Player required to get hepatitis shot

Sports officials at Wixon Middle School in Dennis plan to conduct sportsmanship workshops following an incident in which one or more members of the girls soccer team filled a fellow teammate's water bottle with toilet water.

A Hyannis radio station, WXTK-FM, reported that the student had to receive a hepatitis shot in the wake of the incident.

In an Oct. 2 letter to parents of members of the girls soccer team, athletic coordinator Stu Fyfe wrote, "As you may or may not be aware; there was a recent event involving some of the players that compromised our team's ability to work as a team."

Fyfe's letter didn't provide details of the incident.

On Friday morning, Carol Woodbury, superintendent of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District, said she only knew of one student who perpetrated the incident.

"There was only one student who filled the water bottle," Woodbury said.

The superintendent declined to discuss what if any disciplinary action was taken, citing student privacy. She said no action was taken against Fyfe or the team's coaches in the wake of the incident.

Woodbury said the school district didn't get in touch with the police about the incident.

"This was handled like any other incident," she said. "There's a protocol we follow. Once we find out what the facts are, disciplinary actions can be taken against individuals, and that sometimes involves the police. I don't believe this particular incident needed it."

In the Oct. 2 letter, Fyfe wrote: "The coaches and I, together with school administration, have worked with the individuals involved and their parents to address the incident.

"We believe now it is our responsibility to work with all the players to develop skills to be able to move on from this unfortunate event and finish out the season successfully," he wrote.

For the remainder of the soccer season, Fyfe wrote, he and the coaches will conduct classroom workshops on sportsmanship, team building and leadership

"You may also notice an increase in my presence at practices and games, as well," Fyfe wrote. "I am there to support the coaches, the team, and help reinforce the team building concepts covered in the classes.... Thank you for your continued support of the team."

"Sometimes students do things that are unacceptable," Woodbury said Friday. "This is an ongoing thing with children. You're always teaching them how to treat other people."

Classes on sportsmanship???? How about common decency? The offenders should be kicked from the team if they've not yet learned common decency.

They are still on the team??They only got in-school suspension most likely together. How bass-ackwards is that. What are they thinking "huh we got off easy". I am so glad my kids don't go there and know they will never go to that school or any DY schools( got to love school choice). I am ashamed to say I live in Dennis after this.

This is outrageous! This person who did this could have made the victim very sick! This person who did this is a future criminal unless they are dealt serious consequences NOW.

Why didn't the principal say what the punishment was? Her salary is paid by MY TAX DOLLARS and I want to know what she is doing about this--she has NO RIGHT or REASON to hide the truth.

Unless the truth is, she let this kid off with a slap on the wrist.

What's wrong with toilet water?

My cat "Mittens" drinks it all the time. Prefers it over her water bowl and the pristine river next to my home.

I just want to say as a mother of a daughter at Wixon, this is just a sad story to hear. I heard the story and wondered why nothing has been sent home and was it another thing for DY School District to push under the papers. Hopeing it would not get out! And rumor is one of the girls mothers is in PTAC!! Where have the morals of our children gone? They are losing all basic qualties fast. There is no respect and manners are gone. Mean Girls are in. It is sad to say we need to teach are daughters so young how to protect them selves from there own peers.

To Capemom,
Yes they did just get a slap on the wrist. I was listening to WXTK the other morning when it came out. They read the whole letter.
To Cape5mom,
I live in Dennis and will never let my now 13 & 12 year old kids go to Wixon. Their parents have taught them it is ok to bully and are most likely passed out by the time they get home from practice and games.

Not surprisingly, a story like this seems to inspire immature jokes and righteous indignation. I certainly can appreciate the latter; it is easy to be disgusted by such a situation. I heard some of the chatter about this story on the radio the other day. It’s easy to criticize the school district, but they have legal obligations to confidentiality for all the individuals involved, especially the victim- do you think she wants this story to be all over the news? They also still have an obligation to the perpetrator(s), who I agree should be disciplined. This is an extreme case, but mean behavior is not uncommon for adolescents, who are immature and in some cases misguided.

Imagine if the girls that did this were brought to the auditorium in front of the entire school and made to drink a glass of toilet water? Never going to happen, but it would never happen again!

Sounds like a tempest in a teapot. Toilet water used to mean a kind of lady's perfume. Don't people know that sometimes kids do dumb things? They are ignorant. This is why they need school.

To my3: Is WXTK reliable? Usually they get just about everything wrong.

If you think toilet water episode is bad, how about this: a student at the Wixon assaulted a teacher during the week before memorial day of 2008.... school officials refused to call the police. So, the teacher/victim called the Dennis police and now the case is winding its way through the juvenile court system. I have confirmed that this incident happened with the authorities. And, that teacher had to face this violent criminal for the rest of the year and presumably this year as well.

If the D-Y district follows the rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association there should be some very severe consequences for the idiot who risked serious disease in her team mate.

Someone should ask Superintendent Woodbury about that. Welcome to Woodbury, RFD where the schools know better than anyone else. After all....we have several very expensive deans who decide these matters.
