Ohhhhhhhhhh... this was really nice. I had watched the Oscars, not paying total attention, and at one point they'd singled out this sad-faced old character actor Jenkins and noted how many movie&TV things he'd been in and how much they loved him. Now I get it!

Want to win an "Oscar" make a movie that is pro-homosexual, pro-Ecoidiot, pro-illegal immigrant,pro-socialist, anit-western culture,anti- christian, anti-American, anti-family, anti-military, sprinkle in some perversions and Avant-Garde behavior and you have an Oscar in-waiting. Lets hope Hollywood goes the way of the "Print Media".

I was surprised to see that "Milk" did not depict more than one woman supporting Milk's cause. Is that historically accurate? I also wonder if this movie will enhance or harm gay awareness in and among the general masses of movie audiences who view the film.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Cruise's brilliant coup attempt is foiled when the assassins discover just a bit too late that there was a meeting of the Bad Combover And Silly Short Mustache Appreciation Society right next to where the Valkyrie plot was supposed to go down. The slaughter was horrific.

I loved the movie. Cruise was fabulous as Stauffenberg. Cruise looks a lot like him and this was the kind of role Cruise can really nail. Stories of the resistance in WWII are so inspiring and people don't often learn of the German resistance and how much suffering was endured by the German people. There are many life lessons to be learned by knowing history and too many people today know so little of it. An aside: My uncle had a glass eye just like Stauffenberg's and I thought the focus on the eye and his disabilities was brilliant and added to the haunting mood of the film.

solon Woody Allen frequently refers to Nazis in his dialog. I don't recall Shakespeare ever mentioning Hitler in any of his 'King' plays.

http://www.hatsdirect.com/index.html Let me put in a plug for The Hattery... my old fedoras from the NYC days are getting a little funky, and an American hat I'd ordered two years back didn't hold up well at all in damp weather. I found http://www.thefedoralounge.com/ which is a cabal of collectors. The upshot is that the place to turn for retro craftsmanship is... Australia. The Outback look so popular in the nineties didn't help me in my appearances as timewarped 1930s Betty Boop cartoonist... the shape of the crown ain't right. But the fellas at the Fedora Loungue pointed out the famous Akubra corporation also makes items such as the Federation IV Deluxe Moonstone and the Campdraft... which are way less expensive and far more durable than what I'd been looking at... I would imagine that Akubra is the manufacturer of the hats in the Luhrmann epic... Jackman may be wearing the brown and the silverbelly/tan versions of the Campdraft in these pictures... go check the selection and see what you think. You'll also be helping Australia deal with its rabbit issue! Great fur for felt!

Happy-Go-Lucky is about learning vs teaching. In the movie, Mike Leigh shows us three ways to learn: primary school, flamenco class and driving lessons. To my mind, the flamenco part was superb and would be the reason to recommend the movie. You mention close-ups.Let's face it, Poppy is a floundering, unorganized child stuck in first grade and living in a womb yet. Poppy and her girlfriends reminded me of puppies in a litter. There's a scene of them languishing the apartment like it is a whelping box. The driving instructor is a bitter, spent man squeezed into a tiny car and literally going around in circles. The real life here is in the dance teacher--vibrant, strong, organized, colorful and with a full range of emotions. She tells us, "Flamenco is life!" (Stamp of heels!)Got it?

As I recall HAPPY-GO-LUCKY was featured for a week at Cape Cinema, that cute old place w/ the Rockwell Kent ceiling mural on the grounds of the Cape Museum of Fine Arts. Cheryl & I went to see the French film "I've Loved You So Long" this week at that venue after enjoying another French flick, "Tell No One" also starring Kristin Scott Thomas that was featured there last month. KST's awesome in any language!

Great review Anne! I loved this movie and was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I wasn't crazy about the villain character. He was however the kind of character you love to hate. As for Bond, he is very intense and perfect for the job! I agree with the best ever Bond. I did however enjoy the humor in prior Bond films but maybe this one was too serious for added humor? As for his looks, he is stunning. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for the next Bond film. PS. I will look for your review about (Happy Go Lucky). See you at the movies!! Rach

Graig was really good in the last Bond film, "Casino Royale." He played the role a lot different from others, very cold blooded, as you would imagine a professional killer to be. I haven't seen this one yet, but if it's anything like the other one it should be good. And I'm not really an action pic guy.

I always rooted for 007 to be killed when he accidentally applies what turns out to be an extreme example of the wrong aftershave.

This was definitely different in some good ways, and some not so good ways, from the other Bonds. If you define a movie for women as one in which you get more than 5 seconds' worth of screen time of Daniel Craig without his shirt on, than this is not a film for women.
And if being a sensitive lover means not actually doing anything between the sheet that takes more than a nanosecond of screen time, than this guy is way sensitive. I thought Judi Dench was superb as always.
I miss the Bond bimbos of yore (we're talking the late 90's) such as Christmas Jones (Denise Richards), who is purportedly a nuclear physicist (now THAT's funny), who was rated the worst Bond girl of all time by Us Weekly, but who looked great in her shorts, work boots, and suspenders while she thwarted global nuclear annihilation before nailing Pierce Brosnan at the end of The World is Not Enough.
I agree with you, the chicks in Quantum are certainly more intelligent than in years past, but who says Jams Bond movies are supposed to be intelligent?
