Bill Delahunt; modern mugwump

In 1884 the derisive appellation "Mugwump" entered the American political lexicon. It has endured all these years, symbolizing those who appear to be on both sides of an issue, popularly defined as a politician whose mug is on one side of the fence and his wump is on the other.

Rep. Delahunt, from day one an opponent of the wind farm, has noticed Massachusetts voters want Cape Wind’s project built by a stunning 7 to 1 majority. Worried that so many disagree with his Neolithic mindset, he has undertaken a big PR campaign to sound as though he is pro-wind, even as he continues to fight to kill this much studied, much needed proposal.

His plan, which lacks structure or detail, advocates multi-layered political opportunities to prevent progress. He touts it as having essential local input. Does he consider the potential of Alaskan and Hawaiian legislators forcing Cape Codders to pay ever-increasing electric bills to be a demonstration of local control?

We wanted governmental transparency, but we are being served up a transparent political maneuver. It is insulting that the congressman thinks we can’t see through his subterfuge.

I don't mean to "threadjack", but Delahunt seems to have a pattern of doing things that are not good for us regular folks. Look at this email I just received from moveon.org re: his non-vote on net neutrality yesterday. Save the internet and call Delahunt. Use the contacts below to call him re: the wind farm too.
here it is:
Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday, Net Neutrality advocates stunned the political world by winning a vote overwhelmingly in a House committee. You were a big part of that win.

Unfortunately, your representative, William Delahunt, was not at all a part of it. The free and open Internet was under seige, and your representative in Congress boldly...abstained. While other members of Congress took a stand, He was the only person to vote "present."

Can you call Rep. Delahunt today to demand he publicly support Net Neutrality?

I loved and will use often your definition of "mugwump" I knew there was a word out there for fence sitter. Your web citation also fills in the historical spaces.

When you talk to a staffer, you can mention that you expect Rep. Delahunt to vote for the bipartisan Sensenbrenner/Conyers "Internet Freedom and Nondiscrimination Act" when it comes to the House floor.

To maximize impact, please call your representative's Washington, D.C. and local office.
