My thoughts exactly. As a friend of my put it--a friend who still maintains he'll write in Ron Paul, Ye Gods--Obama is a like an enthusiastic but secretive salesman at this point. "You'll love it!" He says. "It'll be great!"

And all of this begs the question I ask again and again: would you say this to my face? Absolutely not. And if you did, you'd feel very, very small, indeed. The people I wait on who assume my daddy pays for my school and my lifestyle are throwbacks to a distinctly old-fashioned and misogynist era where it was, apparently, okay to say that kind of thing to a woman.

In response to: Iran and the Intelligence Vaccine
And one need only troll the NYTimes to find articles citing Israel's threats against Iran; threats that can reasonably be called pre-emptive or defensive, but threats nonetheless.
There are many ways to interpret "Israel should be wiped off the map." The most logical way would be literally: "off the map," i.e. the state as a political organization with boundaries should not exist and is not legitamate. A perfectly valid opinion held by many.
Whatever the man's personal opinions, the only thing we have to go on are his words. It's important to look at these words--especially if they're translations--from a number of angles, not all of them hostile, and remember the cultural context. In response to: Hipsters vs. Healthcare: Insurance Without Borders?
The major difference I see here is that someone who makes what I make (about $15-18k per year) absolutely CANNOT afford $465/month. It isn't a matter of buying fewer CDs, it's a matter of paying rent and buying food and having heat and electricity. And taxes are NOT shared fairly, they are determined by income, as this one is. It makes sense on paper, but I realize first-hand that this does not always work in real life. Nor does it comply with the standard definition for "fair" in this capitalist society.
So is the plan fair? No. But it is getting the conversation started about the Pros and Cons of universal health care, and in the meantime, people like me can have health insurance. I see good things.

Also, as an athiest, while I appreciate Christians who are tolerant and have a liberal view of spirituality and don't immediately tell me to go to Hell, I must admit that it rubs me the wrong way to to be told that I'm OK even though I'm an athiest, that God is in me, etc. 'Cause no, he ain't, and I'm a good person anyway. :) Sometimes I'd rather be told to go to hell than to be condescended to.
Buying into the Republicans-as-Christians act is just naive. I'm reminded of the last season of the West Wing, wherein Alan Alda's Republican candidate refused to go to church and warned his constituents of the inherent fallacy in such an act--and why it shouldn't matter to anyone electing leaders.

In response to: Women v. Rhetoric
You are actually arguing my point exactly. We both believe women should be accurately informed -- none of this anti-choice manipulation that DOES exist, although it didn't in your case, and none of the glossed over "going through the motions" that you experienced, either. Accurate, balanced, and updated information, just what you'd want before any medical procedure. Then a decision can be made.
I think we are both on the same page, here.
In response to: Women v. Rhetoric
Re: the educating of women, I'll say it again. Yes. I am all for it. I also believe strongly that second-trimester abortions are often if not always performed on fully informed women. The decision is a hard one and the procedure is not minor. It's naive to think that women are ignorant of what's going on, that they go to sleep and wake up magically okay, and that they'd make a different decision if they were somehow better "edcuated."
The fine line between counseling and manipulation is not subjective. Even the "counseling" that takes place before first-trimester, run-of-the-mill abortions sometimes involves blatant misinformation, emotional abuse (unneccesary ultrasounds, pictures, and models of infants that have little to nothing to do with the actual procedure), and manipulation. This is documented and is not uncommon and nor is it "subjective." It's wrong.
In response to: Women v. Rhetoric
That was exactly my point. If education and information is the problem, then let's educate women--of all ages--and not protect them from themselves by stripping them of their power to make decisions. And I agree that late term abortions are traumatic and may require counseling; however, there is a fine line between "counseling" and manipulation, and too often that line is crossed in the name of pro-life or pro-choice beliefs. There has been recent legislation that pushes for a mandatory "waiting period" for women who want to abort, so they can be "educated" about their decision and think twice about it. It's a perfect scenario for abuse, and in fact that's often exactly what happens.
I'm afraid I missed your point about pornography. Since you asked, I have nothing against pornography -- but I can't answer in detail since I'm not sure what you're after here. Care to clarify?

Nonetheless, I do not need my state to say that this is OK. I am, in fact, offended that my government thinks it has the right to interfere with the sexual and/or family lives of ANY member of its law-abiding and taxpaying community.
The modern marriage is a dismal failure; that arguement does not stand. The statistics prove it.
And there are laws in place to keep the public safe from things like child molestation, rape, and the spread of disease (things that have nothing to do with same-sex marriage). That arguement also doesn't stand.
I also fail to see why normal sexual apetetites (or even abnormal ones that don't hurt others) need to be "regulated." Hopefully this insane prejudice against gays will fade away in time, like the seperate black water fountains of the 60s.

And I'm sure (as I said) that lots of welfare/Section 8/food stamp cases are not pretty. But one does need to recognize that the system is broken when Section 8ers live in an apartment nicer than mine, with nicer TVs!
My TV is from 1986, for gawd's sake!
Pretending that young, poor mothers "getting pregnant" is a complex situation is just silly. It's quite simple: take a pill. There are lots of generic ones that ARE covered by even the most basic health insurance.
Perhaps if we stopped teaching abstince in schools...
In response to: Will Cape DYS program to close at month's end
To answer your questions about Section 8: yes. Yes, I have been to several Section 8 apartments, spent time in them, even spent the night.
In Boston, my best friend pays $1,000+ per month for a tiny studio in this lovely renovated apartment building with great security in a nice neighborhood. Her Section 8 upstairs neighbor just bought a flat-screen TV with the money he'd saved and had a big party. His six children ran around like maniacs, stuffing themselves with junk food while their mothers (not all the same woman, of course) yelled at them to "Shut the f--k up, we're trying to watch the game!"
Do all people who receive government help take advantage of the system? Yes. Do all people who take advantage of the system then ABUSE the system? No, of course not.
But I've witnessed this sort of absurdity on a regular basis, and to deny it exists is just... silly. As Capemom said, some Section 8 rentals have beach passes. I paid $30 for mine.

In response to: Will Cape DYS program to close at month's end
No, I'm sure the government isn't just sending out blank checks. But compared to doing the actual work neccesary to create a life for yourself, yes, getting money from the government is easy.
And I know plenty of people in Boston on Section 8 who are living in the lap of luxury. It is out of control and just absurd to witness.
In response to: Will Cape DYS program to close at month's end
But I get that it's easier to get a man to stick around if you've been married first. Statistics show that, and it's just common sense that if a man was committed enough initially to form a family, he'll be more committed in the future.

All this good fortune means I am a junior at BU with over $40k in student loans, this despite getting a perfect score on my SAT II Writing, a 790 on my SAT II Lit, and a total 1410 on the regular SAT. That's 200+ points higher than what my Valedictorian scored.
Meanwhile, girls around me make stupid decisions and get handed money from the government. (shrug) What's a gal to do? Current policies don't encourage students to take responsibility for themselves, even after the age of 18.
In response to: Will Cape DYS program to close at month's end
The town I grew up in is one of the most affluent in Rhode Island.
The solution to all of this is simple: buy the pill, once a month, for $10 or less. Take it every night before you go to bed, and if you forget, the next day. Make it a habit.
Then, you can have all the bad sex you like with all the immature, jobless young men you fancy. You just won't be having any babies.
So, yes, as a girl of the proper age, marital status, and income we are speaking of, I can agree: you can, and should, blame the mothers to a certain extent. I'm not at all convinced having married parents has anything to do with deliquency, but being CONCIEVED and then BORN certainly does.

I am unhappy with the accusation that I "can't handle" this kind of behavior.
I have lived in this neighborhood for a year. This is the first time I've blogged about any kind of harassment, and only because the situation -- a government van and its occupants acting inappropriately -- gave me a giggle.
If I blogged every time a guy tried to grab my ass or shouted obscenities at me, this blog would be called "Bitching" and not "Journo."
Behavior like that is not OK, but I don't go upset my life over it. My post wasn't even ABOUT catcalling, really. It was about the van, and only the van. The tone was humorous and a little snarky.
Discerning readers got that; the people who read what they want to read, well, that's what they did. Life goes on.
And I'll probably walk to work tonight.
In response to: I Ain't No Holla' Back Girl
Let's be clear here. Catcalling is harassment. But my first thought when a guy drives by is not "Rapist!" and the odd catcall doesn't even register. However, when it turns into even creepier behavior -- as it sometimes does -- I do my best to get out of the situation.
Also, I'd like to point out that it's a certain kind of under-25 year old that finds it OK to harass women on the streets. Let's not malign all under-25s. And I've been catcalled by plenty of dudes in their 30s, 40s, and without irony!
Yes, young boys are stupid. Some of them will never grow out of it.
And keep in mind, there is a big difference between honking or whistling at a girl in public, in broad daylight, and what happens to me when I go out walking at night. I am often the only pedestrian for, literally, miles.
In other news, I just got a bike!
In response to: I Ain't No Holla' Back Girl

Oh, immediately, sir, let me just fetch my burqa.
In response to: I Ain't No Holla' Back Girl
If I were in any real trouble, these guys would be worse than useless. C'mon.
And while catcalling is generally harmless, it's the principle of the thing. I should be able to walk to the coffee shop without a government van (with the mayor's name plastered all over it) slowing down to whistle at me. It's just silly.
I realize I'm supposed to be flattered by these barely legal thugs commenting on the shape of my ass (and really, who could blame them? I happen to be superfine...), but I'm not that starved for attention.
Ever seen a mob? A car full of young dudes is basically a mob. It's all fun and games until it isn't. And there's a fine line (not superfine, like me, but fine) between harmless catcalling and a group of grown men slowing to 3mph to harass me for the better part of five city blocks. Girl with mace vs. 5 dudes in car? Care to wager?
Not every guy who can whistle is a rapist. Ya, I know. That doesn't mean I have to "lie back and enjoy it" though.
Ick, by the way.

But dramatic language using misleading sound bites doesn't improve the level of discourse or understanding.
A terrorist is a special kind of criminal. The kind that blows himself up in a public market and kills innocent people in an attempt to further his political agenda.
A criminal is a very broad term for a person who commits any number of offenses, not all of which are universally agreed upon in our society as being "wrong."
Sometimes laws are bad, and you have to fix them. Hopefully, improving the laws in the immigration department improves national security, and vice versa.
I think you misunderstood my position. Perhaps I was unclear.
In response to: Illegal Immigration: Things to Think About
I'm amazed by your (maverick, croftbs, typwhite) ability to read so much into a teeny, tiny little comment.
In fact, if you read closely, I said that the much of the debate SHOULD BE about the national security issues but that, in fact, the main-stream discourse concerns itself with partisan bashing, cultural/educational/language debates and petty money issues.
Good to see I was right on so many levels.
And I do think it's dramatic to lump illegal immigrants in with the terrorists using scare-tactic language. Yes, some illegal immigrants are criminals in another sense, as well. Kind of like some Americans. But generally (meaning, there are exceptions) people intent on blowing up Americans aren't travelling with Mexican families looking to find work in the US. I see these as two seperate issues, with some overlap in the realm of national security, that need addressing.
I am full, fit to bursting, with common sense, Maverick. And logic, reason, and highly developed critical thinking and reading skills. Thanks.

My father always enjoys sitting at the back of a plane when flying. His reason? "You never see the back of a plane crash into the mountain, do you?"

I wonder (on my off-hours) if it's the other way 'round, and Demi just gets two free and hunky babysitters out of the deal.

It wasn't done in your wonderful chick-lit style, but it's fabulous nonetheless.

Thank you.

I sound ungrateful, but no: I'm glad to have started the summer off with a tan, and now I am a bit wiser and can begin saving up for my next trip.
Stupid dollar.
In response to: On Marriage And Divorce: Living For The Moment!
If a marriage is teetering on the fence due to self-esteem issues that a gym membership or, God Forbid, plastic surgery can fix -- then what the heck! It's an amusing, absurd prospect, but given the state of the American marriage I don't doubt it would fix a few.
I may be young, but I'm none so naive as to think bigger boobs will keep my man around. For a few more hours, perhaps...
As for the "Children Cut Themsleves and Shoot Heroine Into Their Eyeballs If Mummy and Daddy Don't Love Each Other Anymore" bit, I'd love to see the stats compared to kids who get to stay -- yay! -- in a house where Mummy and Daddy hate each other's guts, too, but stay married anyway. (shudder) Divorce can be handled maturely and well and cause little damage.
Just look at Bruce Willis, Demi and Ashton!

Now the Taliban is moving back into Afghanistan; but we've moved on to bigger, better countries, so they can have at it.
We can't blame Islam, though. I own a copy of the Qu'ran, and I'd dare anyone to find the passage that explicitly allows for any of this. It's not Muslims; it's fundamentalists, the same as the wackos here in the US of A that would love to see me, a non-believer, explode in a fiery river of blood when Jesus comes back 'round.
It has nothing to do with God, love, religion, or the Qu'ran, and everything to do with power.
Money is the answer, to just about every "Why?" you can think of.

"Oh No, Mr. Bill!" indeed. Yikes.

I saw lots of very French teenaged couples while there -- the girl pouting and staring off into the distance, the guy crooning at her and usually touching her face in a way I'd find really annoying, or furiously making out and groping one another in diner booths. Very similar to what I saw in Paris.
And I like Mon's strategy for getting what she wants. Being tall and German-looking, though, babbling in French gets me an odd tilt of the head and the question "Vous etes allemande?"
I guess my English accent sounds like a German one.

No need to be ashamed. My father's knowledge of Frech is limited to "J'ai mal a la tete, tout le monde!"
Or, "I have a headache, everybody!"

I just made a mixed CD of Nine Inch Nails for a good friend of mine, who just turned 50-something. She called me up and requested it, actually, after hearing their new single on the radio.
On the flip side, I just became a member of WGBH so I can stop feeling guilty about streaming Eric in the Evening from my laptop at night...

That being said, I did not get the Gershwin reference, if that's what it was. Could be both, I suppose. I think even Janis Joplin did something with the phrase.

Nice to know about the Stop & Stop self-checkout.
In all fairness, I did find the BBC version of Episode 2, and seems as if they did use a lot of Attenborough's script for Weaver's narration. No excuse for not letting him do the narrating, though.

It seems like that is probably the case -- or at least, the press created a lot of smoke for a very little fire. Anyway, all the publicity has made the book very popular on Amazon.com!

Sorry, I didn't realize the NYTimes website was now charging for the full article. When I linked to the article, it was available in its entirety to the general public.
My impression was some librarians (um, certainly not ALL of them; they aren't The Borg) in some schools were banning the book.
Librarians banning books is not unheard of -- the school librarian of my elementary banned all "Goosebumps" books. While I have great respect for the American Library Association, and mentioned in my blog that I had no intention of villifying librarians as a whole, it's not unthinkable that a few of them did not get the memo that they are supposed to the guardians of free speech.
I Googled around and found an article on the topic here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070223/ap_en_ot/books_the__s__word
Apparently the author of the book is a librarian herself.

I think the problem with "noblesse oblige" in this country is our politicians' inherent lack of anything resembling nobility. Or obligation to the people they serve.
In response to: The Higher Power of Naughty Words
My comment "...if your five-year-old makes it into an R-rated theater" was my brief way of advocating parental involvement over institutions (like libraries, or the MPAA, or Hilary Clinton) deciding what kids can or cannot be exposed to. I agree: TV today is vile! I would never let my (hypothetical) 6-year-old watch MTV even for a second. I'm at the ripe old age of 20... and even I think most "popular" culture is garbage (actually, I don't even get TV channels anymore).
But still, I'd like to be the one to make those decisions for my kids (and, as they get older, with my kids)--not have a politician telling me what is good for them. Only good can come from parents being involved in their kids' education and not letting the Cox Digital Cable parental controls do the babysitting.
I think we are both on the same page here; I was being flippant about letting kids do what they "want."

As someone born in Florida, raised in New Hampshire ("pastoral," I suppose) and then transplated to Rhode Island ("swamp Yankee"-land), I suffer a mild (yet severe) identity crisis whenever I cross the border (any of 'em). To make matters worse, my family's home in RI is within walking distance of the MA border.
When I return to Florida I am called a "Yankee" -- which leaves me befuddled because, as everyone knows, Floridians are not real "Southerners" at all!
And let's not even go into the statue of the Confederate Soldier located right in the heart of Oak Bluffs, MA.
The best response? As we say in RI, "Oh Mah Gawd."

There's something else to writing, as well: plenty of caffeine, a deadline, and a late night.

Can't wait to try Deon's new gourmet eats.
I went to Zapotec in May. While the Margaritas really were the best I've ever had, the food was bland and boring. I believe they had just undergone the owner change-over... maybe it's improved?
