Someone commented somwewhere recently that reading the comments on media websites is -- much of the time -- like listening to the drunk on the next bar stool. petercohen is right that the 1st amendment wasn't written to protect that sort of behavior although, ironically, it does. Surely the editor of CCToday has seen more then his share of infantile and petulant inter-commentator feuding on this very site.

As Yogi Berra also said, "the game ain't over 'til it's over". Anyone who thinks he can predict where this thing is headed is suffering from a serious case of self-delusion.

No defender of political expediency I (well, most of the time, anyway), but did anyone actually read the letter and see that Kennedy's proposal specifically requires that the appointee recuse him/herself up front from running in the subsequent special election, thereby becoming a lame duck from the get-go.

In response to: The Dishonoring of America
Americans are nothing if not contentious, litigious, pugnacious and contrarian. Once this has all run its course, we will indeed have a healthcare bill. It will -- like all progressive legislation since TR -- move us at least a microstep closer to being the unstintingly generous America that veterans like Mr. Bartlett fought for and that most of us believe is possible.

In response to: 21st Century Cape Cod Tories sink to new depths
Only a hunch, but I suggest that it was less likely harrassing Greens who got Walter to rethink his position but, rather, journalistic colleagues who, fearing that he had been seduced into believing that Save the Sound was a genuine environmental organization, hastened to set him straight.

In response to: It will re-Kindle your love for reading
@Peter Cohen
Yr correct, Apple didn't announce it, but a lot of savvy industry observers think it's real, viz. this truncated Barron's item:
FOLLOWING REPORTS IN THE FINANCIAL TIMES last week that Apple is preparing a multimedia computer in the shape of a tablet with a 10-inch screen, computer-industry executives are waiting with bated breath for what may be a final design from Apple in the next six weeks, say analysts.

One veteran analyst who has seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple (ticker: AAPL) says the device could be announced in September for release in November.

Whatever the exact dates, the computer industry is so anxious to see what Apple introduces that it has held off on competing designs until Apple ...

In response to: It will re-Kindle your love for reading
In the category of "you ain't seen nothin' yet", Plastic Logic is coming out in 2010 with a color-compatible competitive product that, from what I've read to date, leaves Kindle in the dust in terms of tactility and hands-on user experience.
And, Apple sez it's coming up with one in the fall that delivers video as well.
Save your pennies, Walter.

In response to: Meservey's: a family restaurant with friendly prices
I regret that this is going to sound snarkier that intended, but food photography is a unique art form that, when attempted by the untrained, invariably produces results diametrically opposed to those intended. In sum, Walter, your words are far more flattering than your pictures. Shoot up the premises and the patrons to your heart's content, but lay off the food; it looks yucky.

In response to: It's the Chowdah and Clam Cakes Trail
I guess I'm missing something, but I've never found any evidence of a clam in Captain Frosty's clam cakes. Until now, I'd assumed they were some kind of Hush Puppy and I eat them only because they're not bad and they come free with their excellent chowder.

In response to: Why Deval Patrick should be nervous
Shouldda realized that this string, like so many, would inevitably morph into a hostile referendum on Deval's political acumen, or lack thereof. What I set out to say is that Christy's pump action reminds me of my dad, a natural born commercial sales manager, who believed so firmly in catering to his customer's needs and whims that he would never have let an opportunity like that go by. Point is, he was such a mensch that he'd have made a lousy politician.

If you want to complain to the town about this don't waste your time doing it via the comments box in the Town Manager's weekly email newsletter. In response to: Salazar pushes for wind energy and Cape Wind
Surely the stunningly lame Soundkeeper gambit was the moment when the Alliance jumped the shark. Even RFKJr must have sensed the smell of failure in the wind. Politics sure do make strange bedfellows, as CCT headlined on this issue many moons ago.

P.S. If they don't need the Mako any longer, I could use it.

02/12/09 @ 8:20 am
While everyone loves to read -- and is edified by -- a rave review, this one is suspiciously over the top. How, for example, can a Cowboy Steak have become "famous" in a mere two weeks? If it looks like hype and sounds like hype, our credence is sorely strained.

In response to: Circuit City won't occupy new Hyannis store
While I can't account for the apparent FOR SALE sign at the erstwhile Chili's, it was my understanding that the property was to remain "open space" --in the sense of scenic vista rather than a public park -- as part of the effort to upgrade the derelict appearance of this Barnstable Road "Gateway to Hyannis."

In response to: A Nation at Risk: 25 Years Later
Opinionator: The problem with some of those old homilies is that they make better bumper stickers than maxims to live by. If you don't occasionally stop to weigh the pig, you have no way of knowing whether your fattening regimen is actually working. The Reagan mantra about throwing money at problems not being a solution was a consequence of the LBJ Great Society programs which failed to achieve many of their worthy social goals because -- as usual -- the money wound up in the coffers of the usual suspects rather than being applied direcly to the problem. To extend your metaphor, it's the hogs that fatten at the public trough and their political abetters that are the real problem. 'Twas ever thus.

I WANT to like Sam Diego's, I really do; it's convenient with decent ambiance and an exceptionally pleasant & hardworking staff. But the food -- I must regretfully note -- is generic Tex-Mex, barely a notch above Taco Bell. I guess that's how they keep the lid on prices.

CCToday -- I would have expected(hoped) that you would rush to defend freedom of expression, but not by totally missing (or ignoring) my point which is that "our" Aaron is neither unique nor original and contributes nothing to the public dialog except "yet another" (my operative phrase)contentious voice. He DOES, in fact, "already exist" (to extend your metaphor) out there in the blogosphere, so we will not -- as you suggest -- "have to invent him".

08/28/07 @ 5:45 pm
I gather from what I've been reading that Peter Kenny is a controversial character with some abrasive personality issues (and -- I am constrained to add -- the single worst on-camera persona I've seen in my half century in the broadcasting industry.
NEVERTHELESS, the guy broke what is the story of the year on the Cape (with regional and even national impact), and no one is giving him credit except CapeCodToday and Media Nation (No offense Walter and Dan, but those two outlets together don't reach the audience of a single MSM outlet. If there are unsupported allegations on Peter's blog, so be it, that's the nature of blogdom; the reader either buys it or doesn't. It's not the responsibility of an aggregator to edit content except for expletives.

In response to: Broadcasting Local Election Returns
Does any Cape Cod radio broadcaster have a single reporter out on the street? Hourly news is just fine for routine day-to-day listening, especially with all the alternative news sources readily at hand, but, when there're critical ongoing stories like storms, floods, blackouts and elections, etc., radio has to step up to the plate and do what it was designed to do: move information instantaneously.

I'd welcoem a visit to the Cape from the FCC to determine if the stations are indeed meeting the public service
requirements of their licenses.

Monpon -- you're providing a real public service with yr gas price monitoring. Thank you! Just one suggestion: we all know by now that by going off Cape we can save some money, but for many, regularly adding all that xtra mileage to save a few cents doesn't make economic sense. I'd suggest that you concentrate yr efforts ON Cape. And again, tnx for keeping us informed.

Re Libby's observation about FRONTLINE's "Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero", I wondered as I watched it whether the program was actually as powerfully affecting as it semed to me at the time, or whether I was just emotionally vulnerable after all day exposure to 9/11 replays and reminiscences. Thank you Libby for validating my reaction to a program that should be seen by everyone.

Monponsett is absolutely right -- in principle -- about buying and shredding the veggies yourself, but when it comes to properly thin-slicing a head of cabbage and a bunch of carrots for slaw, it's no longer an "EZ" recipe, which kind of defeats the whole idea, no?
