We followed with some great exercises in how to decipher the truth, evaluate sources' credibility...etc.
For his trouble this teacher ended up with the superintendent sitting in our class to make sure he wasn't teaching us Communism.
From that day forward the school administration, driven by a couple of moon-bat parents, maintained a campaign to remove this teacher. The poor man finally resigned, much to the detriment of his students.
Radio Moscow did not make me a Communist any more than seeing a human embryo will make these kids into abortionists. We hope the Sandwich school committee stands behind their professional staff and defends them from this new generation of moon-bat parents.
In response to: Are we in Selma Alabama or Sandwich Massachusetts?
Obviously what they are doing in this school works to the benefit of the students. The public should leave the teachers to their work and thank them for their efforts.
In response to: Sandwich teacher criticized for doing her job
Heck, kids see far worse than this on any of the CSI shows on network television.
The superintendent and school committee should offer this teacher their unequivocal support. Parents please call the school committee members with your statements of support.
Perhaps CCToday could post a list of all Sandwich school committee members' contact information to facilitate this.

My friend was surprised when she was informed that she wasn't supposed to tell kids their answer was "wrong".
In mathematics an answer is right or wrong - it's not a "good try", nor do you sit there and rock the child while he sucks his thumb. It's wrong, you help him obtain the correct answer and then you move on.
Apparently the kids in that school must have needed counseling if they missed a question on a test. Pop quizzes are probably out of the question because they're too traumatic.
In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
When my parents attended school in the 30's and 40's it was much the same. This kinder-gentler schooling is a very recent development. Fuctional illiteracy amongst public school students in America is also a very recent development. Is there a correlation between the two?
In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
In second grade, I remember our teacher playing "store" with us so we could learn to make change. One would sit across the table and the teacher would "purchase" items from us. We had to add up the total, collect her money and give her back change. Any mistake resulted in an immediate rap on the knuckles with her ever-present ruler.
Nobody died from her ruler strikes but we sure paid attention in class!
Our current educational system is raising generations of illiterate sissies. Surely we can do as well as they did in the 50's and 60's without going overboard.
There are no more wandering pederasts today than there were in the 1950's. It wouldn't kill the kids to walk .8 miles to school like we did. When I was in school we still had neighborhood schools and most kids walked.
In response to: Successfully navigating the way through special education
When our school districts close schools, lay off teachers and increase class sizes... does the special ed budget receive the same percentage of cuts?
Somewhere we have had a disconnect in education. When most of us was growing up, if a child needed extra help in math (for example) either the teacher would work with him after school or the school would assign him a peer tutor. Now I hear that this same child would be tossed into the special ed "system", put on an IEP...etc. It seems like the special ed programs are quite self-perpetuating.
I know of many schools around the country where 40% of the student body is on an IEP. Does this mean that the gene pool has deteriorated in the past forty years or does it mean that the special ed careerists have found a way to grab more and more money with each succeeding year.

Who Am I?
I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country. I was not his only child. He fathered several children with several women.
I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me. My mother died at an early age from cancer.
Later in life, questions arose over my real name.
My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.
I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.
I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them..
That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.
I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.
I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s. They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything. That reinforced my conceit.
I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.
I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego.
At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country.
I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess. It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.
I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people.
I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.
I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope' , together we could change our country and the world.
So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities" like the Jews. My true views were not widely known and I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.
I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with.
I'm glad they didn't. Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

Wally is right. Amazon.com's customer service for Kindle is absolutely outstanding. When I upgrade to Kindle 2 I gave my original Kindle to a colleague. Amazon got on the phone with us and walked us through the transfer to my new Kindle and the de-registration of the old one. Then they took my colleague through the registration of the old one to his account.
The battery life on Kindle 2 is far superior to that of the first Kindle. The multi-function toggle mouse is a big improvement over the thumbwheel on the old one.
I find that keeping my Kindle in its cover helps to minimize the risk of damage.

Jacko's death knocked Farrah Fawcett's passing right off the airwaves. That poor woman showed a dignity and grace that would make anyone proud.
May we please keep things in perspective? Yesterday I heard Al Sharpton say something about Michael Jackson having made Tiger Woods and Barack Obama's ascendancy possible.
Not that I have much use for Mr. Obama, but I think even he might admit that M.J. had little to do with the hard work that earned Obama the presidency. As far as Tiger is concerned, I'm pretty sure it was his mastery of the game that got him where he is today.
Michael Jackson became a sad, disturbing spectre in his final years. The man was an arguably great entertainer but that's where this nonsense should stop.

If this were a normal rescue at sea I wouldn't have an issue with the cost. My concern is that this was a fairly high-profile, corporately sponsored project. Shouldn't such an effort take responsibility for its own safety?
If you stage a concert the town expects you to provide security and to pay for traffic control. If a contractor is doing road work, they pay for traffic details. Why then would an inherently dangerous publicity project at sea not be required to provide for the safety of their people?
Could a future venture such as this be required to have a "tender" vessel following the rower, ready to step in if he gets into trouble?

Girard has all kinds of corporate sponsors. There should be ample money to pay for that rescue. I would rather have one of those dear old ladies teach my kids today than some of the people we encountered in the public elementary schools today.
Those were also the days when we still had neighborhood schools. We had 36 kids in a second grade classroom with one teacher. There were no teacher aides - the ladies taught us to help each other. Every bright kid who finished his work early was assigned to help out one or two of the children who was having difficulty.

Their executives appear to be another group of useless eaters at the charitable troth.
This particular group spent at least $188k on executive salaries, $121k on "marketing" salaries and (apparently) only $57k on program activities salaries.
It is a bit difficult to compare Boy Scouts "apples to apples" to the Girl Scouts because GuideStar shows them as a much more decentralized organization. I did look up the 990 of our local Boy Scout Council here on the Cape and thought their numbers a lot more laudible than what I saw on the Girl Scouts' tax returns.
The more decentralized the charity, the less executive salaries seem to come into play.

The point I was making is that the crime stuff in the media - almost anything to do with Hyannis, heroin in Orleans, gangs in schools...etc. runs counter to the idyllic resort community that the tourism industry tries to sell.
Maybe the cop could build a whole new career around watersports fantasies with a tough-but-hot police persona? Wasn't there someone in the D-Y school system that used to produce adult videos... maybe would could morph the Silicon Sandbar into the Latex Sandbar.
In response to: Fallout just may be starting in Barnstable school shuffle
This hijinks with the charter school indeed looks like kids being used as pawns.
It feels like a hideous shell game. The building stays open to placate the neighborhood but it's not a neighborhood school, it's not as good a building as the charter school...etc.
Maybe this is an attempt by the school committee to use the uproar to stage an effort shut down the charter school. I imagine the school committee doesn't want to tolerate any school that is not 100% under their capricious thumb.
