wamp-pride and Deltaman (are you penobscot or passamaquoddy or Maliseet :-)

You both are very kind and very passionate folks. I can tell by your writings and feel that you are both leaders. It is not easy for my tribe abd we are trying to heal, recover, balance and unite. It is going to be a challenging road to get there, but we will. In the face of all of this mess...I believe that we will overcome. I have to be optomistic...no other way! The situation is real and does not feel good. This is a natural human feeling. I hope that non-tribal members will be compassionate about our situation and not throw stones at us. The biggest stones have already been thrown at the tribe and they have come from within and of course the media\Peter are ensuring that are noses get rubbed in it. Most of all it does hurt and does not feel good at all. What a mess. For all of the folks that do not like the tribe...please do not gloat too much! I am sure you hope this mess with sink the tribe. It won't! We wil walk through this valley of uncertainty\death and rise like the sun again!

Hi Ej. Thanks for taking the time to get to know and understand the tribe. Your words are interesting as most folks think natives have to be, look, sound and act a certain way. We are all unique; however it is the spirit that you fealt. The spirits are ancient ones. The spirit is the creator. The spirit is alive and well in Mashpee Wampanoags and in the land, trees, water, air, all four legged ones and in our hearts, mind body and soul! Thanks for sharing your experience with us and learning about us.

Nice words. Peace to you and yours!

So. It seems like things are quieting down a little. Positive and good things are happening; however does not sell news or attract people. I'd like to say that I like all of the bloggers passion and know that people do care about the tribe. Talking is one thing and doing is another. The legacy of my tribe will hopefully read "Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is successful at health care services and tribal members are healing and getting healthy, Children are going to very good schools and learning, tribal members are buying homes in Mashpee (taxes are high and cost of houses are high), we are self governing and our tribal business portfolio is diversified and wealth management is adopted by all members. Land is clean the water is healthy and the trees are growing. The four legged one's have a place to call home. Food can be grown on our land and pollutants from Otis air force base stop seeping into all of our Mashpee land and we can grow food and eat it and be healthy! Town selectman begin to respect the tribe and partner with us. Ahh utopia...I believe! I believe! I believe!

Hi Susan ;-) how are you today? I hope that all is well. You are so right and correct! I admire your knowledge and wisdom and look to follow your leadership! I should never remember the past so that the future does not repeat itself. Your so right...i watch too much judge Judy. You are so correct I should go to the opposition and clean their house and maybe they will support the tribe.

Thanks Judy and I will take your recommendations and comply. I apologize and will never do that again. You've made a difference in my life. Your right...I have a chip on my shoulder.

I need more of your insults and guidance. Thanks Judy for your wisdom. This will help my tribe advance. Your awesome! Most natives are hostile...remember...I guess you are right...I am hostile. I am waiting for more of your kind insults....more please.

Oh..Susan...I apologize. I did not close out with you appropriately. I want you to have a nice day! Too hostile...I'm sorry...please have a very nice day! You are the expert...yes you are! Susan rocks!

In response to: FBI looking for Glenn Marshall
Glenn has to manage his situation and it sounds like a handful. The fact of the matter is that Glenn did it to himself. The Tribe can not be held hostage to his actions and outcome. When the CIO of enron and CIOs of many large coporation acted unethically by cooking the financials and showing growth that was not real and inflating stocks was a bad thing; however these corporations moved on and continue to prosper and grow and did not stop and fail because the exec that acted illegally.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has over 12,000 years of existence, community, prosperity and overcoming the European imposed genocide that failed; because are still here. Now we are trying to practice a sovereign federal granted right and it is gaming. We will prevail and not held hostage to one man's lack of truth management. The Tribal council removed him and now in the process of electing a Vice Chairman. We are focused on integrity, transparency, love, respect and unity! Aho!

Bella

Are you from Rhode Island? I wasn't for sure if you were involved in the Haras and RI gaming situation. R.I. state was completely against Indian gaming and supported Twin Rivers. The Naragansetts were there first and had Federal soveregn rights; however they were blocked by state government; which supported the commercial gaming. Native...the original people of this land and trying to build ecomonic wealth and self governance through a Federal supported right is not welcomed by states. Natives just don't have support in most states. States fear Tribes becoming econmically independent. Wealth power gives tribes the ability to claim what was once theirs and it is called land.

On another note. Our chief was misquoted and does have his role as chief and is not leaving. Again, outsiders reporting on things that they don't know about. Chief Silent Drum is our chief and we love him! Please do not start creating lies about our chief...not nice. Please refrain...he is a great man!

The Challenge here is that my tribe has not had a voice in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. The media talks about our federal petition land suit for the past 33 years. We have trying to survive and gain our stewardship of the land back for a couple of hundred years. The state and government kept taking and we kept loosing. Now that there is barely any land available in Mashpee...we finally get federally recognized. While the recognition process was taking place the town and developers fanatically developed most and close all of the undeveloped land in Mashpee. They once said ok..tribe...we understand a lot of this land was taking based on aers-unknown, which was an evil tactic of taking our land and selling at tax sales. Here we are today with nothing concerning land, equality and the economic engine to power our goals. Marshall is gone; however his news seems to sell and is the focus. I do not agree with what Marshall did; however I can not allow the media...like thirsty snakes to ensure the Marshall era is the only story about my tribe.

Hi Susan. Thanks for your classification that my statements are hostile. I guess the honorable judge Susan has spoken. You might be able to get judge Judy's job! Obviously the truths hurts for you just like it hurts for my people. Now, I think you understand the plight of my people and being subjected to it today by judge's like yourself.

Can't we all just sing....a song that expresses a fair and level playing ground.

Blackcat I appreciate your comments and thank you. You sound like a very sensible person and I do appreciate your perspective.

Deltaman...I hear you. We will learn from all of this, take note, listen, plan, organize and ask questions. The tribe and non-tribal members will grow from this. We will walk efficiently and intelligently with the Creator and our ancestor in touch with our path! Aho!

Interesting for the Wampanoag Tribe. Interesting as there are people out there close to the source saying that the Governor is going to approve gaming in Mass and then some folks close to the governor say that he won't. His delay is around licensing and how to move forward. So I am not for sure who is accurate nor would I take a side until the governor has delivered his decision. Speculation is good food for thought, dialogue and opinions; however reality around the Governor's decision will come out in the near future; then it is nothing but the facts. We've heard quite a bit from the ney sayers; however have not heard from the supporters. Fox 25 reported that the Bay state polls for the possibility of gaming provided 58% support in favor of with a variance of plus or minus 4%. This is only one poll; however it voices the public support position. It is an interesting time in the Bay State and we have to be fact driven....nothing but the facts. The majority of the tribe is in favor of gaming and economic up-lift. Management of an enterprise; like gaming must be efficient!

Thanks Peter and I hope that your words are true to your heart! A test of time will tell as look forward to articles from you about the Mashpee's success. There is good and bad internal and external. The tribe has to be focused on due process, program management, effective reporting and effective communication. We are working to this. I apologize to deltaman and others that thought I was over the top, but when you have lived being native all of your life and learn from oral traditions positve and negative...you passion arises and some of the sensitive things that have plagued your people open wounds and expressions of distrust and painful history arise. So deltaman...I do understand the big picture and the circle, and within that cirlce their are so many opportunities to grow and manage. We look to partner with all people in evolving the quality of life. We are learning, watching, listening and focused execution. In general...I believe that all of this blogging is excellent and shows that quite a few folks are interested in the Tribe and the betterment of the Mashpee Wampanoag people

Peter is not a friend of the Tribe as we have no relationship with him. We have never met him nor has he asked to meet with us. His articles took us all by surprise. I am not for sure if his intent is to exploit the tribe based on our ex-chairman. Most of all, this type of stuff...National Enquirer style sells and surely will elevate his writing status....especially if the tribe is crushed....and this will never happen...then Peter has won and I'm sure will be a famous author. It is like the book about the Pequot's...without reservation....this book was not written by the tribe; however by someone that believes tribes should be extinct and if they have to move away to support families and then they have financial wealth to move back to their homelands. With Peter's editorial expertise...we need someone like him to research why the Mashpee's had to fight for so long to gain federal recognition and while that fight was going on, the town of Mashpee and developers worked very hard to develop as much land as they could to ensure that we would have nothing left. Help us Peter!
09/11/07 @ 6:15 pm
There is no agreement on that has been signed with the Tribal Council and Town of Mashpee. There has been discussion...and yes when Marshall was chairmain; however Marshall is gone and is not involved in any tribal decision. The tribe is what matters. The cape belong to us and was taken away by the Europeans\British\England. They tried to kill us off, change our identity and it did not work. Today, they are trying to stop us from land claims and, which the land was taken from my tribe illegally. Now we are in a position to look into the potential of getting land back. We are land based people and gaurdians of mother earth. It would be very nice if we could get some of our land back. Just like when the first settlers showed up and began all of their trickery and dishonesty. Now we are looking into possibilities. So now the Mashpee should not have anything? Peter are being for real? Interesting how history repeats itself! Get ready and enjoy the ride ;-) Peter Kenney will begin to say the Mashpee are wrong for looking into what is ours! It still exist after 420 years of hostility..wow!

Transparency is very important. One should be able A-S-K and G-E-T what they asked for. It is now a gentle balance of gaining the information that is being sought after, understand contracts and agreements on behalf of the Tribe...while ensuring that the tribe is successful at managing all sovereign rights. We are a sovereign nation! We have a tribal government that was in place and now a new Tribal federelly recognized government. This is a sign of the times where the entire tribe has to raise it's game around checks and balances, polcy and procedure and the most effective reporting that support key metrics around what the tribe wants to see and understand. Nation building is now the time as the Tribe\council must grow together. We have to move forward and work at a balance between fixing internal defects while ensuring the tribe is successful. We do not want to bring the tribe down to it's knees under the guise of capturing improprieties. Improprieties are not right or honest and if anything was done in the dark, the light of positive justice will be shined!

Good Morning All. I hope that all is well. My tribe is focused on continuous improvement and the betterment of the Mashpee Wampanoag people's health, spirituality, history, culture, langauge, land base, programs to grow our societal values and unity in the community! As we are a Native American Tribe we are educated, smart, unswearvingly focused on staying alive and ensuring that the 7 generations to come will have a place called home, never to be extinct and to always be a leader in the State of Massachusetss as a very successful and Healthy sovereign nation! And to this I say aho!

Economic development is plain and simple. The tribe year back; within the last 10 years agreed to implement gaming as a financial engine to power our nation towards goals such as implementing and growing Health program, housing program, education program, training and employment program. The list goes on; however the list of things to do is important for the Mashpee Wampanoag, just like the list of priorites for the state of Mass and the United states government.

There is a new chairman and it is Shawn Hendricks. I believe that he is off to a good start. We have Tribal Council that is focused on working towards our nation’s goals. There is Skepticism from some folks concerning change and government....this is natural; however we have to keep both hands on the handle bars, focus on the betterment of the tribe, not the destruction of the tribe. Voice our opinions based on issue, need or dialogue, which get's folks involved to look at solutions that best fit the tribe for cultural advancement, people advancement, education, health, economic development to benefit the entire tribe, housing (we really need more of this), land base and love for the tribe to sustain.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Summer Thing was a huge success. It brought young wamps together; which provided unit and a sense of pride. I urge and challenge all tribal members to unite. This is a calling to all tribal members...I URGE YOU to UNITE! Don't drink the negative kool aide. Be positive. Look at the defects in process and provide solution, manage it and measure it….tweak it. Keep open minds…..keep love in our hearts. We’ll make it! The outside world will not help us make it. The news papers will not help us make it. It is up to us to make it.
Can we begin to discuss forward advancement of the tribe? Marshall is gone. This is a new day. We have to focus on nation building. Airing all of the dirty laundry to the public, removing the entire council, stopping economic development and family splits seems to be the focus, current state and proposed future state. I disagree with all of this. Discussion is good and how we will learn from our mistakes and never let them happen again, while providing solution and action plans. The tribal council is the governing and nation leadership arm of the tribe. We have our chief and medicine man…they are very important to the balance of tradition and government. We are a tribe and we are alive.
Mwalim...is a very well spoken linguist! Good communication. Need to ensure that communication is focused on the forward advancement of the tribe. We can not empower negativity. It is all about mind over matter. Negativity doesn't matter so we don't mind it, manage or look for it. Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is alive and well. If we all agreed; then we would become a borg.."Resistance is Futile". I'm you Trekky's know what i am talking about!
