"We can't think of a better way to welcome spring than with a collection of outstanding work from the National Watercolor Society and two of our fine local artists," says Robert Nash, Executive Director of the Cultural Center. "We've been fortunate to host shows by several national and regional organizations, such as the New England Sculpture Association and the American Society of Marine Artists, and we're now looking forward to this major exhibit and to several others coming up this year, including a national exhibit juried by the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod in June, a show by the MA Cultural Council Artist Fellows in July, the Annual Exhibit of 21 in Truro in September, and a Regional Exhibit by Native American artists in October. We've also scheduled shows by Cape Cod Waterworks, The Printmakers of Cape Cod, and a great many individuals and collaborations, and we're excited about all of them. 2010 is going to be quite a year for us."
The National Watercolor Society was originally established in 1920 as the California Water Color Society. The name of the Society has changed twice since then: first, in 1967, to the California National Watercolor Society and again, in 1975, when the members voted to become simply the National Watercolor Society. It is now an international society with thousands of members from all over the US and Canada. The exhibit at the Cultural Center will mark the Society's 90th anniversary.
"We think it is very important to host exhibits by local emerging and established artists," says Nash, "but we also see great merit in welcoming exceptional work from artists beyond the bridges. We all benefit from that kind of exposure. And we look forward to introducing our many artist friends here on the Cape to Massachusetts members of the National Watercolor Society and others who travel here when we host the spring show."
The Cultural Center's mission is to increase access to education in the visual and performing arts, culture, and humanities for all Cape residents, with specific concentration on youth development and professional growth. It serves as a focal point for the community and visitors to the area interested in culture and the arts by offering instruction, entertainment, and exhibition.
It is located at 307 Old Main Steet in South Yarmouth. For more information, call 508-394-7100 or visit www.cultural-center.org.

Creative Convergence: Renowned painters at Cape Cod Museum of Art
Exhibit features landscape paintings by fifteen award-winning artists
The exhibition Creative Convergence: Renowned Painters Showing on Cape Cod is a collaboration between Cape Cod Museum of Art and Addison Art Gallery. The exhibition, on view at the museum January 12 - February 28, 2010, features landscape paintings by 15 award-winning painters, from across the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Bulgaria and Russia, who in the fall of 2009, met in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Inspired by its thriving art colony, historic town, as well as its magnificent surrounds, and each other, these artists created a wonderful diversity of plein air works in their individual styles. All established artists, they bring their completed works together for exclusive shows on Cape Cod, another area widely known for its natural beauty, history and for nurturing the arts.

Participating artists include Jeff Bonasia, Scott Burdick, Daniel Corey, Frank Gardner, Jerome Greene, Logan Hagege, Marc Hanson, Ignat Ignatov, Peter Kalill, Jeremy Lipking, Kevin McNamara, Ernesto Nemesio, Colin Page, Paul Schulenburg and Alexey Steele.
Impressionist landscape painters are drawn to the beauty of light falling across the landscape. Their avowed intent is to capture that impression in the two-dimensional plane of the canvas. We live at a time when this art of seeing and recording the look of nature is widely practiced and has been brought to an extraordinarily high level of excellence. Since the 19th century, Cape Cod had been a center for plein air painting because of the special quality of its light and the sculptural aspects of its landscape. It is a rare treat to be able to see the work of an internationally trained group of impressionist painters focused on one of the other amazing regions of the world. We will see the reality of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, presented through the filter of the artist's eye - some things familiar and some things arrestingly novel - and thus be able to vicariously experience the place. CCMA is fortunate to be able to work with Addison Art Gallery in presenting this exhibition which represents a local painting tradition in a much larger context.
- Elizabeth Ives Hunter, Executive Director CCMA
Once again, Addison Art Gallery has the privilege of presenting the work of internationally renowned painters to art lovers on Cape Cod. These accomplished artists have created inspired interpretations of subjects ranging from sun-soaked portraits and town vignettes to sweeping landscapes. Together in exhibition, these diverse incarnations offer the viewer an integrated sense of a magical place, its people and their lives.

Leonard Baskin’s print series, Laus Pictorum, will be on exhibition at Cape Cod Museum of Art December 12, 2009 - January 21, 2010. These prints, from CCMA’s permanent collection, are a series of 15 portraits of 19th century artists Baskin created in honor of artists he considered his spiritual ancestors. Included are 10 original wood engravings and five original etchings, signed and numbered by the artist.
Born in 1922 in New Jersey, Baskin was a sculptor, printmaker and book designer. During the 50's era of modern experimentation with abstraction, Baskin’s subject was the human figure, “anxiety ridden man, imprisoned…” His inspiration often came from the Bible, Greek and Sumerian imagery. As the son of a rabbi, Jewish imagery was also an important element in his work.
The Printmaker Instructor at the Worcester Art Museum in 1953, he went on to become a Professor of Drawing, Printmaking and Sculpture at Smith College.
