Nice slideshow!! I also like the techno accompaniment.

I've shot a pumpkin before, with one of the Colonel's guns.

Well... maybe shot AT a pumpkin is a better way to describe it. It wasn't that far away either. I'm good at Other Things.

The Bar-B-Q is the only place in the house where the Colonel cooks.... and by "cook," I mean "Stacey buys/prepares/marinates the meat, creates the side dishes, brings the steaks out to the Colonel, and tells him when to take it off the grill before he poisons us. By "cook," I refer to the Colonel lighting the grill and laying the steaks down.

My grill is still kicking, too! I installed a bracket that holds a swivel lamp, so not even darkness can thwart this backyard chef.
The Coney island recipe sounds great!
I went yesterday for an LP refill at Stop & Shop on Station Ave. I paid, then waited about 8 minutes before running back in to ask them to page assistance yet again.
After waiting a total of 15 minutes in front of the store I grabbed my cell phone and called the manager. I was then finally attended to.
Avid grillers may want to avoid this store for LP refills.

My favorite was the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox as I am a resident of Dennis and could always make it their games. Next year I hope to get out to more games and see more of the league.

We've been following the Brewster Whitecaps for years -- this year my son took part in their youth clinic. They were great with the kids. It is a shame they wrap it up so early in August. Couldn't they stay one more week?

The best part was when they showed the "beautiful beach"!! The seaweed and crap was all over the beach. That was some funny stuff. Typical town of Dennis. Thank god for the low tax rate...look at all the s^$t you can wade through before you get to the water!! hahahahahahahaha!!!!

Great piece, also what a wonderful tip for an inexpensive vacation treasure search, whether you have kids or are single on a budget. Make some good planning around each of these finds and you could almost take the whole week without having to spend a bundle see the sights.. Love it

Hey CC Rockhopper I am a long time loyal Red Sox fan and while I love that creamy milky concoction, I sometimes like to try something different. I love varies chowders. But loyalty to my home team, however is unwavering.Yeah Red Soxs.
And Andyg63...you're right about using that clam juice otherwise its a bread ball.

I agree with many who state that clam cakes can be lacking in flavor.
My first job at a drive in theatre, many, many decades ago was making clam cakes. Over the years, after much trial and error, I have found the key to be a rich liquid to mix the batter. That is the key to flavor and I have found steaming some quahogs, reserving the resultant liquid is great to flavor the cakes, then I grind up the "hogs" and add them to the mix. I have not had many complaints over the years !!! Use a clam based liquid to your mix or recipe rather than water, that is the key to flavorful clam cakes.

Andyg63....Thanks for your variation..it sound good to me. And to those of you who shutter at the thought of a tomato based chowder, its not bad but its something that I have grown up with. And while I like the milk based chowder I occasionally like the tomato based. Its good and you should all try it when you get the chance. I also tried a Carribean Clam Chowder at Davey's Locker in New Bedford that was extremely good and different. It was made with sweet potatoes, corn, clams and laced with nutmeg and thyme. It's is different from our New England style but very good. Always got to be open to try new things then decide if you like it or not. Happy chowdering.

Hey Excalibur and Dingbat...while the captain isn't bursting with clam bites, it is flavorful. A trait I have yet to find in some of the other stops. Seafood Sam made an attempt at some clam cakes and while that had small bites of clam they lack the flavor goodness and just amounted to bread balls with clams. I have also tried Kate's which has a similar establishment in Orleans Liam's at Nauset Beach. These too are bigger with clams but lack the flavor. Salty's in Yarmouth has some which are good but tend to be alittle too greasy at times. Try Bob's sub and cone, they are bigger and have good noticeable clam bits and are bursting with good clam flavor.

Excalibur - I agree about the clam cakes. I believe they have a pet clam on a string and they drop him into each fresh batch of batter and quickly retrieve him.

I guess I'm missing something, but I've never found any evidence of a clam in Captain Frosty's clam cakes. Until now, I'd assumed they were some kind of Hush Puppy and I eat them only because they're not bad and they come free with their excellent chowder.

About This Blog

nancy_laverdiere_153A nurse of thirty-something years, I have transported myself to this somewhat quiet "island" for a peaceful existence more in tuned with people and nature.  I will share my views and experiences of living as a Cape Cod Washashore.
This blog will follow the journey of doing what Cape Codders do to survive - the trade off for a higher cost of living once that bridge is crossed. All to find our peace on picturesque beaches, inhaling fresh salty air, enjoying nature and finding art around us and in ourselves. I will share my views on all that the island has to offer.
