One of my GFs gave her husband the Two step Program. The two steps were:
1) Stop drinking.
or
2) I'll kill you in your drunken sleep.

of course e should get to the truth about the program, and the program detractors. shine a light on the phonys, and the others that will not accept aa as presented and "our way". the nay sayers and detractors should never be told, or allowed to comment on the fact that bill w. too lsd into the early 60's. he was only trying some stuff out so he might catch the spiritual experience that he recd. when he was told he would probably have to be locked up in a nut ward. many of us scoff at the criminal that is "saved" when sent to prison, or on the way to the gas chamber. but out co founder was a different and special case. and the question about how folks stayed sober before the steps were even written down should be avoided at all costs. then there is the problem with the atory from the guy that did the 6 step program with dr. bob, and stayed sober.
we have to be careful to not let our bias against those people that are real alcoholics, and find other ways to stay sober. we do know that the real aa moto is, "our way is the only way".do other ways to stay sober pose a threat to aa?

Alcoholics Anonymous is a religious program that is often incompatible to atheists or those who already follow a religious path.
Stopping drinking is not the primary goal of AA, it is to have a personal relationship with God. Quitting is considered a byproduct of this new relationship.

I've been clean and sober for over twenty years and was told i would "do an aawol" or "they would shoot my kneecaps off." This is how AA used to be, not sugar-coated! I was 18 and am now 41. And it didn't kill me. Quite the opposite in fact, the process brought me to life. Relationships were formed and have endured for over two decades with all of the men I was with. Some are dead, some from alcohol. Why was I touched by the hand of God? Or better still why was I able to come to this belief. It was the twelve steps and further the unity with my "fellow" alcoholics in recovery, inspired by our traditions. None to be taken lightly. If you could see or read the original "How It Works" as Bill W. wrote it and the implications that would be derived from the raw version, we would be lost. As of this day I administer AAWOL groups in Rhode Island and am never at a loss for amazement in the changes that take place in the broken alcoholis spirit as a result. I happened upon this site after starting a web site for our groups to bring more into our fold. I wouldn't knock anything 'til I tried it

Perhaps the time has come for AA to expand it's horizons for all addicts, though they could in fact be separated into different addiction factions if you will.

This has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Why would someone waste thier time even writing this? If AA helps an addict, then so be it..case closed. Who cares if its food, metal or a thought. Get a life.

Ummmm... Danny you've stated that it's dangerous for you to sponsor junkies 'cause that's not your drug of choice. You may've slimmed down since getting off the sauce but... drawing conclusions about the spiritual needs of food-addicts-per-se might likewise be outside your area of expertise... I'm just sayin'...

Many the fellowship look at it as reserving the right to drink tomorrow, just not today.
It is less ominous to make it to bed time rather than till death do us part.

Hi Peter, Not good enough. He's got to 'WANT' to stop forever.
"Will he take every necessary step, submit to anything to get well, to stop drinking forever?" (142:1, Alcoholics Anonymous)
We "LIVE" a day at a time through the 24 hour plan. We don't DRINK EVER again. The idea that we "just don't drink" just for one day comes from outside of the AA practice and teaching. In fact it MAY be a large part of the the reason he has not done well in AA to this point - thinking that all he has to do is not drink 'today.' Another ubiquitous POP-AA slogan - never embraced by the co-founders. DJS

Many people can stop drinking if they want to. Other cannot stop even if they want to - even they need to.
Obviously it would be in the best interest of your health, your kids and your wife to stop drinking. I have a question:
Would you like to stop drinking once and for all? Now and forever?
If so then contact me privately please - and I will help you. Going in and out of AA - or just going IN AA without the solution won't do squat. I guess you found that out already. But I would be more than happy to show you what I did. No hitches. No conditions. No charge. It worked - fast and well. If not - at least looked into it right?

I hae been in and out of AA, with not to much success, but I think I've hit bottom, since they just told me that I have liver desease. I have been drinking for over 30 years, and my health is disappearing right in front of my eye's. My wife said that she is planning on being a widow within the next couple of years, and we have 6 kids. I think I am truely seeing the light here and want some change, for ME! I can't continue to live like this.

Hi, Danny:
A dog will drink beer, and even get drunk, but I've never been able to get a cat to go anywhere near a glass of beer or wine -not that I've really tried to get them to drink. Still, when a cat sniffs at a glass of beer or wine it just recoils like it was poison.

Nice segue. Ned - always keeping things "on topic" :)
Not just beer. Cat also goes well with many dry wines. "Schwatzkat Reisling" for one - although that was not developed by the Egyptians, obviously.

Cats are not mentioned in the Bible, yet they were vital to the Egyptians, who 'tamed' a desert species enough to live in the granaries and kill the rats. Without cats therefore, beer would never have been developed. It's a consbeeracy.

Joan is definitely a goddess, did justice to Pigpen when she sang with the Dead. If you go to a 'born again' meeting, you won't see as many with their palms in the air towards the altar as you would in Jerry Garcia's day.
The Celtic rituals of yore must have been heavenly; Big fire, random sex, superior progeny. Women rule!

Hi, Jon
Two weeks ago a church member played that song on guitar and sang during the early morning service at North Falmouth Congregational Church. It was well received by the congregation.
The song was still resonating in my head when I read Danny's post and the AA concept just kind of fit in with it, know what I mean?

There really IS a line in the Bible that says "beware of dogs"!
Also "God travels the circuits of heaven"...
But MUCH better with the goddess.

Sorry dude
you need to lighten up
whatever your fear is about AWOLs
maybe you need to do a 4th step on it.
i am a real alcoholic, you can't do the steps the wrong way. it's about searching and fearless, whatever way that works for the alcoholic is a good thing. You don't have a job in AA except to not pick up a drink for one day. The rest is gravy, but if you're not changing the selfish asshole you brought in then there's no guarantee.

Hey, that's Joan Osborne!
My second cousin, Mark Egan, played bass on that track. His was also the mournful bass note preceding "St. Teresa"
Just a little off-topic trivia...
My apologies, Danny.

Okay... we're getting rid of God... when did we GET God? About the time man began to harvest and store grains? Which were most easily transported across mountains as a commodity in the form of... EtOH...? Which leads us to conclude... we were better off with the Goddess, mushrooms and hemp. More cave paintings, less televised football.
