Googleable: A Tale of Two Houses

That Cape man who allegedly embezzled $5+ million
With a name like Windle, you shouldn't swindle, because you're too "Googleable"

house1_269    house2_270

The Windle family's 3-bedroom house (left) purchased in 1996; their current 7-bedroom house in Harwichport (right).

Cape Cod man charged with embezzling millions
HYANNIS, Mass. - A Cape Cod man has been charged with embezzling millions of dollars from his employer and using much of the cash to buy expensive pleasure boats.
According to testimony from an FBI agent, Jeffrey Windle of Harwich Port also is suspected of stealing from the Congregational Church of South Dennis, where he volunteered.
A complaint in U.S. District Court in Boston charges the 41-year-old with fraud.
Prosecutors allege Windle stole at least $5 million from Cambium Learning, a Natick-based provider of education materials for special-needs students. Windle was Cambium’s budget director.
It's amazing what ordinary people (like me) can dig up on you if you have a Googleable name like Windle.   By "Googleable," I mean uncommon.   Meaning, if I Google my own name without geographic qualifiers, the results are all about the 12,000 other Julie Brooks in the USA and not about me.

Fascinated by the story in today's Cape Cod Times about Jeffrey Windle, the 41-year-old resident of Harwich who was arrested by the FBI for stealing millions from his company and is suspected of stealing between $200 - $400K from his church,  the Congregational Church of South Dennis, I immediately began my digital digging.   I was curious about this man's unfortunate family (suspecting that there is no way a man with this much money would be single.)

A search of the property tax assessment records for the town of Harwich for Mr. Windle reveal that his 7-bedroom, 6.5 bath house in Harwich is assessed at $1,895,000 and was purchased in 2004 for $1,904,000 by E & S Realty Trust, located at 346 Trotting Park Road, in Dennis.    A search of the same records for the town of Dennis reveal that Jeffrey Windle and Jeannine Windle purchased the 3-bedrooom, 1.5 bathroom house (complete with lawn jockey) in 1996 for $145,000.

Googling the perhaps unsuspecting Jeannine

Googling the perhaps unsuspecting Jeannine Windle reveals that she was the president of the Ezra Baker School's parent-teacher committee (back when they lived in Dennis) and that the Windles were benefactors of the Harwich Mariners and served as a host family for two players on the Harwich Mariners  (hey, why not use those 7 bedrooms for a good cause.)  Jeannine was thanked in the Harwich Elementary School newsletter  for helping out with a kids' art show.

Jeannine is also named on the incorporation documents for E & S Family, LLC, incorporated in Florida.   Googling Jeffrey's name, the first search result is in connection with his church he is suspecting of looting, the South Dennis Congregational Church .   However, his name has been scrubbed from the page since Google indexed it.    Also, Jeffrey is mentioned as a defendant in a lawsuit in connection with several boats.

This is certainly a tragic and intriguing (to me at least) story of a man  who  drastically upgraded his and his family's  lifestyle, allegedly through embezzlement, over the course of four years.    Am I the only one with the rudimentary skills required to do the above Googling?  Of course not. Am I the only one who Googled the Windles?  Of course not.    We live in the information age, like it or not, and it's all out there.

You may think you are "ordinary people", but the ordinary journalists never thought of getting this treasure trove of information about the Windle swindle.

I went to Christmas services at that church the last two years (admittedly my only forays into a church in that period, except for funerals and weddings). I may have been standing next to that guy singing Christmas carols!

Julie,

Good article. You're lucky there are 12,000 Julie Brooks on Google. If someone accuses you of serial murder, you can always say, "That's not me--must be another Julie Brooks."

On the other hand, I'm stuck. Guess how many of me you can Google...

Nice work. I like that you give facts, not opinion. I suppose we don't know too much about this guy because most reporters are not into research. That's kind of scary.

In the CCTimes article, they mention his being sentenced to jail in 1997 for filing false tax returns. They have Nexis which I do not have access to. There actually isn't a heck of a lot else out there that I could find from the comfort of my desk.

Solon: with a name like yours, you have to be a good boy because you're so Googleable.

He bought the property in Harwichport from my family back in 2004. He paid cash. He kept delaying the closing but eventually it went thru. We have seen him a few times since then, he completely redid the interior, put in granite floors thruout, added a few new decks, redid the tennis courts, and hired a fulltime live in gardner. Now we heard all this how sad, but the place looks great. I hope he loses it all

Really--the wrong Jeannine? I stand corrected, then. Are you saying there is more than one Jeannine Windle, or that the Jeannine Windle I'm writing about is not Jeffrey's wife? Both could be possible; I just figured, what were the chances. I make no pretense that this is anything but armchair Googling and not even close to journalism. Please let me know where I'm wrong and I'll correct it.

I have spent time with the accused and said hello to Mrs. Windle. Everyone who has met her speaks very highly. A lovely lady and wonderful mother. All of us on the dock feel very badly for her and the children.

I was told that Jeannine Windle the caregiver for the developmentally disabled is in fact a different Jeannine from our Harwich Port Jeannine Windle. So I removed that reference. Sorry, other Jeannine--this case is heating up and you may want to think about changing your name.

Mav--in my investigating so far, I have heard a quite different impression of Jeannine than yours. Quite different.

maverick [Member] writes:
julie...the accused has come down to my boat on occasion. Especially when he smelled us grilling bluefin.

Asked if he could join us. And shared the evening.

I have only said hello to his bride. Other friends of mine on the dock have chatted with her and said she was very nice. That's all I know. Other than her dad is highly thought of in the neighborhood. Maybe because he owns most of it.

But I don't think Mr. Windles problems should reflect on anyone other than himself. I have a great deal of empathy for the entire family.

I say just ask any woman because you can't play dumb with another woman. Men readily believe that a woman "just had no idea" about whatever. Women know better.

Mav--I must dispel the myth that Jeannine's dad "owns half of Harwich", which is one of the many untrue rumors which circulated about the Windles, as people attempted to explain their wealth.

I have searched the Town of Harwich assessor's database under Jeannine's maiden name and come up with very little. I have heard from sources which say that her parents actually had financial trouble; hence, Jeffrey building out a compound in Florida with one house for Jeff & Jeannine and one for her parents.

In addition, owning "half of Harwich" doesn't mean you're rich, it just means you own a lot of property. I know people who are land-rich--they do not have lawn jockeys or angels on their front door.

a bit of info after living in Dennis, I see jeannine's friend "Fat Pat" has her name on the plaque also, how nice. The two of them make each look uglier. I guess they are both big so neither of them feel threatened about their looks

Julie...on further investigation eye witnesses have confirmed that her butt is larger than the "rack". Sorry.

The feds took the two trophy boats from Allen Harbor this week and brought them to J&J Marine as part of their claim for unpaid bills.

Sad story. Have been away on charters.

As for her Dad please do a little research. You might find it interesting.

jeannine comes from a very dysfunctional family background and her dad is no where near the cape and she is very sneaky and says things to see how much you really know about her kind of like a test of somekind. she belongs with a guy like jeff, they are both F....ed up in the head and the kids have no chance to be anything but the same. one day they will tell the parents where to go after being brought up in this environment I don't think for one minute she wasn't aware of everything all along as long as she could sit on her ass all day, shop without any limits and just be "Jeannine" and the dumb as hell wife
