this looks like a typical Massachusetts boondoggle. Who are these "third party venders" and how will they wind up getting the money. I suspect comcast has there fingers in this.

If they only work 20 hours, why not open the lane for the 4 Morning and evening high traffic hours.
10/09/09 @ 8:14 am
At the risk of being repetitious, the solution is to open the lanes in the morning and evening and extend the length of project The excuse that it is to cold to work in the winter is a bald face lie.

In response to: Perry pushes Tort Reform on Beacon Hill
I have just experienced trying to sue a doctor for what was to me obvious malpractice. In the process I discovered the the burden of proof is so elevated that the doctor basically becomes the key witness in his own prosecution. I short it is very very hard to win a malpractice case let alone get a law firm to take it on. This is the most misrepresented issue I have ever personally been involved with.

I am really getting to distrust the big newspapers. This kind of poor journalism is now the norm not the exception.

California has had a version of this law for over 20 years and the use of Pot has not gone up but the time wasted in court has sure gone down plus the revenue is helpful. Oh well it took 30 years to learn you can make a turn on a red light without the world coming to an end.

In response to: How would Single Payer work for you?
The system we have now cannot be sustained so we probably need to go to a single payer plan. Half measures tend to avail us nothing. Just be prepared for a new set of problems more than solutions.

In response to: How would Single Payer work for you?
I have studied this for many many hours and the biggest problem we face are as follows
1 most people do not understand the trade offs of both systems
2 most people think the problem is the cost of insurance (premiums)
3 most people are used to getting good health care in a timely way
4 most people think this is national problem with a national solution

consider this. Every kind of system available is being used in some country. Its not a guessing game. A single payer plan in most countries has not significantly lowered to cost of health care. That is not to say that saving would not be achieved but if I tell you that having the government take something over will lower the cost, do you want to bet your life on it? There are three states in this union that a single payer plan would prove difficult if not impossible. California (bigger than Canada and the UK) Texas and Florida. The huge population of emigrants both legal and illegal would crush the system in those states. Most Canadians will tell you the system works better in some provinces more than others.

In response to: Sales tax be damned
The local option taxes are exactly that. Each town votes on the option of raising or lowering and local option tax such as the room tax. The amount of the increase is part of the vote. So meals tax in Brewster may be higher than Barnstable.

In response to: Universal Health Care-Why?
Roberts facts are spot on. The problem is that US citizens over burdened by the huge premiums they pay are willing to go with any plan that promises them relief. the two largest government plans, UK and Canada, are as filled with problem as our own, just different problems. These are pointed out in the above article. Many people would benefit from a single payer plan and many would suffer. Most Americans do not know which is which and go with the party line. The real problem is ignorance. If you prefer the single payer plan and actually know what it entails than fine. In my experience most folks just want change and dont care what it is. Many will be very very sorry.

The Globe announced (3am this morning) that the Guild had conceded and the 20 million reduction is now a reality.
05/06/09 @ 8:43 am
This is pretty simple. If the Times owners have truly concluded that closing the doors or selling the assets is the only option to a rejection of the offer then the union may simply be out of jobs. If it is a bluff than we will soon know. The longer the Globe mgt extends the negotiation period the greater the chance this is in fact bluff. The arrival of the Kindle is a little known and potentially game changing technology. All the more reason to think this may be a bluff. the Kindle has the potential to turn the industry around and any well informed newspaper owner knows this. Imagine a newspaper with no print cost and a 20% reduction in staff cost. This could be the case in less than a few years. I see too much upside for anyone at the Times to fold a paper the size of the Globe under these circumstances.

In response to: Pols raise Sales Tax 25%
The most bothersome aspect of this tax increase is that it is a permanent increase to solve a temporary problem. When the economy turns around we will still be stuck with the tax, the government will use the surplus or should I say waste the surplus. This is what the "rainy day fund is suppose to prevent.

The problem with any scientific controversy, is the politicization of the science. Majority wins, is not good science. environmentalism as religion is not good politics. The question is not global warming but what political solutions best serve the public and the world.

In response to: Policy or politics?
I am overjoyed that the GOP is out of power but referring to their attempts to block legislation that they disagree with as obstructionism over looks the fact that that is their job. The concept of two parties in agreement is usually the product of dictatorships. Out government works because it is adversarial. The love of bipartisanship is sentimental nonsense and a sure formula for disaster. Please quite calling people commies and fascists just because the lean to the extreme of their parties philosophy. Mac Carthyism showed the folly of that approach and it works both ways.

I generally agree with the idea that if you build to near the water thats your bad. However, here on the cape we all live to near the water, thats one of the reasons for the high insurance rates. I have to wonder what the detractors would do if they were one of the wealthy property holders.
06/14/07 @ 9:18 am
I would be more impressed if you did not resort to pajoritive terms like "swells: and nouveau arriviste. You also underplay the $1000,000 they are willing to pony up.
Being wealthy is not a crime and any normal human would be concerned about the potential damage to their property from cape cod storms. If you don't think the work in necessary, fine, than just say so. Buy the way, how long you live in a place is usually not a very good gage of character and historical knowledge is not a residential requirement.

No matter what the issue or the side you are on. The state of Massachusetts is run by one party. That single fact is what creates the erosion of citizen voter rights. Now that we do not even have a republican governor all decent will have to come from within the one party. The judicial branch is the ONLY thing that can protect us from the tyranny of the majority. If that is over ruled, than we will be a state that operates outside of the democratic system.

In response to: Get Involved in the New Administration
I do not believe that rail transportation to the cape would be impacting enough to warrant any tax dollars but I would be open to an economic evaluation.

The idea of a 4 year 4cs is interesting but again needs to be evaluated as to the cost too reward dynamic.

Affordable housing is concept that I simply do not accept. No one has a right to afford to live were they want . That may be what some people would like but it does not exist in law. The law of supply and demand, however, will cause wages to increase if labor is scarce thus increasing the ability of workers to afford housing without subsidy. The idea that subsidising housing helps the employer by providing a larger work force, may be true but why should I pay for it? Let the market do the job.

The answer to the question of costs on the cape is - that what the market will bare. Government intervention is not an answer. If you cant afford it, move.

In response to: What Cape Wind most assuredly won't do
The debate on the efficacy of wind turbines is not as important to me as the question of who controls the environment they reside in. When I lived in California the same questions arose over the proper use of desert land. The nimby factor is a fair one and one that will follow any large energy project of any sort. The real question is who gets to decide. Will it be the state or the feds?

In response to: You know, the silent kind of debate
When entering into debate, it is quite common for the person with the greater knowledge on the subject to win. Such victories over a recognized opponent of stature are in fact the usual goal. Why then would Carter disqualify Dershowitz on the basis of being uninformed instead of exposing that weakness through the debate itself? The answer I believe is that Carter is not confident that he can prevail even against an uniformed opponent.

In response to: Wake up and smell the taxes, Cape Codders
It seems to me that the main point of the article is a fear that we will go back to the tax and spend approach of the Dukakis era that resulted in junk bond status for our borrowing needs and caused us to use a high percentage of our tax revenue on debt interest. I think that's how the republicans gained control of the governors office for so long. That's why this should be of real concern to democrats. If we wait until if happens it will be to late wont it?
