And after excepting campaign contributions from PMA Group, who Mike was quite friendly with.. so much so, he took donations from 9 family members, Mike was able to secure some earmarks for defense companies (which PMA represented), who profited nicely form the war that Mike objected to.

On the firing of mortars from Gaza, the mission concluded that they were indiscriminate and deliberate attacks against a civilian population and “would constitute war crimes and may amount to crimes against humanity.” It added that their apparent intention of spreading terror among the Israeli civilian population was a violation of international law.

US Representative Michael E. Capuano tried to distance himself in March from a potential Capitol Hill scandal, donating to charity $64,500 his campaign committee had collected through a high-powered lobbying firm that is the subject of a federal pay-to-play investigation.

But Capuano has failed to return or give away at least another $47,500 that employees of the firm, PMA Group, and its associates, had given to a separate political action committee that he created in 2005, MASS PAC, according to a Globe analysis.

The background of a December 2001 article in Vanity Fair about the social life of a young Congressional aide captured a snapshot of Mr. Magliocchetti in his element. Two days after the Sept. 11 attacks, he and a PMA colleague, Daniel Cunningham, were hosting a rowdy table of lawmakers at dinner in a private room in the Capital Grille that included Representatives Mike Doyle, Tim Holden and Robert A. Brady of Pennsylvania; Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey; Representative Michael E. Capuano of Massachusetts; Representative John B. Larson of Connecticut; and former Representative John Baldacci of Maine, now governor. (Mr. Larson reportedly led the group in a sing-a-long of Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Rolling Stones songs.) All were members of an informal group that followed Mr. Murtha’s lead. Asked recently about the night, representatives of the lawmakers declined to comment.

Monday, Capuano sharply criticized one of his opponents, Attorney General Martha Coakley, for saying she would not have voted for the bill if it had the same restrictions. Just one day later, Capuano said that if the abortion provision makes it into the final bill, he would vote it down.

Capuano says his vote in the House Saturday was aimed at keeping the bill alive (what a guy), and that he hopes U.S. Senators will strip the abortion provision from the bil.

Boston Herald:

U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano has missed more Capitol Hill votes than all but nine of the nation’s 435 members of Congress, skipping key tallies this year on veterans issues, defense spending, highway funding, he
missed a series of votes just last week, including a bill to fund a new veterans hospital in Washington state,a crucial bill to extend unemployment benefits and another to extend federal assistance to small businesses in September, and the June impeachment of disgraced Texas federal Judge Samuel B. "He is not beholden to the special interests as others"

WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Mass., received $60,000 for his campaign from donors tied to a firm probed by the FBI, an analysis of the firm's giving indicates.

Capuano, whose congressional district was once represented by John F. Kennedy and Tip O'Neill, also inserted earmarks for three of the lobbying firm's Massachusetts clients into recent defense spending bills, the analysis by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics said.

The high-powered PMA Group, specializing in obtaining billions in earmarks in the defense budget for clients, shut down this week, two months after news broke that the FBI had raided its offices in November.

Yes, it's true that Bush carried nine of the 11 states where the gay marriage bans were on the ballot in 2004. But it's also true that, unaided by gay marriage ban initiatives, Bush won those same nine states in 2000.

Yes, it's true that, in the aggregate, Bush increased his percentage of the vote in those 11 states by two percentage points between 2000 and 2004. But across all 50 states, he upped his percentage of the vote by three percentage points.

And yes, it's true that turnout spiked in those 11 states by 18.4% between 2000 and 2004. But nationwide, turnout was up by nearly as much -- 16%. And in Red America (the 31 states that Bush carried in 2004), turnout was up a bit more -- 18.9%.

In short, toting up all these numbers, it seems safe to say that the 11 gay marriage initiatives had no across-the-board impact on the 2004 presidential race.

First off, enough with the "Obama hater", I don't hate the man, I dislike his policies and programs.

I'm sure you liked the "stimulus" when it was first proposed, it was going to get us out of this mess and put us back on the road to prosperity. It isn't working and we're being buried in debt and the dollar is loosing value daily. Cash for clunkers failed to live up to its billing as well and again, cost us money that will have to be paid back. Excuse me for being leery of a gov't health care plan being shoved down our throat with a price tag like we've never seen before.

By the way, last week it was California and today it's Massachusetts admitting that the employment claims from the stimulus are bogus. Yes, I've become a non-believer.... when will you?

Evergreen Solar Inc. said it is moving the panel assembly jobs currently done at a plant in Massachusetts to China next year. The announcement came as the company announced that it lost $167 million in the first nine months of this year."

The Boston Globe reports Wednesday that while Massachusetts recipients of federal stimulus money collectively report more than 12,000 jobs saved or created, that number has been inflated by miscounts, erroneous figures, or claiming jobs for work not yet started."

The fact is that, in recent years, Medicare administrative costs per beneficiary have substantially exceeded those costs for the private sector, this despite the fact that, as critics note, private insurance is subject to many expenses not incurred by Medicare. Contrary to the claims of public plan advocates, moving millions of Americans from private insurance to a Medicare-like program will result in program administrative costs that are higher per person and higher, not lower, for the nation as a whole.

I don't "cheerlead" anyone, I just don't happen to buy into conspiracy theories like you. As odd as it may seem to you, I just don't happen to believe that our government was involved in taking down 3.000 american lives. Yes, I will challenge you and others to prove your claims.... so far, nothing.

I'm glad you have a job and I hope you enjoy what you do. I've had several jobs in the past cleaning bathrooms, restaurants and homes. cru,

You woke up this morning and the first thing you do is to attack and call me names. I'm not sure why, is it because I tend to challenge your ridiculous claims? You never seem to answer my challenges.. I think we all know why.

I'll try to explain it one more time. You come here and air-out your dirty laundry... you don't take any responsibility for your misfortunes but tend to blame anyone and everything except yourself. You can't expect people not to challenge your claims. This is a blog, it's what people do.

Your claim about the hospital and the "validated threat" really bothered me. For the sake of the victim, the hospital and all those involved. You had no basis or fact to make such a claim but it true cru fashion... you did anyway. That's called irresponsibility. There are people struggling on both sides dealing with this and they don't need someone with no clue of what happened making such a claim.

Now if you have a problem with what I've said, first answer why you made such a claim and we'll go from there. Otherwise....put a lid on it.

"Since the 1930s, the Supreme Court has been reluctant to invalidate "regulatory" taxes. However, a tax that is so clearly a penalty for failing to comply with requirements otherwise beyond Congress's constitutional power will present the question whether there are any limits on Congress's power to regulate individual Americans. The Supreme Court has never accepted such a proposition, and it is unlikely to accept it now, even in an area as important as health care."

“State health care reform has had some unexpected results,’’ suggested Tim O’Brien, senior vice president at Blue Cross Blue Shield’s headquarters in Boston. “The actual costs have been much higher than what were anticipated when health care reform went into effect in 2007.’’

dk.

As reported yesterday in Edmonds.com.

Taxpayers ended up paying an average of $24,000 per vehicle for the cash-for-clunkers program over the summer when sales that would have happened anyway are taken into consideration, says car-buying research site Edmunds.com.

It's not about hating Obama as you suggest, its about where this country is headed.

I said "happy days" weren't here just yet... and it may be longer than you think.

"The US Department of Commerce has issued its report on the growth of the US economy for the period between July and September, and the 3.5% growth rate has some people cheering. However, most observers note that much of the growth has been boosted by government programs and spending, and the foundation remains unstable. "

Well Ike, things aren't much better on the left.... most schools don't allow their students to say the Pledge of Allegiance in class anymore... apparently it may offend somebody. Speaking of school, did you know the left pandering to teachers unions have resulted in spending more on education than ever before and kids are nowhere as smart as they use to be? Don't mention God anymore Ike, just today an employee of Home Depot was fired for wearing a pin stating "One nation under God, indivisible", that's right Ike, the left has no use for God in society anymore.... we do however allow our Muslim brothers opportunity to pray whenever.... don't want to trample their rights. You'll also be happy to know men can marry men. Did I mention the current President is traveling the world apologizing for our past aggressions? He's doing so while spending more money than any other President ever.

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can.

The tenant was two months behind on his rent and refused to respond to us. Such an uproar about Rush buying into the "Rams" not the Cardinals. Why do you think not a word was said when rapper Jay Z bought into the New Jersey Nets? Here is just a sampling of his lyrics (I cleaned them up a bit). But this must be a good "element of American society".

Breaking News:

ACORN has fired the longtime companion of founder Wade Rathke over apparent concerns about a lack of "accountability" in her work leading the Louisiana chapter in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Beth Butler was the director of that chapter and close to Rathke, whose brother Dale was accused of embezzling about $1 million from the group a decade ago.

Nice job Richard! To use some sports metaphors.... you knocked it out of the park, you hit the triple double, you scored one for the gipper (sorry, couldn't resist). And it only took you 2,496 words, 13,136 characters (no, no, I didn't count them myself, I copied and pasted in Word).

If this blog doesn't get you into the "Bloggers Hall of Fame", nothing will. Not only did you open up with some great bible quotes, you missed: Exodus 17:16 He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation. You then follow with the Tea Party and the Bush's exclusion of meaningful Congressional debate... not that Obama would want to shove health care down our throat... meaningful debate... not.

But you saved the best for last, you throw in your Jonathan Papelbon saver (damn, wait second... didn't he loose that last game?) the dreaded Philadelphia, Mississippi "States Rights"! How many years have you been using that one? 30 ? When do you put that one away and come in with a fresh arm?

I think Steve Wynn (Vegas hotels) has it right, his comments this weekend on FOX:

WYNN: Government has never increased the standard of living of one single human being in civilization's history. For some reason that simple truth has evaded everybody. The only thing that creates an increased standard of living is giving someone a job, the demand for their labor -- The people that are paying the price for this juggernaut of federal spending are the middle class and the working class of America. And soaring rhetoric and great speeches with or without a teleprompter aren't going to change the truth, and the truth is: The biggest enemy, the biggest obstacle that working middle-class America has is government spending.

Arizona; A preliminary hearing Tuesday in the downtown Clark County courthouse has put ACORN on trial for the first time as a criminal defendant.

Until now, prosecutions for voter registration fraud have focused on ACORN workers, and authorities have secured guilty pleas from several who admitted to falsifying voter registration forms.

But when investigators from Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller's office raided the ACORN Las Vegas office, Ross says they found a paper trail that implicated the ACORN organization itself.

"“If the Afghan government falls to the Taliban or allows al-Qaeda to go unchallenged,” he said then, “that country will again be a base for terrorists who want to kill as many of our people as they possibly can.” (probably just a rouse for some conspiracy theory to keep the war going).

However, this weekend he does a flip-flop and is now not sure (despite recomendations from his General on the ground) what his policy in Afghanistan should be.

Although they were all "conspiracies" with "Bushco" they were good conspiracies that he stuck with.

One doesn't have to look further than the "once" great (when Ronald Reagan ran it) state of California to see what's really wrong with this country and what's yet to come when Obama gets finished with it.

"The Golden State has been transformed from what was once known as the nation’s most anti-labor outpost to a state essentially run by public-sector unions. Nearly three in five publicsector workers are unionized, compared to less than two in five public employees in other states. The Democratic Party, which is fully in hock to unions, has controlled the legislature and most statewide posts, with the notable exception of the governor’s mansion, for more than a decade. That means more government workers, higher salaries, and drastically higher pension costs.... the state’s annual pension fund contribution vaulted from $321 million in 2000–01 to $7.3 billion last year."

Richard,

Is that some kind of Lawyer tactic suggesting that I'm "not concerned about exorbitant costs of private health insurance"? I don't remember saying that... or as Bill Clinton would say, "I don't recall".

I'm very concerned with the cost of health insurance, I'm concerned with the infrastructure of the billing and record keeping system as is. I'm concerned about exorbitant malpractice costs doctors have to pay. I'm concerned that the majority of people in this country who receive employee subsidized insurance aren't in control of their insurance plan... bottom line, I think we need an overhaul of the private insurance system.

What I don't think we need is the gov't trying to run an insurance program who's costs will exceed anything we've ever seen.

Well I do agree that we need to take better care of ourselves.

So let me ask you. If you have high blood pressure, you won't take medication to control it? If you have high cholesterol, you won't take medication to control it? If you have high chance of stroke or coronary failure, you won't take medication to control it? If you are prone to seizures, you won't take medication to control it? You get my point.

You live in Somerville. You're familiar with all the bio-medical companies in Cambridge. They spend millions on developing medications to save and extend lives. It takes years to develop these medications, millions of dollars of private/public funding with no guarantee that the drug will be a success, make it to market or approved by the FDA. They do it because they believe they can find better treatments and cures to help people live better lives. Do they make money on their success? Yes, do they loose money? Yes. Remember, they only have a short time to make money before a generic version of their product can be marketed.

This is an article from 2 days ago in the Canadian newspapers.

SASKATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.
Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care.
"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," "We know that there must be change," she said. "We're all running flat out, we're all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands."

Well, Mary, you may find this article interesting:
By Karol Sikora:

Recent research by Sweden's Karolinska Institute shows that Britain uses far fewer innovative cancer drugs than its European neighbors.
Partly as a result of these restrictions on new medicines, British patients die earlier. In Britain, the reality is that life-and-death decisions are driven by electoral politics rather than clinical need. Diseases with less vocal lobby groups, such as strokes and mental health, get neglected at the expense of those that can shout louder. This is a principle that could soon be exported to America.

Karol Sikora, a practicing oncologist, is professor of cancer medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine, London, and former head of cancer control at the World Health Organization.

A few weeks before the "Gates" incident, a white family in Akron, Ohio was attacked and assaulted by a group of 50 black youth. An officer has no idea of the situation he/her is putting themselves in. Crowley did nothing wrong, was professional and followed procedure, that's all we can ask of him. Gates however, decided to play the race card and be verbally abusive to an officer just doing his job.

The 911 tapes clearly state that she said "two men" breaking into the house. The caller, was making the call for an elderly neighbor who was concerned a break-in might be occurring. When asked by the dispatcher of a discription... "white, black or hispanic" the caller said... "possibly hispanic...not sure".

Are the police NOT suppose to ask for a description
when a possible crime is being committed? How would that play out in court counselor? Defense atty: "did you ask for a description of the perpetrator"? Witness: "no sir, I did not want to offend anyone".

Mary,

There's NO evidence whatsoever suggesting Teddy didn't know she was in the car. He himself described his alleged futile attempts at diving down to rescue her. He also claims that Gagnon and the other guy went back to the scene to rescue her. His attempt to establish an alibi at the Shiretown Inn, the numerous phone calls he made seeking advice. No need to rewrite history here.

Mary, you could have possibly saved the Senator's presidential bid if you'd been around to explain what happened. Do you watch CSI or did you come up with this theory all by yourself?

In the 11hrs that passed while Ted was making dozens of calls to the mainland, some believe that their may have been an air-pocket that Mary Jo could have survived in. You do know that the DA ordered an autopsy that was never performed after finding blood on her dress inconsistent with the ME's official cause of death. The autopsy was NEVER performed.

HOW SWEET? From the Boston Globe:
The board of the Massachusetts Connector Authority, which oversees the state's health insurance law of 2006, cut $115 million in funding, or 12%, from Commonwealth Care, which subsidizes premiums for low-income residents.
Even with federal backing, the state may not be able to afford the insurance initiative as designed, because the law did not make any attempt to trim wasteful health spending, said Alan Sager, a Boston University professor no decision has been made about the 28,000 documented immigrants whose Commonwealth Care coverage would be dropped under the budget state lawmakers approved

The Province of Ontario spends nearly half of the provincial budget on health care. This number is expected to increase significantly through 2012. How do you keep up with these spiraling costs? Cut education and other social programs.

Remember, the population of Canada is around 33 million. The US has approx.. 300 million more people.

In addition to the one payer system in Canada, employers and residents also have "supplementary" insurance to pay for medication, vision, and other costs.

I recently returned from Toronto/Ottowa. I was there in my work capacity and we were discussing health care.

We spoke to a woman in her 40's who injured her hip. It was to take her up to a year for the diagnosis and an additional 9-12 months for her scheduled MRI and then an additional 9-12 months for scheduled surgery. That's almost 3 years. Did I mention that she was in pain?

She ended up going to a "private" MRI clinic which shaved about a year off the process. It cost her $ 750 for the private MRI.

These private clinics are starting to appear across Canada. There quite controversial, but some people will go to great lengths to get the type of care we have here in the States.

Now that we know what Global Warming looks like, here's what it smell likes: "Experts say cows are responsible for the biggest portion of the world’s Global Warming. When cows eat grass, it sits in their stomachs and ferments. This causes gas, and intestinal gas will always find a way to escape the cow.One of the gases emitted from cow farts is methane gas. This joined gas traps the warm air surround. This joined gas traps the warm air surrounding our planet and as more and more warm air becomes trapped Global Warming occurs."

snoopy,

You're wrong. The reason the baby is safe, is because the father saw the report on television and turned himself in. It's important in abduction situations to get the information (including pictures) to the public. The best way to do that is through TV.

You can't have it both ways. Better a crying baby than a missing baby.

I guess you could have written this article, which may have made it a little bit more palatable, without the cynical slant towards the golfing elite.

How about a comparison of Tiger Woods with thousands watching from the gallery, nerves of steel as he chips a 20' in for the victory. Compare that if you will to the weekend warrior, case of beer, artificial lures, decked out in their corporate sponsored fishing jacket, trolling around in their 100,000 dollar, over powered gas guzzling bass boat (not that I have a problem with that).

Or how about the undersized high school sophomore, unable due to size, of making the football team, hones his putting skills day in and day out to become the stand-out number one golfer on the team.

So I say to all you golfers out their, enjoy your earth day anyway you see fit. According to US census figures:
"Liberal critics of the 1980s who argue that the middle class withered are half right for the wrong reasons. The proportion of middle class Americans did indeed decline, but this reflected an upward movement of households into the high income category. Meanwhile, the proportion of low income households declined, as more became middle class. The income growth of the Reagan years boosted the fortunes of Americans at all income levels."

bitter,

As I told Richard, I could care less about Limbaugh. I'm curious about your position that he's being forced upon people. Numbers don't lie. Shrewd advertisers know exactly what there getting when they spend their hard earned ad dollars with him.

I await your "proof" as to how he was given his position.

bitter,

If Limbaugh has"monopolized" any markets, its due to his popularity. He started out as any other syndicated broadcaster, started with one station and worked his way up. He was so in demand, radio stations/markets came after him. It's all about the ratings, if he didn't get the ratings he did, he wouldn't be on anywhere.

And the stations didn't "play rush for free", you don't give up 3 hrs of radio time for free. You do it for the money. If you think that in the competetive world of radio advertising, that if broadcasters could make more with a different personality....they would.

Your argument that he was shoved down throats and public airways is untrue. You/I have hundreds of options when it comes to radio stations (at least in larger markets). XTK was the first talk radio station on CC. Why wouldn't they want the most successful radio personality of all time on their station? If Al Franken could have gotten the audience Limbaugh did, he wouldn't have ran for congress.

Ned,

That is precisely why I use my "invaluable" time composing.

I think you have to look beyond the speech in Philadelphia. Reagan also declared himself a "Sagebruch Rebel". I think the man's beliefs were deeply rooted in the 10th amendment for reasons beyond what you and others suggest. Democratic Arizona Gov Bruce Babbit wrote an NY Times op-ed "It is time to take a hard look at state rights" Now if you want to talk about race-baiting, maybe we can discuss Jimmy Carters "ethnic purity" comments.

Again, I'm asking you to offer specific "anti-constitutional" propaganda that Limbaugh is spouting? Limbaugh has "monopolized" the same markets that "left-wing" liberals would die for.
04/18/09 @ 9:38 am
Richard,

Looks like your doing your house cleaning this morning. Does "state rights" ever mean anything but a racist code word?

Also, can you offer some specifics as to why Limbuagh is so dangerous? Personally, i think he's mostly full of himself and more of an entertainer than anything else. Remember, it was the left wing shills like Begala who anointed him head of the GOP>

bitter,

To clarifiy, earners making $90,000 or more "do" pay a payroll tax, up to $90,000 dollars. That tax goes toward FICA SS, Medicare. Don't confuse it with Federal Income or State Income tax. Remember, the employer also pays into that tax.

Also, the top 5% of earners pay 68% of federal taxes. Lastly, contrary to what you may think, under the Bush Tax Plan, high-income earners paid more tax on their income.

It's kind of hard to compare a country the size of Sweden with the US. Despite the recent headlines (and don't think other countries are immune to this) about businesses gone bad, Capitalism in this country has provide the highest quality of living found anywhere. Even poor people are better off in this country compared to other countries.

I was somewhat disillusioned years ago when a friend who worked for a local restaurant told me they buy their clams form Louisiana. Came in a big gallon "paint bucket" type of can. He said they had thicker skins and held up much better in the "fryalator".

Although I haven't been to Capt. Frosty's, I hear its quiet good. I can tell you that Seafood Sams puts out a very consistent product.

piggie,

Here's what you said: "Jeff Perry treated me well went I went
to his store in Sandwich and I don't
enjoy attacking him personally
(although I did make a nice photoshop project out of him on my B-log)
but he's a GOP congressman and I have
to attack his policies to accomplish
an objective."

Did you see the part about "he's a GOP congressman"

No need to use any "search engine", I know that he's not a "congressman". But as long as you think he is...that's fine with me.

Sure you aren't confusing him with a member of the United Federation of Planets"?

If and when you do have a chance to "ask" her, ask her if she's worked since 1965... if so, she's paid for it.

My guess, since she's protesting against socialism, she's probably part of the working class. If not, I doubt she'd be there.

I would imagine that there are many people who normally wouldn't travel the Pike.... may have reason to on Holidays.

I don't think I'd get a transponder if I only used it once or twice a year. The problem is, the Pike management know travel is extremley heavy on holidays and probablly know that those commuters don't have the fast pass. Shame on them for not preparing and having enough toll takers on the schedule. But hey, when you work for the Pike, if you want a holiday off... just call in sick... what are they going to do...fire you?

Fact: The next day, Reagan addressed the Urban League "he was commited to the protection of the civil rights of black Americans (that must have pissed of the klan)
Fact: Reagan signed into law Martin Luther King Holiday.
Fact: Reagan in 1982 approved a 25yr extension of the Voting Rights Act of 1965
Fact: Named Colin Powell first black national security advisor.

Fact: In 1980 Mississippi was in play with Carter narrowly winning it in 1976.
Fact: The Neshoba County Fair where Reagan appeared was highlighted in National Geographic, though some staffers worried about the appearance, Reagan honored his commitments.
Fact: Reagan discussed federalism, programs like education that should be turned back to the states with local taxes to fund them.
Fact: Reagan stated: "And I believe that we’ve distorted the balance of our government today by giving powers that were never intended in the Constitution to that federal establishment. And if I do get the job I’m looking for, [applause] I will devote myself to trying to reorder those priorities and to restore to the states and local communities those functions that properly belong there." Sounds like Conservatism 101
Fact: After hearing the liberals interpretation of his speech, Reagan wrote: “Because I said I believed states should be allowed to regain the rights and powers granted to them in the Constitution, he [President Carter] implied I was a racist pandering to Southern voters.”
