In response to: Wampanoag challenges Boston Globe Editorial
Hey, we slaughtered the Plains Indians, drove them off their land, and violated our own treaties with them. Now our governor (a black man, no less) calls efforts to respect the minority Wampanoag religion "ridiculous." Moshup was right.

In response to: Bay State Democrats hoisted on their own petard
How, exactly are they hoisted? Or are you just in love with the phrase? They changed the law to stop Romney, now they're changing it again to help Patrick. So what? Clinton reversed Bush #1, and Bush #2 reversed Clinton. Republicans ran Congress and changed all the laws they didn't like. Now the Democrats are returning the favor. There's no petard involved. It's a shame that the promising young hippie we saw pictured a couple of weeks ago turned into such a cantankerous old goat.

Mr. Bartlett is correct, of course. Right-wing crackpots scare the bejeezus out of old ladies who fear for their healthcare. But it's a funny to hear people who are on Social Security and Medicare rail against government programs.

I'm suing on behalf of potatoes. How would you like to be brutally skinned with a sharp blade, and your body thrown into boiling water? Then, we'll sue for the lobsters and clams. And then it's on to asparagus!

What colossal arrogance to suggest that voters in a democracy -- who select their presidents, governors, senators, congressmen, legislators, state treasurer, and state auditor (to cite a few examples) are not qualified to fill a pissant little job like town clerk. That assistant clerk should be fired for sheer stupidity and political incompetence.

Please, let's not have a multi-story parking garage in P'town! This town does a lot of awfully stupid things -- like allowing people to build restaurants and condos with no parking spaces, and letting the town hall fall down upon our ears before fixing it -- but urbanizing kills the "quaint fishing village" forever.

I'm delighted that the CCC is suing on Cape Wind, which has portrayed itself from the outset as some sort of environmental savior. That seems not the case, particularly with double-rate electricity rates and the private business takeover of public land. When Cape Wind found it would be forced to full disclosure, it bypassed the CCC, maybe improperly. Let's see what the SJC has to say. There's no hurry, you know -- this boondoggle is not going to have the slightest effect on global warming or gas prices. It will, however, make it sponsors extremely wealthy.

04/06/09 @ 8:55 am
People who gloat about the death of real journalism will be left with loudmouth talk show hosts and crazy bloggers who don't let facts get in the way of their opinions. You intellectual midgets can spout all you want about the "liberal rag " (a tired old quote from Howie Carr), but it's been the Globe that has kept Massachusetts politicians relatively honest all these years. Watn to see real corruption? Go to states without a strong independent newspaper -- anything south of the Mason/Dixon would do.

In response to: In Case You Missed It! "Tolls would never come down"
I still like the crazy scheme of charging tolls to cross the Sag and Bourne bridges. The idea is to have a camera take a photo of your license plate, some bureaucrat would analyze the photo and ask the Idaho (or whatever) vehicle registry who owns the car, then mail out a bill. If the the owner doesn't pay it, they'll presumably ask his home state to enforce it somehow. Of course, there will have to be an appeal mechanism for those who dispute the bill. The toll is $1; the processing will cost $3 at a minimum; and the tourist-hostile experience will drive wallets elsewhere. Excellent idea, worthy of Cape Cod politicians. Now, let's turn to public education...
03/10/09 @ 9:42 am
It's called wishful thinking. The headline is what the editor wishes she said. No sense letting facts get in the way.

I'm astonished that these school officials don't seem to care that this little girl will be in therapy for years, or that the perpetrator is on the road to becoming a sexual predator. Obviously, Barnstable voters need to do some housecleaning in the next election, and the new board needs to do some firing. Maybe a fat court judgement against the town will get the taxpayers' attention.

If the Cape selectmen didn't spend money like drunken sailors, there'd be no need for another tax. Clearly, Caroline Kennedy does not read the inane babblings on a Cape blog, so this "editorial" is merely another opportunity for you to spew anti-Kennedy bile for the enjoyment of your fawning fellow-haters. I srtopped giving to Project Bread when I discovered that they "re-gift" donations to other agencies, including some I don't want to help. That way you'll know your money went where you intended.

Manso's not a journalist by any sensible definition of the word. A pompous, crazy windbag, yes; a journalist, no. That ridiculous P'town book is far beyond the pale, and one thrashes in vain for a true word. I wouldn't waste a minute reading his spurting bile against Norman or Norris; he's just a sore loser. Still, he's not the only one asserting racism in the McCowen show trial, where there was more lying, doubletalk, and temporizing than at a weight loss competition. Happily, McCowen has a bulldog lawyer, so we shall see.

I'm sure all 23 people who read the Boston Herald concur in their latest political screed. That gang of tabloid screamers has destroyed the once proud Boston Herald name, and reduced Boston to a one-newspaper town. This is what happens when enraged ideologues take over a news operation.
10/29/08 @ 10:58 am
W.B. is correct about local coverage, but the trouble is that publishers think it's too expensive to pay reporters to actually cover local news. So Gatehouse papers like the Patriot Ledger fill their pages with free advice columns-- how to raise your kids, how to make cabbage soup, how to paint the kitchen - instead of running news. This cancer is spreading to papers like the Ptown Banner -- and it's going to get worse. Circulation cannot survive lack of news, and advertisers won't support a paper with falling circulation. It's a self-inflicted death spiral.
10/27/08 @ 10:20 am

In response to: Bitter on Cape Cod
Early this year, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute launched a $1 billion fundraising campaign, according to the charity, the largest in its history. Yet this charity, which includes the Jimmy Fund, has not presented its audited financial statements in a form that would allow the American Institute of Philanthopy to issue it a rating. According to Mary Rebecca Mix, Dana-Farber’s Manager of Regulatory Affairs, it has no plans to do so. What colossal arrogance.

In response to: County list confirms paintings ARE missing!
It seems to me that you should public any and all info you have on these artworks, including the list of all the artists and works mentioned in the 1941 news story. At least if the artist's name and/or painting's title is searchable on the internet, the thief (or "borrower") might have trouble selling it. My real fear is that some halfwit threw valuable art works into the dumpster.
02/19/08 @ 8:03 am
The stonewalling continues. A call to the Secretary of State's public records officer might help -- (s)he's in charge of "public records" law compliance, and can order the county to produce the inventory (which is, after all, a pubic record) -- or admit it doesn't exist!
02/16/08 @ 9:11 am
Glad the local weeklies didn't cut back, but the Patriot Ledger's coverage has been in the toilet for years, and their failing circulation reflects that. They don't bother with local coverage and instead fill the paper with wire stories and "advice" on how to raise your kids. Closing the once-excellent State House Bureau comes as no surprise.

Please do keep digging. The cavalier attitude of the county bureaucrats is not surprising, I guess, but is still outrageous. Wouldn't you think they'd be bored enough to take an interest in this mystery... unless, of course, they do know what really happened to the art...

In response to: Clinton wins Massachusetts, California and New York
This piece is a little over the top with that "Camelot" nonsense. Voters don't fall in line to anyone's picks - Kennedy, or Kerry, or whomever. I'm a Dem but voted for McCain to keep Romney from taking all the Mass delegates. Romney "won" the state, but McCain got 17 delegates to Romney's 21. I'm delighted to watch Romney go down the chute nationally after spending $50 million of the money he amassed by laying off working stiffs.
