Cape's Cashman to build two more wind farms
UPDATE: When we ran this story on March 3, 2006, we didn't know the location of the proposed wind farms, but now we do. A story in today's New Bedford Standard-Times reveals, "In a proposal that would dramatically change the appearance of Buzzards Bay, a Boston developer wants to build a $750 million offshore wind farm comprised of 90 to 120 turbines in the ecologically sensitive waterway... The proposed sites are about 3 to 4 miles off the coast of Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven, Barneys Joy in Dartmouth and Naushon Island, one of the Elizabeth Islands. An estimated 30 to 40 turbines would be erected at each of the three sites..." Here is our original story:
Builder to test waters with major offshore plan
Jay Cashman earlier announced his desire to build Cape Wind project
Constructor Jay Cashman (on right) is planning to invest at least $500 million in two wind-powered developments off the Massachusetts coast - the first of what could be a multi-billion dollar wind enterprise for his Quincy firm.
Jay Cashman, shown on right receiving the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service from the B.U. School of Management last summer, has a long history in New England: his great-grandfather’s firm erected Ptown's Pilgrim Monument
Jay Cashman, wh0 helps build everything from marine facilities to bridges to office towers, said yesterday he’s planning to soon file plans for two 30-turbine offshore wind projects that would generate a combined 200 megawatts of electricity - or enough power for 200,000 homes.
According to the Cashman web site, his construction company is well equipped to handle an innovation like America's first offshore wind farm on Nantucket Sound as well as two more. Mr. Cashman has homes in Falmouth and Chatham.
At this time he declined to disclose the locations of the two proposed projects, which likely will spark intense controversy among ocean-front property owners.
Cashman, who last September said he planned to get involved in the wind-energy business in a big way including handling the construction of the Cape Wind project, said he hoped to file detailed plans in January. But it took longer than he thought, he said.
Each 30-turbine project will produce about 100 megawatts. But one of the off-shore sites will have enough room for about 60 more turbines to produce another 200 megawatts, doubling the power generation if there’s an expansion, he said.
The initial build-out would cost about $500-$750 million, and any 200-megawatt expansion would cost about the same at today’s rates of roughly $2.5 million for each megawatt.
“I’m not going to take it out of my piggy bank,” joked Cashman, when asked how the project will be funded. Banks and other investors will be brought onboard, he said.
He indicated he’s also looking at land-based wind projects.
Cashman, who helped build a wind turbine at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay shown on right, said more wind power is needed to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign oil and to cut pollutants.
But Cashman warned that the fate of his projects rests with whether a separate wind farm proposal for Nantucket Sound, planned by Cape Wind Associates, is blocked by Congress. If however, his projects are in state rather than federal waters as believed, the regulatory process is vastly different.

And... What will my friends say in high places... Willing to offer at "sky is falling" price & terms... May consider lease just in case My fears are for naught. Call Ted @...'
Now thinking it is soon perhaps time for us to pack our bags & leave before the coming catastrophic malady befalls this... "Pristene National Treasure".
Before all you mention... Washes ashore! And all that is left... Oh my... it is too terrible to even think of it. :~(
Please define the word for me ok? :-)
How will he find sites when Gordon says there are no others that would work?
Maybe we need a debate featuring them to find out the truth.
And I hope Cliff is right in the middle to monitor the deception and double talk.
(Whatever you do... Don't tell Magical & Babs... They will freak out!)
I don't need a Court Jester. Just a few honest answers. They totally contradict each other.
Should I call the Clergy? He dissapeared in a hurry.
If Young is successful will you be right behind?
Although... I will tell you, you need not fear about radar interference as you will be unaffected. Good enough?
As far as why the # of his turbines do not come close to CW's...
Again all I can say is... For example Hull's turbine is 'load specific' and, in fact they are looking to add at least one or more offshore... Also- load specific.
I would surmize that Mr. Cashman's project is also matched to the load (& demand) he expects to serve in an economically viable way.
Are you suggesting that a "Court Jester" and being honest are contradictory?
Not concerned as far as Young is concerned. As said right from the start... The amendment will NOT pass muster.
Ultimatly, Young got in way over his head when he got in bed with Kennedy... Happens every time!
Glug... glug...gasp!
SP...Do I have to bring back the clergy to get an honest answer?
What is the draft of the barges to be used for construction?
How do you make the callous statement that I will not be affected by radar interference?
You contradict yourself. And you don't pass muster.
I hope the good citizens of Cape Cod will see the ultimate result of Cape Wind.
NO lower electric bill, destruction of Nantucket Sound and less tourists.
This will result in their taxes rising and a greater burdon on them to support their way of life.
You are a joke.
You want to speak of "barges"? I told you some time ago to look elsewhere for that info... remember?
Rest ASSured clergy is looking out for you... Praying for your salvation which will come in the form of you prostrating (note: leave your prostate out of this)yourself before a turbine (on the deck of your scow will suffice) and offering your pitiful self to the service of the windfarm gods.
Don't worry, be happy... You will NOT be affected by the interference. Go to sleep... go to sleep... close your eyes now... you are getting sleepy.
Mav... You must think you are posting to a bunch of idiots...
The good citizens of Cape Cod WILL see the ultimate result of Cape Wind...
A SUCCESS and happy to have such a wonderful and magnificent project in their back yards.
And you... As will Kennedy, Delahunt, Romney, Riley and the rest of those smucks... Look like the dumb, selfish, unevolved *ucks you are.
So carry on S. Peckham, like the supreme fool you’ve shown yourself to be.
Tell you what... When an intellegent debate or discussion surfaces... In regard to ACK Sound on this or any blog... I love the opportunity in a 'so called'... "respectful, adult-like manner" to discuss. If you have been watching there have been a number of these occassions.
In the meantime... reading so much of the BS... Clearly showing up on so many blogs... I have no choice but to join in in the insainity of it all... If for no other reason than for my own entertainment.
So sorry, if my "fool"ishness has offended or distracted you... but let's be real.
Much of what is posted here is not exactly realistic... Let alone adult-like.
Anyway, thanks for the kind offering of "I love you". The feeling might be mutual... supreme'r one!
BTW... I am not worried about CW's chances. It is a sure bet. That & GE... (hint)put your $ on it. (soon)
Just got me wondering though... Where are they going to pump it?
Mav... If I were you I would sound the alarm!... All hands on deck!
Anony... Think you missed Barbara & Magicals concept of 'new (sic) wave' housing @ the shoals...
I think there is MUCH potential that bears investigation and perhaps laying claim to as many plots as one can before the Feds catch on!
Of course, knowing those girls they have already hired architects and landscapers! Their certainly not ones to let an opportunity to "test the waters"... slip on by either.
Our Editors read every comment, and we will continue to delete the cheaters.
If Green Energy, Maverick or any others wish to advertise (like 84 other local businesses including Cape Wind do) click on the word "ADVERTISING" at the top of the front page and contact our sale department. The rates are dirt cheap, as little as $25 a month, that's 84¢ a day.
Maybe this announcement will make more people see the need for comprehensive ocean zoning and a clear permit review process.
Are you saying... If "Anyone who thinks(that's a good one all by itself) Jay or Jim is doing this out of concern for the enviornment is not playing with a full deck"? THEREFORE:
Or, is what you are saying... Seeing that "For-profit power production is certainly neither illegal nor evil..." So...
"let's not take these people seriously when they claim to be concerned enviornmentalists"...
Or, is what you are saying... That (ASSuming you have personal knowledge) Cashmans personal lifestyle is more energy consumptive that some small countries." THEREFORE:
Because Jay has a Boston address & a Chatham address (and Jim has a Boston address and a Yarmouth address)... presumptivly... "definitely not a chatham(cape)guy." THEREFORE:
Or, is it just the fact that you made "this announcement"...
That "will make more people see the need for comprehensive ocean zoning and a clear permit review process."?
Or, maybe, is it you are just a wee bit jealous? Of their... Integrity, Lives, Lifestyle? Or perhaps, it's just their: Credibility.
You are a joke, a bad joke. All you want to do is reduce every post, every discussion to school-yard taunting and pre-school imbecility. You succeed admirably. If half of the wind farm's supporters are of your ilk the wind farm is a dangerous and evil thing because you are a dolt, a small-minded little man just too precious for your own good. You wouldn't know reasoned debate if it bit you in the ass.
Not at the zoo... But, 'Baboon'... I mean 'Bufoon' comes to mind...
Will consider your thoughful input and regurgitate appropriatly in the AM.
Goodnight Irene.
Duly noted... There is so much posted that makes no credible sense at all... And yours are no exception.
I poke fun and make light of what I consider worthy targets. If you were not so self absorbed you would realize I also am serious & thoughtful as well.
The difference with your postings, as far as I am concerned is... You are by far the most angry and taunting...
And, by way of your phoney intellectualism and character assination that you... Are 'above' the fray with your "Great"(ness)...
I hate to disappoint you there 'Peter Pumpkin'... But, perhaps you should pay a little more attention to your Toga because you are exposing yourself...
It is obvious in YOUR response to my 3/04 post @ 12:28 that you can't handle the truth about yourself.
You just don't like it when your real motives and insecurities are revealed.
Get a grip there GG... Grab a mirror and do a little self examination.
At least we know Ted K will not mind - his view isn't marred by what the proles in Fairhaven or New Bedford may see.
The sight will surely attract more tourists to NB & Fairhaven than ever before.
What's red white & blue and flys over New Bedford?...
Super Mannie!
The flagship on Nantucket Sound has inspired the second in Buzzards Bay!
As the price of oil and natural gas generated electricity continues to climb because we have reached the world’s peak pumping rate, the zero fuel cost of wind looks better and better.
The most optimum site on Horseshoe Shoal was first. The second most optimum site in Buzzards Bay. The third most optimum site is.... (Mother Nature picks these, not politicians in 11th hour meetings based on valued contributors).
Welcome to the club Mr. Cashman!
Last year there was an article I read about how he had torn up conservation and his wife's pony was on the loose. Did he have to pay fines for his negligence or did Chatham just get a PAY OFF?
What a joke. And what of his company Modern Continental?
The guy may have a lot of money---but that's about all he's got. He and Gordon deserve each other.
So tell us more about Cashman's personal lifestyle and his energy--is it spent on chasing his wife's pony on Strong Island?
I couldn't believe that story when I read it---what an idiot, arrogant idiot. So he puts this electrical cable in the ocean for some rich guy who owns part of Strong Island (stupidly he sells back most of the island to the Town of Chatham who then deem it conservation) Cashman drives his SUV all over the island and when the pony gets loose, they have to call in the animal control officer to retrieve it.
Someone with that much money---why doesn't he own his own darn island?
I would love to have known what the outcome of that story was. It just seemed to die off in the local papers.
GG--you must know, what happened?
& Where have you been?
Sounds like you have a problem with someone owning a poney... Got loose on an island Cashman ran an electric line to... And maybe he buried the wire in a dune or whatever. Who give a rats butt?
And, if he "paid off" the town... Why not check into it and ask the officials what happened instead of trashing him pre-emptivly?
Then report back with your findings.
I sense a wee bit of... He's got / you don't... "Hair" in the air.
Think about... If you have no grounds to attack the 'concept'... Then attack the proponent.
Sounds familiar.
See you there!
We know how to 'speak'... The kings english!
Why do you twist what I say around to suit your own purpose? Did you comprehend what I wrote?
This guy Cashman, because of his wealth, power and arrogance felt he could just tear up Strong Island, destroy delicate vegetation, which takes years to replace, just so he could ride his SUV. He created roadways for his own amusement! And the unattended pony? How much did it cost the animal rescue squad to retrieve "pony on the loose"? That is a job paid by the residents of Chatham with tax dollars--no? Why should the town have to pay for his wife's stupidity?
I have a huge problem with the likes of Cashman and Gordon for obvious reasons that you obviously can't understand. Their only priority in life is to line their own pockets with obsessive greed without the slightest consideration for others or the enviornment which they plan to destroy.
My point is this: IF IT HAD BEEN ANYONE ELSE, THEY WOULD HAVE GOT RAKED OVER THE COALS--BUT BECAUSE IT WAS A PERSON OF INFLUENCE, HE JUST GOT A SLAP ON THE WRIST--is it clear now Peter?
"The relationship between the town and the island's occupants was further tested by Cashman's arrival last year. In the past two summers, the town's Conservation Commission has cited Cashman, whose family has stayed at Horst's house, for several environmental violations, including cutting paths through the property without permission. The health inspector also cited the family for allowing its Shetland pony to run loose.
Some Chatham residents privately worry about Cashman's long-term plans for the triangular island, which dominates Pleasant Bay. But they are wary of exacerbating the dispute over Strong Island.
''I think it's a battleground for all of the problems of people who are trying to preserve land," said George Cooper, president of Friends of Pleasant Bay. ''Developers would like to develop it and exploit it as much as they can. Those of us who would like to keep it in its natural state are on the other side. It's a pretty wide gulf."
Horst's lawsuit argues that the Chatham Conservation Foundation violated the 1974 deal by failing to pay for a new underwater cable that delivers electricity, telephone service, and cable television to his house.
He eventually made contact with the Horsts and negotiated a private deal that neither he nor they will discuss. But Cashman and his family have spent much of the past two summers on the island. Last year, he bought his own amphibious vehicle, a 1965 ''Amphicar" that drives on the road and motors through the water".

Like I said... Seems more like a case of "He's got..."
Crusader... On the otherhand - What's his/her problem?
I don't have the problem, seems you & the rest of you "Capie's with attitude" have the problem.
Like Cashman, Gordon & other's you are mere "Legends in your own minds".
As far as making cracks about Gosnold-- people suffering from mental illness is nothing to joke about. You should be ashamed of yourselves for making fun of folks who need help in this area. Take it from someone who worked in healthcare for many years---"people who live in glass houses......"
Sounds like you two need some humbling.
I'm renovating, renting & cashing in--finally I'm getting my money's worth out of this Cape Cod misadventure.
Cape Cod is only good for investment property---but unlike Cashman, I'm just making my mortgage payments, not trying to exploit this beautiful place.
Sounds like maybe you two have a vested interest in Cashman & Gordon.......
You make it hard for objective minds to remain dedicated readers & I am not happy with how you've managed to drive people off these blog sites with your narrow mindedness & hatred for those with alternative views.
Gosnold... Who's making fun of anyone there??? Are you a resident?
Yeah, I eat a lot of that (humble)pie... There's a place that Stilgar knows that has some of the best!
Still say you sound like the jealous type who can't stand those that have been very successful due to their own hard work... And so what if they rattle a few cages at times... Don't you? Are you Mr./Ms. Clean?
So good luck on "cashing in"... Doesn't sound any different than what Cashman is doing, does it? Look it up: "exploit"
If you followed the blogs you would note I have no "vested" interest in either project or individuals other than to admire Jim Gordon for his courage to stick with his vision...
And, I wish Mr. Cashman my personal best & success in his endevor as well.
I truly believe most all wind projects can only enhance our lives in a multitude of ways.
To my knowledge the only ones having left were those who had no choice because they seemingly risked not only themselfs to potential litigation but CCT as well.
If having a focus on the potential of wind and a disgust and hatred of those who use outright lies, misinformation, red herrings & politics as a mean to oppose the project(s)... I am gulity. as charged.
I do respect those that can say they have a issue with the "view" or 'real' envoirnmental impacts... Ok, let's discuss it. Or the very least let it run it's course thru the agencies currently reviewing it...
Let them decide if the benefits outweigh the offsets.
Not some politician with his hand in a deep pocket.
Sorry to have upset you.
Alas, the poor wench doesn't know when to "cut bait" and shut up.
Senaca... Is that "Capies with attitude" or "narrow mindedness & hatred of those with 'alternative' views"... Of which you write/refer?
