December 14, 2008 Libana For 28 years Libana has taken audiences on an extraordinary musical journey, by weaving together songs, dances and instrumental music of the world's cultures as handed down through the artistic traditions of women. The group's seven singers, who perform in brightly hand-painted silks, are highly accomplished in many vocal styles. Their repertoire of ancient melodies and contemporary tunes is performed both a cappella and with a wide array of instruments including guitar, dumbek, accordion, oud, naqqara clarinet and double bass. The songs range across the Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, and speak to audiences of love, work, friendship and celebration. Libana blends polished professionalism with generous humor and warmth, inspiring listeners with wonder in the commonality of the global community. Since the Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960's, Bill has been singing his songs at festivals, concert halls, clubs, and coffeehouses across the country. In the 1970's he was named "Boston's best performer" by the Phoenix, and a decade later, "favorite performer" by the Reader's Poll of The Boston Globe. He continues to perform close to 200 concerts a year. His radio and TV appearances include "A Prairie Home Companion" and a host of other PBS and network programs. Staines has recorded twenty-two of his own albums, and many of his songs have been recorded by other prominent artists. We're not sure whether it's the traditional folk tunes, contemporary ballads, original songs, gentle humor, or simply the impromptu dialogues between Bill and his audience. But here's a hint: arrive early to get a seat for this annual tradition. Members of The Old Time Bluegrass Singers are no strangers to Woods Hole. Some have sung here more than once with other bands. This goes way back to Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys, an annual favorite at WHFMS from 1974 until shortly before Joe's untimely death in 1985 at age 59. "Old Time Bluegrass Singers" was in fact the original name of "Joe Val & The New England Bluegrass Boys" which, until the mid-1970s, included today's mandolin player, Herb Applin. Although Joe Val became known as the ultimate tenor singer, he usually preferred to sing the lower, lead part on "brother duets" and have Herb sing the higher tenor harmony. Today's Old Time Bluegrass Singers band came together in 2003. Joining Herb on mandolin are guitarist Dick Bowden, Lillian Fraker on bass fiddle, and Terry McGill on banjo. Like the original group of the 1960s, they perform old time country and traditional bluegrass music, including some long-time Boston favorites, from their "Threads" CD released earlier this year. Join us to reminisce and relish the honest, straight bluegrass sound of the "new" Old Time Bluegrass Singers. Don't miss his velvety baritone voice as he paints aural pictures of sailors, seals, schooners and mythical sea folk. Growing up around the boatyards of Camden, Maine, he taught himself to sing and play guitar, and began writing songs based on the experiences of real people he knew who lived on the water. Master of both the 6- and 12-string guitars, Gordon has since made over twenty albums. Many other musicians have also recorded his songs. A teacher of choral singing and writing at summer music camps, and a superb storyteller, he often introduces songs in concert with a bit of their origin and history. "There is something deeply rooted, ancient and timeless to his songs," says Scott Alarik of Sing Out!, "yet he is an utter original." Gordon Bok's unique style is what continues to draw scores of fans to his performances in concert halls, coffeehouses and festivals throughout North America, Great Britain and Scandinavia. Don't miss catching him right in our own backyard. For more info visit: http://www.gordonbok.com/ **** April 5, 2009 TBA **** April 19, 2009 TBA **** May 3, 2009 Joel Mabus http://joelmabus.com/ |
