The rotary in question sucks...it was money wasted. "if it aint broke don't fix it" it was fine the way it was. Get some of these rich people with 3, 4, and 5 cars off of the island and things would be fine. Do something with the traffic downtown and the parking, that is where the money should have been put. Or something for the teenagers of Nantucket to do.. Blog Away.. :)

I vacationed on Nantucket for about 6 straight years from around 1987 to 1993. Always the first week of August. I dont see how you cant stay in shape there. Biking out to Sconset and Sankaty is awesome. The running paths from town out towards Madaket and Jetties beaches are the best. I havent been there for 14 years but Nantucket is always on my mind...great place.

Boy, I miss having a fireplace. Although I don't miss the cutting, stacking and carrying of dirty logs and the hunt for kindling. Or the occasional lighting screw-up that results in the house filling with smoke. I sure would like a nice clean gas fireplace, though!

This guy Jamie Ranney is known for talking out of both sides of his mouth. He's a fast-lipped, bad breath lawyer by trade, and his family has dominant yet quietly unpopular control of Nantucket's Town Government. His sister is Town Administrator, his realstate scamming father runs Nantucket's share of the Steamship Authority, and his brother in law heads the local police. Can you say political incest?

codder,
This is a wonderful piece and I dream of living on Nantucket. . .
Sounds like you've had an excellent result from a very invasive surgical procedure! Your rehab is going great!
Most backs @ 8th post-op week are not fairing as well. . . No doubt you're in excellent shape.
Kudos to you!

Best part about Nantucket for either riding or walking is that there are no hills to speak of. Lots and lots of ticks, though.

Jamie,
Great post and I love the photos. Nantucket sounds wonderful & I hope your right when you say that there will always be open places there.
The State of Mass is quickly losing it's pristine locations to development & it's important to fight for every inch of undeveloped land to ensure that it will be there for future generations to enjoy.
Being an athlete will surely help you with your rehab. I am also recovering from recent shoulder surgery and although it was not as serious as your operation I still have a bit of therapy to go through before I'm fully recovered & I always advocate that fresh air & the great outdoors is always good for the mind, body & soul.
I wish you a speedy recovery from your surgery & best of luck with your rehab.

Imco35...you state "These folks in the commercial/recreational fishing business are going to have to take ownership for the fix we are in."
We are trying despite having to wrestle the government gorilla known as NMFS. Longlining and pair trawling have caused the most harm to the worlds stocks. As we speak herring trawlers are committing an ocean rape off the East Coast. Please visit http://www.choircoalition.org/. The public comment period on herring seining will last two more weeks. Your comments will have more weight with the government than the lobby money of the seiners.
Furthermore, many of the overfished stocks are migratory. Many of the bluefin tuna that visit New England in the summer attemt to spawn in the Mediterranean in the winter only to be met by a massive seine fleet that has decimated that species. The European Union countries have overfished for years and made a joke of any ICCAT quotas. The U.S. has been a leader in the conservation and management of migratory species. And a huge majority of the commercial and recreational fishery has supported this effort.

When are all you insular New Englanders going to realize that people from Ohio, Greece, North Dakota, Botswana, or almost anyplace else in the USA or the world don't know your rules about rotaries!
They don't have rotaries and they never will. They didn't know your rules about rotaries 50 years ago and they won't know them 100 years from now.
The stubburnness and inhospitability of local people clinging to this artifict makes me livid.
Wishing other people are going to somehow learn your arcane rules because you stubbornly cling to them will not make it so.
It's like 1% of the population speaking a language no one else understands and believing that the other 99% will someday bother to learn it.
Rotaries work in merrie olde England, but not in the USA. People are confused by them. Grand rotaries were recently installed in Florida, and many were taken down because guess what--people were confused by them and it made traffic worse.
Rotaries are like typewriters and record players--obsolete.

The controversy is due to folks like Walter Cronkite, Ted Kennedy, Romney, Rielly, Delahunt, Ted Stevens, Don Young, and others to oppose a clearly beneficial project.
Most if not all of the above would have proudly stated their support for wind power 5 years ago, but now that it affects areas where most have a real estate or political interest, it all of a sudden is a no-no.
The folks who run this country have done such a fine job with our energy independence and our environment.
I'm sure they can handle the following:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/11/02/seafood.crisis.ap/index.html
"For more than 1 billion people, many of whom are poor, fish is their main source of protein, he said."
So let's keep over fishing, keep driving SUVs, taking the 40knot trip to Nantucket, and let a billion people starve in 2050.

Ok. Let's haul a bunch of fat,lazy,ignorant,A.D.D. americans to/from Nantucket at 40 knots but not try and address the issue of energy independance, and the environment.
Let's let the rich and famous have their neck of the woods ontouched but spout about the need for renewable projects anywhere else.

CNN reporting "Seafood gone by 2050?"
So how does fishing relate to the wind farms?
The opponents & some politicians use fishermen/heritage trade/recreational fishing industry/marina operators as examples of industries which would be adversely affected by the wind farm.
These folks in the commercial/recreational fishing business are going to have to take ownership for the fix we are in.

Jamie - Dude, are you smoking crack?
Two things, first why do you need to go 40 knots on a steamship authority fast ferry just to get to/from the island faster? What about the cost in terms of extra fuel?
Second: How/where would you slalom though wind towers? Do the ferries go over the shoal now?
Is this all about economics? Are you more concerned about your electricity bill going down than you are about the possibility to head in a positive direction?
About the blowhards against the wind farm who are talking about the 1 billion dollar fishing industry (Barbara Durkin EGAN/EMC) do you know that a Journal of Science report just came out saying that many species will be extinct by 2050?
Without fish, what are the birds going to eat?

@Jamie
quoting above...
"I told someone awhile ago, and I still feel this way, that if someone could guarantee that my considerable monthly electric bill would be cut in half if the wind farm was built and put online, then I would gladly consider slaloming on a Steamship Authority fast ferry whilst clogging the engine intakes with the carcasses of the thousands of sea birds killed by the deadly turbine blades."
So in other words youd allow a project to kill thousands of sea birds if only you can save 50-60 dollars a month on your phone Bill. So thats what a dead bird is worth... funny how we will allow such enourmous impacts for a little bit of money... but not allow minimal impacts for a small amount of money...
heavan forbid we do anything just because its the right thing to do
