Although I bought a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch, I think that it has become a commercial business and not just a church fundraiser. The church should start paying real estate taxes now, just like the nurseries and garden centers down the street that also sell pumpkins.

No choice gotta pay. The golf course IS the open space requirement for this cluster development. Popular in the 1980's, can't do golf instead of or as open space any more. If they stop subsidizing the golf course now, it will grow over. Better pay up an try to run a surplus later.

This move has more to do with sparing the Senator the indignity of watching lesser politicians climb over his body while it's still warm. The Senator wants to resign before he dies.

While he lives, Governor Patrick at the behest of President Obama, would have to appoint Kennedy's hand picked replacement. In effect, Ted gets to pick the next Senator.

The real reason Block Island waterfront home owners do not oppose wind mills is because they do not own the shoreline. Cape Cod homeowners own the shore, which allows them to think that they own the view as well.
Otherwise, Rhode Islanders would be just the selfish bastards that our local swells are.

Ironic that they call it the Fresh Air Fund, when Cape Cod has the worst air quality of any region in Massachusetts. Guess they named it back in the 60's when the air was cleaner here compared to there.

Here we go again; it's about the birds, the fish and the tourists. It's never about the swells getting what they want; owning the sea even beyond the shoreline that they already own. Now a new thing on their list of demands; the airspace over the sound. Get the feeling that we're all being held hostage by greedy little bastards who already own everything else.

In response to: Cape Cod private schools ride out the recession
Give me a break. Teaching in public schools do not require a Masters. If a fraction of teachers have one, it's usually a Masters in Education form Bridgewater State College.

Quick, what's the best public high school on Cape Cod? Sorry, that was a trick question.

What we have now is a circle of mediocrity. Mediocre students graduating from mediocre high schools going to mediocre colleges getting mediocre degrees and coming back to teach in the same mediocre schools.

In response to: Same old, same old at Cape Cod Commission
Imagine how generally clueless the Selectwoman from Yarmouth, Suzanne McAuliffe has to be to beleive that the Cape Wind cable is 8 feet (instead of 8 inches) wide! Of course she has those lying SOS at the Cape Cod Times to blame for that. Even Cliff Carol didn't fall for that one.

While we're on the subject, the new Airport Manager didn't aquit himself well either. His opposition to Cape Wind is in direct contradiction to the support of it by Dan Wolf, the biggest carrier of air passengers and pilots that will be flying over the wind farm. If he's not worried, what's Bud Breault worried about? The air traffic controllers comfortably seated back at the tower?

In response to: Local non-profits mostly transparent on executive salaries
APCC donors should demand the disclosure of that information. They should also complain to the "Network for Good" of which they are a member, if they don't get it.
You can also check with Barnstable County,(FIA)because they receive substantial public funding, they would have to disclose salary information. You can also ask the members of her Business Roundtable how much she makes.
If we all knew how much Maggie Giest made, or how much John O'Brien is getting paid to lobby, the outrage would be similar to that of AIG's bonuses.

In response to: What was I thinking?
Bill, your comments are bordering on the obsurd. Why didn't you just tell us in the blog that there is a meeting of the Commissioners and the Assembly Delegates next week to discuss the County Budget.

What do you say? Are we all invited? So we can have a discussion? And reach a consensus?

Please don't forget to tell us in your next blog if you're running for re-election in 2010.
We have to start processing your positions in that context.
03/24/09 @ 6:09 pm
"At 11.5% unemployment something needs to be done". Raising the Registry tax to keep an already bloated County budget, and overpaid administrators, is not my idea of doing something.

Advising anyone that they should spend with the optimism that they can eventually afford to pay for it, may work if you have the authority to tax, but it's not a good idea for the rest of us. Let's remember that's how we got into this mess in the first place.

But I suspect these middle schoolers had no clue what you were talking about. Come to think of it, neither do I.

In response to: Homeschool is Cool on Cape Cod
Can't let the homeschoolers take the MCAS. They might bring up the district's scores. And that wouldn't be fair to the other kiddies.

Amazing that this homeschooler went public. There is such antipathy* (homeschooled vocabulary word) for them by the public school districts. I'm sure there will be retribution* (that's another one.)

In my opinion, parents who homeschool should be given a stipend. After all, they're saving the taxpayers $8000 a year per student.

Just for kicks, can you imagine the next generation ever building smaller houses than the previous one?
Why does everyone insist on waxing nostalgic about "Olde Cape Cape" anyway. PSD is building what their new monied clients want and what the zoning and building codes allow. Now if you want a real page turner pick up the Cape Cod 5 Cents Savings Bank annual report. Not only does it have pictures of old houses, but old money too.

The town mothers are the real culprits here. There is real NIMBYism on the north side as well.
Bornstein bought the porperty to develop it. The village and town has thwarted him at every turn. So now they will proceed to the inevitable town buying the land to "protect" it from development.
The Town and State (thank you Mr. O'Leary) taxpayers will now pay dearly for the NIMBYism of a few. Not only will they have to come with $3-5M to buy the land, but will forgo the $25-40K a year in property taxes.

I do recall that the ones speaking "truth to power" in '02,'03,'04,'05,'06, ... were the supporters of Cape Wind. How things have changed. Now that the opposition is in the minority, they're the ones speaking the truth? Give me a break! The Alliance is still selling the same old lies, but the people aren't buying.
03/08/08 @ 10:18 pm
Everytime the Allaince speaks, the Cape Cod Chamber and the Cape Cod Times jump. When they parrot the Alliance lies, support for Cape Wind goes up. We couldn't have found better villains in central casting. Keep it up.

Nice picture of Ted and Hillary sailing on Nantucket Sound. Wonder if he dissed her over her support of Cape Wind?

There once was a lecher from Nantucket,
he met a girl from Long Island.
When she spurned his advances and
and supported Cape Wind's fate,
He cried, it's time for payback now and endorsed the other candidate.

In response to: Cape Cod RTA Budget Woes
Can someone do the math please? If the RTA is falling $1.5 million short, how many rides do they provide. Certainly not 1.5 million rides, so they would require an additional $1 per ride? I suspect that they provide closer to 150 thousand rides so that the subsidy is really $10 a ride!!!!
Wouldn't it be cheaper to pay for taxicab rides for everybody who needs one????
Why does everything that government touches have to turn into a jobs program.

I never complain about the traffic and congestion. It's the only thing that will prevent over-development.

The evacuation signs are a hoot. Everyone knows in a true emergency, n-o o-n-e i-s g-o-i-n-g a-n-y-w-h-e-r-e.

Don't know if Wilkerson is meeting with the Binghams, or any of the other Wampanoags for that matter, on her own intiative or at the behest of someone else. The Governor's? I doubt it. The Senator President (Terry Murray), maybe. Although Wilkerson has her own tribe to consider, she's probably looking for a piece of the action for herself.
