In response to: Single Parents part 2
Biology lesson from ez: "Single parents (sic) households aren't caused by sex, or even by bad men. They're caused by women".

By golly, it's the immaculate conception, redux.

Oh, by the way, I'm a bastard child myself. Never learned how to pole dance, never went to jail. Mow my own lawn, pay taxes just like the rest of certain self-righteous citizens on this blog.

In response to: Are we in Selma Alabama or Sandwich Massachusetts?
First, the Sandwich schools get a black eye for failing to protect a handicapped elementary school student from harassment. Now, this. What is going on here? Sandwich used to be one of the best systems around. Has a gang of rednecks moved into town?

In response to: Sandwich teacher criticized for doing her job
Sandwich schools in the news - sounds familiar. Isn't this the same town that got very recent notoriety for failing to discipline kids who picked on a disabled elementary school student?

I remember when Sandwich was one of the best school districts in Southeastern Mass. Right now, that seems a long, long time ago.

In response to: Single Parents part 1
I would "buy" the argument that single mothers are evil and married mothers are saints if it were true that being a good mother is the same thing as being sexually attractive enough to be a wife.

As we all know, though, that isn't the case.

So, I don't much agree with your premise which by the way you've failed to support with even a single objective, factual reference.

I've been gratified to see the decrease in the references to Reagan and the increase in references to Ike as this year's Republican icon.

Let's hope this trend continues.

In response to: Barack Obama win 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
If they hadn't done it already with the absurd selection of Al Gore, the Nobel committee has now totally blown their credibility.

As @johnleschen posted on Twitter this morning, "Peace" musts translate to "empty suit" in Norwegian.

Ironic that the prize was announced on the same day that the US bombed the moon.

In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
Yes, indeed, CapeConservative, let's bring back the old school ways.

In my day, we had the cloak room, ostensibly a place for hanging coats and storing boots (kids walked to school then, we took our chances with wandering pederasts), but more importantly, a private spot for teachers to "discipline" obdurate students, including those with learning disabilities. No spoiling of snot-nosed brats back in the 50's!

You nailed it, Mary, and good for you. The cop is remarkably talented, managing to violate the not only one set of the professor's constitutional rights (Mass.) but two (Federal as well).

In response to: Sales tax be damned
I don't understand how anyone can be surprised, angry, feeling betrayed, etc. by the mob on Beacon Hill.

I mean, c'mon, THREE consecutive Speakers under indictment?

Look at the constituency that elects these crooks over and over again: South Boston, the North End, etc.

Certainly, the majority of voters and residents in these areas are decent people, but isn't it a bit naive to assume that the criminal elements who operate their have no influence?

People who try to pry up the tonneau cover on my truck when it is clearly fastened - and who don't stop when I tell them to.

The low-rent, foul-talking slobs who crowd out the nice folks on the midway at the Barnstable County Fair.

Thoreau was fortunate in that he was able to walk freely and safely throughout the Cape without fear of being attacked by dogs or people. A pity that current nature-lovers can't enjoy same.

In response to: Recent Mashpee SPED bus incident shouldn't be swept aside
Having trouble understanding why a monitor - who knows the video camera is pointed RIGHT AT her or him - would discipline a child outside the bounds of the BIP agreement.

I am also of the belief that no one should be spit on in the course of doing an honest day's work - especially at a bus monitor's modest rate of pay.

In response to: MCAS-Recent News & Analysis
I like your idea of teaching basic survival skills. Shop and home ec classes should not only be restored but expanded to include plumbing, auto repair, use of power tools. Ah, but then there's the magic excuse that kills all incentive: liability.

As for your complaint about testing that is top-heavy in math and science: my granddaughter, who is in sixth grade, is just now learning about negative numbers. At her age, she should be studying pre-algebra topics, such as linear and quadratic equations. Public school for her is nothing but a gigantic waste of time; what a disgrace!
01/21/09 @ 7:36 pm
Right on ya, Monponsett, burnerman, Peter K. and others.

If anyone (sgu&me) doubts the Fitzgeralds, they should take the time to read the court documents, which also state that the school district treated the male 3rd grader "deferentially, and certainly more favorably than it treated the female minor plaintiff".

You will also note that the principal and school district refused the parents' other reasonable requests, like putting the perp on a different bus.

All in all, a shameful tale of incompetence and bias on the part of the Barnstable school district. I suppose it would be too much to ask for heads to roll. Oh, right, they probably all have tenure.

This article sticks out like a sore thumb because it doesn't come up to your usual high standards.

- "Leaving vehicle too warm up" - c'mon!
- "Pick-up Truck" (why capitalized?)
- "the thieves return" - the thieves' return? the thieves to return?
- "a couple jumps" - a couple of jumps?
- "comic chase" - this is not reporting, it's editorializing.

The success of this group in really identifying the specific needs of Cape Cod women will very much depend on who is appointed to serve. If it's the usual privileged, high-profile few from the various Chambers, non-profits and academia, then it will be yet another waste of time and resources.

It's always the same cast of characters that huddle among themselves to talk about solving the Cape's "problems".

Maybe if the community leaders were receptive to new people and new ideas, some solutions would arise.

I'm glad maverick left their gracious remarks, it takes the sting out of the earlier, mean-spirited comments.

Besides, if petercohen's family is anything like mine, his wife's chronic lateness is accepted with good grace by her friends and relatives as just one of an otherwise good person's minor quirks.

After all, no one's perfect.
