Way too many people on cell phones. We need a law with huge fines. Maybe the fines can go to pay for driver's ed for kids. The amazing thing is that insurance companies just don't seem to care... they just raise rates.

Oh yeah - and this is Eldred's shipping policy (remember this is summer) Is it possible that the courrier just picked it up for shipment and didn't communicate that to anyone? - in all cases the packing and shipping will be handled by an outside agent and arranged for by the purchaser. Eldreds uses the local UPS store or Pak Mail store. Eldred's will provide alternative shipping suggestions for items to large to be handled by these firms. Any other arrangements are the responsibility of the purchaser. Eldred's must be informed as to such arrangements. After payment purchases will not be kept in Eldred's possession pending delivery, for more than a week. The UPS store, Pak Mail Store or shipper of purchasers discretion will be responsible for removing them and storing them at the purchasers expense until shipment.

Ain't that the truth!

If there was one kid in class who was causing trouble everyone would laugh for a while but then start getting pissed at them for making us take the work we missed in class home as homework.

We had recess, every day, on a blacktop playground. We had time to go outside and play after school.

In kindergarten we walked to the other side of town to the fire station. I would estimate that to be 2 miles each way....
I got a F in 3rd grade. My mom asked the teacher why, she replied "She deserved it" End of discussion.

With the amount of homework they get, if we even remotely attempt to go out for dinner, an activity or anything for that matter on a school night, it throws everything out of kilter...

The kids will be doing homework into the night (granted they dawdle - some things never change)

They take a bus to school, go to school and sit all day, take a bus home, spend hours doing homework. And there's a weight problem? DUH

The good old days....

Did Mr. Johnson have a wallet on him? How could relatives be waiting on shore if they didn't report him as missing?
07/28/08 @ 7:14 am
They didn't have it when I read the article - maybe it was added later...It certainly didn't come in the Amber Alert e-mail I received...
07/27/08 @ 11:33 pm
Thanks Tim - I saw this alert on the WBZ site and on the TV and I've only seen a picture of this little girl here.

From the look on the kid's face, Book, he's learned his lesson. Now wouldn't it have been nice if sis gave him her towel? He looks kinda cold too...
07/23/08 @ 11:59 am
Not for nothing but you all sound like a bunch of whiny tourists. I really don't think those people really wanted to be in that accident and I don't think they are taking their time to specifically bother you. Talk to a good lawyer and find out all the stupid little details that will come into play in the case of either a lawsuit or money the insurance company doesn't want to put out. They have to be overly thorough in so many ways because their reports carry so much weight. Can't you just be grateful that the sucky traffic you are experiencing doesn't even compare?
07/16/08 @ 8:16 am
People get flown to Boston when CCH isn't equipped to give them the best care. A friend on mine's mother fell recently and just the way she fell she shattered her eye socket among other things. It's not always "just a simple fall".
07/14/08 @ 6:27 pm
Hmmm if there's a bloodied body and no foul play suspected my guess is that he just kinda died and then the crows had at him....
07/08/08 @ 5:10 pm
Bipr - just wanted you thank you again. After a little bit of complaining we got to Payomet on Monday - He loved it!! I don't know if I ever saw a bigger smile at the end - he actually said "It was fun" as opposed to a dreary "it was ok" . I like that there was only one girl and 4 other boys - I think we would have had different results if it was him and a bunch of girls :) He's even talking about signing up for the next session :)
07/06/08 @ 5:48 am
Maybe it's poor thinking on my part but doesn't just about everyone have a cell phone these days? Either in the time it took for this kid to break the window with the bat (please don't tell me this guy opened his window to talk to a kid raging at him) he could have called 911. But really tho - if you are that fanatic about your sports team where you would risk murder for them there's some serious issues going on in your life.

I heard what sounded like alot of sirens and a loud fast motorcycle in Eastham at about midnight. Was this something or just a mix of different things that happened at the same time?
07/03/08 @ 7:02 am
Fletcher - I hope you and your dog walk against the traffic so you can get out of the way if need be.
07/01/08 @ 8:20 am
Maybe that should be a condition of these folks coming here to work. A simple bike safety class. Is that too much to ask to have a class of about an hour to go over the basics?
07/01/08 @ 6:33 am
OMG the foreign bicyclists are worse this year then ever. I was coming down Rt 28 where it meets 6A in Orleans and a girl on a bike was standing across my lane. So I stopped. She just stared at me. then finally backed up about a foot. Then as I continued on on 6 in Eastham I was rounding an overgrown curve and who is coming straight at me in the 6 inch shoulder? Gonna be a bad year ....
06/28/08 @ 6:56 am
Thanks! Payomet looks like a perfect fit - acting really brings him out of his shell and he really likes it too :) I like that they have short sessions - didn't even know they existed!

It's a shame when big blue eyes go to waste like that :(
03/20/08 @ 6:06 am
I think that alcohol and drugs are the "glamour" accessory today that cigarettes were in the 40's and 50's and beyond. Alcohol is adverised with happy people partying and having a great time. Celebrities are always glamourizing drugs. We don't see cigarette commercials anymore. Why not? I'd rather have someone get behind the wheel of a car after they had a cigarette. As long as these things are the "in" thing and accepted (actions speak louder then words) kids will be doing them - to excess - because that's what kids do. Unfortunately these things also grab a quick hold and don't want to let go and that's when there's regrets. Regrets from the users, regrets from families, regrets from anyone who at one time valued this person as an important part of their life and now either has to give them up or babysit them. Yea glamorous....
03/19/08 @ 7:04 am
Do these other kids realize that they will have to go an extra day in the summer? Maybe they should emphasize that to the kids who don't vandalize and let the chip fall where they may...

Wow - what's up with all these "criminals" coming out of Brewster?
03/11/08 @ 6:18 pm
That guy drove right past me as I was waiting for the school bus. Looked more like someone who didn't know the cop was behind them as they were both going about 25 mph at the time. He was just looking straight ahead do di do di do. The only way I knew it was him they were after was that the cop didn't pass him....
03/06/08 @ 7:45 am
I asked at school what happened and they knew "nothing" about it. Basically I wanted to make sure my son wasn't at risk on his bus and was assured that there were no bus fights so....
03/05/08 @ 8:29 am
A couple of questions - is whoever taking the pics of these fires taking pictures of any crowds that may gather? I've heard that arsonists hang around. There might be a common person in these pics. Also when I log in why does it take me to an entirely different blog. Still heard nothing about the kid at EES....

Solon - same here. We walked ALOT :) One wage earner, one car, one piece of meat that provided for 4 different meals and my dad was in and out of the hospital frequently so any extra money was saved in the event of his early demise. My mom sewed, cooked just about everything from scratch (boy it was like pulling teeth to get a scooter pie!). Mom or I hung clothes on the line. I saved up for my very own black and white dial TV :) I am more lenient but do prefer to hang clothes (saves a bundle on electric) and although I don't get 4 meals out of one piece of meat I tried to limit the cost of dinner. Ok - a minute while I put on my bullet proof vest - I really do think that men should be out at work and the women should be home taking care of (redeeming myself here) the really hard work :) Definitely evolved from the 40's,50's 60's but if people aren't so vain that they have to one up their neighbor it could work...
09/26/07 @ 5:03 am
No solon not lack of parenting and I agree it's the parents fault when kids can't be trusted to know the difference between right and wrong. That's just a basic parental lesson. But when a parent or parents have to choose between supporting their family and staying home to give the kids the attention they need /deserve that's when the high cost of living comes into play.
09/25/07 @ 1:26 pm
Actually, Solon, the reality is that these parents have to work career oriented jobs or numerous jobs just to be able to live here. So as long as the cost of living and/or desire for all the unnecessary gadgets out there continues to skyrocket so will the crimes.

Wow some interesting news today! I think that guy in yarmouth can be used as the poster child against the high cost of cable - if it was cheaper he could have done that in the comfort of his living room. And I just love dumb criminals. "well I'll be leaving now but he's my license if you need to get in touch!" But on a more somber (cough cough) note - if he is part of a big crime ring and he was dumb enough to leave identification he'll probably be dead before he gets to the bridge :)

Diana - it's not the eating patterns it's the activity. I would love some suggestions on what to do with my 10 year old on the lower cape. There is no one his age for miles around and kicking him outside can only be so boring for him before he wants to come in. A bike ride may be able to happen on the weekend. I rarely buy "junk" food. I have to admit that I once - yes only once - said something that I will regret for my entire life even though I apologized profusely and my apology was accepted. It was in reference to the number of children I expected a person to stereotypically have. I thought it was a funny comment, he didn't and I think that's what made me realize that stereotipical jokes weren't always funny to all parties. I hate to say it but my mother, who taught me to be fair also taught me to differetiate (sp) I grew up in New Jersey where it was/is so diversified that I feel like I'm depriving my kids of having that in their life. They don't grow up with the words that I grew up with, I won't allow that to happen. It is sad tho because my 10 year old was watching a commercial with 2 asians and one had wider eyes and he commented that "aren't asians only supposed to marry asians?". I don't know where that came from but we had a nice talk about a Russian who married an Italian :) and how anyone can marry anyone as long as they take good care of each other. He was happy and relieved it seemed to hear that :)

Brackett Road at Rt. 6 is such a stupid intersection. If you are travelling along Rt 6 from Wellfleet to Orleans and stop at the red light you have a seperate green to make a left. If you are on Brackett going from the bay side to the ocean side you have to basically go on the other side of the road to continue on so anyone coming in the other direction who is turning on to Rt 6 towards Orleans plows into you just trying to see around anyone across from them who is making a left. Today was my special day to go around all the people who pulled halfway into the right lane because they wanted to exit where ever and make a left.....

Just a little insight , at least for NJ tourons since I was once one but I was nice when I came here :) In NJ the people going INTO the rotary (aka circle) have the right of way. It's funny. When I was a teen, of course there were no cell phones, we just went out. Found a pay phone if we needed to but really were into the fact that we were unreachable. We were out, on our own, doing our own thing, free. Looking for something to do? Ok - I really think that insurance companies need to get involved and do something about people talking on cell phones while driving. It's just going to end up costing ALL of us more bucks on our car insurance. You just can't do two things that take your undivided attention at the same time. Geez it's like those people I've been seeing who stop their car on Rt 6 in Eastham, get out, do something on the curbside and then casually get back in. Maybe terrorists found a way to put stupid gas in our air. Ok off my soapbox now :)

We have a very mellow existance before the summer hits - of course lately it includes saying goodbye to friends who can no longer afford to live here. We have lived here since '89 and remember when stores weren't open on Sunday. Alot of the charm has been replaced by the worship of the almighty dollar. Cottages we loved to look at being bought up, knocked down and replaced with a mansion that we know will only see life one or two weeks a year. It's disrepectful to the land itself. And then we get it thrown into our face how we wouldn't be able to live without tourism. Personally, hub is an EMT so if the tourists want to support him with OT it's gonna hurt! LOL. But there are different types of tourists and I try to teach my kids this - there are tourists - ones who come, gloat, litter, etc and there are guests - one who comes respects the people and the land and tries to brighten someone elses day instead of having the gimmees. Luckily most on my street are summer owners and guests.....

Sigh....and we can't even blame it on the tourists....

OMG - I am in such a state of OMG. Ok you start out by skim boarding at low tide at the waters edge OMG. Then you break your ankle. Then what? your friends leave you there to go get help? OMG And you can't brace yourself on them and hop back? OMG

Maybe they should start with requiring people over 65 to go to their testing accompanied so if they do not pass someone will be there to get them home mentally and physically. It is probably is devastating news but like we tell the teens "Driving is a privilege not a right"

Yes Tim - but I thought I'd check different browsers first before I wrote - On AOL it is over the print but on IE it's fine. Aol is really going downhill since they stopped charging. I guess I'll stick with IE. Thanks!

I was going to comment but the photo is over 1/2 of the story so I can't read the whole thing. But just in general if he had his eyes on the road (which I've heard through the grapevine is the way you are supposed to drive) she would not have had an accident that day and would have lived a - hopefully - long and full life. It was soooooo preventable it's sickening.....JMO

Are you talking about the photo of the accident from March? what browswe are you using...the photo seems fine here on both IE and firefox...

OUCH 54 - I hit the windshield when I was a new driver (no seatbelt). It hurt like %#@! and I got whiplash. I can't even imagine the pain (nor do I really want to) of hitting the winshield so hard it shatters.

07/24/07 @ 6:54 am
We were sitting on the porch last night. A kid kept going back and forth in front of the house on his bike. We live on a very quiet dirt road with all but 5 of the houses seasonal. I don't know who this kid is - probably a vacationer but he had my heart in my stomach a couple of times riding backwards on the handlebars, speeding by, etc.(We have 5 big boulders in front of the house) Of course, no helmet. Then I think one of his parents went speeding by and I was sure he was going to get hit. I said to hub that it sounded like they didn't "get him" so they were turning around and sure enough they were LOL. They didn't hit him but geez they didn't slow down either....

Well, I am an Aquarius :) I had my hair down to my knees when I was 6. I was slightly shorter back then :) I still insist my mom made me cut it and she always said it was my idea so for my own selfish needs I want to get it there again :) And beside the fact that I'm losing my hair from perms. I have alot of thin hair not thick like bitter. Wish I had thick hair...sigh....

Echo - Sure dinner sounds great - can I bring hub and the two kids? You're paying right? My one son is 6 ft tall and almost 16 and can really eat. It will be nice to keep some food in the house for a day! Thanks!!!

Hey - a thought.... The guy who was dragged "5:30 PM Friday afternoon on Chase's South Ocean Grove a middle-aged man attempted to slow down a silver SUV that was speeding along the narrow and hilly road of the cottage colony (above) near Old Wharf Road in Dennisport. Witnesses report that as the vehicle approached the man, he signaled for the driver to slow down. At that point, an occupant of the vehicle apparently reached out and grabbed the man."
The first car stolen - "stalling on the shoulder and destroying the right side of the Honda Pilot SUV." (In the pic it looks silver to me)and then the found car "found a brand new SUV belonging to a female who just moved from Carmel, Ca." (This also looks silver to me) Could this kid be partial to silver SUV's? Silly?

It says that the doors were locked but the keys were inside. She probably had a set of buttons on the door that the code unlocks it. Sounds like the same kid who did the other one - same type of vehicle isn't it?

Or New Jersey, or New York, or Connecticut or Rhode Island....
07/21/07 @ 1:33 pm
Think about it deepbluesea. How close was this guy that the driver - as he was speeding by - could grab this guy's arm. What the driver did was wrong but what was accomplished by the injured him taking the law into his own hands? He went to the hospital and no one got the plate number. Does that make fifty four a person who condones such a hateful and murderous act as you put it? Sounds to me like a person who would rather not risk traumatizing their kid (what if that person in the car was a hot head and came after anyone in sight with a bat?) and would utilize the police.
07/20/07 @ 6:38 am
Crusader - I have a question (not an attack on your thoughts!! :). I know drugs and crime are all over the Cape but how can you say unemployment is the root? I live in Eastham and would have no problem finding work in the Hyannis area but have a problem finding something local. So shouldn't the worst of it be down our end?

And I learned, from someone being hit by a car around here years ago, that when walking you walk against the traffic so you can see when someone is going to hit you and you can get out of the way and when biking you bike with the traffic. When we first moved here in 1989 and took whatever test it was to get a Mass license I'll never forget that one of the multiple choice questions was "Seatbelts are used for..." and one of the choices was "to hold your groceries in" It was funny at the time but lately I have to wonder how many people picked that answer...Last night I dreamt of people going in the rotary the wrong way....

Did the puritanical social mores of our parents do us a disservice or have we,done a disservice to our children....
Hmmmmm Possibly. I grew up in New Jersey so it was the norm to play on tar playgrounds and get scraped up. I disappeared for hours with no way for my mom to contact me (and visa versa). I ran behind the fogging truck. I rode my bicycle without a helment and rode in the car without a seatbelt. I don't see my kids missing the stuff that I did when I was a kid (they even kinda think the chances we took were just dumb!)and and they seem content enough. I don't see them at a disadvantage socially just that it is coming in a different form, more mature perhaps? They still manage to get scraped up :) They have far reaching "friends" - now with video games they can be anywhere in the world. I had a pen pal in Korea growing up and it was the coolest thing for me. There is not so much a generational split in our family as in my "seen and not heard" childhood. My kids are respected more as people with thoughts and ideas that may just be right.I think they're doing ok :)
02/14/07 @ 8:13 am
Thanks for that story! Felt like home except that my parents are both gone :( We called it supper back then and now in my house you will hear "Suppppppertime!" yelled :) Of course, we are on the same page with the teen (15) son. I think that teen-age stage finally hit him - the bottomless pit stage because he polished off 2 huge burgers and 2 hot dogs and was still hungry - yikes - he's 6 feet already how much taller is he going to get??? anyway - thanks - I needed that smile this morning :)

Wow Capemom you sound angry too. Yes coming up with $500.00 UNEXPECTEDLY right after Christmas is a stretch. I didn't say I couldn't do it I am just angry at the companies pulling out after they collect all our money but before they might have to give some back. You say - Insurance is a business. A well-run business is "greedy and selfish" by definition.I would like to see you go into a store, order and pay for something and be handed a letter saying "You no longer fit the description of who we can have as a customer" You would leave and say "Wow that's a great business!" I'd like to see that!
02/12/07 @ 5:27 am
No - what I'm saying is to pay into something for so many years, trusting that they will be there for us when we need them and have them just basically abandon us because we might need them is criminal. How can you justify taking thousands of dollars from people who are looking at their insurance as well, insurance? A bill that really stinks having but is a bit eased by the fact that you're paying into something that may benefit you in the long run. A company that you chose, a company that you trust in enough to stick with for years and years. I'm not talking the agents I'm talking the companies themselves. I realize that my new insurance will be there for me if I should need it but it just really aggrevates me that all these insurance companies are pulling out of the cape because something "might" happen, and taking all the money we paid into it and never needed, with them. What's next? What else "might" happen?
02/11/07 @ 8:37 am
It's absolutely absurd! We received the noticed in the mail 2 days before Christmas without even so much as a heads up from our agent. Now we have a new agent, new insurance, and a $500.00 initial payment we had to come up with in a matter of weeks instead of our typical ongoing low payment. We were with that other company a long long time and even though we filed little to no claims we considered our insurance almost a savings plan of sorts that we "knew" we could depend on if we really needed it. To have them just take our money and run is criminal. To cancel people just because something might happen is stupid and immature for an insurance company to even consider. To pick and choose your customers on the fact that they will never need help from you is just greedy and selfish and not appropriate behavior from a company that deals in insurance. If they can't stand the heat they should get out of the kitchen.....

Geez I started at the bottom and thought - oh no - not another Christa/murder blog and then scrolled up to find out it was about birds!! Can we keep it birds please???
Anyway I was outside under the bird feeders and realized how much a cat's purring sounds like the wings of a small bird in flight. And I know that cackle too and wonder if the sounds that cats make are to somewhat camoflage (sp) them in their "hunt". My (house)cat only cackles when he sees crows....Thanks for the walnut tip - I'm going to try that especially since our squirrel spinner needs recharging!

I don't know what the problem with this corner is. I come from the bayside to my store just about every day and people coming from the oceanside and turning toward Orleans can look right at me, stop for a second and them proceed and if I don't speed up they'd probably be right into my side. Why can't there be a delayed light light like the one on Rt. 6 coming from Wellfleet so people can turn safely?

I think your dad has graduated to "artist". My thought is that a crafter is constantly learning and improving and an artist has reached the level of talent that takes years and years to achieve. Although some people get there sooner and some later, there's alot of learning ,listening and improving that takes place along the way

I know what you mean! I own a small craft store in North Eastham. I had owned it from 2002 - 2004 and purchased it back Sept 2006. It is very hard to just get people to know I am there. I sent "$10.00 free" coupons to the schools - not a soul came in with one. I wanted to advertise through the school but they said I couldn't but we keep getting ads for the gym. I'm really not getting it. I'm trying to save people a trip to Hyannis but even after 4 years some locals don't know the store even exists! I'm going to take a class at Nauset on how to market on Cape Cod and hope that helps. it's going to be a loooong winter
