I have an idea -- let's build a nuclear plant in one of those poor states like West Virginia, and pipe all the electricity up to Nantucket. And when its time to dispose of the nuclear waste, let's truck it to one of the other poor states, like Mississippi or Lousiana -- what a great use for New Orleans, right? -- and just dig a big ass hole. You tight asses should get your heads out of the sand and suggest some workable solutions.

As long as the sun shines causing the winds to blow we will have this source of energy forever. And a further advantage is that wind energy produces no health risks and contributes nothing to air pollution. And unlike nuclear energy, wind energy creates no wastes requiring disposal. By harnessing this form of energy we can be sure that future generations will have a source of clean, cheap power for the rest of their lives. I think people are all caught up in the issure of aesthetics and money. A single wind turbine can prevent up to 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere each year. Furthmore, we are completly dependent on OPEC nations for our nations sources of energy. At this rate will will 75% depenpent on foriegn sources for energy. Thats just OUTRAGEOUS! Don Quixote on cape ...Its a great country.

You get what you vote for. And we continually vote for those who's personal or special interests come before that of the common good.

Please give me an example of an elected official in the last twenty years that contradicts that premise.

Please don't look in RI or Mass. You might be up all night.

Iran versus Iraq and Wind Turbines versus pink whale pants! Does anyone else feel the same way I do about this ongoing battle? It's just like Henry Kissinger's comment about the Iran- Iraq war: "It's too bad there has to be a winner."

We have two groups of greedy, self interested, special interest groups trying to manipulate the system to screw the average taxpayer. The bottom line comes down to a commercial developer who found a loophole in maritime law and geological location to exploit an idea that is politically correct, economincally stupid, environmentally questionable but most assuredly profitable (because of the tax subsidies to be funded by us.) On the other side, we have a well financed, pseudo environmental special interest group who seeks to protect its property values and scenic views. The same property and scenic views that they agressively protect against sharing with the common person. To accomplish this they exploit holes in our tax laws that permit lobbyist and legal payments to be characterized as charitable tax deductions. Its a great country.

Thank god for the Van Allen Belt which protects earth from the radiation produced by the large fusion reactor located nearby "The Sun". Its true that fusion at its simplest is the joining together of Hydrogen to make Helium however it continues up the periodic chart making heavier and heavier elements which are radioactive and therfore radioactive waste. As for wind power each of the wind generators has a capacity factor of approximately 30%. That means that it produces only 1/3 of what it could produce. So now triple the amount of generators required.

Capri...great synopsis.

I can't figure out why so many on Cape Cod don,t understand this. They think it is either/or.

Wind power,as you suggest and as proposed, will do nothing except destroy Nantucket Sound.

And make Mr. Jim even richer.

I thought this blog was shut down by Walter and CCToday.

I respectfully suggest that it is allowed to remain in some form for the same reason that Walter allowed an anti Cape Wind blog to begin with... to make it appear that CCToday is open-minded and to drive traffic to the site.

Against the Wind was the most commented on blog ever and Walter even bragged about that on NPR. But, anyone can see from the Cape Wind 'news' the site only publishes what is in Cape Wind's best interests. Correct me if I am wrong but this is called yellow journalism, is it not?

CCToday is a one-sided bought and paid for by Cape Wind site. Just look at the news that appears here. The so called news pieces on Cape Wind are hand-picked and you will never see an unbiased point of view.

Let's see just how long this comment will remain before it is erased and the comments closed down.

thank you mr. freeman, just a couple-

-cw removes NOTHING from the sea or ocs?

-is there potential benefit to marine shoal restoration from cw?

-are the turbines artificial islands or structures?

-what might constititutes unfair or unreasonable permitting to DOI?

-can fair market values be challanged?

once again, thanks.

The Mineral Management Service, part of the DOI is the lead federal agency reviewing CapeWind now, the ACE was the lead agency until the new energy bill passed last year put the MMS in charge with its more extensive background in permitting offshore structures (mostly offshore oil drilling platforms). All of the data gathered under the ACE was carried forward as well.

The wind is a resource, a wind farm extracts energy from the wind, so yes, this is mining, or at least extraction.

To get absurdly technical, the air has trace minerals in it, but they are not what provide energy.

The beauty of wind farming is there are no holes to dig, no moutains to level, nothing to burn. The wind is renewable and will never create an emission.

is the DOI the LEAD federal agency reviewing CapeWind (CW), i thought it was ACEs?

is wind a mineral?

is placing a modern wind turbine on a monopole foundation in sand "mining?"

what is CPN's address? they sound like a great resource.

Magic Eye, CPN has only presented facts on thier website. I know all the poeple who post there and take great pains to present only the truth.

Just because you disagree with the information, does not make it false.

Give me ANY information from CPN's website you consider untrue and I will show you the error of your ways.

I know you probably won't, but the invitation is open.

and that means WHAT, exactly? that holding nuclear weapons justifies idiocy?

as i've written before, and with *more* relevance than your comment, so, since you are so proud of this supremacy, do you volunteer to have the nuclear waste and tailings resulting from the construction of these weapons buried in your back yard? why not?

Cape Wind got the non bid amendment because they had already spent over 10 million dollars on the windfarm studies. That money has done more than just create paperwork, its helped educate the public and move the US offshore wind industry forward. Since the oil companies get to extract oil from public offshore waters then its not a big deal to give a non bid lease for the use of Nantucket Sound for non extraction energy purposes. Companies can mine the federal lands for minerals and extract oil from public lands for almost no cost but heaven forbid if someone wants to put up windmills in front of the Kennedy compound.

I voted for the windmills before I voted against them....

Ellwood: Powerline injuries and deaths are HUGE. do check with the usfws on that one. And also know there is a working group with the power companies across the country in and attempt to do something about it. Over the years I have personally received hundreds of power line injured birds... many were dead from electrocution, many lost a wing to it being fried, many could never fly free again. Mass Audubon does not care for the birds directly... talk to someone that does. I told you where I got my information. From the Head of Safeguarding at the Ministry of Defence in the UK./ And do be aware that the FAA is now conducting their own studies and has put a wind farm on hold due to this new and vital information. I would suggest that YOU do your homework before you spout off nonsense.

Magical Eye; Your eye has been blinded. Listen to the FAA. The minimum altitude for Nantucket Sound is 2,500 Feet. The Height of the wind towers is 426 feet try to dispute that. The Federal aviation Authority sets those standards. I am some one that is informed . Where do you get your information? You still did not answer my question about the last time you saw a bird fly into a building a tree or, to make matters more difficult a power line. Check with the Audabaun society to see how smart our feathered residents are. Your band wagon has holes in it research is badly needed in your case.

Elwood: I have no idea who you really are so your statement of credibility is not credible. Anyone can pose as anyone on the internet as you should know. As to who I listen to... It is not politicians as I take most of what they say with a grain of salt... especially those who are running for office. On the radar issue I am listening to the Ministry of Defence and have been in communication with them over the past few months. Here is a quote from the Head of Safeguarding, in his 4/12/06 letter to me "What Wing Commander Loveday meant was that while we are confident that solutions are possible we are looking to others to develop them. But I must make it absolutely clear that no satisfactory solutions exist at the moment so we see no reason to change our current policies and procedures". As to hazards to birds I will take my over 25 years of experience, expertise and knowlege over yours!

To Magical Eye::How about 25 years in the Air Force as a Radar repairman do you think that gives me some knowlege as to what can and can not be done. You need to stop listening to the politicians and start thinking for yourself. After the initial cost has been paid and you have Maintainance to worry about, the decrease, if you write the contracts properly and take the graft for the local politicians out you will have some low cost electricity. There are more than one types of wind generators. Some even have much smaller blades and can pick up the wind from any direction without having to change directions. They will generate the same energy as the big ones. You obviously have a computer, look up wind generators on it as research and you will be surprised. That is where I am coming from it is called experiance and research Try It As for the Birds you worry so much about. When is the last time you say them hit a house or run into a tree? Give them some credit they obviously have more sence than they are being given credit for. Those are my reasons ANY QUESTIONS?

This just came to me from CW Senator John McCain joins the fight!
Yesterday it was reported in Energy and Environment Daily that Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is opposed to the anti-Cape Wind provision in the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act. Senator McCain was quoted saying, "I think it [the anti-Cape Wind provision] is clearly a violation of the way we do business around here and I would oppose it as strongly as I can."
