Wow, thanks for the info. Burning Spear is fantastic - "the man from up in the hills, African teacher, Winston Rodney." Live in Paris is a must-have album for reggae fans.
I hope they'll do something further down Cape when the weather is hot, hot, hot.

Aw, c'mon, Sam, what about the accusation by those who don't believe in the human impact on global warming, who argue that scientists will say anything to get rich off of those lucrative government grants? ;-)
Seriously, science can be very cool and it's great to see more women involved.

I have been to Hawaii (Oahu and Big Island), Florida, California and Jamaica. Best beaches and best vacation spot is still Nantucket for me. My favorite beach of all time is still Craigville...I can plant my chair at 9am and stay til 5pm every day there. Yes I agree...THE CAPE RULES!

While I envy your tropical vacation (anyplace warm would be welcome now), it's true that you don't always appreciate what you've got till you're someplace else. Give me the National Seashore over commercialized, high-rise surrounded Florida beaches, or even Rhode Island beaches, any day.

What makes you think that she was a librarian? Most often the person behind the front desk is support staff, often poorly paid and in the direct line of fire from the public. It's unfortunate that you encountered her bad day.

Generally, these rolling track library ladders come in wood. They tend to have a broad bottom step for safety. They can be custom made as per your requirements. Tracks can be ordered in variety of styles and colors, as can the wheels. One can select from a number of wood types or metals such as steel, fiberglass or aluminum.Whatever the ladder chosen for the library, it should not disturb the library atmosphere and should be noiseless and easy to maneuver. Library ladders could be ordered from manufacturers of rolling track ladders, hardware stores, building suppliers or on the Internet.

I never followed politics until I had children. Before that I was more of a anarchist voting for guys like Perot and Anderson. Now that I have kids I vote straight Republican as I feel safer putting them to bed with guys like Bush and Cheney in charge. Obama will be like Deval and not deliver on anything. However I am sure he will do OK as long as he can keep his pants on which the last Moonbat in the White House couldnt do (Clinton).

Hi Sam,
Great blog. You have come a long way since you first left for Endicott. You will, in coming years, with many different experiences, develop your philosophies even further.
One thing that I would hope you and others will take into consideration when it comes to the election on Nov 4th is how you want our U.S. Supreme Court to be staffed in the future. In the next 4 years there will possibly be 2 or maybe 3 justices retiring.
Taxes, war, immigration etc., in my opinion, take a back seat to the appointment of justices. We need justices that base there decisions on the Constitution of the United States.
Before the election, please take the time to do more research on this subject. Obama and McCain have diverse opinions on appointments to the Court.
Keep up the open mind.

Well thought article..Sam
When I was in college, we drove to DC and participated in the anti- war rallies in 71..a long time ago..
We sat, smoked pot, dropped acid, and listened to all our fave bands on the Washington Monument criticizing Nixon.
My folks were staunch Repubs as well and couldn't understand my frustration with the status quo.
Now, after 3 kids and a mortgage 40 some years later, I am still frustrated with the political process more than ever and have lost faith, not in the system, but with the 2 parties who present their stars with whom neither I agree..nor have any faith in their values nor promises..
I firmly beleive that politicians have completely abandoned America and are out only for self interest.
And they speak what they think we want to hear to get elected..
But never deliver once elected!
Perhaps I am a cynic..whatever.it's my perception only..
unfortunately shared by everyone I know from both sides!
We've had it!
Perhaps this generation will start to turn it around..
Keep your optimism and hold to what you beleive..

Great article Sam. I went through a similar experience when I was in college. My ideology has changed considerably since then. What really bothers me however, are the stories of young voters that are easily influenced by partisan groups. Voting is a privilege, take the time to understand the process, explore the issues an then decide. It's "your" vote, not ACORNs, not Hollywoods, not MTV's.

I enjoyed the clarity and balance in this article. When you write "Why must we be "against" the candidite with whom we don't entirely agree?',it strikes me that you've hit upon the core problem with politics in America, where discourse is seen more as a battle than a discussion. I've taken note that Obama hasat least attemped to keep it more as a discussion, but like you, I am still stuck in the middle, that purple zone you so aptly describe.

A Marine from here in Arizona, having served 5 tours of duty. Unable to cope with civilian life re-enlisted to serve the additional two tours of duty. Finally came home to stay. His family life was completely shattered. Suffered from Post Traumatic syndrome. Drove up to the Grand Canyon. Turned away, raced out until he hit a tree. The police were on his tail. Our Marine put a bullet into his brother's head sitting next to him. got out and waved a gun at the Police and they shot him.
He should not have been allowed to return home. $200,000 dollars or more, that G. bush requires to build a library, should instead be used to build a country club resort for returning Veterans to find peace in themselves. A plane right from the killing fields to civilian living life is far to little time needed to regain control of their lives. So many suicides coming out of Iraq and Afganistan, also desertion. Our military are not expendable.

Some one tell Senator Ted Kennedy to hang in their ! He has to watch the Chicago Cubs win the World series!
It just may happen this year !
Having worked at our local hospital in CASA GRANDE, ARIZONA, I was able to meet with so many brave wonderful people. Also tell him some guy who had stayed in Hyannisport in 1950, who immigrated from Brooklyn, N.Y.to Arizona noted that he cares.
My view is I am not in favor of this bail out. We have to be very cautious. The Wall Street insecurity might warrant China to call in their notes to be paid. That appears to be the most crucial financial worry. Let AIG call on other countries to carry their load. We can't live on Plastic credit any more. AIG made plenty of money from their interest received. It is pay back time to the America People.
I, in my own way has always looked up to Senator Ted Kennedy, and the Kennedy family.
Caroline's book,"Patriots handbook to motivate High School students to read out loud about famous people. A great text book. My thoughts are with Senator Kennedy in my support.

Bad news sells newspapers (and makes people tune in to the news.

A university study in the 70's proved that good news just does'nt sell. Bad news does.
I think it's very important that people in general realize this as association is very influential and if someone reads enough bad news without the proper insight they will undoubtedly
develop depression.
If the amount of despair (even to the point of suicide) that the public has acquired over the years because of this policy could be measured, it would be enourmous.
Should we blame? Of course not because some things will always have a pattern. Speeders will always speed and people who visit bars or nightclubs will always get behind the wheel to go home.
EDUCATION is the answer. I think people should always be taught never to take things at face value. Try giving that to Rupert Murdoch.

Unfortunately good news doesn't sell newspapers - or the ads wrapped around the good news which pays the bills.
We distributed a cheerful new newspaper a few years ago called The Cape Cod Optimist.
It was full of good news, all upbeat, all positive.
But nobody picked it up to read even though it was FREE !
It's simply human nature, Sam, and as Charlotte Bronte said, "It is in vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility: they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it."

My husband and I lived in an apartment in B.Bay from 1999-2001. We lived beneath the apartment of a very busy drug dealer. I used to keep my blinds shut all the time because all sorts of scary people would look in our apartment as they were going up the stairs to buy drugs. I remember getting glared at by a really creepy girl as she was ascending the stairs. Finally one night we heard a huge BOOM! and the living room actually shook. It was ATF kicking in their door. The agents had observed a guy go in to buy drugs and decided then to make their move. When they busted him along with the dealers, they found that the guy had no money on him. He had a big knife tucked into the back of his pants. They also pulled a loaded revolver out of the apartment. The ATF agent said that it looked like the guy was going up to rob them. I'm glad they got busted before that went down. I was about 7 months pregnant with our first child when they were busted- really scary people up there. We told the agent Thank You.

Ms. Pearsall, Don't know if you had a chance this morning to watch the US Women play Brazil for the gold medal. (US -1, Brazil - 0, ET) If you did, I wonder if you have any thoughts? From my view point it was a great classic women's game, not a lot of fouls, few cards, but a lot of play and great defense, more so in the last 18 minutes of the game when they were in extra time. The US had to defend 13 corners during the game many of them came during extra time, after the US scored its winning goal. Not an easy feat when what many say arguably,is the best women's player in the world (Marta) is taking them.
This win gives the US three Olympic Gold Medals in this sport, two in a row. Helps offset the US Softball's teams' stunning loss to Japan earlier in the Gold Medal Game.
This win will give a good bump to the resuming of the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) League next spring (April - August) and our own Boston Breakers playing at Harvard.

First of all the customer asking Nantucket questions was probably more interested in you than Nantucket. I live up here in Worchester and every day people ask me about places in Dennis, Yarmouth and Falmouth. Being from Barnstable I never really spent any time in these other towns with the exception of defunct bars like Rascals, Brothers Four and the Compass Lounge. They cant understand why I dont know the entire Cape and Islands. Nantucket is the greatest place in the World for a Summer vacation. The girl I went with back in the 90s loved the island and we would go there the first week of August every year for like 5 years. We rented bikes for the week and went to Madaket, Sconset, Surfside, Jetties etc. The island is truly magic and with the high prices it keeps out the rift raft....kind of like Starbucks! I havent been back there since we went seperate ways back in like 1993 but I think about it all the time. As for customer service I used to work at what is now Tedeschis in Centerville. I didnt mind helping tourists but as a Finance major I knew they were the Capes lifeblood.

Does anyone know what became of the RR right-of-way on the upper Cape? I'm wondering about a particular spot, but I can't recall any road names, so this won't be easy. There was a place in North Truro in the 1950's where a retired fisherman named Francis and his wife kept a duplex (now gone). They rented half of it out to city folks like us during the summer. It was a short walk down an oiled dirt road to the tracks, then a stome's throuw to the bay; there was a spur there where cars often switched.
Hard by the spur was a fish processing plant, connected by a cable-suspended hopper to a tower built well out on the mudflats. I never saw how the fish got loaded into the hopper, but I often watched the hopper come in and dump its load into the plant, where the fish were processed for (I think) pet food. The mud flats were very flat there, and at low tide you could walk out what seemed like miles to my young feet. Maybe it's still like that.

Ms. Pearsall, As to a lower age for players to 16, I can attest from experience that is a little young to play with players that are in the majority over 20. If I was a HS or club soccer coach I would be very weary of having any of my players playing in an adult league, due to risk of injury.
The EMWSL's Div. 1 min age is 17, Div. 2 and Div. 3 is 19 (with no more than 3, 17-18 players on a D2 or D3 team. Age is prior to first game played.
As for male players not needed as their are plenty of opportunities for men to play. Co-ed league is an option but I would not advise it at all. It will take the fun and competitiveness out of the game. Its OK for recreation level.

Well since I've got such an audience and you are all so invested in this whole soccer bit I thought you might actually want to play next season. So I think I might do a little free advertising/PR for the league here. We're hoping to get 2 more teams for next year (DY and Sandwich) and hopefully also get a waiver allowing 16 year olds too! So stay tuned... and I will try my darnedest to present only the FACTS when advertising. It's kind of like blogging 100% objectively and being an honest politician... ya know, they all go hand in hand.
