I don't understand what has everybody so surprised and upset. Kissinger got the peace prize once as well, and that guy and Nixon pretty much designed the destruction of most of South America in the 1970s.

Christ - just glancing through this thread is enough to give someone a headache. It's all about the money, no doubt, but as long as the good ol' USA has the aspirations of being empire and socking the TRILLIONS of $$$$$ into the military defense budget - wait... make that war budget, there will be no progress as it takes the lumbering divisive status quo to makle it so and I believe that the debate you read in this thread accomplishes that for the powers that be.

Of course there's also this reason for the gorilla. The cost of the wars. Good details can be found here on current conditions in Afghanistan.

That's an interesting story on Cairo. It's the future for a lot of places in the US and it points out that a lot of damage has been done in all kinds of ways with all kinds of people responsible for it. I don't see it turning around anytime soon. Maybe the South Pan American Union will let us join their ranks once most of the US is a walled off ghost town. Karma?...

And good catch by Ned. Love that story and a nice punctuation to the real life results to the town.

Here's a town in FL that had it's cruisers repossesed after losing half of its staff already. Wonder who the bank was, a bailed out one. You start having third world conditions when your municipality can no longer maintain its infrastructure and support services. Wake up America! It may already be too late.

Prepare for third world conditions here in America. That's what happens to coutries after they've had their resources looted by the usual suspects, as has taken place here over the past 40 years. Stolen: retirement funds, equity, future monies, the Treasury...

Sorry... you can't get there from here. Nice piece Mary. I would also add that media reform is necessary as well. People don't realize how big these mouth pieces really are. They're huge conglomerates. Small example of many: GE who owns NBC and tons of other stuff also manufactures weapons. Anyone notice all those beautiful and expensive animations demonstrating high tech weaponry leading up to the war. Liberal media my eye... when it's not selling mindlessness it's pimping anything that pays.

This so so laughable. Perry... what a pimp. Thing is though most rightwingers are too lazy to do this more than once. The people protesting torture, war, Patriot Act, etc. have been doing it for years. These pathetic losers went along with all this crap for several decades. The party in Washington is over. And it's not the fat a$$es in the rotary that are going to change this system that has failed so miserably. The people (not folks) have had it. Ya got to come up with something better than this to qualm the anger that I have heard in casual conversations everyday with total strangers. Lame try Repubs to hijack the populism. Kids didn't even have this as a trend until local school administrators started calling emergency assemblies. The funny thing is that I've heard from local teens that they've been sending around pics of "Naked People" as a joke. BTW - Not people they know.

It always cracks me up. This hype about what a "boon" to the local economy film productions will bring. What it really means as that a call will go out to all the locals who are desperate to be involved in the entertainment business to come and work for free or almost nothing. This "Hollywood East" stuff is BS. It will be heavy with "interns." I can't begin to tell you how many people I meet through my work (access TV) that think there may be a future for them in all of this. So many people either want to be rock stars or celebreties, no one seems to realize that the good ol' USA is being entertained to death.

Since your wavin' tho ol' Red, white & blue I suggest you read a recently written bokk "A Peoples' History of Poverty in America." What you have written here is so obviously and literally pedestrian and bourgeois. I would bet that you have never had a hungry day in your life. Good for you. And where is all that big money in social work? Most of the people who work with these problems either come from them or volunteer tremendous amounts of time. You have nothing to give but a narrow cliche', uninformed opinion from a lofty perch. Thanks but no thanks - your charity sucks and your view of humanity is flawed.

Funny to use Bill Cosby as a reference. I won tickets to see him at the Melody tent last summer. For one thing he wasn't funny anymore, seemed to be flyng by the seat of his pants and there was not one person of color in the entire audience. But afterall that is his constituency. The group that has a "black friend." The book quoted is a simplistic view that ignores the economic impacts of centuries of enslavement and the lack of opportunities for quality education in the inner city slum. Bill Cosby is out of touch.

I hate this bailout business too, but I find it very interesting the scrutiny and conditions for Labor in the details. Graig was really good in the last Bond film, "Casino Royale." He played the role a lot different from others, very cold blooded, as you would imagine a professional killer to be. I go to the Day of Mourning almost every year and will tomorrow as I've done for quite some time now. It's very somber and humbling to honor those who occupied this land before us. All the cliche quips about indians and casinos are pretty worn out these days. I really recommend taking a young person as we will be doing tomorrow. Understanding at an early age the differences between myths and real history goes a long way in building a more realistic future for everyone. Think about peace this holiday.

In response to: A letter to the people of Plymouth UK
Nice peace. I've read a lot of history on this subject, and indeed popular history is written by the victors, but these days there are alternatives out there on the net. I think this particular link regarding the Lahnape indians, later to be known as the Delaware, is a marvelous example of historically following a string of historic events in those times and seeing it in a perhaps more realistic and alternative point of view.

http://www.tolatsga.org/dela.html

I also suggest that instead of going to Plymouth to see the stone on Thanksgiving day, go to High Pole Hill in Plymouth for the Day of Mourning where various people of indigeonous backgrouds, along with the Wampanoag, pay homage to the history that America conveniently forgets. I've been there many times. It's a very solemn and enlightening experience about how things have been in the past and in many cases, still are.

I think it a well written piece. But when I think of a white liberal Ferraro dosen't come to mind. In fact most main stream so called liberals are not liberals at all, more like right of center, something I kind of suspect of Obama, but hopefully not. The media always like to blow up these things like they are important. Most real liberals know that the church has always been at the heart of the political struggle for the black community. It's a good article and makes the point, but it's pretty liberal on the definition of liberal.

This kind of stuff just breaks my heart. The struggle local schools go through and then bomb threats, vandalism, etc. These are cases of just one or two kids that are ignorant of the fact, as so many kids are, that the community pays for this selfish behaviour.

I have to disagree with Capemom. It was government deregulation that brought about these monopolies (1996 Telecommunications act - Clinton)and allows them to operate with impunity. I think one really needs to know what Net Nuetrality is and how Comcast has violated its trust. For more in depth go to freepress.net an excellent resource for details on the need for media reform. On the FCC - They should stick with their original charge of looking out for the American people in terms of signals over the airwaves and a level playing field for access to communications and the invasiveness of same instead of being political hacks with private interests agendas. They've been very naughty lately. I was glad to see that for once they were giving a megamedia conglom a headache and in the process Comcast got caught for typical underhanded tactics.(though legal)
Deregulation should really be called "regulation by the CEOs and the Boards of Directors." If you think it worked try deciphering a phone, cable or electric bill.

Symbolically it is very hopeful indeed. Especially on the world stage. However a lot of damage is done and there will be no quick fixes. "meet the new boss, same as the new boss." I think most folks here are missing the point of this - read "The discussion is to track students to work or higher education, after their rigorous tenth-grade MCAS endeavor: An “easy fix” in cutting costs and carving an effortless road to graduation."
I believe the writer is saying that once the test is passed that administrators are wanting to concentrate their efforts and limited resources on those going to college and allowing a dumbing down of the curriculum for those going directly into the workforce, all in an effort to keep drop out rates down.
Personally I think it's high time that this time around in local budgets that the cost cuts should be in administration at schools. It seems that after they ruthlessly cut everything else their 4% hefty yearly raises are always in tact.

The problem is advertisers or should I say, the modern pimps. What used to be confined to the red light district in the dangerous part of town is now allowed in everyone's living room. On demand porno is a good example. Although if one partakes I would suggest they be hesitant as the cable co. has all your personal information, including what you may order by title. Need I remind folks of the "AT&T Your World Delivered" to the US government last year. Watch what you watch.

My old school favs: Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, The Untouchables (considered quite risque at the time because of violence) Andy Griffith $ Don Knotts, The Invaders, The Original Star Trek, Tom Terrific, Foghorn Leghorn, Deputy Dog, Yogy, Boo boo and pic-a-nic baskets, and when I was very wee... Jessica - The Crowne Point is a pretty posh place. I'm not going to add anything as I anxiously await part 2. I know two or three women living in P-town, professionals, who hope to find companionship there. Had dinner with them recently and I had to laugh, "You want to meet a nice man in P-town?" P-town has changed a lot since I came there in '93. I left and moved to beautiful Eastham in 2005. There's a lot of bitterness there where the only real business is real estate, which is not booming anymore. There are a lot of people hanging on by their fingernails and many are bitter about having to struggle with piles of money everywhere. There is no middle class there anymore. It's the haves and have mores. The real interesting carachters left in the late 90s.... Part 2 please.

This election is going to be soooooooo ugly. I wonder who the media will finally choose. You can bet it will be the ones with the most money as the huge media conglomerates are salivating openly knowing that soon most of that money will be theirs. The great thing for them now is that the FCC has given the go ahead even after much public outcry to allow even more cross ownership of newspapers, TV and radio stations in the same markets. Damn - CCT dumped my message cause it was too long... I'm not going to type it over. However, I will say again that it is important to remember that this company was doing military contract work. Kevlar vests for American soldiers, how ironic. America's addicted to cheap labor. The "illegals" issue is a red herring that flies in the face of NAFTA. US jobs go overseas while the polarization on this issue maintains the status quo for our corporate overlords and provides the usual scapegoats for the dwindling middle class. One can see this throughout the history of the USA. Our "leaders" will not solve this problem, it's too convenient. Works every time.

Let's see - 375 illegal US military contract workers wages for a year = 1/2 of the quarterly bonus of a dashing, worshipped CEO.

Well at least they're not making the troops make or pay for their own vests anymore, maybe. And as long as there is dirt cheap labor around America won't have to stop it's wanton consuming or sacrifice anything for the war.

Perhaps if they do decide to do what they do best, pray, it will all magically disappear. Why always from the poor and not each other? This being a Democrat created problem doesn't hold much water with me either. In my work I see all the Outer Cape Selectmen's and town meetings on a regular basis. Wages are hardly going up. All the towns that I serve are short-staffed and struggling to accomodate all services. Way more than half of the Outer Cape Towns' Selectmen are Republicans. But it's not a partisan problem locally. I see a lot more compromise and understanding locally than I ever see at the state or federal level. If it wasn't for that, the Outer Cape would be in even more trouble. Washington and Beacon Hill would do well to approach the numerous financial problems that face us all as we do locally. Tip O'Neil said "all politics is local." We'd have a lot less to contend with if our Washington counterparts really approached their office with a duty to real public service as most of our localally elected officials.

They absolutely create the need, actually invent it. They'll pimp the dead body of this endowed woman the way they pimped her to begin with, the old man she married, and his money, her dead son too. There is really no ethics involved in something like this, this is all about eyes and revenue. They make people think that this is what they want. This is all a matter of market research. Appeal to the most base instincts in human beings, sexual titilation and fear of death and you'll always have an audience - survey shows. It's just a question on when people draw the line at it being too much, which seems to be a pretty high threshold these days. A lot of the time people confuse propaganda as being solely the result of politics, but it's real origins and stylistic mannerisms are a result of market research. Oddly enough, as I type, I just heard Anna N. being compared to Jane Mansfield. Gotta love these people that will pimp people beyond the grave. Pretty predictable.

100 years ago indeed you were on your own in the face of disaster. However, in those days (as is the case even still except communities are more limited by economics due to insurance rates in part), neighbors would assist and take care of each other. When we started giving legal entitlement to insurers we took it out of the realm of the community relying on bureaucrats rather than each other. Perhaps the answer is returning to the community dynamic in a more modern sense. Just an idea. It would take a lot of commitment and coordination. Perhaps the answer is to take some of that equity on a community level and have it serve the local community as opposed to it going off-Cape as so many corporations do with the money they take in locally. This is a problem all over rural America. Money leaving the communities without participating really in the local economy.

It certainly isn't by accident. I watched CNN for the first time in a long time today. It amazes me as to how the copyreaders must be souless zombies who just inflame and incite curiosities about the most trivial. The interesting thing is that if you look to who owns what networks and so on you see the real agenda emerging as books, movies, music, artists, drugs, various products, etc. are being cross promoted through infotainers (most of today's copyreaders or eh...hem Journalists) as well as supposedly news stories about same are all part of the mega-media push to sell anything. Let's go a step further - Joan Bonnett Ramsey is a good example of branding an image from a news item and then continuing to use the same image as a tease or lead-in to other things, stories or commercials to mesmerise until the next commercial. Make no mistake that these large corporations that own almost all media, Viacom, Time Warner, (who brought us the lovely Boston scarefest) Disney, and Fox are using their technological resources, which are vast, to fine tune this most resourceful propaganda machine.

Never had this problem with my good ol' 8MM. Tarnation, dag gummit! I'm always right cause I'm always right. I'm wrapped in the good ol' red, white and blue and no one dare to disagree." Realize there is a large contingent of people in this country that are tired of both the right and the left. The partisan nonsense is allowing the democratic process to stagnate while the people continue to get their pockets picked by the elite. "Stay the course" has been the mantra of the right and the left for over 20 years now. Conservatives are radical, liberals are conservative. Partisan Horsesh&* going absolutely nowhere.

While you ol' timers are getting excited about congratulating yourselves don't forget to take your extremely expensive blood pressure medicine. Remember what happened to the dinosaurs.

Dodge ball teaches absolutely nothing about life other than the fact that violence can be sanctioned. It has become outlawed because of liability issues. Kids were getting hurt. Where I come from this "sport" was called War Ball. I saw kids getting slammed in the side of the head from a ball thrown at the utmost velocity from three feet away. If kids want to play sure, have their parents sign a waiver, for those kids who don't consider being victimized by the school bullies a team sport, let them opt out.

No argument about the equal time of D flippers.

It's time for the real majority, moderates, to hold this country's leaders accountable to the sovereign people. This polarized back biting back and forth is not only boring but exceptionally unproductive and definitely not by accident. Problems are not getting solved. No matter who seems to be in office things seem to continue to degenerate. The middle class is getting hoodwinked while their pockets get picked and men in suits talk trash and sensationalize bad manners that infect any real discussion.

So a litebrite flipping everyone the bird. Sounds like Turner broadcasting to me. Wow, what a nice marketing campaign. I do think the whole thing is ridiculous, but I hope they let the gorilla ad people have both barrels, using public property for their petty little TV show ad campaign. The thing is, a few million dollars in fines pale in comparison to how effective this little publicity ploy is. They probaby planned it that way from the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised if the original call to the police was from an agent of the gorilla ad network/Viacom, Time Warner, etc. These lowlifes would scream "fire" in every theater in the country to sell another prescription to cure RLS, the disease they made up.Just goes to prove what I say all the time - What left wing liberal media? I really take exception to the left wing media references. They weren't very left in the beginning of this fiasco of Bush's. They were doing what they do best, which is being the most sophisticated propaganda machine the world has ever seen. The bourgeois bordello mediascape is nothing more than a device to hypnotize monkeys with shiny objects and weird sounds and getting them to buy things that they don't need.

I'll bash Bush, no problem. Superstitious religious fanatic, pretend cowboy (courtesey of the bloodsucker pop culture/screwing machine) Rich boy/groomed puppet.

I mean for chrissakes, does someone really believe this was about bringing democracy to the middle east? Com'on, it's oil, duh. It is an unbelievable mess that these bozos in the administration created and no matter what happens a lot more people are going to be killed.

The US had the no-fly zone. The US had a strong presence in Saudi Arabia and the most sophisticated 1st strike machine in the world at its disposal. Containment was working. But the world-wide corporations wanted more.

umassjsp - I just got to correct the over-used and Rove branded talking point, "liberal left-wing media." I prefer to think of them as the "the complacent frat boy league of opportunistic blood sucking media" basically they'll go to bed with anybody. It's no accident that the "4th estate" has been replaced by the proverbial red light district by taking it off the street and putting it directly into everybody's home, cars, children, etc.

I didn't hear them being called "left wing" when they beat their sponsor's drums for war.

Iraq is a shameful mess. We will not be safer from terrorists. The USA is now hated more than ever. Now the region is more unstable than it was before and whether the US stays or goes doesn't hide the fact that a lot more people are going to be killed regardless. It's just a question of who at this point.

A war started by frat-boys led by the biggest never-worked-a-day-in-his-life frat-boy they could find. A puppet/bafoon that crapped in his cage when he was asked to serve.

This mess is entirely man-made and we will be paying for it for years to come with money, lives and maimed human beings. "Support Our Troops" was a nice catch phrase for shooting down detractors in the past, but I think people for the most part are intelligent enough to know these days that "Support The Troops" is not a black and white statement anymore. My position is Support The Troops by bringing them home and getting a real coalition to rebuild Iraq. We never should have gone to begin with, but it's broke and we broke it. Now because of some bozo rich fratboys trying to gain political capitol and do some favors to their fratboy oil buddies and corporate overlords we're obligated to fix it.

God is not really in the picture as far as I'm concerned.

The fact is that as long as the American public is willing to ride the corporate consumer gravy train of mindless fear mongering, pandering, and basically turning the media landscape into a red light district of one-size-fits-all, localism in journalism will never recover. Our democracy is suffering for it, as corporate managed media has a tendency to lean towards a facist and excepted expression that everything is for sale, including any kind of dignity or journalsitic pride. My original point was this - because Chavez called Bush the devil the original article insinuated that Delahunt and Kennedy were traitors. That's why I called it typical blather.

I guess it would be easy to bash Chavez for that, but it was not his administration that plunged his country into poverty. He is the first ever indigenous (indian) president of that country. He's an interesting guy. If you read the entire speech before the UN you'd see that there was a lot more to it than that soundbite. He's done more to help the poor people in his country than any other before him. Is he a terrific guy? I don't know - is Bush a boy scout?

The thing about Latin America is it has been subject to imperial exploitation for hundreds of years. This has laid its people low. The interesting thing now is that I heard on NPR just the other day that Chinese military people are visiting Latin America on a regular basis. Since China holds a lot of the notes of the US national debt we'll see where the Monroe Doctrine is now Moses.

Typical Wall Street blather... If American oil companies didn't price gouge during Katrina and in the aftermath and to this day actually, perhaps concerns about Venezuela and Chavez might be of interest to analyze in depth other than "Bush is the Devil." People like Bush & Reagan can say things like "Evil Empire" "Battle between Good & Evil" & "The new crusade" on the world stage because America is all powerful. I don't see the difference. I didn't see US oil companies offering the American-poor consumer a break as of late. Corporate America prefers to give say $50,000 to a charity and then spend a million five telling people about how charitable they are. So Delahunt and Kennedy got some poor folks some gas so they don't have to choose between eating and heat this winter. What's Exxon done for you lately?

What I see in the CCT article is that Patrick is staying true to his campaign strategy, being willing to listen to both D & R ideas, something there hasn't been much of in this country in general for the last 15 years. I think radical right wing and obsessive left wingers have got to start compromising and showing moderation in their positions. The way things have been going with all this bickering is to encourage the sovereign people to give up on their so-called leaders while there are nothing but foxes in the henhouse and corporations are the reality of who is the running the US of A.

I was quite happy with the results of the latest election. But as an independent I feel that if the corruption and deadlock continues that all incumbents should be shown the door.

I'm not against Cape Wind, but I'm not for it as of yet either. I want to hear something beyond the bickering. It's also definitely not the reason I voted for Patrick. Nice piece. Religion in the public square? A travesty really.
Christ would be turning over in his grave (not disrespectful) if he saw the idolatry and hippocracy that has been carried out in his name over the centuries. If it hadn't been for the printing press the multitudes would still be mystified by all the mumbo-jumbo spouted by the Catholic church.

If people of faith really wanted to perpetuate Christ's message they would lead by example of charity, love and kindness, as opposed to blind obediance and insisting all be as they are; damning all who disagree.

Christ sealed his fate when he threw the money changers out of the temple, it gave the Theocons of the time their best excuse.

Many "people of faith?" - Many people of little faith pretending to be people of faith and persuing an agenda of power - not very Christ-like. They should take thier money out of campaign ads and get some counseling for themselves and give the rest to the poor and not tell anyone about it. The "people of faith's" egos are unbearable and gross to anyone of reason and true piety.

Conspiracy theories aside - The fact is my wife and I were looking at these theories last night. You see we lived next door to where the Tim McGuire murder took place, you know - at the condo full of drug dealers in P-town back in 2003. Of course we had asked the P-town police to do something about it a number of times. It wasn't until 2 weeks after Tim's murder that someone from PPD got back to us to say that there had been an undercover drug investigation of the Conwell St. residence and that was why they had not responded to 3 diffferent phone calls.. Long story short - we were told by the officer that we were meeting with, part of the Cape DEA task force at the time, was part of that investigation and pointed out what he saw us while he was doing a buy at Conwell with a "black" snitch whom he didn't identify by name. We remembered him being there although he was in a cop disguise. The thing that made it stand out was that he was driving a rather brazen red convertible that was in our parking space.
Last night my wife and I realized that "black" snitch was probably McGowan
