GE has a patent on variable speed generators in the US which means a Vestas 2.o MW machine must be downgraded to 1.8 MW because of this patent. The variable speed technology means you get 10% more energy than a comparable Vestas machine this requires more maintenence and upkeep. Vestas makes a great turbine but they have difficulty competing because of the patent and dollar versus euro rates. All the worlds wind turbine manufacturers have sold out all their machines for the next several years. The industry is growing extremely quickly with installed capacity up 40% or so last year. By any ones standards this is a huge growth in one year so there is no worry that the industry will falter. Because of steel prices and huge backlog the machines are more expensive and this has effected the cost margins for Cape Wind. Ofshore wind is much different that land based machines with higher costs but with higher wind speeds so its a tradeoff.

you can post all the reports you want and youll still NEVER be an expert in the field of Wind energy economics or any other field in wind energy. I worked in the industry for several years and have an insiders understanding how the turbines operate. I wont comment on the EIS and other environmental issues because I dont care about them to be honest, the project will or will not go forward. However none of you here has any real experience working on wind farms you just quote others and act like your experts when your not. I spent way too much time dragging my ass around the woods doing site assessment work and investigating potential windfarm locations to take anymore nonsense from you fools.
I spend my days now working on the sewering issue on cape cod which is so much more of an environmental concern than a bunch of wind turbnies. Cleaning up nitrogen in the estuaries is my goal, which is something Im proud of while the rest of you fools cry about development. If it was left up to you and capri we would be back in caves eating nuts and berries... ps ban me I dont care

You obviously have no idea how wind energy equipment is purchased and installed. General Electric will be required to provide guarantees and warranties that the turbines they sell to Cape Wind will work for the life of the project. Do you actually believe that GE will go bankrupt because of a project the size of Cape Wind?? GE has a vested interest in seeing these wind turbines work as claimed because its the fastest growing sector of energy production.
Thankfully we now will have a Governor that is not beholding to the rich property front owners that have provided the majority of the money to The Alliance and its paid employees.

Im just waiting for The President to give Rummy his Freedom Medal for outstanding goverment service...pleeze
Rumsfeld disregarded the advice of the Joint Chiefs in how to invade Iraq, he thought he knew more than Shinseki who spent his entire career in the military. Rumsfeld also ran roughshod over Colin Powell who has forgotten more about war that Rumsfeld will ever know. This micromanagement of the Defense Department by an individual that was never elected and did everything he could to avoid duty during the Vietnam War must not be allowed to happen again. The military has been depleted to the point that they've become vulnerable to a major conflict elsewhere in the world. How long would it take to redepoly if China invaded Taiwan or North Korea invades South Korea.

The thing is there are already limitatations on who can enter into a contract of marriage. I cant marry my sister, mother first cousin etc.... because theres already laws controlling marriage then having the law changed should be allowed to voters. I would personally vote against changing the constitution to prohibit gay marriage but if enough voters have signed a petition then the vote should be held.

So in other words youd allow a project to kill thousands of sea birds if only you can save 50-60 dollars a month on your phone Bill. So thats what a dead bird is worth... funny how we will allow such enourmous impacts for a little bit of money... but not allow minimal impacts for a small amount of money...

Stilagr made many important arguments that you have so quickly dismissed and belittled. His argument of hydrogen fuel systems versus batteries has a lot of merit. There DOE is working with private companies to develop light weight non lead batteries that would be used in electric cars for energy storage. The 2 reasons electric cars arent viable today is energy storage density by weight and recharge time. The new batteries would be plastic based and weigh around %10 of traditional lead acid batteries. The other issue is recharge time which I dont have any information for at present, but will search for later.
Hydrogen storage is a main concern for using fuel cells in cars. High pressure tanks, Metal Hydrides, absoption materials, sodium boro-hydride all have the potential to be used for storage, but each has issues with deployment. Presently the cost of fuel cells is high and will remain so for some years until mass production scale takes hold.
I can build an electric battery based car in my garage that could reasonably go 100 miles on a single over night charge.

I live in sandwich and I support laws that prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants. Why I posted what I did is because the state of massachusetts already has laws against hiring illegals. The problem is we dont enforce the laws we have, so by the selectmen making another law that wont be enforced they are in my opinion pandering to their base constituency which happens to be republicans. Im all for building a big fence on our borders, spend the money here not in Iraq. We could offer all the illegals presently here a path to citizen ship by giving them jobs building the dam fence. Spend 2 years in a public works system and then you can become a citizen, or serve in the military for a certain amount of time. Make the process difficult enough that only those willing to work for it can apply...

The National Wind Coordinating Committee (NWCC) completed a comparison of wind farm avian mortality with bird mortality caused by other man-made structures in the U.S.
The NWCC did not conduct its own study, but analyzed all of the research done to date on various causes of avian mortality, including commercial wind farm turbines. They report that "data collected outside California indicate an average of 1.83 avian fatalities per turbine (for all species combined), and 0.006 raptor fatalities per turbine per year. Based on current projections of 3,500 operational wind turbines in the US by the end of 2001, excluding California, the total annual mortality was estimated at approximately 6,400 bird fatalities per year for all species combined."13
A reasonable, conservative estimate is that of every 10,000 human-related bird deaths in the U.S. today, wind plants cause less than one.

Other studies reported 28 kills per year for urban cats and 91 kills per year for rural cats."

The only data I got from CW was the distance from the shore. The information I have is from being an expert in the field, I have installed numerous meterological towers across New England, site work investigating proposed wind farms, interconnection issues and I even helped design and build an experimental vertical axis wind turbine. I think this gives me a bit more standing when it comes to renewable energy. Just because I eat chicken, watch birds fly and talk to poultry farmers doesnt make me an expert in your field. Dont act like your an expert in mine...

5 things off the top of my head that could actually create jobs and provide housing on the cape.... in reality the base will see tumbleweeds rolling across the runways and become a ghost town if certain individuals have their way. You know, the open space crowd that resides in front of the courthouse....
In response to: Is a windmill coming to YOUR backyard?
These machines will also need some kind of inverter to convert from variable AC to DC then back to AC... otherwise the turbines must use fixed speed induction motors running at grid frequency...not likely

I remember talking to a business associate from the Netherlands. It was interesting because he explained that its very difficult to become rich in the Netherlands because of the increasing tax rates on incomes. I sympathized with him knowing how the US is setup, then he talked about his daughter that is handicapped with mental retardation. He explained how she will be taken care of for life by the Netherlands goverment so he didnt have to worry about putting money away for her care.
When you think about it the only differnece between the US and the Netherlands is how much... how much in taxes, how much in services. In the US when you start becoming wealthy your then able to afford accountants and lawyers, so that you end up paying less in taxes as you create more wealth for yourself. Im very happy to see that Warren Buffett is giving his billions to the Gates Foundation, hopefully they will find cures to some diseases and give the medicine away for free.

proposed windarms 1880.6 sq mi(per barbara)
1880.6/3593224 = 0.0005233
or 0.05233% or for every square mile of turbines there are 1910.6 square miles that dont have turbines
"The windmills are coming!! The windmills are coming!!" chicken little voice
In response to: So much for that alleged lack of public support for Cape Wind
First off Im nobodys cohort.... I have never met Jack Colman...get that straight.
I love how you quoted that report about negotiating leases...did you read directly above that??
"Wind farms could have a positive impact on commercial fishery. Research and development in this area indicates that windfarms could form a breeding area for certain fish species."
The biggest impact on fisheries are the fishermen themselves. They catch fish to sell to consumers, this is commercialism at its finest. However, like the area Cape wind wishes to use, the fish belong to the people of this country, not just certain fisherman. The fisherman must have a licesene to fish from federal waters, just like Cape Wind will need a licesnse to operate. The two activities can co-exist together with some restrictions on both sides. Cape wind must allow fishing between the turbines, and the fishermen must respect the private property of Cape Wind.
Permanent habitat alteration?? after 25 years remove the strucutres if so desired.. the turbines have a lifespan remember.
Good job Monpansett...lol

"The largest construction project in the world" are you kidding??? Have you heard the the three gorges dam in China?? It displace close to a million people during its construction....
In response to: So much for that alleged lack of public support for Cape Wind
How can you claim the loss of 24 sq miles of nantucket sound for fishing. The lease to allow Cape Wind will absolutely allow fishing between the wind turbines. The oil rigs in the gulf of mexico are the best place for fishing, boats appraoch the platforms and fish next to them all the time. Id never support the project if Cape Wind could prevent fishing amonst the turbines... wont happen...
Your starting to sound like Chicken Little Barbara... The Windmills are coming..The Windmills are coming

The only fishermen that might be impacted are the draggermen... and this type of fishing has the most impact on the environment. Recreational boating fishermen will be fishing off the turbine foundations...guaranteed. Why does the goverment sink ships to make artifical reefs?? because they become fish habitats. Why is ok for one commercial enterprise, ie fishing, to take precedence over another commercial endeavour, ie wind turbines. Not everyone eats fish, but everyone uses electricity....
Why dont you go fight against the LNG plant thats coming to Fairhaven instead... LNG is far more dangerous than wind turbines... wind turbines dont explode...

Thats right and no one ever drives on the edges of the road...especially not here on cape cod. Put the wind turbines on the moon and some spaceship might run into them...anything is possible. We cant completely eliminate risk in our daily lives... I have a better chance of being run over by a bus full of nuns then running into a windturbine... besides those singing nuns are causing noise pollution and are scaring the birds...

In zero visibility all boat owners must use caution and go slow enough to avoid other objects. Its the boat owners responsibility for safe operation of their vessel. Its kind of like removing all the street lights because some idiot might run into one...
