Oh, also 1-800-GOOG-411 is a great, free, directory service from Google.

Yes, this is fake. It's unfortunate these things keep circling. See Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/cellphones.asp

The best cellphone "trick" I know of is that you can use your old cellphone to place emergency calls. So, that old cellphone of yours is actually useful.

Tim: minor corrections... Mary Dunn Road, not Lane. Also, check the title ("is" should be "in"). Thanks, keep up the great work.

Fixed Road...don't see "is"

Oops, I renamed Brewster (guess I just wanted to do that since a lot of people don't know what Whitecaps are).

This has put the league in a tough position and was a bad PR move for MLB. Way to come after the little guy, MLB. Why didn't MLB step to the plate and protect the trademarks earlier? The CCBL has been in the national spotlight for over 20 years.

With that said, if the teams choose to abandon their MLB nicknames (which I don't see happening), then they will likely try to adopt a nickname to match their logo. This puts Bourne in the toughest position, as picking a new Native American name is taboo. Also, Y-D is in a tough position, because they will have to get creative.

Off the top of my head:

Bourne Tribe
Hyannis Osprey
Y-D Red Caps
Brewster Breakers
Chatham Blue or Pride
Harwich Seadogs (or would Portland/MLB come after us then too?), or Skippers, Seafarers

In response to: Got great images? Print great photos.
Congratulations, Christopher. You certainly deserve the ribbon--I love that shot.

I was wondering about buying from Imagekind. Is that the best way to get your prints, or should we stop by your gallery? I honestly feel weird buying from Imagekind because they seem like a Cafepress-like website (a quick production process with customized products). Thanks.

In response to: Quick, drop that scanner!
I'm 20-something and sometimes use the self-checkout. They are especially convenient if the regular lines are long (or if the self-checkout line is completely empty) and you only have a few items. Regular lines seem faster with a lot of items since I don't have to do everything myself.

I haven't used "Shopping Buddy" (the scanners) yet, but in theory they should help cut down on time. If they track all your purchases (by card # I presume), then you could see what you buy on every aisle and not miss anything. Then, if you can't make it the store and need to use Peapod, you could enter in your card # and see what you normally purchase. I don't know if it works that way, but it should.

I do, however, still want my bagger if I have a ton of stuff. It really helps.

The Wii probably adds up to more value than anything else they stole. I wish we could put a general lookout for Cape Cod for anyone trying to pay with a ton of $2 bills. That usually draws suspicion anyway.

Not quite a new book, but still a good one. While we didn't talk about steroids, we interviewed Jim Collins for Codball.com this past summer.

Thanks for the map.

$400,000 ($230,000 for the purchase of the lights and $170,000 for the installation).

The lights are up, but the Mets still need donations for other improvements (press box/concession stands). Visit http://hyannismets.org to donate.

Good to hear about the osprey platform.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Cape Cinema in Dennis. That's the best place to see movies on the Cape (alongside the Nickelodeon and the drive-in). Anyone hear anything about the Shaughnessy Theatre (formerly of Hyannis)? Seems like it's never coming back...

In response to: Catching a Leopard by the toe
Monposset - I think people are mostly still angry about all those free CDs that came in the mail. What a bad PR move! I always kind of looked at AOL as the poor man's Mac, because both were trying to accomplish the same thing (reach out to non-computer people). These days, AOL is struggling to survive and trying to appear cool.

I made the switch to Mac in 2005. I started with an iBook G4 and I just bought a MacBook this past summer. I made the jump to Leopard the afternoon it was released. It's great. Vista Ultimate also lives on my MacBook, but Apple just did it better. Vista is bloated, annoying, and XP still does things better. Microsoft continues to go in the wrong direction, and Apple has continuously improved OSX to the point that it is by far the best operating system on Earth.

What a strange day... who drinks in the middle of the day, and who breaks into a car AT BURGER KING right in front of the entrance? And what is a 21 year old doing on Cape Cod after Labor Day? I guess he'll be here forever, since he won't get a chance to go to college if he stays behind bars.
08/31/07 @ 8:46 am
Wouldn't it be a little smarter to break in to the press box during the season? Well, I guess that's why the kids are in school.

Those hipp---I mean, that young couple made me late for a Red Sox game. Well, actually they only probably delayed me 5 minutes and made me say "wow" when I passed them. I was wondering why they were just sitting in there. Must have been a little uncomfortable...

In response to: Dangerous intersection scene of another crash
I hate making a left at this intersection personally. For many drivers, it is unclear who has the right of way (the people coming off the Rt. 6 ramp or the service road)? The left at exit 6 isn't much better but at least that road is being worked on. Regarding "gizmos," that is certainly a problem but it all boils down to people needing to pay attention to the road and not speed. We could create every law in the world telling people not to call, text, drink soda, watch a movie, change a CD, read a book, and eat hamburgers while driving but it's not going to cure the fact that some people are just careless.
06/10/07 @ 5:26 pm
I believe this is "Motorcycle vs. car," since it was a station wagon and not a van. Something really needs to be done about this intersection. Hopefully they are fixing it with the 132 upgrades.

Ringo: It's the BK in Hyannis, not the one near exit 6... (don't eat at that Subway though!)

umassjsp: I don't know, but I hope they are required to post their ratings. That would sure scare people away from the General Store though!

Western Union. I have never seen/heard of Western Union being used for anything but scams. After all, they do not do telegrams anymore. I have a hard time believing that the homeowner decided to use Western Union. It was probably requested by the renter because it was easy to cover up his identity. (Western Union has taken steps to protect their customers from fraud, but this is mostly focused on the Nigerian scammers). Red flag.

Finally, travel costs? Red flag.
03/08/07 @ 4:44 am
Regarding the rental scam... this is a very unfortunate incident. But, there are lessons to be learned.

First, the check was written for $500 more than the total of the rent (it might have been for utilities but I will make a point anyway). If you ever post something on Craigslist (esp. electronics), then you may receive an offer that is more than what the item is that you are selling. It sounds too good to be true, and it is. A red flag should go off.

Believe it or not, but scammers are not the smartest people in the world. The ones that I have encountered typically use poor grammar. Red flag.

In response to: Still stiffed on gas prices
The price difference was negligible for a while, until the recent price drop (well, the one that is occurring everywhere BUT Cape Cod). I left Waltham, MA on Saturday where the price was $2.15 (for 87), and on Sunday in Hyannis it was $2.36 (of course, when I needed to actually fill my tank).

Thanks for blogging about this. Keep it up.

Monponsett: were you replying to my comment?

If so, let me elaborate... Rice and Sutter both had short, but good, careers. Both of their careers had about 12 years of Hall of Fame-worthy play. That's what I meant by Rice is in the same position as Sutter. Sutter also had the additional complication of being a closer. And Rice (as Robert mentions) has the additional complication of playing a third of his games at DH.

Jim Rice and Goose Gossage will get in next year. And Rickey Henderson will in 2009.

The points you raised about Jim are valid, but they are what has kept him out of the hall until now, and he will get in. Even if he is not voted in by the Baseball Writers of America Association in the next two years, the Veteran's Committee can put him in.

Bruce Sutter was in the same position as Rice since he only played 12 seasons. But, he was finally inducted last year.

In response to: Bus Radio
It's pretty sad that not only is there a bus fee, but the kids also have to be subjected to advertisements via BusRadio. I actually don't think the older kids mind too much, since they either hitch a ride with their older friends, drive themselves, or have an iPod. And, it's not like they have a choice in determining the radio station anyway. The problem, as you discussed, is with the very young children.

Looks like the Chatham thieves are a bit smarter than the ones here in Barnstable. "A DVD player and several DVDs" probably doesn't even add up to $50. Stealing a DVD player right now is almost like stealing a VCR in 1997 (when DVD was first introduced).
