Fair question! Libby just finished writing her second novel "Serious Fun with WHITE HOUSE SECRETS" and hasn't been able to cover anything at the Kennedy School of Government for ten months until yesterday. She is even handed and has written books about Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, and Barack Obama. She's an Independent. She did mention George Shultz in the Pelosi article. He was a fine Secretary of State.

What a great piece. Gay Talese wrote something similar for the NY Times recently and I much preferred this one with the pix. The grand kids will never forget this trip with Walter and Pat. By the way, Pat looks great and the kids are adorable!

In response to: New Homeless Camp in Downtown Hyannis
There is a new novel out, A SUMMER WITH SOCRATES by Parker Lloyd that deals with the homeless. All the people are real from Boston and Cambridge, but their names have been changed and they have been placed in Reno, where there is a big homeless population.
11/04/08 @ 7:59 am
Duffy Health in Hyannis also deals with the concerns of the homeless. A new novel A SUMMER WITH SOCRATES by Parker Lloyd presents real homeless people with different names from the Boston area, but relocates them in Reno.

In response to: Kennedy School Plays War Game over Oil
Bush has a geo-thermal ranch. If he had championed the environment, he'd be a hero. If he'd invited all the American automakers to the oval office and said "I want better gas mileage in American cars NOW!" He would be a hero. A candidate can inspire inventors to explore creative energy ideas.

Benazir and her husband came from very wealthy families and did not need to launder money. Their political opposition waged a smear campaign to run them out of office, which succeeded.

Emma Willard has never been about learning manners (that's up to parents). It's about expanding the mind and yes, that can take place anywhere in any school. I happened to have been on full scholarship there. The article wasn't about me, but reporting what happened at the Symposium.
Read Daniel Pink's book "The Whole New Mind." You'll find men and women aren't so different in that respect--perhaps women have a greater sense of intuition.
Sorry you were annoyed!

Great story. I like to go with my French friend to the lounge. Service is fantastic. I especially liked the history of Tennessee Williams and Neil Simon rewriting their plays in their suites! My daughter recently took her Girl Scout Troop there for tea, and they couldn't have been nicer to these young girls.

The beauty about America is the privilege of expressing opposing views. Whether it be radio, television, or newspapers, these communicators have an obligation to uphold this privilege. Wind and solar powers are there to be harnessed for our use. Wendy Williams and Bob Whitcomb are laying out facts for us to explore and discuss. Why should we be afraid to do this?

My brother designed a car that would run on only wind and solar power. THe oil and American auto companies told him to disappear. Only Toyota was willing to consider it.

She did say Americans became engaged over the rising gas prices and guzzling SUVs. She said that when Americans become engaged this way, things will change because people demand the change.

In response to: Christie Todd Whitman at Kennedy School
She was familiar with the topic. I think her frustration comes from her time as EPA chief when she was making progress and the White House rejected her forward moves. Look how moderate Bush was today over receiving the Study Report on Iraq. He even said that Republicans and Democrats must come together (incidentally Bush worked closely with Democrats in Texas when he was governor) THis is exactly what Whitman said Bush must do last night. I think you will see a shift in environment and Iraq in these two years because the Democrats are going to use them as political weapons for 2008.

Whitman was more animated over that question than any of the evening. In other words, why not explore the wind farm idea and see if it's viable. She was frustrated at rejecting an ideaz before investigating it.

Having lived in Africa for six years, my guess is that it takes several generations to train Africans as businessmen. In SOuth Africa, there are many successful entrepreneurs. In other African countries that is not the case. Also,African leaders, like many others, are seduced by power and money--as in Liberia. The new lady president of Liberia is an educated economist and has her country's welfare at heart rather than her own personal interests. For the most part, Africans have worked for whites and learning to run businesses takes years of experience. Hope this may answer your query in some measure.

Columnists have free rein to write anything unlike reporters who have to stick to the facts. Opinion journalism versus factual journalism. Both are acceptable. You know what you're getting from both.

TV reporter Karen Swensen replied to my query about 200mph winds. She said that before landfall, the "gusts" were 200 mph rather than "sustained winds." Once there was landfall, the gusts were 100 mph. So, thanks for keeping me on my mental toes!!!

I went back to my notes about the 200 mile winds. It came from the documentary, Flood of Tears, narrated ny Karen Swensen.
