I think that "to die for" is from a Yiddish expression. Weird when you think about it~ a verb sandwiched between two prepositions. "To die" may form a gerund but if a preposition were supposed to follow a verb it would be called a 'postposition'. I wonder what brand of ten-gallon hat the Gipper favored? Might be a joke there~ I'll get back to you if I think of it...

Whoa this was a hot chapter! I went to art school in Brooklyn and for us young underground cartoonists, Russian-Jewish women were the sine qua non of hotness. Despite my goyishe punim most folks thought I was one of the Chosen because of the whole Susan Sontag thing... In the NEW YORKER finally in '03 Ms.Sontag revealed that her real name was Rosenblatt! Entering publishing in '57 at the prodigious age of 17 she thought people would laugh at a certain boborygmous onomatopoeia... her dad had left home when she was 11 and a Mr.Sontag was one of her mom's boyfriends. She thought it was a really kool name and nom-de-plumed it. It is a really kool name(from Reykjavik to Vienna) unfortunately Mr.Sontag's parents had gotten one of the 'n''s clipped off at Ellis Island, leading to certain difficulties for me as a Scots-Irish hillbilly with a Hessian-mercenary name breaking into the Manhattan illustration scene. Oh well. Got to meet Ms.S a coupla times and she was quite a beauty with that stylish skunk-streak in her brunette mane...

Buzz... I've been a leftie since 1967. I enjoyed Roger Ailes' work producing THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW but after that he went to work for Nixon, who gloated with J.Edgar Hoover over the killings at Kent State... I easily could've BEEN one of those kids. None of that means anything to you. You don't know the backstory of what you're involved in. Your fear that being exposed to your higher-ups... for being a trollish highfiver on some NewsBlog... might cause them to fire you? That was ludicrous. I still think they pay you ten bucks a Comment.

The rest of Mainstream Media had started to cave in the last days of August '02. For the next week into September you see the newly-minted phrase 'Were Kicked Out' popping up everywhere. NPR resisted to some degree, at least correcting NeoCon guests who used those Three Little Words. Until March 6th. Then Scott and Bob's heads became Embedded ... Read Morein the oil-rich sand of Iraq. I want testimony from those two on the precise phrasing of the orders that came down from upstairs... to begin lying to their listeners.

The Invasion was Thursday March 20 2003. Count back 2 weeks to the Friday I'm discussing, March 6th. That's when these ears heard Scott and Bob commit the war crime all morning. NPR'd been doing pretty well keeping things straight 'til that moment. Then it caved. Repeating the Roveism all morning that the UNSCOMers 'Were Kicked Out' 4 years earlier, an untruth, GAVE NPR's IMPRIMATUR to Bush to Bring It On. The coverage became gung-ho from then on. That is how NPR was complicit.

And the 'without the expense of a degree' really cuts to the chase. http://www.observer.com/2008/politics/vacuum-goes-manhattan-institute Fascinating quote from neocon David Frum, author of now-discredited Dubya hagiography THE RIGHT MAN... “Today’s Republican Party, we’re the party of non-poor white people without a college degree,” he said. “That is not a growing demographic. We have to make a really fateful strategic decision.” Hispanics and blacks probably weren’t coming back because of the party’s immigration policies and positions on spending, he said, so “the alternative is that we are going to college-educated voters.” That dawg ain't gonna hunt, bubba.

Capuano voted against the Patriot Act? Okay I will check his platform out~ that's major. But that accent of his... Patrick Kennedy in Rhode Island is getting body-checked by that local bishop, right? An altar-boy accent that thick really puts a guy at the Vatican's mercy. Sorry folks I grew up in Indiana and I find that Southie talk almost as scary as Lindsay Graham's South Carolina drawl. http://www.amazon.com/Eunuchs-Kingdom-Heaven-Sexuality-Catholic/dp/0140165002 bitter, we've discussed this before and its summed up well in Ute Ranke-Heineman's book. The skirts and celibacy of Catholic priests comes straight out of the need of the Antioch-based early church's need to supplant and coopt the Anatolian Cybele goddess-cult... disempowering women by creating a beyond-sex androgynous bureaucracy to give selected men 'moral superiority' over women... Capuano is playing the usual Roveian game here. Coakley is a vastly more-reliable potential champion of women's repro-rights than 'neighborhood-guy' Capuano.

Rumsfeld's original name for the Afghanistan invasion was "Infinite Justice", quickly changed to "Enduring Freedom" http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1563722.stm because for Muslims Allah is the judge of "infinite justice"... the same week that Dubya said, "This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while." If your beliefsystem is making you ill, then you might reconsider investing so much energy in maintaining the airtightness of said beliefsystem. However if your tiredness due to the maintenance of the airtightness of said beliefsystem causes an inability to continue trumpeting the correctness of said beliefsystem, and said beliefsystem is in disaccordance with my airtight beliefsystem then... that's one moment less of concomitent tiredness for Yours Truly. It's good for the self-esteem and Cape Cod being the social fishbowl it is, you may run into the folks you've heaped abuse upon and decide you actually like them... then you'd have to reel it in and do a lot of 'splainin'. The thing of Trolling is, that the very nature of the Blog Medium tempts you into certain behaviors that may not reflect your true character. "AMY GOODMAN: Noah Shachtman joins us here in our firehouse studio. He broke the story. He’s a contributing editor at Wired and editor of “Danger Room,” the magazine’s national security blog.
OK, lay it out for us, Noah. What did you find? NOAH SHACHTMAN: So, the CIA, in 1999, set up an investment arm called In-Q-Tel that sort of makes investments in technologies that the spy agencies would like to see grow. And their latest investment is in this company called Visible, which basically takes blog posts and takes Twitter updates and takes comments on YouTube videos and sort of sorts them out and decides which people have the most weight in the blogosphere, which people are the most influential, and also filters out, you know, certain key words, decides whether certain posts are hostile or positive. And it’s basically a way for them to sort of keep track on what’s going on in Twitter, on the blogs, etc., etc. JUAN GONZALEZ: And who does this firm normally supply this information to? NOAH SHACHTMAN: Usually to companies like Microsoft. Right now they’re tracking the buzz..." Ahem...

AMY GOODMAN: So, explain how Visible works. You talk about how it crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day... And then, how do people protect their privacy? NOAH SHACHTMAN: Well, first they protect their privacy by not tweeting or not blogging. I mean, that’s the way they would have to protect their privacy, or to do it within a closed password-protected system. If you leave it out there, not only is the government going to read it, but Microsoft and Google just signed deals with Twitter and Facebook yesterday, where all the—all your tweets and all your blog updates will be very easily searchable by either Microsoft’s Bing search engine or by Google. AMY GOODMAN: What’s the deal? NOAH SHACHTMAN: The deal is basically that all your Facebook updates will be sort of fed into Microsoft’s new search engine, and people will be able to see what you post on Facebook or Twitter, or what have you. JUAN GONZALEZ: And, of course, for the CIA, given the recent reports of how tweets and other social networking are used around the world to give advance notice on popular insurrections...

Thanks for asking, Richard. Andy Warhol did a great deal to break down the distinction between "highbrow" and "lowbrow". Our mutual adversary mocked me back in April because my drawings for King Features Syndicate's Betty Boop character are available to the masses at very affordable prices at K-Mart~ seeking to shame me by comparison to a certain "highbrow" Fascist Surrealist whose wife Gala so flooded the market with his prints at one point that they... almost... were affordable by the masses. I love being "Lowbrow"... it's unpretentious! My fans are lot more fun to hang out with than wealthy coffeetable-artbook and oilpainting collectors. I guess that opinion makes me... an elitist!

NEWSWEEK along with TIME was dreamed up by Skull&Bonesmen in the New Haven windowless bunker... to manufacture consent for the furtherance of Empire. Each major Empire has had its own state religion. Gott Mit Uns was imprinted on the beltbuckle of the Kaiser's troops. I'm not an atheist but when I hear anyone invoke the Almighty I know I'm in trouble. By the time that Walter takes his hand off the tiller of the pixelated charter boat we call CC2day, what would he most like to have seen it accomplish? Or is this more of a stay-in-the-now-and-have-fun enterprise? I would think that Media Consolidation would be seen(note my use of the passive voice)as one of the things most to be avoided. Murdoch owns FoxBoston. Murdoch owns the Cape Cod Times. It's Rupert's world(the Oceania region at least)~we only live in it. We risk getting lost in an enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend hall-of-mirrors... didn't the 'enemy' just die? Christy-as-governor might mean more influence for CC2day; but getting there! In Franco's Spain, Opus Dei was accused of being a "Jewish sect with links with the Freemasons".' http://www.paulrich.net/papers/opusdei.html Hey just a quick googling, but it would seem that OD was founded in 1928 in the image of Freemasonry with *almost* an opposite agenda... depends on which Level you're looking at... or from...

So, to answer Kelly's headline question, it 'happened to Obama' because Color For Change moved to defend his honor against Beck, not anticipating the Blowback against cofounder Jones; much like the CIA not anticipating the Blowback of training Osama. Fox/Newscorp/Murdoch has a helluva crack dirtdigging team, but they're hemorrhaging sponsors. Can we extrapolate from this the next reversal of fortune, and who'll be its recipient? Probably only with the wisdom of hindsight and our respective handy-dandy Airtight Belief System Reality Filters. Filter On!!

Good question, AP. I'm not in possession of that information. It's looking like Color For Change started a VERY successful sponsor-hassle campaign a few months back against Glenn Beck for calling Obama a 'Hater Of White People', and this motivated Beck and the Fox Echo Chamber to dig up old-time commie-dirt on CFC co-founder Van Jones, who'd by then Moved On Up to the East Coast. Where exactly the Blow-Back begins depends on your POV.

Osama bin Laden got his military training from the CIA as part of its anticommunist efforts to oust the Soviets from Afghanistan. There's no dispute on that. Van Jones got RED-BAITED. Spying was first choice, but Law Enforcement was an attractive alternative. A smart fella could do both!

Reporters At Murdoch Papers Accused of Hacking Into Cell Phone(from DEMOCRACY NOW!)
The Guardian newspaper reports Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. has paid out about $1.6 million to settle lawsuits that would have revealed that dozens of Murdoch’s reporters in Britain had worked with private investigators to spy on numerous public figures. Reporters at the News of the World and the Sun reportedly hacked into cellphones and accessed confidential personal data, including tax records, social security files, bank statements and itemized phone bills. The list of targeted individuals included politicians, sports stars and entertainers. British officials said 31 journalists working for the tabloid newspapers were involved in the scandal. (Not specific to anyone here)

HAIR was Forty Years Ago. Kelly's closed mind in his Lost Culture War makes him see a false dichotomy. The American music of the twentieth century is all of a piece... it varies in which root elements of its origins are emphasized in each particular instance but all root elements are always present. There was a big Swing revival in the 90s. termed Acid Jazz by some, that Mr.Kelly evidently missed completely. Was Mass Media Consolidation a phenomenon of Reagan-era origin? I like to blame stuff like this on the Gipper. A poster I spent a week on last year as a benefit for the WOMR Third Annual Night of Fleischer Animation got butchered by the not-giving-a-sh*t new staff at the Banner... since they had cut my name off in the butchering, they typed it in~ misspelled, relegating what remained of the poster to the ever-growing Google back alley devoted to the nonexistent 'Ned Sontag'.
When I called for a correction I was told, 'take that up with WOMR'. Hamilton Kahn had been canned just the week before, unbeknownst to me... he would've gotten the job done right. Hope nobody bails out Gatehouse and thus delays the picking up of the pieces. Aren't we by participating in its use saying that all aspirations by that community are bogus? Do we believe that? Who coined this term? (I'm thinking perhaps the departed Gadfly did.) Is 'Wamp' not an Ethnic Slur? Can we not spare the bandwidth to spell out 'Wampanoag'? Might we be really embarrassed someday, going back thru the Archives and realizing no one Said Anything? I feel the need at this juncture to Say Something.

I don't know if Commenters are still allowed to Comment on other Commenter's Comments. Enforcement of that New Rule has saved a lot of wasted bandwidth lately. Be it noted that lottabaloney's Comment is his fifth Comment ever. He expresses a desire to read my work, which would be pretty easy given that I've blogged here for a couple of years. "'What connection he can possibly intend between"Republican" and "Maverick" suggests either that he is himself a confirmed ideologue or just ignorant of history.'" WTF? Has lottabaloney ever heard of a gent named John McCain? It is because I am WELL-VERSED in history that I AM a confirmed ideologue. Lastly, Blogging IS Public Speaking. What's stale on the Podium is stale on the Monitor.

from Wikipedia:"In 2003, Pioneer partnered with Harvard University's Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston to conduct a two-year long research project on the housing market in Central and Eastern Massachusetts. In 2006, Pioneer and Rappaport released The Initiative on Local Housing Regulation. The initiative is comprised of a first-of-its-kind catalogue of local regulations in 187 communities with 50 miles of Boston. The accompanying analysis of these regulations determined that a broad range of municipal regulations, from minimum lot size requirements to wetlands protection standards, have had a dramatic impact on housing production in the last 15 years. The report demonstrates that local land-use regulations have produced a dramatic decline in new housing permits, thus prevening the market from responding to increases in demand and ultimately increasing prices. The Initiative on Local Housing is a landmark study that confirmed previous speculation and will influence public policy makers for years to come." It's ALL about the speculation. Drain the wetlands and build more houses.

Loved it, Richard. I've always had an instinctive loathing of golf. This being Earth Day indeed, you may want to include a factoid about the deletirious effect upon the atmosphere of the constant use of lawnmowers to maintain a plush playing surface for the elite- "A 2001 study showed that such a mower emits the same amount of pollution (emissions other than carbon dioxide) in one hour as driving a 1992 model car for 650 miles (1,050 km).[8] Another estimate puts the amount of pollution from a lawn mower at four times the amount from a car, per hour.[9] This is largely due to the lack of any emissions equipment on most lawn mowers; cars have had catalytic converters, fuel injection, and other emissions-control devices for decades, while most mowers have little more than a simple muffler (silencer) and carburetor. Their single-cylinder engines also need to run with a richer fuel-air mixture because of the irregular flow through the carburetor, leading to incomplete combustion.
Mowers also cause significant noise pollution and may cause hearing loss..."

Breast Men in general seem to be Team Players which explains the Hi5ing... but not the whole 'maverick' persona, except that nowadays it's fashionable for conformists to paradoxically deem themselves 'mavericks', in the mode of the Rebel Consumer. Murdoch for example has been from the get-go a purveyor of imperial pornography with an edge of sadism. Marilyn Chambers was good at repackaging herself for new markets, but we'd assume that as she hit 60 she was running out of options in the flesh trade...

Apr 13th, 2009 | STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Former Ohio congressman Bob Ney (nay) has started a new talk radio show, eight months after finishing his sentence in a public corruption scandal.

Ney's show debuted Monday afternoon on WVLY-AM 1370 in Wheeling, W.Va., which also serves eastern Ohio. He discussed the pirate hostage crisis, the economy and the Obamas' new dog.

In a video posted on the station's Web site, Ney says he expects some negative feedback from listeners because of his conviction in a congressional bribery case.

The six-term Republican resigned after acknowledging in a 2006 plea that he traded political favors for gifts and campaign donations arranged by lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his associates.

Ney was released in August from a Cincinnati halfway house.

Traffic-Rank or Roadkill? That'll endear you to the Management, Cap'n. CapeCodToday is more likely to be around in a year than the CCTimes is. If the CCTimes becomes online-only they still might be able to display the Comics page. If they're lucky.

Yes I listened to his words- he sounds like a resentful, entitled twit. The talk of 'punishment' bespeaks an emotional mindset that hit a speedbump before age ten. YouTube as a medium is unflattering to 'conservative' posturing.

Hey cru... Cheryl and I saw the ultrabizarro Swedish vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN at the Cape Cinema... you'd like that one, if i didn't mention it before. She also took me to the chickflick TWO LOVERS which was visually interesting but a little strained plotwise.

Noooooo Ms T-Two; the Times rewrites old articles researched and reported at the expense of righteous local weeklies and passes off the content as its own. Walter in his wisdom chose to rerun my blogpiece because it somehow became once more germane to the ongoing discussion... of what a disgrace the Times has become. The topic that's ALWAYS on-topic.

We've gotten a deflection from karent2; piggie has an extensive blog elsewhere to which he's directed us on several occasions and crusader's shared a lot of personal data with us, so... I'd think that karent2 being as obsessed as any of us with building a network of frenemies... would've known the difference. So we'll chalk it down to a non-denial denial.

Whoa so the Obama-scrubbing joke was inappropriate language? That was a hell of an image. Yipes Buzz I don't see a big profit for us on this enterprise. 25 bucks is like thumbnail-sketch territory... and your half's on spec...

Ummm... the Feminist Movement? Kelly, you're a guy. Your oatsowing days fade in the rearview. Mind your own business such as it is. Go dust off your framed autographed portrait of Barry Goldwater and relieve your urges such as they are. Let the young folk boogie-woogie. Rome never fell completely; it just relocated to the Potomac.

Ah yes Howard Hughes designed Jane Russell's cantilever bra using techniques he'd mastered working on the Spruce Goose. The two most prominent male founders of the Size Acceptance movement were also design-engineers... I should do a fresh blog-post about my current theories in Pneumaticism...

"WARNING!
Mark that a person, consulted about his body language, almost regularly gives way, even for an unambigous interpretation, in particular if it in some respect could shed a negative light over the person in question. It has been proved that even movements and gestures from subjects of an experiment, which during special conditions have been stimulated through artificial way, quickly finds a ”rational” explanation when the subjects are questioned about their acting. In general, people even want to explain body language with “hard cases”. If you stand with your hands in your pockets, then it is cold. If you stand with your hands at the sides, then it is comfortable. If you do a gesture toward the neck, then it itches, and so on."

Special Gestures~
A person passing his hand toward the mouth, eventually hiding the mouth, as he is pronouncing something, may be suspected of lying. The same gesture performed while he is silent may instead imply that he distrusts your discourse. Alternatively may the hand be passed toward the nose or the ear. However, to clearly scratch one´s nose, or at the eye, is more likely an act of a lost, physical circumstance....

Don't be disingenuous, Jeff. We've been following your posts here since you chose to begin blogging. Dubya propped up a very shaky economy after '01 with a trillion-dollar war-- a quick crack-fix that now leaves this society vastly sicker than before. That's socialism coming from the barrel of a gun!
