I prefer the Endonesian method, which, translated to our alphabet, is called Wakenbake.

This perverse Eastern Asian pagan influence is a threat to the physical expansion of plus-size Americans everywhere. More hot dog less downward dog.

I've found yoga to be very helpful when I wake up at 2 a.m. and can't get back to sleep. Doing a series I once learned... something about stars... gets all the kinks out and usually is effective in getting me back to sleep.

The best-kept secret apparently is behind Pate's restaurant at Jeff Nelson's Whales' Tales of Enlightenment ashram/dojo... www.yogachatham.com for schedule of classes taught by his beautiful daughter Jen, who's been training at Kripalu since the age of 13. I've been there every week since she started almost 2 years ago and can't praise these classes enough...

There are two yoga on the beach classes in Brewster - one (I think it's daily?) at Crosby and one on weekends at Breakwater Beach. I took a Breakwater class once and it was absolutely beautiful, but the hardest class I've taken because of trying to balance in the sand ;-) (and this from a distance runner who does weights every week, too). I'd still recommend beach yoga to anyone. Too bad about Chatham charging your friend - I hope it's not much. I heard Dennis was getting persnickety about beach yoga, too.

Thanks bipr, I am working on a listing, at least of studios and classes so folks can find their own style, and you just gave me the idea to define a few different styles also in an upcoming blog entry, so the ferocious sweaters can find the hot yoga they love and the hatha folks can do the traditional hatha. Beach yoga isn't prevalent on Cape Cod, many of the towns don't allow it, (imagine, yoga on the beach!) Chatham charges my yoga teacher friend Valerie an exhorbitant amount to be there at 7 am at Lighthouse beach, but it's the best beach yoga ever! Di

Thanks for the blog. I've tried different kinds of yoga and find that basic hatha really helps my flexibility, strength and relaxation, while the "hot yoga" just made me sweat ferociously and fear for my cardiovascular health. It would be great if there were a comprehensive directory with schedules, locations and types of drop-in yoga classes available, especially all the beach ones. Maybe you could post one?
