Absolutely correct, sir. Geocachers have done a lot to clean up the woods. I mentioned it a while back, but it may be time for a fuller exploration of the topic.

There are some people who just like to be snarky when they comment, so I didn't take it seriously (about tossing junk in the woods). Thanks again for your clarification. And I don't know why the guy in charge would take umbrage at your last bit of helpful information ;-0

Buzz, wherever you hide it, let me know and we'll have the Cape Cod Geocachers (an unofficial crew) hold a Cache In-Trash Out event there. I'll blog about it. Thanks for the tip :-)

bpayne66 - check past "Trail Hounds" to find some of my favorite caches on the Cape. If you have a couple of days, try the series of Cape Cod Towns by erycka and wichie. It's a puzzle that brings you to all 15 towns on Cape. And do not miss "Dune:" Best Cape cache ever.

In response to: H1N1 and Kids
15 out of 20 kids in my son's combined 7th-8th grade class were out yesterday, including my son. Some had confirmed H1N1. Others, like my son, had some symptoms (mild fever, cough, sore throat) but didn't get too bad. Son had the seasonal flu shot in Sept., and that may have mitigated whatever he had. Best to just keep 'em home for a few days so they don't infect/re-infect everyone. This, too, shall pass (hopefully without incident).

I don't really like most big boxes, but I love Target. Cool stuff, good prices, not ALL made in China (although most still is, alas), friendly and helpful customer service, and bright, clean stores. Plus, they've got a long tradition of philanthropic giving, back to the 5% Club days in Minneapolis, when corporations set aside at least 5% of profits to support nonprofits.

I heard discussion of this on NPR yesterday and I had to laugh. Basically, if you read to your kids and let them play, they've got a good chance of doing just fine. Being a trained monkey who can recite sight words at age 3 is no predictor of future academic success (maybe just of future therapy sessions).

BTW, I'd heartily recommend the Fred Levine series of docudramas: "Road Construction Ahead," "Where the Garbage Goes," "Cleared for Take-Off," etc. Boys especially love 'em. Y'know, for the times you need to read the paper or update your blog or something....

In response to: Punkhorn hunting: Too close for comfort
To be fair, Karen, this isn't a news story but an opinion. The news article, one of several on the topic, is referenced through a link. The reason for concern is that the Punkhorn parcel, which is identified in the blog by its boundaries, encompasses a major trail (Boot Swamp) that appears on the town website and on park information kiosks. The other proposed parcel (across Slough Road) isn't in the Punkhorn and isn't around an established trail network.

Oh, don't remind me about how we dismissed the idea of buying a house near the bay in Eastham in the mid-1990s, or the house near the pond in Sandwich that was ~$120,000 in the late '80s. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.... that's life.

In response to: Another Sexist Parent Magazine.
Well, I'm going to be 50 next week and I look AWESOME... oh wait, that's not what this thread is about ;-).

Tom, that's an unfortunate and outdated image in the S&S mag, and not what we who still have kids at home actually experience. I know several stay-at-home dads (wife is typically a doctor, it seems) and even more traditional families where the dad does the cooking/shopping.

As for the parenting mags, which I used to write for, many have regular columns written by dads (see Bay State Parent, a freebie available off Cape). The reason the editors and most writers are women is because they pay squat and can be done on a freelance or work-at-home basis. I don't know too many guys who would (a) work for that low pay, and (b) who'd like to put together endless articles about the more uh, physical aspects of childbirth and breastfeeding. But hey, I'd love to see more dads roll up their shirtsleeves in the parenting publications, too. Go for it! Submit a column idea.

Seriously, what's with the routine 10-mile back-ups to the Bourne this year? In previous years I don't remember much over 5 miles and usually around 3. Now the Sagamore seems to have shorter delays.

I remember a 1986 Volkswagen Synchro wagon that my husband and I drove up and down the Lower Cape one summer day because it had air conditioning and the cottage and beaches were hotter than Hades LOL! The last few years it seems the roads have been more crowded with humongous SUVs. Just this year I'm starting to see more small cars, especially Priuses, which makes me breathe a little easier when biking precariously along the white shoulder line (sorry folks - to get to the store I have to cover .8 mile on 6A).

In response to: How would Single Payer work for you?
"Choose your own doctor" is an interesting phrase. We all proclaim to it as a major tenet of our healthcare values. But who really gets to choose their own doctor these days? I've always had good health insurance, but when I've moved and had to find someone new, it's basically been whoever's taking new patients and doesn't have a scandal sheet. Word of mouth and the (erstwhile) Yellow Pages are how many choose their doc. What kind of quality measure is that? If I want to see the specialists who treat the Kennedys and other elites, fat chance getting an appointment! So whatever goes on in this debate, that "choose your own" phrase is a red herring.

BTW, now that I'm self-employed, the fact that I can't deduct insurance premiums from taxes the way employee benefit plans can really rots.

wb - I don't know what's with the 495/25 traffic this year. It used to be a typical Saturday might be a 5-mile back-up, over in 35-40 minutes; last week it was 9 miles and this week you caught 8 1/2. 1. Not signaling your turn or lane change.
2. Forgetting to turn off your turn signal once you've completed the turn (what Jerry Seinfeld called "the eventual left").

There are two yoga on the beach classes in Brewster - one (I think it's daily?) at Crosby and one on weekends at Breakwater Beach. I took a Breakwater class once and it was absolutely beautiful, but the hardest class I've taken because of trying to balance in the sand ;-) (and this from a distance runner who does weights every week, too). A look at health policy history shows us this is deja vu all over again. The AMA opposed Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s because it would lead to "socialized medicine." In some areas, doctors own most, if not all, of the labs, radiology centers and other ancillary facilities -- and then prescribe unnecessary tests to bring in more revenue without benefiting patient health. No wonder health care expenditures are 17% now of our GDP.

I'm sure the detail-setting sessions have been interesting. What about employers who offer health insurance through self-insured plans and therefore are governed under federal ERISA regs? They'll not be in the pool. What about state and municipal employees on Cape who are covered through the Group Insurance Commission? They're out. Or companies that offer group insurance across the state or across the country? Same with (federal) Medicare-covered retirees. Cape Care might work for the local-only small business, self-employed or unemployed (assuming there's an exclusion from MassHealth), but that's a very small risk pool over which to spread the costs. Interesting, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed.

Here's what I don't get: Our house borders a herring run between ponds #3 and #4 down from Stony Brook. Usually I hear (and see) the alewives splashing all May - they start coming in about two-three weeks after they're at the grist mill. I haven't seen any here this year, although I heard there were some last Saturday. Where, or where have our little fishies gone?

Coupla points: The Mass. Education Reform Act of 1993 required public school teachers to obtain a master's within 5 years (if memory serves)to obtain professional licensure. Yeah, most are M.Ed.s.

There are private schools and there are private schools (or "independent," as is preferred). Big difference between a nonsectarian college prep school like Cape Cod Academy or Falmouth Academy and a parochial school, although both are private and both may provide excellent learning environments. Most people won't put up with paying thousands of dollars a year for crappy learning environments. I don't know any college prep school - independent or religious-affiliated - that has academic teachers with just an associate's degree. But there could be some in auxiliary positions - I don't know.

I'm not sure I see a connection between the Pike and the Cape. Most people drive the most direct way. If you're coming from NYC or CT you either take 84 to the Pike to 495 and 25, or you follow 95 through Providence to 195 and 25. From Vermont/western NH it would be 91 to the Pike, or deal with the traffic around Boston and 495. Mainiacs aren't gonna take the Pike.

Thanks for the article. As a year-round part-timer (no seasonal verbs in our family), I'm continually amazed at the "pull the bridge up behind us" mentality. Often it's expressed by so-called year-rounders who "winter" in Florida. Even lifelong Cape Codders occasionally leave the sandbar -- see above-mentioned Florida, or check out Maine every summer -- so think about how you like to be treated when you venture over the bridge. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Peace - and here's to a productive tourist season!

In response to: MCAS-Recent News & Analysis
We need to teach children how to learn, how to think critically, how to work as a team member, how to find information, how to create original work rather than just copy from a model. Teaching to the test doesn't do this. Standardized tests are OK when used for diagnostic purposes or to evaluate curriculum, but MCAS quickly became a drill-and-kill tool affecting teacher pay and real estate values. Even after a decade of MCAS, a district's scores correlate largely with the income level of its population. Well, duh. Learning is more than just a bunch of facts.

My kids have gone through a progressive private P-8 school with no grades, no tests till middle school (and then only for feedback), project-based curriculum, and they're thriving. Teachers at schools where this school's grads go after 8th grade are impressed by their work ethic and classroom participation.

Funny, I had to memorize state capitals in 3rd grade and tonight I was wracking my brain trying to remember the capital of New Jersey.... That's what Google's for, right?

Practicalities aside, how would they define "resident"? I heard it would be based on where the vehicle is registered, so all those people who call themselves year-rounders but register their car in Florida, where they winter, would have to pay. And non-resident taxpayers who already pay full-freight property taxes plus more, in some towns, would have to pay (assuming their vehicle is registered at primary residence). So is it really just hosing the tourists?

In most small communities, the school dept. budget makes up the lion's share of expenses. Not to rag on public school teachers (who don't make a lot individually), but if you want to put a face to town spending, a lot of it is their aggregate salaries and benefits. Health insurance, in particular, should be brought more in line with what the rest of the working citizens have had to live with for the past decade. Then maybe we'll come up with a more sensible national policy for health care coverage.

Walter, you misread me. I agree online is what's here and what will be for the next generation, and overall there are a lot of good things that come from it. On a national level, I hope the quality publications will rise to the top of the very mixed bag of what's out there. But there are (were?) some good ideals from the "old journalism," like fact-checking, having an editor give a second look at a piece before publication, and having a clear command of the English language, that I hope we can preserve. Sometimes these are sacrificed for speed and cheap content. You're doing a great job. I was referring to complexities in the global trend.
02/07/09 @ 4:36 pm
Of course your costs are low, Walter - you don't pay for most of your content ;-). Newspapers still have to pay reporters. I'm not saying stick with the old model - obviously it's a dinosaur. And while your publication maintains high quality standards, there are overall fewer quality controls when speed is the primary criterion for running a story. I'm concerned we may be throwing the baby of professional journalism out with the bathwater. The questions is how do we maintain the best (certainly never perfect, but at least ideals) of professional journalistic standards with the efficiency and marketability of online news -- and pay reporters for quality work?

I've been a big fan of Cape Cinema but I've raised the issue with them a few times of doing more to recognize, and possibly encourage, the younger set to attend indie films. We have brought our school-age kids there for several PG-13 shows. They've learned to like films in spite of subtitles. While ticket prices list at least 3 variations on adult: regular, member, and senior discount, they don't list children's prices. If you ask, they'll give you the senior discount for kids under 12. Youth are invisible. I'd think it would be good to encourage young people to appreciate this genre. How about a student discount?

Nice thoughts, Opi. It brought back memories of driving home from church on Christmas Eve and listening to those NORAD reports on the car radio (still on in the late 60s and early 70s). We wimped out on church last night but enjoyed the childlike essence of the holiday by pulling out "Charlie Brown's Christmas" and "Little Mermaid" - and this with two teenagers LOL. Also got some take-out Chinese in deference to the Jewish wing of the family.
Merry Christmas.

If I were retail planning czar I'd get rid of all the icky big-box discount stores and replace them with one or two Targets - maybe in Hyannis and Falmouth. Keep the Christmas Tree Shops 'cause they were originally local and tourists love 'em, and maybe keep the Job Lot in Dennisport for those obscure, really cheap must-have items. You'd have all you need to furnish the house, dress in Mizrahi chic and serve gourmet hors d'oeuvres to your guests.
And keep your cotton-pickin' fingers off the National Seashore.

I don't think there's a cache yet in Nantucket Sound, although there is one on Little Sipson Island in Pleasant Bay, and of course over on The Islands. Maybe you could be the first to place one there, Mav. It would be rated a 5 for terrain difficulty (all caches where you need a boat are in this category). I'm sure geocachers would make every attempt to be neat, and wouldn't even discharge their waste into said pristine waters.

Sorry Ned, I was referring to this classic '80s song (and trying to get you to 100 comments):

It's too late
To fall in love with Sharon Tate
But it's too soon
To ask me for the words I want carved on my tomb
So I think it's time that you all start
To think about gettin' by
But what about that need to go out and find somebody to love
It's too late
There's no one left that I even wanna imitate
You see, you just don't know
I'm here to give you my heart
And you want some fashion show
But it ain't no contribution
To go and rely on an institution
To validate your chosen art
And sanction your boredom
And let you play out your part
It's too late
You know when they got nothin' to give
They only part their legs for what's negative
And they're so decadent . . .
Until their daddy's money from home's all spent
So I think it's time, 'cuz it's too easy
To rely on worshipping strangers and devils in bed,
Though they do get good drugs, and they do give good head
It's too late
You shoulda realized I was worth the wait....

11/15/08 @ 6:10 pm
Cru, I wouldn't wax too romantic about the People's Republic of Cambridge (and this from a liberal). Having spent a good amount of time there years ago, I've seen what rent control can do to distort a rental market and discourage/prevent home ownership. But look at the towns that various magazines point out as best places to raise a family... Keene, NH, for example. 'Also in the boonies and in an area popular with tourists and retirees, but they seem to have found a good mix. And they welcome young people. Their indie movie theatre probably even lists prices for children and students, not just three variants of adult/senior/member prices (sorry, Cape Cinema). I don't know what the answer is, but let's include the young 'uns in this discussion and look at other good models.
11/15/08 @ 11:50 am
Andy, I'd agree about schools not being the make-or-break issue here. The Cape has some excellent schools, including charters like Lighthouse and Sturgis that would be a draw if that were one's main criterion.
11/15/08 @ 9:32 am
I didn't see too many people under, oh, age 55 or so, mentioned in the article as participating in the summit. With all due respect, and they could've been there but not mentioned, I think we need to include young families and young adults in the solution, before they're gone for good.

Andy, I'd venture that regional schools - at least at the high school level - could provide more AP courses, better arts programs, etc. But sending one's second-grader on a two-hour bus trip to a regional elementary school is not a plus.
11/11/08 @ 1:47 pm
'Not surprising that Jeff's parents weren't too keen on the French-Canadian Jeannine. Mill owners wouldn't typically fraternize with the help.

I didn't realize this was THE Windle family of Windle Industries, Windle Field, Windle Street and several old mills in Millbury. This makes his criminal actions even more bizarre.

But it's not so bizarre that Jeannine switched churches. With all due respect to the priest, Congregational, Unitarian, and probably lots of other denomination churches are full of ex-Catholics. Either they switched for a spouse (happens all the time) or wanted a spiritual life without the RC structure.

At first I thought this was part of the trend in the mid-to-lower Cape to deny the existence of children other than cute grandchildren who only visit for a week or two and then leave the place in peace. You know: the phenomenon that causes otherwise intelligent organizations like Cape Cinema to list three different levels of adult prices (regular, member and senior) but no special prices for children or students. But no, it's happening statewide. The McDonald's in Worcester where I took my kids to blow off steam in the ball pit on dreary winter days has removed the Play Place and installed... picnic tables.

At least the print in "g" is clearer than our always-blurry edition of Sidekick. The new comics titles are hard to read, being about an 8-point font and turned sideways. I hope this latest attempt at saving the daily print works. I like Alex Beam. I like the Globe writers, at least the ones who are over 23 and have a little bit of contextual knowledge, including the definition of the baby boom cohort (b. 1946-1964) and the fact that bra burning was a short-lived phenomenon of the 1970s, not the early '60s [really, Globe writers have started screwing up facts like these]. In response to: Let's Privatize Public Libraries
Ah, libraries: an important part of community culture whether or not you use them. Yes, info can be found on the Internet, but it's also a cesspool of simply bad information. Library story times inculcate a love of reading and appreciation for good literature. The West Springfield library invites preschoolers to celebrate their 5th birthday with a visit to the library and their own library card.

Many towns' public libraries are run by private nonprofits. Brewster Ladies' Library gets only about 7% of its income from town and another 2% from the state, if the undated info on Education Bug is accurate. I think Opi's concern is with for-profit companies owning libraries.

But I think consolidation of at least some branches or little libraries would make sense. If the Senior Center bus can make the rounds, it should be able to have a stop at the main library.

TV probably doesn't play as big a role now that everything's on the Internet. A kid wouldn't miss much, socially-culturally speaking, by not keeping up with the latest reality show. Art is problem-solving, and is vitally important to a complete education. It integrates math, communication, cultural perspective. Old Landing, Old Landing... gotta remember that one. When people ask where to stay, my mind usually goes blank or can only come up with such nuggets as the B&Bs on 6A or, if they look like big spenders or big families, Ocean Edge. And does this place have the rare and highly prized option of staying for only one night? Well, sounds like local color and good location.

While I suppose I should be grateful that the car hitting the utility box didn't involve another vehicle, what is it with these low speed "car vs. pole (or building)" collisions? Cell phones? Elderly drivers? Drunk drivers? Confused tourists? Humongous SUVs in which you can't see the road around you? I wonder whether NHTSA or DPH or anyone else has done a study on contributing factors. It seems we get a lot of them here.

I loved the Marshside when it was a hole-in-the-wall and the late great Johnny Kelley hung out there. Good food, nice view. The new building is lovely, but the prices have gone way up. 'Guess they have to pay for it somehow. The Northside in Brewster has good food at a reasonable price, although the indoor ambience is a bit dark. Sit outside if you can.

Hi Jon,
Here's the link to maps of Dennis town conservation trails (it's under Natural Resources) - Sorry, editors, I don't know how to make a space-efficient hyperlink in a comment:
http://www.town.dennis.ma.us/dept/naturalres/cam06_4.pdf.
That's where you'll find most public trail maps. Barnstable and Yarmouth have trail guides in addition to maps. Harwich Conservation Trust is coming out with one very soon.

'Hope this helps.

Hey, folks, sorry, I don't mean to offend. These town conservation areas aren't exactly secrets - they're on town Web sites and listed in travel and trail guides. Plus, they have signs along the road. I've found most tourists don't bother with these fairly rustic places. And locals like to know about them if they're inclined to take a hike - it may increase appreciation for the beautiful but fragile nature of the area.

Solon, LOL about your cat :-).

Trail Hound is all in favor of Nantucket's plan to identify and preserve public rights-of-way. She will happily go to the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It doesn't take much for a private land owner to put a fence across a public way and suddenly it's no longer public. As a former Midwesterner who came east to go to one of those high falutin' schools (a good strategy for admissions diversity), I encourage Easterners to consider the Midwest. By golly, you can still get an "elite" education west of the Hudson, it's slightly less expensive than NE, and you'll have better odds of getting in. Or for the best value, take two years at community college to get a marketable skill, then transfer to a four-year college for the finishing degree. I've got my teen thinking about Canadian universities too, which are a third of the cost of US schools, even for international students.

whatthe, that average Catholic school, if still charging less than $4K, must be heavily subsidized by the Diocese, or that's just the half-day kindergarten rate. Tony, I hear whatchyer sayin'. Every place has a way to separate the insiders from the outsiders. In my off-Cape town, it's how many generations your family has lived there (and if your family worked in the mill, you're higher on the power ladder). On the Cape, it's full-time vs. part-time or, God forbid, tourists. And among the full-timers, it's Nickersons/Eldredges/Doanes vs. recent washashores. 'Don't know the solution, just keep up the sincere, thoughtful participation.

I've tried to find a way to attach a holster to my running shorts... just kidding. It's something I think about, but to tell you the truth I'm more afraid of encountering wildlife or twisting an ankle in the woods than running into human weirdos, who tend not to be out bright and early in the morning. That said, I sometimes pick up a stick or stone, always tell someone where I'm going and when I should be back, and keep aware of my surroundings, including possible escape routes. The best is to go in with a companion, but I'm the only runner in the family. If I'm geocaching, I take a cell phone. Oh, I also wear orange and make noise if it's hunting season. I've encountered guys with rifles more than once.

The CC Times article said that everyone else in the biking party am-scrayed, taking the vehicles with them, before police could interview them. They knew it was illegal.

It's against the law to ride an ATV or dirt bike on public property. It's also against the law to ride said vehicles on private property without the owner's permission. I would like to remind the two gentleman who were gouging up the trail behind my house this afternoon of that.

Paper or silicon? Paper! It's just not the same taking your PDA/laptop/iPod to the beach, to the bathroom, or lounging on the couch with it on a lazy Sunday. That said, newspapers are jumping to online because they're scared to death of their falling ad revenues. It is nice to get "instant news" online, and the interactive nature of blogs opens up new worlds of citizen journalism. But I hope we don't throw the baby, or fishwrap, out with the bathwater. Nice post, Rockhopper. I don't miss those Minnesota temperatures or snow, either.

As for views, I sometimes wonder whether I'd be up in arms if something new were to spring up in Cape Cod Bay. I already see lights all along the semi-circular shore, and on a clear night/day see the twinkling of Plymouth and P'Town. One of my favorite photos is littered with sails from the Sea Camps. The view I don't like is Mirant in Sandwich, especially when it's spewing haze.

I also don't like the view of cell towers, but we seem to have accepted them all over the landscape without a fuss.

I have worked with public schools, but my own kids go to an independent, progressive (remember John Dewey?) school that does not use standardized test or grades for assessment. Learning is project-based and integrates intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical components. The kids love to learn. And after they graduate and go on to high schools - whether private or public - they do phenomenally well, even in traditional academic environments. Flexible, creative thinkers are what employers are looking for to succeed in the global economy, too. Tests can give some valuable feedback, but the extent to which high-stakes standardized testing has taken over education is counter-productive to real learning.

People say that independent school students do well because they have involved parents and higher socio-economic status. This is true. But it's also true that MCAS scores largely correlate with those same factors. So, why are we killing education at the altar of the almighty standardized test?

I'd like to see that 24% of 18-50 year olds broken down into a few more subgroups. I'd bet it's heavily weighted towards the under-35s. It's a generational thing. I don't like tattoos, just like I don't like body piercings other than a hole or two for earrings. I'm 48, and when I was starting out, these things were considered fashion "don'ts" if you wanted to succeed in the "respectable" world (remember: women had to wear those silly dress-for-success bow tie blouses and suits to be taken half seriously). And yes, I know some perfectly lovely people with tattoos. Things may have loosened up, thankfully, but old prejudices remain, mine included :-).

I think Opinionator's story is charming. I recall having to mount a major campaign to win my mother's approval to get my ears pierced when I was 13, because in her generation, only gypsies had pierced ears.

In response to: The Graying Of Cape Cod
This article sums it up, especially for the mid-lower Cape. It happened again last week: spouse and I (late 40s) went to indie cinema with middle schoolers for PG-13 movie. Ticket prices were listed for adults, adults with membership, and senior discounts. Um... no children? Students? If you ask, kids get the senior discount rate, but it's as though they're not even on the radar screen. And they're not! They were the only youth there, and we were among the youngest adults.

On Sunday we went to a "family program" on crabs at National Seashore. The room was packed with gray-hairs, causing some who arrived late, with strollers, to be turned away.

More telecommuting and convenient public transportation to suburban metro jobs (495 high tech belt, etc.) might help keep families in the area who can at least afford the housing.

Nothing says spring like the screaming seagulls and crows overhead, telling us the herring are running. Watching the fat gulls scoop up their fish dinner at the Stony Brook mill, you'd think the poor herring don't have a chance. And yet, the survivors of the first challenge have made it through Lower Mill Pond, through Upper Mill Pond, through Walkers Pond, and are now on their way to Slough Pond and perhaps even Pine Pond beyond that. It's true that many in the pack will be running at a slow pace (~ 9:00 minutes/mile for a 4-hour marathon) but the elites are running sub-5:00s, or sub-5:30s for women. A 38-year-old teacher and mother of two I know ran it in 3:11 last year, a 7:17 pace. I dunno about you, but my best single mile time was around 6:00, and that was 16 years ago, so I am in awe. Sounds like sour grapes to me, Monpon. If you were a real sports writer you'd know that "joggers" don't run marathons, runners do. 26.2 miles - running. You try it.

Hancock and the cities en route feel it's worth the financial investment, and don't forget the $7.5 million raised last year for charities like the Jimmy Fund (Dana Farber) and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

And then there's the tradition:
The marathon is as much a part of Boston as the Red Sox, maybe more so because the marathon is considered a successful event.

I've run it seven times and it's been wonderful and awful. Retired from it when I turned 40. But it's an event to be respected and I sure as heck am glad I'm not facing the wind, rain and cold that runners will have tomorrow. Yeah, let's see how the Kenyans do....

I have advocated for a windfarm to be located at the top of the hill formerly known as Worcester airport. The airport has never been able to support commercial aviation. It's up on a hill. It's remote. It's windy. It's already-developed land. It would add enough energy to the grid to power eastern Massachusetts.

Now that former Worcester mayor Tim Murray is Lt. Gov., I'd think he'd be eager to find good use for this white elephant site.

Kathleen,

Interesting comment. The Boston Society of Architects sponsored a competition for the wind farm and its viewing area last year, called Windscape. There's an exhibition catalog, which I tried to post the link to but CCToday wouldn't allow it without the secret phrase (put where?). Anyway, Google it and you'll find it.

BTW, we're neighbors around Slough. Is your studio open regularly? Maybe you could host an exhibition of local artists' concepts for wind power....

Obviously the chamber saw it otherwise, and was reaching out to a constituency that does care about the Cape (yes, tourists do care because they keep coming back). The chamber feels its members are best served in the long run without the toothpicks and blinking lights in Nantucket Sound. That's their decision. If you disagree and you're a chamber member, take it up internally.

CVBs aren't always the silver bullet for tourism either (the chamber I worked with had its own tourism department and it coordinated with the CVB, but the CVB was pretty weak in our area. Worcester CVB - 'nuff said.)

So you might think anyone who disagrees with your perspective is an idiot, but the chamber acted rationally.

Do I dare jump in here?

I worked in another regional chamber of commerce, and while I didn't see the CC chamber's decision-making process on this, I would imagine the chamber board of directors discussed and may well have voted on this issue. If you're a chamber member and disagree with the policy, speak up to your board! They're the real governance.

I think Wendy's done an admirable job all in all. It's hard trying to please so many diverse constituents. Her work with the arts foundation and cultural economic development, a key part of the Cape's tourism economy, is well-regarded statewide.

Katie, I appreciate your sentiment, but please tell us uninformed who, exactly, has banned the book. I find it highly unlikely that librarians (the American Library Association) would support this censorship. Was it a school committee (a political body), or a principal, or the board of trustees of a library? Librarians are one of the last guardians of free speech, and have been willing to violate the Homeland Security Act to protect your right to read what you want to read without Big Brother watching you. Your blog gives no evidence that they are the ones calling for the censorship of "scrotum," but you clearly imply that they're behind it.

Love her or hate her, Oprah has been extremely successful because she can connect so well with so many women in America. When I was on 12-week maternity leave from my high-powered executive job (ahem ;)), I enjoyed tuning in. Now that I'm self-employed and work 'round the clock, I still occasionally give it a glance if it's an interesting topic.

Very elderly man shuffles up to the counter.
Clerk asks him to look into the viewfinder for the vision test. He can't find the viewfinder.
Clerk points out the viewfinder to him and asks him what he sees. He says he doesn't see anything. Clerk says, "Don't you see the letter E there?" He says, "Yes, E."
Clerk stamps his renewal A-OK and sends him on his way.

Drive defensively.

Yup, CCT, did read it and was just clarifying. Some of the comments were along the lines of "this is one of the best blogs you've done." For a journalist, it's an interesting line to draw between cut-and-pasting existing material and creating one's own. As blogs proliferate, will they face the same plagiarism scrutiny as the print media?

But not to be cranky. It's a fun post and thanks for sharing.

Cheers.

Yes it's funny; but it's not an original blog. Are there any guidelines for noting that this is a copy of already circulating material?

This e-mail has been making the rounds lately, but thanks for adding the Cape Cod Barbie. That was missing from the previous version :).

(And why do I feel so strangely simpatico with MetroWest Babs?)
