Plans underway for Mighty Meehan 5K run/walk cancer research fundraiser

T

he first annual Mighty Meehan 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Turlough Meehan Research Foundation will be held on Sunday Sept. 14 at 10 a.m., starting and ending at West Dennis Beach.

The foundation is a non-profit organization founded in conjunction with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund in memory of Turlough (pronounced "Tur-lock") Meehan, who was born a year ago Monday and diagnosed five weeks later with a rare form of cancer, infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (infant ALL).  The baby died on Dec. 18 after undergoing five months of intensive treatment at Children's Hospital in Boston.

"The mission of this foundation is to support new research to find a cure for this horrible disease," Turlough's parents, Phelin Meehan and Amanda-Clare Cunningham, write in a letter accompanying the registration form for the race. Donations to the foundation "will enable the doctors and scientists at Dana-Farber to focus their efforts in the lab finding a cure for this disease rather than spending their valuable time raising money to fund their research. It is our goal to raise $100,000 or more over the next five years to help find a cure for this disease."

The registration fee for the 5K run/walk is $18 per person, $50 per family; $20 per person on the day of the race, $55 per family. Registration forms are available at this link.

To give a donation, please make the check payable to the Turlough Meehan Research Foundation, P.O. Box 638, Hyannisport 02647.

For more information, contact Dan O'Connell at dpoconnell@comcast.net.

First of three triathlons to be held in Centerville

Registrations are still being accepted for the Hyannis Sprint 1 Triathlon, a combination quarter-mile swim, 10-mile cycling competition and 3.5-mile road race scheduled for Saturday June 14.

The event is a bit of a misnomer because none of its three components will actually take place in Hyannis. The swimming competition is at Craigville Beach in Centerville, the cycling course is a 10-mile loop to Osterville and back, and the road race stays within Centerville.

The June 14 mid-Cape triathlon will be followed by another in Falmouth on July 20 and the third of the summer on the Cape returning to Craigville Beach on Sept. 6. All three are part of the New England Triathlon Tour.

The competition starts early, at 7 a.m, and its field will be limited to 850 participants. "In our attempt for an on-time start, those not registered by 6:45 a.m. on race morning may be turned away!", warns the event website. "No dogs allowed on site!!!"

Those planning to compete in the triathlon can register at Craigville Beach on Friday June 13 from 5-7 p.m. or the next morning on the day of the competition from 5:15 to 6:45 a.m. Entry fees cost $50 for those age 17 and younger, $65 for 18 and older and $90 for relay teams.

The three triathlons are being coordinated by Time Out! Productions of Plymouth. For more info, contact Time Out's Rich Havens at 508-224-3601 or info@timeoutproductions.com.

Entry deadline approaches for Falmouth Road Race

Less than 10 days to go to register for Cape Cod's premiere annual running event, the 7.1-mile Falmouth Road Race (OK, the "CIGNA Falmouth Road Race"), scheduled for an almost certain sweltering Sunday Aug. 10 at 10 a.m.

"Race applications must be mailed and received in the race post office box by May 15," according to the race website.  A list of runners whose entries are accepted will be posted at the site by June 20. Instructions on picking up numbers will follow via email by July 20; runners will receive their numbers at race headquarters, the Gus Canty Recreation Center on Main Street in Falmouth, in the last few days before the race.

This year's entry form can be filled out on your computer if you have Adobe 8.0 or higher.

CIGNA Group Insurance is returning as lead sponsor, with its financial support the basis for including the company in the title of the race.

Race officials are advising runners of a "maximum finishing time" of 84 minutes. "Because of extreme traffic congestion in Falmouth on race day, we must reopen the roads to vehicular traffic as soon as possible," the race website states. "If you cannot complete the race at 12 minutes per mile pace (84 minutes), we ask that you not enter. The roads along the route will be opened after the 12-minute-milers have passed and the race will be officially over at 11:45 a.m."
