This reminds me of the witch hunt against one of my high school teachers back in the 70's. The man taught us a course on "Comparative Political Systems" which included a unit on propaganda. To compare what the "commies" were broadcasting, he played us recordings of both Radio Free Europe newscasts and also English language broadcasts from Radio Moscow.

We followed with some great exercises in how to decipher the truth, evaluate sources' credibility...etc.

For his trouble this teacher ended up with the superintendent sitting in our class to make sure he wasn't teaching us Communism.

From that day forward the school administration, driven by a couple of moon-bat parents, maintained a campaign to remove this teacher. The poor man finally resigned, much to the detriment of his students.

Radio Moscow did not make me a Communist any more than seeing a human embryo will make these kids into abortionists. We hope the Sandwich school committee stands behind their professional staff and defends them from this new generation of moon-bat parents.

I just looked up the MCAS scores for the Forestdale School. According to one press report, it appears they advanced this year to a point where they were removed from the "needs improvement" list.

Obviously what they are doing in this school works to the benefit of the students. The public should leave the teachers to their work and thank them for their efforts.

When I was a fifth grader that would have been a darned interesting lesson. We should be praising this teacher for a very creative learning experience!

Heck, kids see far worse than this on any of the CSI shows on network television.

The superintendent and school committee should offer this teacher their unequivocal support. Parents please call the school committee members with your statements of support.

Perhaps CCToday could post a list of all Sandwich school committee members' contact information to facilitate this.

In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
A retired elementary school teacher friend of mine, aged approximately 70, volunteered in a local school a few years back. She was tutoring third and fourth graders in math.

My friend was surprised when she was informed that she wasn't supposed to tell kids their answer was "wrong".

In mathematics an answer is right or wrong - it's not a "good try", nor do you sit there and rock the child while he sucks his thumb. It's wrong, you help him obtain the correct answer and then you move on.

Apparently the kids in that school must have needed counseling if they missed a question on a test. Pop quizzes are probably out of the question because they're too traumatic.

capecodemail - Clearly, you did not attend a rural school in the 1960's. All of the teachers hit the kids with rulers or worse. I hear the parochial schools were even more severe.

When my parents attended school in the 30's and 40's it was much the same. This kinder-gentler schooling is a very recent development. Fuctional illiteracy amongst public school students in America is also a very recent development. Is there a correlation between the two?

In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
cantankerous - The kids learned to read, write and cipher back then.

In second grade, I remember our teacher playing "store" with us so we could learn to make change. One would sit across the table and the teacher would "purchase" items from us. We had to add up the total, collect her money and give her back change. Any mistake resulted in an immediate rap on the knuckles with her ever-present ruler.

Nobody died from her ruler strikes but we sure paid attention in class!

Our current educational system is raising generations of illiterate sissies. Surely we can do as well as they did in the 50's and 60's without going overboard.

There are no more wandering pederasts today than there were in the 1950's. It wouldn't kill the kids to walk .8 miles to school like we did. When I was in school we still had neighborhood schools and most kids walked.

In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
Folks need to stop deluding themselves that all children can learn and master the same skills. This is one of the flaws in the current NCLB law that now has special ed students dragging down the AYP in districts all over the country.

When our school districts close schools, lay off teachers and increase class sizes... does the special ed budget receive the same percentage of cuts?

Somewhere we have had a disconnect in education. When most of us was growing up, if a child needed extra help in math (for example) either the teacher would work with him after school or the school would assign him a peer tutor. Now I hear that this same child would be tossed into the special ed "system", put on an IEP...etc. It seems like the special ed programs are quite self-perpetuating.

I know of many schools around the country where 40% of the student body is on an IEP. Does this mean that the gene pool has deteriorated in the past forty years or does it mean that the special ed careerists have found a way to grab more and more money with each succeeding year.

In response to: The Dishonoring of America
Since Mr. Bartlett played the Nazi card, here is something several people sent me over the past few weeks:

Who Am I?

I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country. I was not his only child. He fathered several children with several women.

I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me. My mother died at an early age from cancer.

Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.

I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.

I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them..

That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.

I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s. They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything. That reinforced my conceit.

I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.

I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego.

At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country.

I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess. It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.

I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people.

I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.

I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope' , together we could change our country and the world.

So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities" like the Jews. My true views were not widely known and I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.

I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with.

I'm glad they didn't. Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

*Who am I? *
I am ADOLF HITLER

WHO WERE YOU THINKING OF? Scary isn't it?

I have used Kindles ever since they came out. Most of my periodicals come on Kindle now and virtually all of my books.

Wally is right. Amazon.com's customer service for Kindle is absolutely outstanding. When I upgrade to Kindle 2 I gave my original Kindle to a colleague. Amazon got on the phone with us and walked us through the transfer to my new Kindle and the de-registration of the old one. Then they took my colleague through the registration of the old one to his account.

The battery life on Kindle 2 is far superior to that of the first Kindle. The multi-function toggle mouse is a big improvement over the thumbwheel on the old one.

I find that keeping my Kindle in its cover helps to minimize the risk of damage.

There have been many occasions over the years when someone accidentally sets off the alarm at my home or office. If the police are summoned before we have a chance to call the alarm company, they are obligated to show up.

If the officer on the scene does not know one of us personally, he has always asked for ID. A couple of times I have even received a phone call to the effect of, "Does so-and-so belong in your house?"

We have never acted out with the police and (just like awayfromthebay) did not get arrested, either. True that Cape Cod is not Cambridge, but this sounded like a perfectly ordinary police call that went wrong when Prof. Gates started acting out.

The media coverage of the past few days would make you think a President had died.

Jacko's death knocked Farrah Fawcett's passing right off the airwaves. That poor woman showed a dignity and grace that would make anyone proud.

May we please keep things in perspective? Yesterday I heard Al Sharpton say something about Michael Jackson having made Tiger Woods and Barack Obama's ascendancy possible.

Not that I have much use for Mr. Obama, but I think even he might admit that M.J. had little to do with the hard work that earned Obama the presidency. As far as Tiger is concerned, I'm pretty sure it was his mastery of the game that got him where he is today.

Michael Jackson became a sad, disturbing spectre in his final years. The man was an arguably great entertainer but that's where this nonsense should stop.

Deval served in the Clinton administration and they supported his campaign here in Massachusetts. To return their numerous favors, Deval endorsed Obama right out of the gate, pushing aside the loyalty that the Clinton's rightfully expected from someone they supported.

Yes, Obama won the nomination - but look at those with who he has surrounded himself. Today's Cape Cod Times published the cost of this rescue at $80,000.

If this were a normal rescue at sea I wouldn't have an issue with the cost. My concern is that this was a fairly high-profile, corporately sponsored project. Shouldn't such an effort take responsibility for its own safety?

If you stage a concert the town expects you to provide security and to pay for traffic control. If a contractor is doing road work, they pay for traffic details. Why then would an inherently dangerous publicity project at sea not be required to provide for the safety of their people?

Could a future venture such as this be required to have a "tender" vessel following the rower, ready to step in if he gets into trouble?

Perhaps some of our hard-working people in Congress should introduce a bill requiring commercial stunt-stagers like this to guarantee the cost of their rescue or to bring appropriate support vessels with them so that our Coast Guard isn't require to fish men like Girard out of the water when their publicity stunts fail.

Well at least Michelle gave us a new fashion trend with sleveless dresses. I was at a function this weekend and saw a parade of women in sleeveless outfits with simply hideous tattoos sticking out in the most unusual places.

On topic - If Chrysler and GM continue to make overpriced and underwhelming cars they will fail no matter how much money the Obama administration dumps into them.

Piece of trivia - Obama drove a Chrysler 300 before he bought the Hybrid Mercury Mariner during the election season. Last year someone was auctioned off his old Chrysler on eBay. Maybe Barack thinks he's the next Lee Iacocca.

It is too bad indeed. Chrysler said the other day that they were targeting dealerships that did not carry all three brands.

Never mind that Stagg held the franchise through some of Chrysler's darkest days and stood by the brand.

Since Chrysler is in bankruptcy I guess they can drop these franchises without any compensation to the dealers. I hope the dealers who want to are able to fight this in court.

I was never able to do business with the Stagg's but a lot of other people bought cars from them. It is a shame for folks on the Lower Cape to have their nearby car-purchasing options further limited.

Many of today's "highly qualified" teachers with a Masters cannot teach their way out of a paper bag.

When I was in elementary school many years ago most of my teachers had a two year Normal School certification. We learned to read well, write a sentence in English and the basics of mathematics.

I would rather have one of those dear old ladies teach my kids today than some of the people we encountered in the public elementary schools today.

Those were also the days when we still had neighborhood schools. We had 36 kids in a second grade classroom with one teacher. There were no teacher aides - the ladies taught us to help each other. Every bright kid who finished his work early was assigned to help out one or two of the children who was having difficulty.

My problem with the girl scouts is this Gestapo pressure on the kids and their parents to sell the darned cookies. When I see the salaries they are supporting, it looks to me like they are pimping the kids to pay the staff salaries.
03/25/09 @ 10:50 am
Conservatives are all about private sector points of light. I do not consider the Girl Scouts to be one of those points of light.

Their executives appear to be another group of useless eaters at the charitable troth.

This particular group spent at least $188k on executive salaries, $121k on "marketing" salaries and (apparently) only $57k on program activities salaries.

It is a bit difficult to compare Boy Scouts "apples to apples" to the Girl Scouts because GuideStar shows them as a much more decentralized organization. I did look up the 990 of our local Boy Scout Council here on the Cape and thought their numbers a lot more laudible than what I saw on the Girl Scouts' tax returns.

The more decentralized the charity, the less executive salaries seem to come into play.

FYI - Girls Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts has $5,983,707 in assets, $3,345,250 in income and $3,292,666 in expenses. (Fiscal year ending 12/31/07)

BONNIE L BATCHELOR CHIEF OPERATIONS $67,600
BRENDA FITZGERALD-MELLO DIR. MARKETING $61,599
BETH TOOLAN DIR. MKTG & MEM $59,524
KARYN MARTIN DIR OF ACTIVITY $57,577

Forgive me if I do not weep over their weak cookie sales.

When are we going to stop spending this kind of money on special education? Many of the kids classified as "special needs" are simply those that need a little extra help in math, reading or some other course. Back when I was in school 100 years ago, we used to tutor our peers and help them out. Today a kid who needs extra help is all too often classified "special needs" and dumped into the money-hungry special ed system.

At the other end of the spectrum are the hopelessly afflicted kids that the taxpayers are expected to support at tens of thousands of dollars per year so that they can be wheeled from room to room by a personal care attendant with little hope of ever attaining even the most rudimentary education.

A few years ago I believe that GM forced the venerable Warren Buick to merge with Puritan as part of GM's dealer realignment. With the death of Puritan, Hyannis has now lost two of its longest-serving dealerships.

It's interesting that where other dealers have failed, the Balise Auto Group seems to be thriving with Hyundai, Nissan and Ford dealerships.

Puritan's store will be a great loss to downtown Hyannis. Hopefully another dealership will be able to occupy that space so as not to further reduce business in downtown Hyannis.

This hijinks with the charter school indeed looks like kids being used as pawns.

It feels like a hideous shell game. The building stays open to placate the neighborhood but it's not a neighborhood school, it's not as good a building as the charter school...etc.

Maybe this is an attempt by the school committee to use the uproar to stage an effort shut down the charter school. I imagine the school committee doesn't want to tolerate any school that is not 100% under their capricious thumb.

It would be interesting to hear from some of the smaller, local charities that were named in the AG's report and in the article. Were some of them naive about working with a fund-raising company? Are they satisfied with what they received at the end of the campaign? Do they feel that the fund-raising company accurately represented its fees and commissions?

IFAW is another story. They are big enough and old enough to know better. When one sees a negative balance like that on a fund-raising report it makes one wonder if there is a special relationship between the fund-raiser and the charity.
