Peckham you and Cape Wind can dance around the subject all you like but to date they offer NO alternative site. And they are obligated to. Cape Wind says this is a good site but in terms of safety to the public, scenic views and the Nantuckets fragile ecosystem it is not. So just WHERE is that alternate. You know the second location on the list. Where is that?

Tim B. So do I but alas thigs are so divided... and purposely so. CW has at its head Jim Gordon, the king of spin, who uses his project as either you are for or against wind power. Never mind that many people would be for it if it were in a different location.

Solon, with all due respect you look through tainted Cape Wind glasses.
Your quote comes from Walter Cruikshank of the MMS, NOT the writer. Here it is in context.
"The Minerals Management Service... had no hand in the language that was written for Cape Wind. A top official at minerals management admitted in a recent e-mail that he was somewhat blindsided by it."
"The exemption from competitive bidding seems clear," wrote Walter Cruikshank, deputy director of the Minerals Management Service, responding to an inquiry from a legislative aide about the language in the bill. "MMS did not propose the language - it was shared with us by committee staff after they received it. I don't know who wrote it."
Mark Rogers lies when he says "The primary source for this article about Cape Wind was an unnamed, anonymous party."
The primary source for the article was taken from A chronology prepared by the Congressional Research Service

Barbara Hill, aren't you on the Board of Clean Power Now? Didn't you just write: "Also, there are no subsidies. All energy production receives some type of subsidy and if that subsidy wasn't available to energy companies we wouldn't be able to have our lights on or our regrigerators on or the computers on." Ellwood: Powerline injuries and deaths are HUGE. do check with the usfws on that one. And also know there is a working group with the power companies across the country in and attempt to do something about it. Over the years I have personally received hundreds of power line injured birds... many were dead from electrocution, many lost a wing to it being fried, many could never fly free again. Mass Audubon does not care for the birds directly... talk to someone that does. I told you where I got my information. From the Head of Safeguarding at the Ministry of Defence in the UK./ And do be aware that the FAA is now conducting their own studies and has put a wind farm on hold due to this new and vital information. I would suggest that YOU do your homework before you spout off nonsense.

It is not politicians as I take most of what they say with a grain of salt... especially those who are running for office. On the radar issue I am listening to the Ministry of Defence and have been in communication with them over the past few months. Here is a quote from the Head of Safeguarding, in his 4/12/06 letter to me "What Wing Commander Loveday meant was that while we are confident that solutions are possible we are looking to others to develop them. But I must make it absolutely clear that no satisfactory solutions exist at the moment so we see no reason to change our current policies and procedures". He put it front and center and he deserves a great deal of credit." completely disregards that wind power has been in this country for decades... way before Gordon got into the act. No stakeholders were interviewed for good reason. The reporter knows the sides of the issue as do we all... ad nauseum. What she did was to go to an independant source to get the facts which was the story.

Personally Barbara... what is fair to the public is the only fair thing that concerns me. Because the gun was jumped for what ever reason (and I do not believe for one second that CW didn't have a big hand in this jumping of the gun before regulations were in place) does not make it right to move ahead at the detriment of our country and its natural resources while ignoring vital information on safety, public rights etc. CW knew what the risks were but they went arrogantly ahead anyway. Jack,
Actually my so called 'glee' was about shining the light of truth on those so called backroom deals and finally seeing a story of balance.
This story was not about personalities or he said she said. It was about a chronology of events that clearly showed backroom deals on the part of those who cry now that it has happened to them particularly Domenici.
Frankly I loved the story for that reason.
And, I do not believe it is a reporters job to shine a flattering light on anyone. Also I really didn't see that unflattering light you protest so strongly with regards to Gordon. Do tell!
Is it that Jim Gordon and his people are offended by the record that doesn't show him as you and he would like... you know a humble self sacrificing savior of the planet that is being unfairly persectued by the rich? He is rich though, isn't he Jack? And he does stand to gain, a lot!
How could it have been presented any differently. The record is the record... all there in black and white for anyone to see.

What a joke. Domenici is a HYPOCRITE! But it is obvious that he has a lot invested in Cape Wind since....
"Last week Senator Domenici made headlines when he publicly blasted Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska for his amendment to a Coast Guard bill that would hand veto power over the Cape Wind project to the Massachusetts governor. Senator Domenici openly criticized Senator Stevens for introducing the amendment behind closed doors with no public debate.
But the ranking senator from New Mexico had done something quite similar last June when he inserted language into the Energy Policy Act that was a huge boost for developer Jim Gordon, who wants to build the nation's first offshore wind farm on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound. Exempting Cape Wind from public bidding requirements knocked down a high hurdle for Mr. Gordon and his project. Offshore energy leases with private companies are generally required to go out to bid."

Yes they are... but when it comes to man's creations and God's... many of us would choose to view God's. As I said before I am one of them. Wind turbine's are man's creations and symbols of our endless appetite for more, which is never enough. These things will never solve anything they will only add to the problem. "Wind Plan needs airing"
"Maybe resistance to constructing the nation's first offshore wind facility on Horseshoe Shoal is about more than the property values of folks lucky enough to own homes on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, or Cape Cod. Maybe it is also about whether a private, for-profit developer ought to be handed 24 square miles of publicly owned federal land without having to submit to a competitive bidding process. Maybe it is about whether Congress ought to devise clear rules for development of the ocean floor before, not after, entrepreneurs start erecting fields of wind turbines offshore.
Don't Jim Gordon, chief executive and president of Cape Wind, and his investors have more financial self-interest in pushing this project than Kennedy and Reilly have in killing it? The Kennedy compound is lovely, but the value of those whitewashed houses does not compare to the tens of millions that Cape Wind will reap if the wind energy facility is built."

Pilgrim... there are other values besides money and some how I think you know that. The problem in this country is the fact that the government has a huge conflict of interest when it comes to energy. The answer is simple... if we truly are in an energy crisis then mandate conservation and rally the people to help. But that doesn't boost the economy does it? And therein lies the rub. We do not need MORE we need LESS. Adding wind power to the mix is simply throwing more wood on the fire.

"While Cape Wind has targeted politics and well-funded opponents as the culprits, the real issue -- and villain -- is the utter recklessness of building a massive industrial-scale project across 24 square miles of Nantucket Sound. That's where Cape Wind wants to put 130 steel towers, a location where two ferry routes and the main shipping channel form the ''Nantucket Triangle." They could not have picked a worse location."

Chuck how do you feel about Cape Wind now that its back room deals have been brought to the public light as in:
"The hotly debated Cape Wind project - its backers now basking in the role of wounded underdog over a recent amendment to the U.S. Coast Guard authorization bill - was the direct beneficiary of a special interest provision slipped quietly into the federal Energy Policy Act before it was signed into law last year.
Carefully crafted and written in seamless legislative language, the provision exempted the Cape Wind project from competitive bidding requirements that would apply to all other projects like it, once the bill became law. The special interest language, which was added to the bill after it had been approved by the House but before it was voted on by the Senate, saw no public hearings and virtually no debate ..."
Will CPN continue on its mission for renewable energy without Cape Wind? Or is your org. a one project (Cape Wind) deal?

This isn't a fundamentalist religious war anon whoeveryouare. This isn't a war about alternative energy of which there are many answers or dependance on foreign oil or whether or not humans are the cause of global warming. This is a fight between the people with ONE private developer who wants a piece of the public common at no expense to him in an unacceptable location (for a long list of reasons not the least of which is public safety) for his industrial wind power plant. Why don't you ask him if it is worth it to him to move it to a more acceptable and safe location with your list of concerns and see what HE says. As to the energy crisis... we have the tools to deal with that. Just like people who spend themselves into debt... there are ways to recover. One is to go to the bank and borrow more and more... the other is to establish a budget, cut up the credit cards, cut back on expenses and either work more or change the lifestyle. The former only creates more debt, the latter solves the problem. Pretty simple stuff, really.

Global warming of the artificial kind is, perhaps, the epitome of marketing fear tactics. And what gets me is, it is based on human arrogance. We are causing it; we can stop it. GLOBAL warming. Unbelievable. And how do we stop it? Why, let's just stick a finger in the dam. Nah, that wouldn't sell anything, create jobs and make anyone rich... let's stop it by continuing to do what we do and add more problems to the environment that will need to be fixed... creating more jobs and more opportunities for people to make money. God forbid we should attmept to give anything up! On no, that would be much too much to ask (mandate)! We NEED the SUVs, we NEED to make waste, we NEED to dispose of everything we have and buy new, we NEED to BUY MORE. We NEED Wind Turbines now just because they are advertised on TV... just like children we NEED them. NEED and GREED and the feel good solution. Yup that's what the snake oil salesmen count on. Anonymous, that is just the kind of talk Cape Wind has been fostering through its mass marketing campaign. Those choices are simply not real. There are many ways to go with renewables and Cape Wind is not a do or die project. It positions itself that way. There are other sites off the Cape that would work like Davis Shoals for instance but compromise would not fit into Cape Wind's hype and so it refuses to do so. Making it a do or die situation, which it is not.

Barbara, I would be happy to pay for Peckham's ticket to see the Nantucket a la the Maverick. Perhaps he might then understand a little something about our Nantucket and how precious she is... and a nice ride in a dense fog might open his eyes and senses a bit too. I took the plane last weekend from Hyannis to Nantucket and back. And spoke with the pilots and a fisherman on board. They were adamantly opposed to Cape Wind.

Sorry Editor but I have to disagree. This kind of thing is distressing, to say the least. And especially here where freedom of speech is supposedly alive and well. And, I would not say this if it weren't true and I hadn't experienced it, along with at least four other people, myself. If you read my comment to Jack, above, you will see I didn't say Jack deleted anything just that he fostered censorship by pretending it wasn't going on. We all saw it with our own two eyes on the latest renewable energy post where comments upon comments of cape wind opponents were deleted, at least four of us had it done to our comments and there was no vulgarity or personal attack on anyone. And Peckham... well, as an avid Cape Wind supporter I would expect nothing less form you but pushing for more censorship.

Jack you want to talk about free speech? How about the deletion of comments here from those who are opposed to Cape Wind? Deletion to the point of closing down the ability to comment. But here is a case of the rules only applying to mortals of less impressive pedigree as in those of Cape Wind's opposition. While your comments and the comments of other proponents (even those who post with offensive vulgarity) left untouched. And more importantly, where you and your empty words on free speech are concerned, you pretend not to see what is going on, argue that it isn't and thus foster it. So Jack right here you are exposed as one who would restrict the free speech of others.
EDITOR'S NOTE:
Dona, as you well know this is the ONLY newspaper on Cape Cod where we NEVER delete comments unless they are vulgar or make personal attacks. Sometimes the web even gets jammed for a bit.
Jack can not delete or change comments on any blog here other than his own. Only the webmaster and CCToday editors can do that on our CapeBlogs.
Your comment above is untrue, and I suspect you know it.

As to visionaries Jack my point was that simply calling someone a visionary doesn't make them someone whose vision is a good thing for others... as in Jim Jones... who took babies and innocents along with him. And while we do not agree on Cape Wind Jack that doesn't make either one of us more RIGHT that the other. We disagree pure and simple. I know you would never admit it in a million years but there might just be some things we do agree upon... Cap't Jack for instance. And other people of passion and integrity. Barbara and All, if this were the right project in the right place people would be for it. But it isn't and they are not. Still Cape Wind, in its arrogance would call this, their attempt to steal the resources of the commonwealth, their right. Last time I looked they had no rights. Well I do not know what his motives are but the amendment will not allow him to take the teeth out of federal law, it only, as I said before, allows the States to tighten it. And as to navigational and radar problems existing now for the rest of the coast... there are presently no wind turbines plants on any of the east coast to interfer with navigation and radar. I commend Rep Young for attempting to halt Cape Wind from slip sliding through that loop hole they found. Now that, my friend, was stealth. So perhaps what goes round comes round... or maybe you do have to fight stealth with stealth. No matter what, Cape Wind is no innocent player in this game.

All part of the pollution pcture Jack. But there are controls for emissions from power plants... why aren't they being inforced and perfected? But, do you know of any documented cases of people or wildlife dying from power plant emissions? A sincere question Jack.

Please Jack, you are becoming the king of spin. Do you really think we know so little about pollution? I find it interesting that you ignore smoking, pesticides, rodenticides, PCBs. plastics, chlorinated hydrocarbons in our landfills, insecticides, herbicides, antibiotics in our foods, allergies etc etc. in your zealous quest to blame it all on the burning of fossil fuels. Give it a rest Jack and educate yourself about pollution in our environment.

Barbara, this "FPL, LLC, one of the largest owners of wind plants in the US, paid no income tax in 2002 or 2003, despite a record of over 2 billion in profits." is disgusting. And correct me if I am wrong but they have another 8 years of this free ride to billions upon billions in profits to go?

Jack you logic is pesky mostly because it is twisted. And so it really isn't logic at all. And no one that I can recall suggested deep water wind farms be built in a matter of months. In fact it is YOU are in the terrible rush for wind power. The rest of us are more patient when it comes to renewables and want to see good workable solutions... you know, the ones worth waiting for. Haste makes waste Jack. And we've had enough of that already. Radar is a good example of something that has to, by its very nature, be right, safe, sure and not experimental. As do enormous costly wind power plants.

"After a briefing on the report yesterday, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official rebuffed Massachusetts Audubon's tentative endorsement, calling it premature and unhelpful to the wind farm project's overall review.
''We're not on the same page,'' said Vernon Lang, supervisor of Fish and Wildlife's New England field office and the agency's lead official on the Cape Wind proposal.
''There's a major chasm between what we see as data gaps and what they see as data gaps,'' he said.

And yes, we have done our research and have come to entirely different conclusions. Go figure! Isn't that what debate is about? We are not attempting to change each other's minds cause that isn't going to happen. We are putting the information out there for other people to make theirs up.
But your attempt to degrade the opposition by saying we are close minded, while implying through a between the lines characterization of yourself ( simply for making that statement) as open-minded is all too obvious a ploy... people are wise to that!

The truth is we all agree that polluting out planet is wrong and needs to stop. What we don't agree upon is how to do it. Wind power does not work and it causes more harm in terms of environmental degradation and diverting precious funds from projects with real promise and mitigation of what we already have. It ADDS to the problem, it does not subtract. America has been a leader in the past and now it is a follower. And even worse a follower of a technology that is already proving not to work. Please do not tell me how many more of these monstrosities are being built and that this is a sign that it works. It isn't. It is a sign that the subsidies and financial incentives work (whether these things produce or not!!!) not the technology!

Not so Moses. This safety issue is not something created by anyone other than a completely unbiased study in Britian.
That it affects your point of view on one potential wind power plant pales in comparison to the safety of the American people.

"Your March 25 editorial “Bending the Wind” chooses its detail in such a discriminatory way that you have left your readers incapable of forming an intelligent assessment of the Cape Wind project proposed off the shores of Cape Cod. The Kennedys are the best known Cape Cod residents, but they are not the reason behind Congressman Don Young’s amendment to restrict these offshore wind turbines to beyond 1.5 miles of shipping channels. The two major ferry lines that carry over 3 million passengers a year to and from the mainland near to where these turbines would be located both oppose the project for safety reasons. The three regional airports that serve this population also oppose the project because these massive towers (426 feet high) are clearly a threat to aviation. The FAA has blocked other projects because of their interference with radar and current British studies of operational wind farms in the UK have now verified that radar interference for both vessels and aircraft is

Safety is my main concern. Safety for all beings be they man or bird or sea life.
To me it makes no sense to build industrial turbines at all. So you are asking the wrong person. But...
All of the servicing of these off-shore giants be they in deep water or not will be risky business for people.
And, I do find it interesting that you say in regards to safety:
"it would also be those on any disabled luxury liner or oil tanker in the vicinity that could slam into deep-water turbines. This can't happen on Horseshoe Shoal because it is a shoal -in other words, shallow - and any large vessel and many smaller ones would run aground first."
Which simply proves the wisdom of at least a 1.5 mile safety zone AND as to large vessels like, shall we say, oil tankers running aground... Wow Jack! Is that a safety risk you and others are willing to take just to have Cape Wind have its way with the Sound?!

What utter nonsense and hardly worth a headline. I can't imagine Don Young knows more about this area and its politics than he does his own. BUT as an American and an elected official I am sure the safety of the American people is of the utmost concern. And it is all to obvious that both the writer and the blogger could care less about that. It is about SAFETY. And hopefully the amendment will pass since to do otherwise is reckless and unpardonable should a tragedy occur.

Jack,
There are only 2 offshore wind farms in the entire world closer than 1.5 miles. Copenhagen , which was built on a former land fill in the harbor and Hoyle which is 1.3 miles. The Brits just rejected a 300 turbine plant know as the "London Array" because it was proposed inside the 1.5 mile safety zone.
If CW did not exist, you would not hear one complaint about 1.5 miles. It is common sense unlike what Cape Wind is using called dollar and cents!

GG the only reason Cape Wind says this is because Gordon looked out over the Sound and said I WANT that piece of it and is bound and determined to have it no matter what the cost to others. We are not fools.

AIX There is a difference between writing a story and referring to one. I wouldn't dream of taking credit for a story written by someone else which is why I answer you each and every time that I didn't write it. But do I stand by the validity of that story? You bet I do or I wouldn't have included it as a link to my blog nor would I have defended it as truthful. As to living with contradictions in my life? Peckham the government has the ability to make ONLY energy efficient light bulbs available as well as to stop all but energy efficient cars from being built. The government needs to be pushed to enforce exsiting emmission standards and to mandate stricter ones. IF there is a serious energy crisis and I believe there is then the only way to make the people know it is to show that it is being not only taken very seriously but we all need to take steps to help... this is a no brainer, isn't it?!

For starters 3% of our oil consumption is used in the generation of electricity. Most of our oil goes to transportation and heat not electric.
According to the EPA, if every American household replaced 5 of their current light bulbs with 5 compact fluorescent light bulbs, it would save as much energy as if we took 8 million cars of the roads.
Let's see on one hand, raping the Nantucket Sound for the Wind Industry would result in the equivalent of removing 150,000 cars off our roads; On the other, replacing 5 current light bulbs with 5 compact fluorescent light bulbs would be the equivalent of removing 8 million cars off our roads.
If we replace 5 light bulbs with 5 compact fluorescents we offset 53 times the amount of carbon dioxide a year in this country... that is 46,640,000 tons as compared to 880,000
The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that mitigation goals for reduction of CO2 can be met at a lower cost and to a greater degree by continuing improvements in general efficiency of buildings, manufacturing and transportation than by wind power.

We already know the damage this renewable will cause, the unreliability of its power and the potential dangers it poses so it seems the only logical thing is to either move it or to continue to find a solution that will work and do no further harm to an environment and ecosystem that is already delicate and under pressure. Above that I do not believe in a private corporation claiming public property as its own and forcing itself down the public's throat... especially when they use empty promises, no compromises for the sake of the community and every scare tactic, quick fix for all and other unscrupulous marketing ploys in their bag of tricks to do it. Cape Wind is an incredibly arrogant example of that.

There doesn't need to be another news piece about it Musashi to cooverate the story. the story was written my reputable reporters who risk losing their jobs for lying. So once again go to the source.. or ask Jack, again and again about the integrity of the reporters and their story. You can ask him on his REVO blog... I already know the answer so no reason to come back here. Please have some integrity and move along. You really are not appreciated nor are you wanted here.

PS Musashi. I apologize for calling you an idiot but I do not suffer fools gladly or for very long. And you said you were leaving. Please do so. I have already said my good byes to you and AIX. Ciao!

So you continue to accuse me and the reporters from the Times of lying? Why don't you read Jack's comments and than ask him again. Don't keep returning to me with your drivel and accusations go to the source and if not them then ask Jack who once worked at the Times and knows the reporters personally. Although he already answered the question... and I have answered it too many times to go there with you again. I guess the Editors will allow me to say this... You are an idiot!

Thank you Jack for standing up for the integrity of the reporters from the Times. And I agree with you, they do not have it in them to do something like that. Also it is good to know you also posted a story on the GE-DOE on your CPN website. So hopefully this will satisfy those who are calling the Times and me liars.
As to what you see as spin. We simply disagree what this can mean to Cape Cod. In my opinion, there is the European off shore experience to draw from Jack (and no one knows this better than Cape wind), so no need to reinvent the wheel here. This too comes from common sense.

i/'m... what it is relevant to is attacks on Maverick's character, life, work, point of view etc. simply because he is opposition to Cape Wind and has allowed us to know who he is. So yes, remain anonymous but realize that you are a nonentity as long as you hide behind your safe title.

Jack, since you worked for the Cape Cod Times and know the reporters tell us please, in your educated opinion did they fabricate this story?

KMA GE is partnering with the US DOE but this same technology is already under way in Europe. Nothing says that a deep water wind power plant would be built by GE or even use GE trubines. As to explaining myself.. I have no need to explain myself to people like you who can not hear.

AIX believe me I am not looking for anything for you. You can go straight to the source of the article for any needed extra sources and information. Your refusal to do so speaks volumes to your self imposed ignorance. Also, don't let the door hit you on the way out. But yes, please move on you have nothing to contribute or bring to the table. Grow up or at least pretend to be an adult.

SP I do not believe that the reporters from the Cape Cod Times fabricated that story. Do you? If so, then come right out and accuse them of it publicly and to their faces. But as to believing everything I read, the answer is no especially when it comes from people with no credibility who simply parrot back the Cape Wind party line...

The thing that gets me is that you pro Cape Wind people are just that... and that is what makes you so suspect. If you are as concerned as you say about renewable energy I would think you would be for the wind project that would supply energy in the best and most efficient way at the lowest cost to the people and the envrionment. But that isn't the case, is it? Here we have a story of what is at our door in terms of a much more advanced answer that should satisfy all and not only do you cling to Cape Wind as the only answer you actually call the story and this post lies. Unbelievable. And yes, pathetic. Do yourselves a favor and follow up with the reporters at the Cape Cod Times.

Really AIX this isn't name calling... just an observation and a suggestion to someone who has been, obviously, moving away from sobriety over the course of the night. And I am not the only one who has noticed it and called you on it.

Thanks for the quote KMA. I stand by it. GE is not a good guy in my eyes and they never will be. They are in it for the money as they always have been and just as Cape Wind is... there is no integrity or altruism going on with either of them. It is business as usual. You and others attempt to elevate Cape Wind and others involved in the wind power industry, not me. As I have said over and over again, I am against it. Period. Wind power is a high impact non resolution.

I don't need to repost anything, KMA. I have never endorsed GE. And this blog does not credit GE with anything. It simply reports on a 27 million dollar deal between GE and the USDOE for the development of deep water technology that would make Cape Wind's proposal for their industrial wind power plant in the Nantucket Sound obsolete.

Hey, KMA I am making no endorsement of GE whatsoever. Please quote where I have said they are a wonderful company with sincere objectives. In fact, to me, they are no more capable of integrity than Cape Wind.
