Don't miss this original bluegrass trio.
Toast and Jam is an original bluegrass trio founded by Tim Dickey and Julie Charland. Bassist/vocalist Laird Boles joined them in 2008. Their music has been described as: “Bluegrass based originals featuring crisp duet and three-part harmonies with unique instrumentation. Soulful vocals mix with deep mandocello rhythms and hot fiddle riffs. Lyrics relay modern human sentiment from love songs to social protest themes.”
While bluegrass is at the core of their sound, their music can also be described as modern folk or Americana, and they also swerve into jazz standards on occasion. They may be a trio, but they typically perform on many instruments: mandocello, mandolin, guitars, banjo, Dobro, flute, ukulele, bass, and mandola.
Four of the ten original songs on their first CD, “Ten Slices” won awards in 2009. They are currently preparing their second release.
The players have long resumes: Tim played 7 nights a week for 15 summers with the Provincetown Jug Band, 1977 through 1991, and has accompanied many other ensembles over the years. Julie has lived in Nashville, toured with David Bromberg, won songwriting contests, and played in the Boston club the Rathskellar when she was 14. Julie and Tim have collaborated for more than 20 years. Laird is one of the most sought-after bassists on Cape Cod. He enjoys working with a wide variety of groups.
