The Speaker's new found support of Casino gambling is the same as the Governor's. It accounts for the political realities in the Legislature. Each region of the state, (Boston, West and Southeast), would get a casino, otherwise no one gets a casino. The governor just got there alot quicker than the Speaker.

The East Hampton Star called it exactly right. The price of gas, a commodity, was orchastrated to rip off the American public. It could only have happened wiith the collusion of the White House. One last chance for their oil industry buddies to rack up obscene profits before the new Sheriff comes to town. Wasn't enough that the oil industry got tax credits for producing the oil and that OPEC gets cost plus 1000% to sell the stuff, they had to manipulate the market to make more? Where was George Bush. Cowaring in the corner probably. This was Dick Cheney's doing no doubt. Liars and theives both of them.
Same thing is going on with the Wall Street bail out. Last chance to reward their fraternity brothers' incompetant and illegal behaivior.

Commuter rail service works only if the travel time and/or cost is less than the alternative drive. Commuter rail from anywhere this side of the Canal is neither.

In response to: Palin:"John McCain Knows How to Win a War"
Thanks Ned, I was wondering that myself. Everytime I hear MacCain or Palin say McCain knows how to win a war, I want to ask not only which one, but how does he know?
No disrespect, but he sat the one he was in out, disregarding the fact that we lost that one. He has never been in charge of an army, or a war office, not even a congressional committee with oversight of a war.
And as far at the Iraq War goes, what does it mean to win? There is no winning this war. Better stick to winning the war on terror.

In response to: Shame on the Sparrow
My wife and I used to go to the Sparrow for coffee. When we had kids, we would go for ice cream and chocolate. We stopped going when the teenagers started hanging out.
If the Sparrrow doesn't do something their business will eventually go away. An ultrasound device seems to be decent attempt to control a problem. They could play classical music over loubspeakers. That would hurt the young ears almost as much.

You are obviously deluding yourself. Blue H called a press conference and WindStop just happened to attend? (Clean Power Now wasn't invited.)
Are we to beleive that Blue H thought to rent the JFK Museum
all by themselves? (Owned by a town and operated by a Chamber that both oppose Cape Wind.)
Or that the PR flack they hired just happens to oppose Cape Wind? (Why not hire a PR flack that supports Cape Wind?)
Let's assume that all that is true. Then these guys are dumber than we thought.

In response to: Know thy ...friends and enemies.
Far from being a "mature company with substantial global experience in offshore structures", best as anyone can tell, Blue H was formed in 2004 to "research" deep water technology. Blue H was "hired" to design a project off the coast of Italy, which in 2007 began "testing" their design concepts. That project has yet to produce any electricity.

Blue H is not and does not intend to be a developer of deep water wind farms.
At best Blue H will "consult" with a developer that will "build" the windfarm in federal waters off the coast of MA or RI, someday, if their technolgy is proven in some other non-US location first. Exactly why should we be jumping for joy?

Had Blue H approached any of the groups, like CLF, Greenpeace, or CPN, that support off-shore wind energy projects, like Cape Wind, they would have been treated with well deserved skepticism. Instead they accepted an invitation to participate in a stage-managed press conference with the Alliance and Windstop, that are not on record for supporting any currently proposed off-shore wind project.

In response to: Richardson to Address Climate Conference
Gov. Bill Richardson said that current plans for a proposed coal-fired power plant in the Four Corners area would be a step in the wrong direction.

According to an analysis by the state Environment Department, the Desert Rock Energy Project would harm air quality and scarce water resources, and exacerbate existing environmental problems, he said.

Richardson also complained that a draft environmental impact report did not adequately address some concerns the state Environment Department has outlined in comments to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Richardson said his administration will enter into formal discussions with the Navajo tribe to ensure the state’s concerns are considered.

“Each new conventional coal plant built without significant carbon dioxide controls is a step backwards and does not move us toward a future of more safe and efficient energy use,” said Richardson, who has been promoting renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gases in his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

And let's not forget Richard Egan, another prominent supporter of the Alliance to Save the Sound (ASS). The IRS is after him for another $13.6M in fines.
According to the Boston Business Journal, "The Internal Revenue Service has expanded allegations that billionaire EMC Corp. co-founder Richard Egan used sham partnerships to dodge tens of millions of dollars in taxes, according to federal court documents.
Late last year, the IRS demanded Egan, who also served as an ambassador to Ireland, pay an extra $13.6 million in taxes and penalties, on top of the $62 million in extra taxes and penalties already collected because of the tax shelter issue."

In response to: Delahunt flip flops over MMR wind farm
It would take three times as many wind turbines at MMR to generate the same amount of electricity that Cape Wind will in Nantucket Sound. Does anyone really think that the Congressman is advocating 390 wind mills at the base? And if his objection Cape Wind was radar interference, won't windmills at the base interfere with radar? Now he wants to fund a study for Tuckernuck Island? (off Nantucket) as an alternative sight for a wind farm.
Sounds like the real goal is anywhere but Horseshoe Shoals.

The answer to your question is obvious. Save the Sound was not created to ...save the sound. It was created to save the Alliance. They have been hiding behind this figleaf to give some justification to their otherwise NIMBY organization. The Waterkeepers organization has been lied to about their local chapter, much as the rest of us have been lied to about the Alliance.

Indignation is really one of the last vetiges of a scoundrel. Where is Peter Porcupine when you need him.
Nice try professor, you still own the reputation for the best polls money can buy.
Every bit of energy produced in this country is done privately and for profit. The more valuable the energy, the greater the profit. In Cape Wind's case we all collectively decided that wind energy is extremely valuable to us, so we are willing to pay for it with TAX CREDITS, if not direct subsidies. Cape Wind gets the credits if they produce the energy. The federal government gets the royalties and the ratepayers get the electricity.
What exactly is the problem with Cape Wind making money? The billionaires who oppose the project have made more than fair their share of profits from producing energy as well as their share of tax credits for investing in it. How else could they afford to pay for surveys of such dubious quality.

Very funny, residents of Chatham calling each other racists!
Charlie Rangel is right. It's bad enough that we export jobs to take advantage of slave labor in other countries. At least that way don't have to see it.

I'll go first, the Chatham Bars Inn. Which politicians support H2Bs? Bill Delahunt. Let's stop voting for them.

You're worrying about the wrong thing. Summer rentals are not inspected now. Are we only supposed to care about public health if we can tax it first?

Short answer, we collect the tax the same way we collect the rooms tax from motels now...we let the state do it. They keep their share and send us ours. Which is to say that there will be a big windfall for the state as well if we extend to houses, cottages, condos and timeshares.
04/30/07 @ 3:43 pm
You're barking up the wrong tree. An additional 1% rooms tax in Yarmouth would yeild about $200K. But extending the tax to rental cottages and houses would rake in $1 million.
Most people who visit the Cape today, stay in houses and cottages. They use the same public beaches and roads to get there. Why charge one group $10 million combined to stay in a motel room on Cape Cod and charge the other group nothing?

And by the way, just because someone can afford to pay a tax is not a justification to levy it. I'm sure you can afford a few hundred dollars more on your real estate tax bill.

It's pretty obvious that the Wampanoags will be looking for a location along Route 95 somewhere around Attleboro, i.e. between Boston and Providence. Isn't there an old horsetrack (trotters) in Plainville?

In response to: Reverse Mortgages
I am sick and tired of hearing how our older retired neighbors can't afford to pay their real estate taxes on a fixed income. The problem is that they have all their equity tied up in their homes. They spend all their income on perscription drugs and they plan to live forever.
Thank god for reverse mortgages. Not only will they become more common for responsible retirees, but us younger middle class working folks who have to pay those taxes are going to start insisting that the rest of them take out a reverse mortgage to pay their taxes. Or else they can just sell their houses and live off the cash. Why should we take out a second mortgage to pay for our kids education, just so they can leave their kids a million dollat house inheritance?

I appreciate smart politicians. Tim Murray was inclined to oppose Cape Wind last January, looking for a local advantage on Cape Cod while getting on the bandwagon with the State and regional leaders. He instead opted to wait and see. It became clear after the caucuses that opposing Cape Wind was not going to be helpful everywhere else in the State.
I give Murray credit for resisting; Kennedy, Delahunt, Reilly (at the time the presumptive favorite), O'Leary, (Terry)Murray, and various and sundry local pols.
