I,m pretty sure that no negotiated contract can be brought to Town Meeting for funding if the seectmen have not allowed that. In that sense, they, and no one else are where the negotiation buck stops. This fire fighter's union open Station 3 thing makes the union look like a bunch of hot heads. Not a good way for a union to look, particularly in tough times.

Some day, maybe we will have a society in which corrupt, self-promoting politicians can never get elected to anything. I don’t know what it will take. I guess it may take some kind of hair trigger sensitivity toward the self serving, self enriching type jokers who should never, ever, ever get a single vote from anyone. The other extreme is the “crazies” who come across like cartoon characters or a Jimmy Stewart congressman and bring to the table a special kind of ineptitude. What we need is an honest person, that’s all. In medio stat virtus. Consider the present mess with the moronic governor of Illinois!

The disparity in legal budgets probably has something to do with unique, one of a kind, litigation and a tendency among some selectmen to be into risk taking more than another group of selectmen. Maybe high legal costs means they are pushing the envelope more and will not be intimidated by fear of litigation.

In response to: How "big box" stores are squeezing you
In response to: How "big box" stores are squeezing you
It has been my experience that there are basically two kinds of stores. One kind wants your money and to heck with everything else. The other kind wants you to be a satisfied customer. It doesn’t seem to depend on the size of the store or the nature of the franchise. The only generalization I can make is that the probability of being around in maybe ten years goes much more to the second type than to the first type. There are clues out there as to which type of a store you are dealing with. Sales staff turnover is one thing. If you see a new face every time you visit the store, that is an indicator that people are not a priority there. Staff knowledge of inventory is another. If you run into a clerk who knows less about product than, say, your dog or cat, the chances are it’s a type one store. Sales can sometimes give a clue. Sales which are too good to be true or perhaps carry a lie (going out of business?) almost always belong to a type one store. When you make a move to return something to a type one or type two store you can tell in about five seconds which type store you have.

It would be interesting to have some sense of the cost of on-line advertising compared to print advertising. Of course the issue of circulation and size of readership is critical. This would be a good 800 word blog piece for someone to put together. Most of us have no idea. If you told me that a quarter of a page cost $500.00 and that an ad on the net of equivalent size cost $15.00 I would believe you. Does anyone out there have any comparative numbers?

I was at that meeting and know the faces of most of the school employees. The crowd was mostly young parents in my judgement. It was great to see them showing up, but they shouldn't have left. School employees, some of them anyway, know how bad this looks and probably would not have voted and then left. Some may argue that school people packed the hall. An alternative theory is that young parents, who care deeply about the schools being taken apart, finally are showing up. Of course the real test will be May 6 at the election.

Interesting topic. I would hope school children might take field trips to local cemetaries. There are many lessons in history, civics, even math to be learned there. Art classes could do rubbings. This might help in a tiny way to build a sense of reverence. I have read that when you walk the fields of Gettysburg you feel as if you are in a cathedral. Art theft seems like a particularly heinous crime because it strikes at the higher order end of things in our cultural heritage. Stealing money or cheating at bid rigging is a terrible thing. Stealing art is even worse because our souls are tied into our tradition of artifacts.
I would think that Mary LeClair, a shrewd, experienced politician who has always exuded integrity, might be resourceful enough to get to the bottom of these art thefts. If she is protecting people, perhaps she will come around to an awareness of what is the greater good. Even if it is discovered that some idiot took these to the dump, at least there will be some type of closure on this.

It seems to me that this article is really on to something. It’s a great blog project to seek reform of this corrfuption. There are art collections all over the place in public buildings. They are in town halls, schools, libraries, county buildings, hospitals and probably even fire houses. Who is in charge of inventorying and assessing these treasures?
Does anything exist to prevent, say, a retiring employee from taking one home? Or some employees giving away art to beloved employees? Is it going to be necessary to make laws to protect these pieces of public property?
I can’t believe that Peter does not get the inventory he is promised. I do know that there are many public officials who sincerely believe this is not the business of anyone but them. There is an appalling lack of understanding of the open meeting law and what it means to be custodians of public property.

Romney’s remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference was a begrudging concession speech given by a politician who has claimed but not won the crown of conservative spokesman. I have been waiting for Senator Kennedy’s move. It seems that the appeal of Obama over Clinton is based primarily on the ability of Senator Obama to inspire and capture the imagination of the youth contingent of the Democratic Party. That is an attractive notion, certainly way ahead of hatred and fear of the Clintons which is being fed to us on a daily basis by the cable news punditry. This diet of anti-Clinton venom may start to bore the public; it is a long way to November. If the tables turn and the voters start to exercise greater independence in evaluating the qualifications of Senator Clinton, and if Bill Clinton can figure out a way to tone down his advocacy, anything could happen.

The reality is not that endorsements can look good or bad, but that they always are mixed blessing and are good and bad at the same time. Celebrity politicians, all of them, have good and bad baggage. That baggage often travels with the endorsement and makes it always a two edged sword. One problem with the endorsement game is that people keep score and for those who do not wish to go to the circus, this creates pressure to act. And even when action does eventually come, there is another universe which opens up about when it came. Did the endorser hold back too long, and why? Are there regrets from those who jumped in early? Endorsements are truly mixed and one thing which is certain is that endorsements are much less than meet the eye.

If you have a pretty daughter get her out of here or she’ll end up marrying a landscaper/carpenter who loves his nights out in the bar. In spite of incredible fawning and congratulating by MSNBC commentators Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews, “he hit it out of the park,” the “Faith” speech by Mitt Romney seems to have missed the mark in many ways. First of all, any of the presidential candidates could have given this speech, which essentially affirms one’s belief in God and the Creator’s historical importance to the nation. Secondly, it teaches us virtually nothing about Mormonism, a a strange and secretive denomination Thirdly, it appears to declare war on the separation of church and state, a concept which President Kennedy promoted as a centerpiece of his remarks. I see a lot of self serving hypocrisy in the speech.

Interesting piece. I have a feeder on my living room window and spend hours watching my “babies” come and load up. The annoying squirrels have had their day, too, but thanks to the bird store and certain kinds of seed plus the creative sliding of my storm windows, I can beat them back.
If I want to study my visitors closely, I must move slowly toward the window because I think they see me and are scared off. I have a couple of books but am not good at identifying species. Some are tiny little things, some are big and fat. Some seem to shoot up vertically with no effort at all, and are gone as soon as they get to the feeder. Some seem to be able to zip around sideways.
Somehow, the regular feeding of these lovely creatures seem at least as important as politics in Pakistan or the debates of presidential candidates.

Some are tiny little things, some are big and fat. Some seem to shoot up vertically with no effort at all, and are gone as soon as they get to the feeder. Some seem to be able to zip around sideways.

In response to: What's a SEPAC, and why do I care?
The secret of a good SEPAC is both parents and school officials working hard not to make each other defensive. This is very hard to do. First of all, a group of disparate parents brings all sorts of perspectives and motives to the process. A group cannot control all members all the time, but it can work to reveal all the hidden agendas at work and it can promote civility and diplomacy as a number one value. Group members also need to learn about lobbying their friends, neighbors and school committee members. School officials must learn to deal with the needs of families and students. (Often the same, but not always.) School people need to respond clearly and rapidly, without jargon, and they need to understand that there are no secrets in the public education business. Finally, they need to accept that parents are not putting in time as advocates for their children in order to keep taxes down. Parents are looking for direct services for their kids and they understand they are not free.

Welcome to the blogosphere down here, Peter. I’m sure you will find the water just fine. I am a former public school sped administrator and can relate to the issues before you in advocating for your children. In the old days, when I worked, we used to get thank you notes from sped parents. That’s not the case anymore, but I hope you and your kids get the respect you deserve from special educators and that needed services are not sacrificed on the altar of a low tax ideology.

Being pissed off helps some people be public speakers. It shouldn’t be that way, but the intellectual flame is so dim in some that they need righteous indignation to become engaged. They should come to grips with the dilemma that making yourself feel good is not the same as solving problems.

This is very funny and touches a nerve in all of us. Don’t think you are a klutz because you are a young woman. As an old man, I’d get in the same trouble. Partially because I have some paralysis problems in a hand, but mostly because it will never sink into my thick head that you must have the right tools to do an adequate job. Years ago when I’d tackle a project, I might have made twenty trips to the Tru-Value store and might have spent ten times more than I expected. I knew those guys better than my wife and kids. You seem to have arrived at the importance of tools, so good luck as you start over. This proves to me that just because you are a hell of a good writer does not mean that you are a hell of a good carpenter.

I find that there might be greater understanding of the US Constitution if we could carefully distinguish between the notion of "shall make no law" and the "separation of church and state." There is a big difference although some feel we have outlawed religion in the US, the reality is just that the government can't endorse one religion over others. The use of the word "secular" is particularly odious. It is part of Jerry Falwell's legacy and preaches, erroneously, that we can and have kicked out God from our affairs.

Your anger would be better understood if you could be a little more specific beyond your reference to Bulger’s ridiculously large pension. I am a retired public employee living on a pension and having some of my health insurance paid for by the state.
I am not bleeding the system, but to read your sweeping generalization, you might believe I am. I once knew a local finance committee member who was astounded, startled, and angry that public employees in our town had a better health insurance cost split than he or most of his friends had. Unless you can get specific, you sound like him.
Pensioneers who have given their working lives to public service should not be expected to balance the budget so other can live in two million dollar homes and drive $60,000 vehicles.

The sun stroke factor re. old people alone is a reason to stay indoors. Why didn’t they have five or six gyms or civic halls used simultaneously? I don’t think it’s liberals or conservatives. The usual suspects of church, unions, judges, schools, and parents are in the picture. Some of this is perception only because I have read that in the days of Socrates and Plato people were tearing their hair out about the indiscretions of youth. If we have been on a downward slope since then, we would be in a much lower place than we are today. The place is different than ever before, not necessarily worse. Robert, you did a nice job listing all the factors that make us different from 50 years ago. For me, it argues the case for more money for school budgets, drop out prevention programs, drug counselors, and alternative education. It wouldn’t hurt if we could figure out a way to light a fire under the clergy. One last point, divorce does inestimable damage to youth. Commitment can be thrown away too easily.

It’s about life and the inflammatory rhetoric here is just as confusing as that of the pro-life crowd when they call pro-choice people murderers and toss around color photos of killed fetuses. If I could think of the opposite of misogyny, I would use it. Katy, let the record read that some of us distinguish in a major way between the innocent unborn fetus and the mother carrying it around. Some of us see partial birth abortions and all other abortions as totally evil, no matter what.

I get the feeling that there is a double standard at work. On one hand we extol the virtues of free enterprise and canonize people like Milton Friedman. Then, when entrepreneurs make it big and walk away with millions we criticize the process as if the business owes us jobs. We seem to want it both ways. I suppose that is O.K., to want it all, but that is not realistic most of the time. I come down on the side of a social conscience for all businesses but I’d like to think I have it dusted off all the time, not just when my narrow self-interest is threatened.

We could have one or two flakes wafting down in mid-afternoon and people would be packing up for several days off. The hysteria was so bad, thanks to the Boston media, that I started to deny that I was charged with calling off school. I would say that my dog did it. I got up at 5:00 AM, opened the door to let out the dog, if she wouldn’t go there was no school.

Somehow it seemsa like business as usual that a bunch of employers and business owners are whining and screaming about additional financial responsibilities imposed on them by goverment. Would that the world was all a big non-profit Little League that relied on revenue from raffles, bake sales, and pictures. There will always be people getting screwed. Perhaps universal health insurance is an effort to shift the screwing.

I hope you realize these are old problems. There is always a kid at a cash register in a store who can’t make change. The issue about facts is known as the “process vs content” debate. Teachers and principals do put the wagons in a circle, as croftB suggests and that is frustrating. Everyone believes they are an expert on school because they have been to school. There is a great deal of misinformation about educational policy. No school committee would adopt a foreign language curriculum which discounts the importance of vocabulary and grammar. I don’t know what “entertained” means. It is a slippery word

Of course we need to lighten up. These children are not our personal property…we hold a lease on them, we are stewards charged with rearing them. The recipe we must use is love and respect. Not all that easy all the time, but like it or not, that is the recipe. It helps greatly if we can count ourselves second and the kids first. This is a nice piece, right on the money.

Some people just don’t get worked up at the specter of illegal aliens. We do not see breaking the law by sneaking into the country to be a big deal. Some can remember stories their grandparents told about “Irish need not apply,” I recall in the 50’s the Puerto Ricans were everyone’s whipping boy. I remember as a child memorizing and being inspired by the verse on the base of the Statue of Liberty. No amount of statutes can take away from what many think is very close to the heart of the American democracy. When a law is not or cannot be enforced, there is a likelihood that it is a bad idea to begin with. Like prohibition or gun control. Illegal aliens are underdogs in the fullest sense of the word. Some believe that rooting for the underdog is a great American value.

The case for getting away from it all and having time to reflect is attractive probably to everyone, but I think I would miss interaction with others because that is a good way to define who we are, to get a grip on ourselves. Of course, if we read or write or watch TV or listen to music when we are on that cot that is interaction.
So the big question is: When people say they want to be a hermit, do they want to get away from it all or do they just want to get away from an obligation they may feel to interact with and to engage the world?
I never read Thoreau but I bet there are some answers in his stuff.

If we make too little we are embarrassed and want to keep it a secret. If we make too much we are a little ashamed of ourselves. We also like to promote the image that we have material wealth because we earned it, because we are sharp and made some good decisions. There is irony and miscues in all this because most of us don’t mind driving around in $50,000 cars and living in million dollar houses.

Graduating from high school should not be celebrated as the end of anything. It sets up a climate that something has been completed, and we all know that it is a beginning, not an end.

I appreciate CWN and try to follow it closely. Among other things, I keep my eye on my family members who have careers in public safety here on the Cape. It must be difficult to walk the fine line between reporting events and bending too much to the differing perspectives of public safety agencies up and down the Cape. My opinion is that journalistic independence is primary, regardless of who might be offended or put off in any department or labor union. Surely, I hope you do not feel compelled to edit your photographs. My experience suggests that some police departments have a strange proprietary attitude about information, and don’t really seem to buy into the fact that public business is precisely that. Keep up the good work. I read all the thousands of hits you get in the “What’s Hot” section and wish I could bottle what you are selling for my blog.

This means nothing or less when presented in isolation like this. The real number is tax rate times assessment which yields the tax bill. My suggestion is this: If the 700 mile wall they are going to build will have any width, we could put bicycle paths along the top, like in China. Developers could take a look at developing little shops inside the wall for the general public to make purchases. I think Taco Bell could make it there, on both sides, and on the Mexican side you could sell an assortment of ladders and human-sized sling shots.

If you are going to crunch school spending numbers in that way, you should include in your search for the $150,000 the money needed for transportation, energy, telephone, debt service, maintenance and custodians. Also, the lion’s share of the money you are trying to explain is for counselors, librarians, nurses, aides, teachers of art, gym, music, and special needs. Don’t forget, schools are expected to weigh, measure, inoculate, insure, feed, photograph, test and baby- sit kids. I am sure there is waste, but perhaps things are not as simple as you see them.

Pope Benedict may have done a great deal to frame the needed debate about geo-political religious values and how leaders might examine connections surrounding religious diversity. For instance, thinkers and writers need to dwell on the inappropriateness of suicide as a route to heaven, the sources of religious rage, the leadership role of clerics and the pros and cons of separating secular and sacred interests. This problem is not limited to Middle Eastern Islam only or to bomb builders in London. We have dangerous brands of fundamentalism in America which exploit religious wedge issues to advance agendas. World religious leaders would do well to aggressively commit to constructive problem solving in this area.

Do you really believe that teacher salaries are high enough or that class size is small enough? How do you know this? Do you have a crystal ball that tells you this or is it just a hunch you are pursuing? Obviously it is important to you because you want to unelect and not elect people who feel differently. I respectfully disagree and believe that this is the kind of knee jerk thinking which can discredit the conservative movement. For you it seems to be all about not spending money. There is more to life than money.

I suppose I do try to be a practical Catholic. While Europe may explode, the Vatican will not. Most of the action today is in Latin America or Africa. I read a lot of Catholic blogs and what’s coming out of Europe is not very impressive. No one goes to church there, for starters. Also, most governments seem to be really hostile toward Catholic values. Many of these missteps by both the governments and the church are proof that church and state is a rotten mix.

The church faces an enormous personnel problem. Although its divine connections will allow it to last forever, I think it is enormously wasteful to exclude married people and women from the priesthood. The argument that Jesus was unmarried and a male is very weak. There is no scripture of which I am aware that excludes married people and women from the priesthood.
I don’t look for this to change much however. In my reading of Vatican documents and the Catholic press, there does not seem to be much support for this at all.
Last week Sister Mary Luke Tobin died at age 98. She was one of 15 female advisers at the Vatican II ecumenical council in 1962-65. In her autobiography she wrote this about her role: “True, 15 women among 2500 bishops was hardly a quota, but it was a beginning.”

Of course, how do you reconcile your view with the personal wealth of those running for governor? In both parties. It is totally disgusting that the prizes go to the richest. The only tool we have to fight this is to be super-skeptical toward campaign ads. It is usually nothing but blue smoke and mirrors anyway. It makes the case for voting with your gut, not your mind.

I am convinced that the strong accent is a function of (1) being very verbal; and (2) usually only talking with each other. You hear some families in Northern New England with hardly any accents and others which you can barely understand. The difference is that the non-accent people talk with much more diverse populations. The 365 day farmers do not.

The way I look at it, the issue is not tax rates or property valuation or averages. The important thing is how much you give them for property taxes this year compared to last year. Out of pocket. All the talk about rates and assessments, while necessary in the interest of fairness, just seem to confuse things.

There are many forms of fear which interfere with freedom.
Fear of looking stupid or losing credibility is one big reason. This one is far deeper than fear of losing your job or some kind of funding or a special relationship with someone. Some people are fearful of squandering their opinions on minor things. They want to save it for bigger things.
As far as the fears politicians have, these are legion, and probably summed up by fear of not going the way the wind is blowing or fear of losing an election. Too often I feel politicians will say almost anything if they think it will help them get ahead. These politicians don’t necessarily take a position on things, they just talk the issue to death. You see that a lot on abortion, immigration, the quagmire war and locally on the sales tax roll back matter. I guess we can call that fear of telling the truth, fear of letting it all hang out.

This is not the first time we have read about the necessity of the Muslim people to police their own and straighten out this aberration. The West doesn't have much of a chance to do anything meaningful. Most of us don't even go to church and boast about how we are no longer part of the religion of our parents. One must wonder how well this arrogance serves us.

Open houses are two way streets. It is a time to check the teacher out and a time for teachers to check out parents. Teachers need great skill at these lest a loud mouth parent monopolize all the time and often gives no other parent a chance to say peep.
The parents can often come dressed like crap, but I have seen teachers at these things who dressed like an out-of-work- custodian or a drop-out from a septic system pumping truck. I wonder if they have ever heard of a change of clothes?
There was a time when my wife and I did double duty at a high school open house and still didn’t cover all the classes of our kids. One difficult teacher would frequently not show up. He was always sick or something. His colleagues cured him of this by putting up a clip board on his door saying he was sorry he couldn’t make it and inviting parents to sign the list if they wanted a detailed phone call from him.

Some of my reactions to the inconsistencies you point out:
Abortion- You are absolutely correct
Illegal immigration- Your name calling and sarcasms unnecessarily squanders your credibility. There is much more than what you cover.
Public prayer – This inconsistency is true, but I would hate to wipe out congressional prayer and I suspect that is what would happen if we take a magnifying glass to the line between church and state.
Hanging up ten commandments. To admit to specific differences in situations seems like no big deal.
Same sex marriage – A bit of a stretch to go to the brother sister, sex, no sex thing. (You forgot to say that it is politically correct to say “Same sex” not “Gay marriage.”)
You must love the pope who condemns the dictatorship of relativism. This was an interesting posting. I have my own list of frustrating inconsistencies which have a sort of liberal spin. Nice blog.

Four of my five adult children, in their thirties, live on the Cape and have mortgages. They give it all to their mortgages, both have to work, kids are farmed out. To add insult to injury, some of the stupid school committees down here will let your child go to kindergarten all day if you can come up with 2 or 3 thousand extra dollars. Otherwise, the public schools give your kid a half day of kindergarten only. What is really outrageous about this is that I don’t think anyone even sees this as a problem! These young families with tiny houses and rusty cars are compelled because of competition to pay double their property taxes so their kids can go to kindergarten like everyone else. I can’t believe this has been allowed to happen. There seems to be not many people with consciences in public elected positions. We all experience the lack of people around here to take care of our needs. Need a dump run or a carpenter? Good luck. Finding tradesmen and professionals down here is like finding someone to insure your car. But at least we have the lowest property taxes in the state. I wonder why?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on fast baseball players. Are Jeter and A-Rod considered fast? They sure are charismatic.

Maybe you should tell us where we can go to see these flowers and smell them. Unless, of course, you and WB can figure out a way to get aromas on-line.

Kids need to understand this sacrifice. That is why Massachusetts law mandates a Memorial Day program of some type in every school each year. This is a very high minded thing...the highest.

I would think that science could settle this debate once and for all. How fast does the ball come off the wood4en bat vs. the aluminum bat?

Something doesn't do it for me regarding Deval. Perhaps it is that only millionaires need apply to be governor of Massachusetts. Perhaps it is his Abe Lincoln born in a log cabin stuff. Beware.

I probably have many problems with the Catholic Church but would sooner cut off my right arm than leave it. That is a very interesting issue. We probably need to think and write about it. There is great foolishness in the church but some of us buy all the essential stuff.

The Dennis Police station is really crowded. It is not a jail they are building...much more is involved in public safety than a jail. This project has been one of how to do things the right way. This space is overdue; it has been successful in part due to the efforts of a brilliant chief. I do hope, however, that they will not erect punishment stocks at the front of the new station!

A big problem is what is 10th grade knowledhe? Of course we want them to know things, but who decides, and how do we know they are right? I know 13 year old boys who will flunk biology but can dress a deer in the forest with great skill. One person's 10th grade knowledge is another person's illiteracy. I am just saying that it is a hard nut to crack...not bad or dumb...just a hard one.

I lay in a hospital bed near death as I recovered from surgery that would keep me hospitalized another six months. I was in and out of coma and the 9/11 attack seemed surreal…but so did my entire life in those days. I have this image in my head of giant chains hanging from the sky, dangling to the ground, anchored in a cloud or something. I have tried to think a lot of why I thought of that picture. I think it said that the world had been blown out of the sky and all that was left were chains that used to hold it. These were morbid days.
