with binoculars and cameras hoping to catch that vision of  a shark. For now the waters are quiet with no swimmers in sight. The camera crews go and come bringing more crowds around them. It always amazes me why we drawn to the quest.

Yarmouth Family Carnival

Family fun can be found in a small but fun filled carnival this weekend.

At John Simpkins Field on Route 28 in Yarmouth across from the State Police Barracks.

Enjoy Carnival Food. Have fun on the rides and play those games for fun prizes.

Sponsored by St.David's Episcopal Church.

About

nancy_laverdiere_153A nurse of thirty-something years, I have transported myself to this somewhat quiet "island" for a peaceful existence more in tuned with people and nature.  I will share my views and experiences of living as a Cape Cod Washashore.
This blog will follow the journey of doing what Cape Codders do to survive - the trade off for a higher cost of living once that bridge is crossed. All to find our peace on picturesque beaches, inhaling fresh salty air, enjoying nature and finding art around us and in ourselves. I will share my views on all that the island has to offer.
