Stacey, My first hawaiian pizza was eaten at Joe's Pizza in Northammpton, MA. I was a teenage runaway and a friend of my brother's, from Duxbury, was attending Smith College. She took me in. I lived for three days in the female dorms at Smith College until Campus Security got wind and came to fetch me. My fun ended right there. :)

My meter seems bit off but I tried.

Then to his regret, he choked upon it.

Ned Wrote:"Jonathan yeah I watch Comedy Central and the Cartoon Network a lot... that show's from like 4 years back... "

It gives you some sense of my spot on the learning curve of pop culture.
I only found that show by staying at a hotel 4 years ago.(recently found it again on netflix)
I haven't had cable in years.
Consequently, my video-based influences come entirely from Public Libraries

My kids consequently idolize the Beatles rather than Hanna Montana.

You make an interesting point, Ted. I am not a big fan of such publications, but I've been known to peruse one or two from time to time, and the artistry and talent is often surprising.

Further concerning alternative media- Ned, have you ever seen "Drawn Together"
a rather off-beat cartoon from cable?
Their chracter "Toot Braunstein" always reminds me of your Betty Boop-esque creations.(though yours are nicer)

Dennisport isn't exactly Shangri-La, but the gentrification inherent in the proposal isn't appealing either. I lived in that neighborhood in 2005, and was always amazed at the contrast between the tiny cottages and the towering resorts and "new money" homes.
It's been all the rage to jack up those cottages and dig basements. This seems at least marginally better than tearing the village down. The fact is, the character of Dennisport IS the old style cottages, seaside colonies and graveyard-like desolation several months out of the year. Let's not make it what it isn't. Enough of that happened already.

I think the "vicinity" requirement seems a little extreme, 4C's being on State Property, Route 132, not 6A.. Furthermore, recent changes to 132 have been huge, the adjacent Burger King/Rest Area/Transit center is enormous. What's to say that 4C's, just across the street is somehow the dividing line for proximity to 6A?
It seems absurd.

The dangers of traditional Halloween seem overblown.

"HELL & ETERNAL RETRIBUTION
The one who physically dies in his sins without Christ is hopelessly and eternally lost in the Lake of Fire, and therefore, has no further opportunity of hearing the Gospel or repenting. The Lake of Fire is literal. The terms "eternal" and "everlasting" used in describing the duration of the punishment of the damned in the Lake of Fire carry the same thought and meaning of endless existence as used in denoting the duration of joy and ecstasy of saints in the presence of God (Hebrews 9:27, Revelation 19:20).

Please help out all the classic car enthusiasts and make pre-1980 cars exempt from the titling requirement.
I have specific language in mind, whereby owners would sign an affidavit affirming that they are the legal owners
of the vehicles and have not obtained ownership through illegal means.
There is a serious loophole preventing honest people from obtaining titles for classic cars, and The RMV could care less.

These Town DPW's need to make sure Town Roads meet their own requirements.(13 feet clearance) Many do not. Many cannot, due to unique land features.
I drive a very wide trailer for work and find that many local roads are overgrown to the edge.
The requirements about potholes and open drainage are reasonable, but the 13 foot rule seems impractical and perhaps hypocritical, given the comparitive overgrowth of many public roads.

Staples is a ripoff in most other cases. Toner cartridges are 75% cheaper on the net.
Entry level printers, like base model HP deskjets are obtainable for $30 shipped on the net. The cheapest printers at Staples are $60 by comparison. We discovered this when the kids were given a gift certificate which was thought to be more than sufficient to purchase a basic printer.
Packing tape and shipping supplies, which I need for my internet auto parts sales, are three times more expensive at Staples vs. the net.

In response to: Interview with Carol Woodbury
Carol Woodbury made a point to highlight after school programs, as filling the void left by the cessation of such critical programs as Home Economics and Shop. I voiced my disagreement above.
In addition, there is a great disparity between in-school class time and after school enrichment. One is mandated, led by the school and available to all students. Fee-based after school programs are a different creature altogether, certainly useful and no doubt staffed by dedicated individuals, but not available to all students, and not held to the same level of detail that is required when teaching critical survival skills such as home economics.
Now, the roster of after school activities has been released for ME Small, as set up by the PTO, not Ms. Woodbury's office.
The fee is $40 and includes... Book Club, Cribbage, Technology, Writing, Poetry, Homework, Journal Writing, etc.
With money tight in many households, it seems sketchy to pony up $40 so your kid can do their homework under supervision, or build with legos for that matter. (continued)

In response to: Bishop to Freemason
Richard, You are on the money with respect to the pale line between religion and politics. As far as whether or not the freemasons are anti-Catholic, let's just say that the ideologies, at best are in opposition. Freemasons support separation of Church and State- The Church/Bishop Bourget were diametrically opposed to such liberal ideas.
Another element is the so-called religious indifference of freemasonry, whereby members are often asked to simply obey their local brand of Christianity. Surely this was a thorn in the side of The Church hierarchy, who claimed to know the one true God and the one true faith.
It is that vast gulf of ideology that I find compelling amid the family history, rather than support of one side or another.
Until 1913, the Church officially decried Freemasonry. Obviously in today's times the church has different priorities.
I don't doubt that 120 years has changed a lot.

I am trying hard to digest this. I was raised in large part by my grandparents, the very generation to which you refer. While I applaud simpler times and virtues there were other far less savory aspects to the old way, and in my humble opinion, such divisions did little to foster a "closer knit community" for when people assume "like to like" they also unwittingly subscribe to the notion that everyone of a particular race or religion acts alike and naturally wants the same thing. That is a slippery slope.
I remember my grandmother telling stories of such times, where she as a little girl was not allowed to play with the so called "Portagee" children.
Well, of course, right? Birds of a feather flock together, in that frame of mind.
In my own experience, the opposite is true. My daughter's best friend is Chinese, and this enriches our experience. I am fluent in Brazilian Portuguese and therefore grateful I didn't limit myself "like to like"
I agree with many of the simpler/physically stimulating elements of times of yore, but disagree with division by race or religion.

It seems Mr. Mc Sheey's life was one of amazing milestones, or just merely stones as the case may warrant.
Surely the idea of his mother as an early 20th century female wrestler evokes images of early suffragettes, or mayhaps "Suffragette City"---"wham, bam, thank you ma'am" as heard against the canvas in the vaudevillesque wrestling rings of Southie in the early 20th Century.

Mary, Good advice, except that CCH royally screwed up the last time I went there. I am not sure if I'll EVER go back.
I went in with severe toe pain and I had not stubbed it. They insisted on an X-Ray and I thought it was something more severe. I practically begged them to look into it further. They ignored me and sent me on my way.
Two days later I went to Falmouth Hospital, where they told me I would have lost my foot had I went on much longer. Diagnosis? Cellulitis/staph infection that was consuming my foot.
Though I launched an internal complaint at CCH, they officially snubbed me yet agin, admitting no responsibility.
In a pinch I'll go there but Falmouth Hospital saved my foot when CCH faltered royally.

Health Care- A privelege only due to those who've earned enough money to pay for it. Great, just friggin great!
I'll just walk around wondering about my BP/Cardiac Health while I hum "God Bless America"
The Cardiovascular Specialists in Hyannis REALLY want to see me but guess what, I cannot. Why? Because I am just above the threshold for Masshealth.I lost my coverage.By the same token, God only knows what it might cost me to get the Office Visit/EKG/Echo/Blood work. I cannot afford it.Bear in mind, I am 36 years old, with a perfect storm of high BP, mother dead at 30 from aneurism, father dead at 52 from stroke, aunt dead at 50 from undiagnosed cardiac issues.
What made me lose my insurance was that we relied on hard work, not a handout. If we just sat on our asses, we'd suddenly have subsidized care.
Something is definitely wrong with that.
A family of four on Cape Cod with 45K combined is simply able to pay the bills. What sorts of behavior do we encourage when an uninsured person will find instant relief if they decide to just loaf?

" are not bound by that same rule" ;)

Incidentally, the statute does say "across the tracks" not "onto the tracks".
I'd say the law is pretty clear.
07/05/09 @ 7:56 pm
It could be that the crossing was defective. I am sure a report will be issued to clarify.
The way the statute reads to me, a bus may only cross when it's safe to "complete the crossing". in other words, that bus would need to have an available place to go in order to cross safely as required by Federal Law. Merely pulling onto the tracks does not seem to fit the bill, IMHO.
I may be wrong.
We shall see.
Passenger vehicles sare not bound that same rule.
07/05/09 @ 4:57 pm
It would appear that the driver had no business being on the tracks, regardless of signal status.
"A. Special provisions govern buses carrying passengers.

- Under 49 C.F.R. sec. 392.10, the operators of such vehicles shall not cross railroad tracks at grade unless they first: 1) stop their vehicles within 50 feet of, and not closer than 15 feet to, the tracks, 2) thereafter listen and look in each direction along the tracks for an approaching train, 3) ascertain that no train is in fact approaching. When it is safe to do so, the vehicle may be driven across the tracks in a gear which permits it to complete the crossing without a change of gears. The driver must not shift gears while crossing the tracks."

RE: Pacheco. Public servants must necessarily behave under the bounds of statute and a rich history of administrative law and procedure.
We all know that the system is less that perfect but at least there are clear means of accountability, public review and public comment. Private industry does not have the same mandated fiduciary duty as traditional public servants. Private companies, in many respects, are freer to thumb their noses at such subtle obligations. I feel strongly that ad nauseum privatization is like money changers in the temple.
Re: Managed Care- Occasionally the State tries to enroll MassHealth/Medicaid recipients into certain managed care programs, but most of those programs are based in metro/Boston, South Shore/ Central Mass. and do not even serve Cape Cod.
Any such proposal as the one you offer must necessarily have the right programs in place on a local basis, not forcing people to drive off-Cape.
I don't see the current infrastructure as having such flexibility.

Numah, The old tracks, in and of themselves were nice to have around, nice to look at, and having them dislodged and strewn about with bits of heavy-gauge wire sticking up dangerously in no way improves the path or brings us closer to the proposed, yet unfunded idea of converting the tracks to Rail Trail. For now they are tracks, and when secured to the ground, are nice to look at and not very dangerous. Unless and until the State begins construction, it is patently wrong to rationalize private citizens taking whatever scrap iron they wish from a public walking path, thus endangering other responsible citizens who care only to enjoy the view , not sell it off for a quick buck.
As for assuming you lacked an emotional and historical connection to the land, that is simply in response to,
"So Thoreau rode those rails. Yes, and?? Then I guess that means they should be kept in their current condition. Maybe it should be another national park. get over it" That tone might lead someone to think as I did, that you really didn't care about such abtractions. Apparently you do.

Last time I checked, the taking of private or personal property is considered a crime, that of larceny.
Abandoned property laws are in place for those instances when items are indeed "abandoned" but no such provisions exist for railroad/public property. Laws for abadoned property DO NOT include the taking of old railway hardware.

I regret that you don't feel any historical or emotional connection to this land. Maybe I am the fool for even giving a $#!+! Regardless the tracks are frequented by pedestrians and fisherman, and abut some very special land indeed, a national park on the local scale, The Indian Lands.
The tracks abut Bass River and The Highway and that swath of land is largely undeveloped. If one looks across to the Yarmouth side, you can see a very different scene, houses crowding the opposite bank.
So I guess I am saying that this land IS SPECIAL and deserves to be respected.

The area is frequented by walkers and appreciated by many. Shame on those who chose to treat it as their private scrap yard! I hope they are caught.

I like the idea of wood ash as compost. Someone burned brush across from me. I gathered the cinders and spread them as mulch for my perennial beds. To my surprise, it worked well and looked really cool, jet black with a hint of silver.

RE: public benefits
When my wife went back to work after 13 years of being an at-home Mom we thought life would get better with a small boost in income, but instead it put us just above the threshold for MassHealth and we are now uninsured. My mother died from an aneurism (32) and my father died from a stroke (52). I have high-blood pressure and just might succumb to a similar fate if I don't get medical care.
Just before I lost my insurance my doctor ordered me to test my kidneys, as my BP meds carry risk of kidney damage. I was never able to get the test. Now I walk around worried as hell any time I feel pain in my side.
This is what it's like for uninsured citizens of Massachusetts, and the recent mandate appears especially obscene under the circumstances.
Just so you know, we at the poverty line are truly discouraged from improving our situations and THAT should change as well.

I don't think there's a geocache there Susan. It's kind of overgrown and underwater this time of year. The land beside it was used for cranberry bogs many, many years ago, and the only evidence is a series of channels cut into the land in a grid pattern. I reckon the bogs were active in the 30's, based on the age of the trees.
There is evidence that paths were well established many years ago, but are impassable now.

LOL Susan. Early this year I set out from 134 to Local Flavor at mile 8 1/2
At mile 1 a piece of litter, paper towel, got caught in my derailler and popped the master link on my chain.
I managed to get the chain back together caveman style, using a large rock to snap the link back in place.
My bike was fine until I arrived in Harwich.
The link let go and lost its components.
I was dead in the water, 8 1/2 miles from my car.
A local was nice enough to bring me to the hardware store. MacGyver style I emerged grasping lineman's pliers assorted wire, nails and other experimental fasteners, my walet $30 lighter.(freakin price gougers) After busting two knuckles wide open in vain attempt to jury-rig the chain I accepted fate and ate lunch.
My companion rode back to the car as I walked back to mile 5 at Pleasant Lake. She met me for a well-appreciated rescue.

What's funny about your single-minded crusade is that nobody here discourages healthy discourse. I think Ford has a slight advantage over GMC due to its' cornering of the large car market. With the loss of Oldsmobile and the decline of Buick/Pontiac the only truly full-size cars now come from Ford, the Crown Vic/Town Car/Grand Marquis platform.
Ford's dominance of the truck market is coming to an end, though. Toyotas full-size trucks are picking up speed in the market.

The problem with the Fords and GM's of the worlds is that they are still mired in an antiquated business model, whereby everyone succumbs to the blind assumption that American Cars rule the road . Those assumptions resulted in the bloated creation of many different nameplates, all fixed on the same platforms, basically all the same cars with slightly different badges, trim and names. This redundancy is unneccesary and doesn't plague the Toyotas of the world.
My old car, a 1995 Olds 88, is essentially the same car as a 1995 Buick Park Ave. or a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville. Many Other examples of this ad nauseum redundancy can been seen from Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, Chevy/GMC et al.
Yet still, American Cars have something to offer. Our family uses full-size American Cars for our daily needs, so we do support the domestic sector. They need to drop the BS nameplate redundancy and get back to basics, IMHO.

Possee, I thought your last post was quite insightful. I've pondered the same thing. Consider how many metric tons of illegal drugs it takes to satisfy US demand. Then calculate how many tractor trailer loads would have to cross the border in order to transport such massive quantities. Then ask yourself whether the cartel would send a multi-million dollar truckload willy-nilly across the border without some assurances that their trucks will cross unmolested.
I am not so bold as to allege a wholesale conspiracy but I believe firmly that the trade is "facilitated" in high levels of our government.

I think the Times intentionally pares down its blogging content so as to maintain the impression that quality content is ONLY available from dyed in the wool journalists. If you look at their blogs they are mostly text, with precious few photos. One blog describes someone's journey across the nation. THERE ARE NO PICTURES! That seems weird to me, and further underscores the notion that we are talking apples and oranges.
I understand the allure of the newspaper, that visceral joy of handling fresh newsprint. I started many youthful days at dawn, cutting the bundles and slinging the canvas over my shoulder so I could deliver the news to my customers.
I remember how newspapers used to be. On Sundays the thing would be heavy as hell, full of useful coupons and timely information. Slowly the coupons became less useful and the information less timely.
Imagine the dilemma faced by the Times. One one hand its site needs to be on par with the competition. Conversely, it can't be so good that readers will see the printed form as useless.

I am trying to think your point through, of why the print media alegedly has so much more pull, is so much more responsive and has so much richer content than its internet counterparts.
I look at things case by case and make the judgements I see fit. Here are a few things I noticed recently.
The recent story about the Tribal election was covered by cctoday on the 8th. Cape Cod Times covered the same story a day later, today.

jones, you cite town budget concerns. If you search this site you will find just such content. As far as corruption and contraversy, that's fair game here too. I disagree with the idea that internet news sites somehow lack the journalistic integrity and muckraking instinct of the old newspapermen.
02/09/09 @ 1:04 pm
Mr. Jones. Your points are well-taken to a certain extent, but I do agree with Walter's assessment as well, that no one under 40 is reading them, or very few.
I stopped getting the Times about 10 years ago and I only regret its absence slightly. You can get the same news, weather and commentary for free on the web, and who on earth is going to pay for costly print advertisments anymore?
Craigslist is free and far more effective. Where you pay by the word in a print ad, which limits your ability to fully describe anything you might be selling, you can get loads of space online, and as far as CL, you can post full-color pictures of your widget. Imagine what it would cost to put full-color pictures into your print ad?

In all seriousness, 44K is not a lot of money for a family of four on Cape Cod. You can't get Masshealth. If you're lucky enough to get the kids insured for a small premium you as adults have to go uninsured, since the cost of premiums would suck up any and all extra funds the family has. Imagine you're at risk with high BP and neither parent living past 52.(stroke/aneurism) Imagine having to postpone tests for compromised kidney function because at the moment your income became
sustainable you joined the ranks of the uninsured.
These are real-life stories, and happen more often than one thinks.
Raising the limit a bit wouldn't be bad thing, and it certainly wouldn't be creating any "fat cats".

I always sense a delicious irony when the powers that be claim it's all about "free trade", yet every major industry draws closer and closer to being an oligopoly, and any economist will tell you that oligopoly and monopoly are the antithesis to truly "free trade"
Since the FTC approves the very sorts of mergers and consolidations that create such an imbalance, all this is done under the color of Federal Authority, and "free trade" is an empty buzzword, gone the way of the dodo, IMHO.

In response to: A Comment on Our American Ideals
Welcome Mr. Latimer!
I found this piece to be engaging in that it reminds us that our liberties should not be taken for granted.
I had a debate recently with a friend, an officer of the law. He argued that the treatment of detainees was justified, since rights are "earned" and those folks had not yet earned the rights of an American.
I reminded him of the Declaration of Independence, those "unalienable Rights" asserted by our founding fathers. "Unalienable" does not portend the ability to be diluted by geography, visibility, color or creed, as suggested by folks like my friend.
My friend replied with a snicker.
"You mean that Constitutional Stuff from WAY back then???"
What I learned from this exchange was that folks do need to be reminded
of our raison d'etre, that our system is a dynamic one and requires our concern and involvement.
Thanks for posting such a thoughtful piece.

Chili Sounds Great!
Here's my recipe for Chili. I use Trader Joe's products, but substitute if necessary.
Ingredients: 1 lb. ground beef, 1 large onion, 15oz can of corn, 20oz can of kidney beans, 15 oz. can of prepared chili, 4T chopped garlic, 2T lemon juice, 2T paprika, 3T cumin, 3T chili powder.
Method: Chop the onion and garlic.
Brown the beef together with garlic and onion, drain.
In a large saucepan add the beef mixture and the canned ingredients. Do not drain the kidney beans or corn.
Mix and then add the spices and lemon juice(optional) Stir frequently and simmer over low heat.
Serve with sour cream and cornbread.

I always marvelled at how the public are prevented from accessing the public areas of beach in high-end waterfront neighborhoods. In other words, anything below the high tide mark is fair game for public access, yet imagine the stink that would arise if one were to traverse those quasi-private beaches along mansion alley.
Folks would call the cops and come out in Gucci bathrobes, demanding that we leave "their property".
I want to propose legislation that requires waterfront property owners to inform the public of their right to access below the high-tide mark, since many homeowners think "private beach" means no access at all, which isn't the case. Sadly, most people take those signs at face value. I suggest that whenever a "private beach" sign is erected, another sign enumerates the rights of the public to access below the high-tide mark, as provided by law.
The author of this article makes a valid point. Though I am on the fence, I recognize that inconsistencies abound.

I have always argued against privatization based one one overriding fact. Public organizations have a statutory obligation to the people they serve, whereas private enterprise has no such statutory obligation. This is not to say that government-run entities are so much more efficient or beneficial to the public, just that there are clear avenues in place that may address problems that arise over time.
I know that cronyism exists at all levels, public and private. Thankfully in the public sector there is this thing called administrative law, something we can draw upon and refer to as an authority when we find it necessary to compel change. For-profit companies know nothing about true public administration, where, ideally, focus is placed on serving the myriad interests of the people rather than the narrow interests of a select few stockholders.

That Honda might be rusty, but I think the repairmen may have exaggerated a bit. In all seriousness it takes less than 5 minutes to reach the conclusion they gave you, certainly not warranting a big bill.
Rotors can easily be replaced, regardless of rust. Nothing will break off as they suggested. In addition, the only impediment to aligning this car involves freeing frozen nuts in the front end, a challenge that any competent mechanic could handle with copious amounts of heat and penetrating oil.
It is possible that this car has some serious structural rust but I wouldn't necessarily trust the judgement of the a shop that charges over $300 to jack up a car and look underneath.

We rode the Rail Trail Thursday, 18 miles in the delightful 40 degree winter air. We sensed it was the last ride of the year, and perhaps so.
Regarding pack's comment, I also enjoy riding in the off-season, but I learned the hard way to avoid the trail whenever ice and snow is present. Early last spring we embarked on a ride and some ice was still present. Out of the four of us, three dumped our bikes after hitting the ice, including my young daughter. One the way back, we walked our bikes through the slippery area just as another cyclist tried to negotiate the path and fell hard, even worse than we did.
You can dress for warmth but you can't ride on ice.

I try to avoid being too judgemental about "kids these days", thinking back to how my hippie parents dressed when thay were teenagers, and the distress it caused for their Nixonite parents. If anything is universal, it's the rift between fashion and lifestyles from one generation to the next. I do object to the sexualization of pre-pubescent attires, however. Regardless, if there's any way to encourage such behavior, it is to object to it vocally. It's been long known that dissaproval by adults results in a perception of "coolness" by youth. It's inevitable.
I'd also feel compelled to point out that "pulling the plug", of television that is, tends to make children more likely to resist these most unsavory trends.

It's strange how the tradition of memorizing poetry has left us in recent generations. When I was in grade school 20-some odd years ago we were required to memorize one poem per week. I believe that the last time they closed the Willow St. entrance to Dennis Pond, where most of the offenses culminated, they actually placed Jersey barriers in front of the parking area, thus preventing people from even parking there. Ned,That's awful!
I have thought about this some more.
Imagine that this child had died at the hand of a drunk driver or a careless gunman. I doubt the father would be so quick to minimize the death in such a fashion. I find it disturbing that the father would make statements such as,"We have no regrets." and that he "lived a lifetime in his short eight years." It's one thing to comfort ourselves in the midst of tragedy over which we have no control, but to say such things when one is largely responsible seems quite bold, and frankly, contemptible. I believe the father should be charged with reckless endangerment.

I have been discussing the homless issue with various local people and no one I have spoken to feels that they have been threatened and the overriding opinion is that the retail climate on Main St. has a lot more to do with the economy than transients blocking access to stores. I feel they are being treated as scapegoats.

Thanks Susan, From looking at the map it seems like this path is accessible from the CCMNH paths across the street from the museum. One path which used to extend from there went south along the water and eventually became overgrown. The museum tried to block that extension with brush when thay worked on the paths last year I'll have to chcek it out from all angles and see how/if they connect.

In response to: Forum set on Hyannis street people
This story strikes me as very creepy, a for-profit entity sticking their noses into the non-profit domain. Sure, the homeless problem is unsightly, but we as a society bear the burden of our outcasts. It's tempting to try and shoo them away, as though this idyllic place just doesn'thave "those people" but real life is gritty and often unsightly. The services are there for reason, and I don't feel that it's like the frickin' field of dreams, "build it and they will come" The next thing we know it'll be officially "kick the homeless" day. The local businesses can offer beefy steel-toed boots and disgusted residents can kick the sh*t out of those unsightly outcasts that are "ruining" business. Things are slowing down everywhere, and it's not all because of street people.
When laws are broken, it's the job of police to make arrests. Other than that, homeless people need to eat, be clothed and have shelter, unless the steel-toed approach seems better suited.

I enjoyed the clarity and balance in this article. When you write "Why must we be "against" the candidite with whom we don't entirely agree?',it strikes me that you've hit upon the core problem with politics in America, where discourse is seen more as a battle than a discussion. I've taken note that Obama hasat least attemped to keep it more as a discussion, but like you, I am still stuck in the middle, that purple zone you so aptly describe.

I never said you went to church, just that you state a religious awakening as the only true path towards sobriety. Church or not, that is exclusive, not inclusive and does little to serve the broad-based problem of alcoholism that plagues people of many faiths. I regret that you think I am "whacked out" for disagreeing with your version of things. I am trying not to make this personal. This is just a discussion, right? I stand by my opinion that your comments reflect an outlook that is self-righteous, judgemental and angry. All it takes is one look at the caricature of a sneering, drunken priest to give a hint. Your triple posts also reflect that well.
Why don't we agree to disagree,OK?
Peace! Jon

I apologize for appearing to judge you. I tried to stress that it was my opinion, and you are free to discard it at will. I do feel that the emphasis on a Christian God seems more exclusionary than inclusive. Who says all alcoholics are Christian?
Despite the statement that alcoholics are free to choose whatever path to address their illness, your arguments for the most part tend to make fun of or minimize any non AA approaches to alcoholism. You state "We are suffering from an illness that only a spiritual experience will conquer" This does not allow for other options, now does it?
You have stated flat-out that other treatment plans, rehab, medical approaches etc. "don't work" That doesn't sound very flexible either.
I am sincerely not intending to put forth an "ad hominim" attack. It is what you say, rather than who you are that leads me to my opinions. To call "Bob" a "Poor son of a bitch" indeed sounds judgmental and angry. So let's just say that that is how you come across, perhaps not who you really are. Peace!

Judge not, lest ye be judged. I think the twelve step program left out one important aspect-anger management. In my opinion you sould like a sober, yet very angry and judgemental individual. I think it's zealots that often turn people away from the help they need. I truly believe AA needs to take a step back from the whole spritual self-righteousness and instead focus on helping people in a more secular and non-jugemental way. I am of course assuming that you speak for the organization as a whole.
Peace

In response to: Let's Privatize Public Libraries
Public libraries are largely staffed by volunteers. I doubt that a private enterprise could secure such dedication.
Also they are one of the last defenders of the first and fourth amendments. Librarians have gone to court to defend the privacy rights of their patrons against the requests of an intrusive government and thwart the book burning tendencies of extremists. Also grandmother's living room would never shelve some of the very hip selections found in our public libraries. They are far from stuffy or out-of-date. The rush for privatization needs to bear in mind the rich history of administrative law in the US, laws which bind public administrators but not CEO's. Perhaps certain government agencies do have difficulty administering programs, but to suggest that private industry could do so much better seems short-sighted, given current events in corporate America. They are screwing up just as badly, if not worse. After all, it's the government who is now bailing out private industry.
I think we need to be very careful what we wish for.

Thank goodness the Grinch stole Christmas!
Consumer spending just tanked.
I can't imagine why.
I am so glad that the plan didn't make it through, since we sing the corporate tune with our dollars daily. It does seem obscene that they squandered a fortune provided by us, then dared to beg for a bailout. Maybe now the FTC will be less likely to approve the ad nauseum mergers which always preclude such cataclysmic failures. With the consolidation of industries comes the feeling of executive fearlessness, unwise practices and consumer skittishness. The feeling of "I'll get mine" results in failure by design.

Free verse has a place for those who choose who write that way, but I just don't normally. Strangely enough, Frost and Dickenson (who rhymed) are more remembered than e.e. cummings.;)
Also bear in in mind that that poetry as an art is largely lost to the masses, and often free verse brings them even further away, IMHO. It sounds too much like prose.:) I like to draw them in in way they can remember, and hopefully understand.
