Ptown fall, Lightning strikes in Sandwich
Man injured in fall at construction site
PROVINCETOWN – A man reportedly suffered a head injury after falling about one story while working at a job site in Provincetown. The incident happened at this house being completely gutted and renovated on Bradford Street near Franklin Street around 10:30 AM. The unidentified man was taken to Cape Cod Hospital by ambulance. The incident remains under investigation by officials. Further details were not immediately available.
Lightning sparks house fire in Sandwich
SANDWICH – A strong thunderstorm caused several lightning strikes on the upper Cape. A bolt struck a house at 13 Buckingham Drive in Sandwich shortly after 2 AM causing a small fire in the attic. The occupant escaped the house and firefighters quickly knocked down the flames. Minutes later another bolt struck a home at 9 Jeannes Way in the Forestdale section of town. Reports say the hit caused a television set to explode. Fortunately there was no fire and no one was injured. Several other possible strikes kept Sandwich and Mashpee busy resetting alarms and checking buildings out.
Trooper attacked, Crashes, racoon attack, drug bust
State Trooper reportedly assaulted by driver
HYANNIS – A Massaschusetts State Trooper was allegedly assaulted by a woman who initially refused to stop for him. Trooper Michael Popovics tried to stop an SUV by the airport in Hyannis Thursday afternoon but it refused to stop. He followed the vehicle to what turned out to be the driver’s residence on Baxter Road in Yarmouth. That’s where 35-year old Monfreida James is accused of attacking Popovics. He suffered a minor head injury and scrapes but is expected to be okay.
Driver hits medical office
MASHPEE – A driver escaped serious injury after their vehicle struck the Mashpee Medical Associates building on Industrial Road late this morning. There was damage to the building’s lobby but no one inside was hurt. Mashpee Police are investigating the crash.
Gas leak shuts Route 6A
YARMOUTH – A gas leak temporarily closed Route 6A west of Willow Street early Thursday afternoon. It’s not clear what caused the leak at Abbicci’s Restaurant. Keyspan was able to quickly cap the leak and firefighters ventilated the building. No one was injured.
Officials warn about rabid raccoon in Ptown
PROVINCETOWN – Officials in Provincetown are warning anyone who may have been exposed to a rabid raccoon to get tested as soon as possible. One person was treated for a bite and animal control officer Ruth Ann Cowing has been on alert since the animal was spotted in an alleyway by the Front Street Restaurant on Commercial Street. She told Cape Wide News Thursday evening she believes a racoon caught after acting suspicious is the one in question. It was euthanized and sent to a state lab for priority testing for rabies. It’s believed three other people may also have been victims but left before officials arrived.
Traffic stop leads to drug charges
FALMOUTH – Two men face cocaine charges after a traffic stop in Falmouth. Ofc. Michael Rogers spotted a man he knew to have a suspended license and caught up to his vehicle in Falmouthport. The driver 22-year old Tawan Matthews allegedly had 15 grams of cocaine on him. He was charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws and possession of marijuana. His passenger 26-year Steven Rose of Randolph was charged with trafficking in cocaine.
Route 6 crash slows morning commute
YARMOUTH – A two-vehicle crash slowed the morning commute along Route 6 westbound this morning. The crash happened just before 7 AM by exit 8. No serious injuries were reported but traffic was delayed while the vehicles were removed. State Police are investigating the crash.
Hyannis crash triggers gas leak; Bourne fire
Car hits restaurant, triggers gas leak
HYANNIS – A car reportedly went out of control in an alley and bumped the Sunnyside Restaurant on Main Street in Hyannis just after 10 PM Wednesday. The impact pushed a stove away from the wall apparently causing an odor of natural gas which brought Hyannis fire and Keyspan gas to the scene. The restaurant was closed and no injuries were reported. The damage is not believed to be serious. Barnstable Police are investigating the crash.
Blaze damages Bourne house
BOURNE – Fire extensively damaged a house in Bourne Wednesday evening. Firefighters responded to 225 Main Street shortly after 8 PM after reports a sewer pump had overheated in the basement sparking the fire. Smoke was showing on arrival and firefighters were forced to stay out of the building. No injuries were reported. Onset firefighters helped out at the scene. The fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes.
Mashpee fall, Yarmouth fire, Bicyclist falls into canal

Man seriously injured in Mashpee fall
MASHPEE - A man was seriously injured after falling about 10 feet onto concrete in Mashpee around 4 PM Wednesday. Rescuers called for a Medflight helicopter but bad weather grounded it so the victim was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Further details were not immediately available.
Yarmouth firefighters douse porch fire
YARMOUTH – Firefighters were able to quickly knock down a porch fire and keep the flames from spreading into a home at 601 Route 6A in Yarmouthport. The fire broke out shortly before 4 AM. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
Bicyclist airlifted after crash plunges her into canal
BOURNE – A bicyclist was flown to Rhode Island Hospital Tuesday evening after a frightening ordeal. The woman was riding her bike on the trail along the Cape Cod Canal when she apparently collided with another bike and then fell into the canal. Fortunately she did not get carried away by the current. A Lifeflight helicopter landed nearby and flew the victim to the hospital around 8:30 PM.

Student Pilot, instructor make emergency landing at airport
HYANNIS – A student pilot got quite a scare when smoke began filling the cockpit of the plane he was in just after it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport Tuesday morning. The Piper Warrior similar to this one safely returned to the airport. By the time emergency crews arrived the two occupants were out of the plane and the smoke had dissipated. Officials are still investigating the source of the smoke.

Woman tries to turn Tedeschi’s into drive-thru
FALMOUTH – A Falmouth woman was arrested for operating under the influence after allegedly jumping a curb with her vehicle and striking a support column of the building. The woman then reportedly exited her vehicle and purchased two packs of cigarettes. 59-year old Lois Kaczor was also charged with operating recklessly to endanger.
Man charged with pulling knife
CENTERVILLE – A dispute over missing money apparently led to a man pulling a knife on his roommate. With the help of a translator police were able to determine 42-year old Djalama Antonio DaCcosta had gotten into an argument and accused his roommate of taking the money. DaCosta than allegedly picked up the knife and the roommate fled. DaCosta was to be arraigned Tuesday in Barnstable District Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. Feds will also reportedly be in court to check DaCosta’s immigration status.
Officer injured in struggle with suspect
HYANNIS – A Barnstable Police officer is expected to be okay after being elbowed in the head several times by a suspect. Detective Daniel Turner spotted 44-year old Rufus Rudd in a car on Main Street and knew Rudd had two outstanding warrants on him. When Det. Turner tried to apprehend Rudd, Russ allegedly elbowed the detective in the head several times. Rudd was captured and faces additional charges of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. Det. Turner is expected to be okay.
Man flees cops, captured, damages cruiser
DENNIS – A man was arraigned in Orleans District Court on a variety of charges following a wild scene in Dennis early this morning. Dennis Police were called to a Gage Road residence where a mother reported a vehicle was following her daughter who was in a taxi. As police were taking a statement from the cab driver they heard a scream and saw a man run from the house. Ptl. Henry Jessop was able to quickly apprehend 30-year old Howard Stafford of Harwich. Stafford was placed in a cruiser where he allegedly smashed out one of the windows. Police later learned Stafford had been accompanying the daughter in Provincetown when an argument broke out. Stafford is alleged to have tried to force the cab off the road in Wellfleet. He was charged with unarmed burglary, malicious destruction of property (cruiser) and motor vehicle trespassing.
