ok - let's get real - the reason anyone was appointed is to get the healthcare issue straightened out. ordinarily, i would be opposed to appointing a replacement; however, healthcare is SUCH an important issue to get done, i'm willing to go along with this right now

sadly, i don't think that bringing all our troops home now is going to give the world a "permanent vacation from war."

In response to: How would Single Payer work for you?
worked 20 years for a major corporation - when we had to 'downsize', we couldn't just look at productivity of a person, we had to determine whether they would be badly impacted by losing (or having to pay cobra rates) for health insurance for a spouse receiving chemo treatments, for instance. our hands were tied, unless we just wanted to dump on employees who had spent their working lives with our company. - and now the insurance is becoming unaffordable for everyone, even the big companies. i have had several exchange students from single payer countries - they are aghast at our expensive and antiquated health system.

In response to: Female cyclist hit by car in Hyannis
one for the cyclists: ride on the driver's side of the road and WEAR A HELMET! we have many foreign workers who have no other way to get to work. - and judging from the traffic going into hyannis this afternoon, i'd MUCH rather i (and about 1,000 others) were on bikes instead! let's focus on making cycling a safe alternative transportation with education and bike lanes...

In response to: It will re-Kindle your love for reading
i have only 2 issues with kindle: i can't see how far to the end of a chapter when i am reading at bedtime, and i can't lend an outstanding book to a friend after reading. oh, and photos and illustrations are poor quality. when i finished 'three cups of tea', for instance, i still had to check the book out of the library to see all the maps...

but i LOVE LOVE LOVE it, especially when traveling, or when i am reading 'one-handed'.

In response to: Mary Jo Kopechne died 40 years ago today
hmmm- i never heard the 3-person theory. heard at one point that mary jo was pregnant - and i think people thought maybe teddy was trying to 'get rid' of her. i guess a lot of the info was obscured by the hoopla of the moon landing. i was in d.c. at the time and thought i was paying attention - but a 23-yr-old's attention span is shorter, i guess, than it would be now.

anyway, a truly sad story; however, i do think kennedy has spent the last 40 years trying to compensate - and a lot of what was reported was put together by his "handlers", something i am afraid celebs need to learn to balance. even 40 years younger, he should have had more sense, but it all seems somewhat less reprehensible if he didn't even know mary jo was in the car.

In response to: What are YOUR pet peeves?
people who are too lazy to put their shopping carts in the holding area after putting their groceries in their car and block a parking space - which an incoming driver cannot see until they are 3/4 into the space

you know, my mom and i had about 40 rough starter years - we were able to be friends for the last 10 years or so of her life - and i took care of her during her last months with cancer after my father had already died. i am so grateful for that time, and feel so bad for those daughters, especially, who never get the chance to reconcile with their moms. it's been 15 years since she died, and i still talk to her - altho there are still lots of questions i forgot to ask her before she left...

there are, of course, many lapsed catholics who have joined congregational or presbyterian or other protestant churches...

also, i remember reading that he did pay up the fraud insurance at the church. still a rat, but i find that (fact?) interesting...

In response to: Wonders of the Cape Cod Bike Trails 2
i have been biking by the transfer stations ever since there was a path there and have NEVER encountered the evil smell, altho sometimes i do when i am actually at the dump, dumping trash. the mound is fully covered, and the chatham trail is rife with wildflowers, a pond and an easy way to get into chatham village from points north and west, and easy access to the main trail in harwich. chatham has no monopoly on dog or horse droppings on the trail. i beg to differ with phantom cyclist. come visit chatham - we now have kiosks showing maps of the trail, and take-away tri-fold maps.!
